While most of us use Google Maps and GPS on a daily basis, it’s pretty rare to find real fans of cartography, the study and practice of making and using maps. If you were ever into geography or history as a kid, the chances are you’re not much of a map person.

But today, we’re going to turn this around. Combining science, aesthetics and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively. And below we collected some of the most unusual, intriguing and informative examples of maps that will put our reality in a whole new realm.

Thanks to this awesome corner of Reddit (whose name we cannot mention thanks to the notorious internet police), there’s a LOT to uncover! Get ready to boost that inner adventurer of yours since we’re about to go places you’ve never even known existed. Psst! More awesome maps can be found in our previous posts here, here and here.

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century

Countries That Have Had Female Heads Of State Or Government In The Last Century

marrow_monkey Report

Previously, Bored Panda spoke with the founder of the subreddit named Patrick, who shared some very interesting insights into the wondrous world of maps. According to him, there are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. “Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map.”

This Map Of All Of The Sunken Japanese Ships Of Wwii Is Mind Blowing!

Disastrous_Ratio7510 Report

Today, the subreddit of maps is home to 1.7 million devoted members, making it a Reddit powerhouse. But just like any other online community on the platform, changes are inevitable. Patrick told us that the subreddit is doing well, but “Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail." Those days are now gone.

The moderator also said that nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take," Patrick told us some time ago.

Are you KIDDING me? Is this why I get weird reactions online sometimes when I mention how I was atheist and now agnostic (agnosticism is basically a fancy was of saying 'we have no way of knowing'). I cannot imagine how atheism is a threat, but only from my perspective. If someone knows about this or lives in these areas I would love to hear what you have to share

Because being free is considered a natural human aspiration. You cannot blame someone who wants to be free. Just a side note: The police will obviously try to catch you, but no extra time will be added to your sentence for the escape.

What will add to your sentence is of course any other crimes you commit during your escape.

I believe some old Danish town law allowed refugees to gain freedom if they weren't caught for more than 1 year. Source: Tallinn guide

That was a law in all of Europe, I think, but not for refugees, for escaped serfs.

Well, as a German, I'm not mad about this. You'll be going back in there anyway... It's kind of overkill to make it a crime in and of itself.

Only thing is, often you have to commit a crime to be able to escape (threatening someone, breaking something). You are then still tried for that crime, of course

Nope. Some prisoners in Germany are allowed to go outside to visit family or seek a job... they could easily get away then. But they don't.

I’d like to try escaping from prison as a challenge. Not enough to actually commit a crime, mind you.

Keep in mind that European prisons are vastly different from US prisons. In Germany a normal prison means a room per person (or two at the most, if I am not mistaken), a communal kitchen (yes including knives), and other stuff. Here: https://youtu.be/wtV5ev6813I

However..... It's not that simple. You can attempt escape, but nobody or any property be harmed or you'll be charged with those crimes.

Actually you're punished with up to 2 years in prison for escaping from prison or escaping arrest in Denmark.

How is this possible though? I mean if you haven't finished your time? Wouldn't that mean that you can do a crime and escape and all good?

Wanting freedom is seen as a basic human desire, kind of. And therefore, it doesn't result in added time. You'd still have to go back for your original sentence, though.

Well, it's not that simple. If you can escape you may not kidnap anyone, you may not do any damage and you must return your prison clothes or else it will be in addition to your already existing punishment. If you had received a reduced sentence, this could lapse and you still have to serve your full sentence.

I see Switzerland on there and I am disgusted by the way they treated US and British airmen who were forced to land there during WWII. They imprisoned them in horrible conditions and then tortured them if they tried to escape. Just sharing a "fun" fact tangentially related to this post

I don't understand what you mean by "dead men". If you think about death sentence, it have been abolished in every EU country a long time ago.

European mentality is different. In Germany some prisoners can practically come and go as they please as long as they return at night. And they do! https://youtu.be/wtV5ev6813I

Hint: LGBTQ folks still live there. I say this as a queer person. Also, you have LGBTQ folks in your family, school, religious spaces, neighborhoods, etc. We exist. Pushing us into the closet doesn't change that fact.
