I watched a documentary about s*****e at the golden gate bridge. One of the guys shown in it survived his jump. He said that as he was walking and crying to jump if one person had stopped to talk to him he would not have done it. That stuck with me and I think of that if I see someone in distress. He also said as soon as he jumped he regretted it. I wonder how many people who dont survive have that same regret

Probably a lot :( Suícidal ideation is sometimes constant and chronic, but many times, the DECISION to commit suícide is impulsive and in-the-moment when the suícidal person just cannot take it any longer (at that moment.) I've been suícidal for nearly three decades, to differing severities, and I've attempted suícide twice (by ingesting a substance that would kíll me.) Both times, at the last second before I fell fully unconscious, I changed my mind and induced vomiting. If I'd jumped off a bridge or in front of a train, I would not have had that "chance", as those acts are usually irrevocable. (Additionally, I was very near suícide when I was 16 or so, and my dad snuck me to see a therapist, and that helped me SO much just to have someone unbiased to talk to. My mom doesn't "believe" that mental illness is "real", so my dad and I had to literally keep my therapy a secret from her.)

Gives the word “swat” a very different meaning, doesn’t it? Armed with large heavy handbags instead of guns, the Mom Squad would be the most successful unit in the whole department, taking down more hardened criminals with one well placed “swat” with their handbags than a whole army of gun-toting men could ever achieve. Hell hath no fury like a pissed-of mom with a heavy handbags instead containing everything anyone could ever need, including the kitchen sink.

There’s a difference between terror and horror, but in pop culture, the term ‘horror’ is often used to refer to both, interchangeably. In a nutshell, terror is that feeling of dread and anticipation you get right before a scary event. Basically, it’s the buildup toward something disturbing.

On the flip side, horror is the feeling of disgust and revulsion after the event. It’s a very visceral, instinctive reaction.

While far from everyone is a fan of horror, there are so many people who love it to bits. There’s a lot of pleasure to be found in intentionally being spooked. And, in some ways, it can even be healthy. Well, so long as your life doesn’t consist of bingeing on creepy content, day in and day out.

According to the Washington Post, the so-called ‘paradox of horror’ (aka recreational fear) means that being scared can be fun. Under the right circumstances, of course.

This text is very misleading. Dieter Krombach committed the crime in Germany. When the proceedings in Germany were discontinued due to a lack of evidence, the victim's biological father initiated proceedings in France because he and his daughter (the murder victim) were French citizens. Krombach was convicted there in absentia. The European Court for Human Rights declared this judgment unlawful and Germany refused to extradite him. Only then was he abducted.

    Rika

Also, Krombach was the victim's stepfather and a doctor. He always claimed the crime was an accident: she asked him for an injection to tan faster, but she unfortunately had a fatal reaction to the product. It makes sense that the German court didn't think there was enough evidence to jail him for m*rder.

Shame on all seven of you who downvoted Rachel Pelz for saying that she doesn't understand what is by any standards a poorly-written explanation. Rachel, after being abducted and ássaulted the girl managed to gain his trust. Then, using cleaning up his house as a cover, she collected clues which she could hide in her clothing and which could help to identify him - if he had kílled her there's a chance he wouldn't find them when he disposed of her body. As it happens she didn't need them because she managed to escape when he fell asleep, and she led the police straight to him. So yes, both horrifying for the crime and clever for her thinking.

Pretty sure the horrifying part was being abducted by a serial killer followed by the sexual a*****t. Also, I'm sure whatever she did to get him to trust her can't have been fun.

There are lots of different ways to scare yourself while in the comfort of your own home. Scary movies, horror video games, podcasts about true crime, documentaries about how terrifying nature can be, etc.

Not only do you get to learn about dealing with scary situations while staying perfectly safe at home, but you also get an adrenaline rush from the experience, leading to an elevated mood. Basically, you prepare yourself for actually dangerous situations.

Meanwhile, for some people, consuming horror content is a way to focus on a concrete threat, which helps them handle their anxieties and real-life problems.

Before school shootings were a "thing", ugh, kids were to stay in the class, and hide in the corner. Over the past few years, it basically has changed to everyone run and get out as fast you can, literally. Hopefully this works - but my god, what person, let alone a child in a "safe" place should ever have to worry about this.

This photo was taken on May 2, 1960, in the attic of the Secret Annex, the evening before the opening of the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. It was where Otto Frank, his family, and four other Jews hid for over two years. The next day, he opened the museum in memory of Anne and all other m******d Jews, and gave a heartbreaking speech. Imagine the thoughts running through that man's mind in this photo.

