People Online Are Praising These 2 Olympians Who Decided To Share A Gold Medal
The Tokyo Olympics is by far one of the most awaited events that not only brings people together, but also is full of surprises—one of these being a recent and very special win. High jumpers Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi both qualified for the gold medal and when the opportunity to solve this situation with a jump-off was presented, they decided to share the medal instead.
This win became special for a couple of reasons. People were fascinated by the heartwarming agreement between the athletes. It showed that great things can be achieved without always putting fierce competition first. As it turns out, Barshim and Tamberi have known each other for quite some time and became friends who supported each other through hard times. In the past, they both suffered from severe ankle injuries.
People all over the world are cheering for these two athletes who decided to share their gold medal

Mutaz Essa Barshim is an athlete from Qatar who has won the gold medal multiple times since 2010. In 2018 he suffered from a severe ankle injury and had to step back for the rest of the season. After this, he was very determined to come back and ensure his victory.

Gianmarco Tamberi, who is an Italian high jumper, also had a very similar path to Barshim’s. In 2016, he became the World Indoor champion. The same year, the Olympics were held, but he couldn’t participate due to his injury. A fun fact about Tamberi is that he used to show up to some major competitions with only half his beard shaved, leaving people to question what was the purpose of this.

During the Olympics, both athletes succeeded at jumping 2.37 meters. After this, they tried to jump 2.39 meters, but all three tries were unsuccessful. Since their score was the same, they could’ve settled this over a jump-off. The athletes went to discuss the situation with officials and it didn’t take long for them to decide to become joint winners. This is the first time since the 1912 Olympics that athletes have shared a gold medal.

People in the comments were fascinated by their instant decision to share the gold medal
However, some people found this unacceptable as it defeats the purpose of competition

Share on FacebookI watched that. They had a chance to compete after tie for gold/medal. They decided to split. Amazing sportsmanship. Those who think it's wrong and should carry on competing are just annoying and salty people.
Absolutely grinning like a fool. The look on their faces just...❤️❤️❤️
Load More Replies...I think it shows great sportsmanship! Everybody is a winner :) Don't know the full details, but I heard that once, in triathlon, 2 athletes decided to arrive hand in hand in first position, and were after disqualified by the triathlon committee... this is disgusting!
Ahh no that was a great moment in Olympic history and saying why don't they just past out medals to everyone ummm cause those were the only two great jumpers left you only get sometimes a one in a lifetime chance to get to a gold medal game unless your Michael Phelps or Usain bolt so I thought it was a great moment in these tough times that are getting worse .
Scott Morrison seems to be one of these sofa "athletes" that shout at competitors to "do your best, you f*cking moron!!" and get pissed at them if they fail, whereas he himself wouldn't even be able to do a fraction of what the athletes are capable of.
This so so wonderful! They are friends, and they can share this accomplishment together! F**k yeah!!!
LMAO at Scott Morrison (the guy who said "why doesn't everyone just get a medal"). That guy would probably break a hip if he tried to do what these guys did.
And for Scott Morrison up above getting all high and mighty about 'no, this is the Olympics, not a school sports day', it's not like this happens all the time. a 90 year gap seems pretty damn rare occurrence to me.
That's definitely sweet. But my unpopular opinion - they should rematch to decide who gets the gold & silver. Doesn't mean that they hate each other, it's just sport is about fair competition to decide who's number 1, 2 and 3. Silver in the Olympics is an amazing achievement as well.
They should start making half gold medals for athletes that want to share first place. That way it's more meaningful.
Isn't the point of the Olympics and these kinds of contests to win though?
Astonished, that this hadn't happened before (Just in 1912). I thought this was normal - equal performance, equal medal.
No, the third person gets Bronze. Two gold, one bronze. Nobody gets silver.
Load More Replies...GREAT IDEA to me. The Olympics are supposed to be a CELEBRATION of ATHLETES and their skills/talents.
Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak tied for gold in the women's 100m freestyle swim at Rio. As far as I know they each got a medal. Couldn't the officials here have come up with an extra?
They shared the gold "title", not the actual physical medal, they both got one.
