Say what you want, but photographs play an important role in everyone's life; they remind us of people, places, sentiments, and tales from our past. They can help us understand who we are, and they can also allow us to see people that are long gone but have left their footprint in history.

With that being said, I asked the Bored Panda community to show us their old treasures, and they sure delivered! Some of the photos submitted even carry some interesting stories attached to them.

Beautiful woman! My great grandmother died the same year, Spanish flu - so sad, she lost her husband in the war, barely survived (starvation) with 3 little children. My grandmother took care of her younger siblings at the age of 9 until they were brought to relatives

DNA says I'm 25% indigenous but when we went to Yuma to the BIA, couldn't find her on the registers, but then found out that she died before the 1914 census done for the local tribes. But we did go by some of the tribal museums and saw old photos that looked a lot like all my sisters and me. So we are in the right area....just need to get more native americans to get on the dna pages. It's sad that we have lost our history

That’s so nice. Idk if photography was still super expensive in 1912, but it’s sweet that they gathered to show off their new shoes. They prob had to last the whole year!

    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Thank you, Rebecca. I don't know the cost, but I know they didn't get many pictures of the family during the early 20th century. True - shoes (probably better made back then) had to last awhile - at least until the growing child's foot required a refit. BTW - the house in the background was around until 2005 when it became too cost prohibitive to keep it up. It was a typical "shotgun" house (long hallway in the middle). It was a great late 19th cent. home, but creepy at night when I was a kid! Untitled-S...57acd8.jpg Untitled-Scanned-30-62b0ad857acd8.jpg

My grandpa did the same to join the Canadian military during WWII. He says it was easy to fake your birthday, and by the time they found out he had lied he had already turned 18 so they couldn't do anything about it. He had a fairly long military career before he retired.

I would guess around 1900 by their dress but their birth dates also suggest this.

1915. He was from Transsylvania and was of the folk székely. This photo seemingly was sent to a lady named The Honourable Manci Heigert, to the castle of Nádasdladány, from another lady called Gizella. "Dear Mancika! Hereby I send the portrait of my little brother, Károly. I received your card, please accept my gratitude for it. Mother hasn't returned so far. I wish you good health. Kisses and hugs with love, Gizi."

Oh! I didn't expect to be thanked! Well, you're welcome. :) I wanted to post the whole photo to show their house, which I find interesting. But of course their faces matter more to me emotionally. My great-grandmother, Sophie, looks a lot like my mother, which I didn't know until I got the photo a few months ago. I'm somehow moved by the likeness. Sadly, her mother and siblings had to move to the poorhouse when the father died. Sophie got married to my great-grandfather, who owned a farm, and was able to take her mother in not too long after. His mother lived with them, too, plus the workers, so there was no room for Sophie's siblings. I have no idea what happened to them. :/

When You Were Considered A Grown Woman Your Hair Was Clipped Short. Over Your Hair They Put A Black Cap. Over That Was The Oorijzer, A Silver Or Gold Helmet That Has A Large V Shape Cut Out In The Front. Over That Is A Lace Cap With A Longer Section At The Nape Of The Neck. There Are Clips Attached To The Oorijzer That Help Hold The Lace In Place. It Looks Like My Great Grandmother Has Little Elfin Ears. This Picture Is From Around1890. My Grandmother Lived To Be 98.

My sister was once cutting my hair and I thought she finished so looked at how she’d cut it in the mirror. It looked just like your great grandmothers bonnet except I didn’t know the proper word for it and said it looks like a Dutch cap! Cue much laughter from sister and mother. I was only about 6 at the time and didn’t know why they were laughing!

Fascinating info: A historian told me that what she's doing with her left hand - it looks strange, right? - is most likely making a "magical sign" to ward off the devil. Apparently, this was rather common back then, because people were afraid that being photographed put their soul in peril.