People in these comments seem to be missing some critical facts: it wasn't "rumors" about "possible abuse"; her DAUGHTER told her that the husband (the girl's stepfather) had abused both her and her brother when they were children. The son had also told her that "he's a paedophile" prior to "unaliving" himself, but at the time she hadn't fully realized who the son was referring to. It's in the court documents. So no, not just a random rumor; she knew. https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Sentencing-remarks-R-v-Corinna-Smith-FINAL.pdf

Good research. I read that the daughter wanted to take a polygraph, which had not taken place and her son didn't believe the allegations. So it was indeed more than rumours, but not yet an established fact. Either way, I think indivuduals performing death by severe t*****e (try to imagine for a second what that might feel like) on their own accord is not the way to a less barbaric society, although I can understand the sentiment. The judicial system, flawed as it is, is still our best bet in my opinion.

Major thrill seekers take things a step further, set digital media aside, and go to extreme haunted houses.

According to the Washington Post, there’s a delicate balance to be found for what each and every individual enjoys. If there’s too little fear, things can get pretty boring fairly quickly. Too much of a frightening experience, however, leads to very little fun and far too much anxiety.

If you want to get into horror, you don’t have to go overboard at first. Definitely don’t start by watching the scariest movies known to humankind. Try something simpler, with only minor frightening elements.

And you don’t have to go for the full horror fan experience right away. Watch scary content during the day or with the lights on, with some friends by your side.

If you’re particularly easy to frighten, you might even want to look up some spoilers for the movies and shows. Sacriliege, we know! But if it helps you get used to terror and horror, it’s well worth the price.

Stimulation is one of the key forces driving the consumption of horror. Based on research conducted by Haiyang Yang from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and Kuangjie Zhang from the Nanyang Technological University Singapore, “exposure to terrifying acts like stories of demonic possession or alien infestation can be stimulating both mentally and physically.”

If someone wonders: French diplomat was a virgin when they met, he had a really troubled history of communicating with women and he probably was gay. That's why he didn't really know how does a naked woman body look and feel. And they always had s*x in darkness with Shi Pei Pu fully dressed. And he also was able to put his genitals in a, erm... Labia-like form. He said so himself. The child (an orphan) was provided by Chinese Intelligence so Pei Pu could show his French lover a baby.

Not a surprise given the way that Soviet forces were utilised during WWII, their lack of regard for human life was bordering on criminal, they’d approach battles with volume rather than quality or solid tactics, just throw troops at the problem. 1 in 3 dead during WWII were Russian. Yes they won but the cost in lives was biblical.

They were not “lost to World War II.” They were kiLled in a war they never wanted, victims of a vicous N**i regime on one side and a lack of respect and care for their soldiers’ lives on the other (Soviet) side.

Soviet union never used the name World War II. They call it The Great National war. One of the reason why they eventually "won" was they simply had more headcount that Germans to sent to frontline.

Don't thank them too much - they went total animals on German women and girls. Same thing they're doing in the Ukraine today. There are accounts of eg. a 13 year old being gang rap*ed to death on the hood of a jeep. They might have helped to slay the monsters, but they became the monsters themselves. And then forbade German women to talk about what happened to them.

When you watch American movies about WW2 you can get the impression that Tom Hanks and Rosie the Riveter won the war. Not the case, Germany lost on the Russian steppes. I read that every family in Russia lost a blood relative (father/mother/daughter/son) in the war. And before that in the Purges, the Russian Civil War, the Russian Revolution, World War I, on and on. That kind of trauma is so ripe for exploitation and has been exploited by evil men ever since.

Wolves are extremely diverse in size. The largest subspecies can indeed be twice the height and weight of an average husky. However, most subspecies of wolf are only slightly larger than a husky. Italian wolves, for example, are the size of a retriever, while the Indian plains wolf is even smaller, being only around 2 feet at the shoulder and weighing up to 55 lb.

Yes and yes. It could be a large male Northwestern wolf, which can reach 3 feet at the shoulder, and weigh up to 160 lb, while a smallish female husky will be shorter than 2 feet at the shoulder and weight 50 lb. However, the picture is indeed photoshopped.

As per the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, individuals who enjoy horror tend to have a psychological ‘protective frame.’ This falls into 3 main categories, including having:

    1. A safety frame, where the person enjoying horror entertainment knows for a fact that they are safe
    2. A sense of detachment, where the individual is reminded that what they’re seeing play out on the screen isn’t real
    3. A sense of control, where you feel confident about managing and overcoming all the dangers that you might encounter

Maui is only 48 miles across at its widest point. But the terrain isn't easy to cross. Dense forest and major elevation changes, and with population centers and infrastructure only really along the coast. You couldn't possibly go in a straight line, and it would be easy to get disorientated. In a place like Maui though, you're best bet would be to find a stream and just follow it down hill. All of the streams lead to a road at some point. The problem is many of them also lead to water falls

My mom once accidentally set some kitchen towels on fire. I was maybe 5 or so. The second I saw the flames in the kitchen, I ran to the phone and dialed 911, as I had been TAUGHT to do, and yelled "Help! Fire!" when the dispatcher answered. My mom threw the flaming towels in the sink, walked over to me, backhanded me, grabbed the phone, and told the operator that I had "accidentally" dialed and hung up. After she'd hung up, my mother hit me repeatedly while screaming at me to never do that again. I was very confused, as I had been taught in preschool, kindergarten, and by BOTH parents to call 911 in an emergency (INCLUDING fire.) No one d!ed like in poor Robert's story, but it took me a LONG time to feel "safe" with calling 911 again.

Believe children when they tell you things, folks. Yes, I know a lot of it ends up being just gibberish, but at least look into what they’re saying to verify it, instead of just brushing them off. Because that sends the message that what they have to say isn’t important, and that can turn them into adults who turn their heads and say nothing because they “don’t want to get involved”, which often lets wrongdoers get away with the s**t they do. Please at least listen to them, and let them know what they’re saying carries some weight with you.

Homicide detectives have to exhaust all possibilities f any suspects but thinking a 911 call from a child is a prank isn't worth checking?

I hope they fired the operator that ignored the call... you always alert the police first, they can check, and if it is a prank, they can also arrest the prankster. Better than letting someone die.

Lobotomy was performed by Walter Jackson Freeman in 1941. The story of this man is horrifying. He was convinced that crushing people's brains with an ice pick was a revolutionary treatment for mental illness. He injured more than 3000 people.

Rosemary was not even mentally ill, according to many reports. She was simply a woman who was an independent thinker, and her father found this intolerable.

She lived another 64 years, unable to talk, incontinent and, basically, destroyed. Shattered. They killed her, the body just didn't follow the person as closely as usual. Joseph was among the worst humans. Should have HIS brains cut to shreds instead!

Morbid Lobotomy Lesson Time: So the way they do this, and probably did Ms. Kennedy, is that they do this while you are quite conscious. This was no an icepick lobotomy, so they did not enter through the eye socket, instead entering from an incision in the top of the head. The patient is mildly sedated to make them more manageable, but mostly conscious enough to answer questions and what not. That part is important, because once they start shaving off the portion of the brain that is done in this kind of lobotomy, they need to gauge if the person is still coherent. The patient is either asked questions, asked to recite the lord's prayer, or asked to recite the alphabet while the doctor shaves off portions of the brain, and if the patient messes up, that's the doctor's cue that they need to stop shaving off more. You can see how easily this procedure would be botched like it was with poor Ms. Kennedy. An abomination by all scientific and medical standards.

When Rosemary’s mother was about to give birth, the nurse told her to keep her knees together because there wasn’t a doctor available. For 2 hours the baby was in the birth canal with little to no oxygen. Rosemary did suffer brain damage. It could have been a form of autism, though that diagnosis wasn’t around yet. She did have outbursts and some uncontrolled behavior. The fact that Rosemary’s father went behind her mother’s back to have this procedure done is deplorable.

Often, when a woman was deemed troublesome, or a healer, or even lived alone, they were accused of being a witch, etc. Or if she was mentally ill. Her only crime was likely that she wasn't "normal."

This theory made absolutely no sense, and was promoted by a guy who was such a rabid, hate-filled crusader against Christianity in a nation where they were a persecuted minority, that he was arrested for hate speech and fled to Finland to avoid prosecution. The Catholic Church had stated he was free to believe and promote his theories, but he was charged with many counts of other hate speech. FWIW, short of directing violence, I oppose hate speech laws, but citing this guy as the final word is beneath contempt.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Reimer Wow, this is even more f****d up than this says. He had a twin brother (Brian) as well, who also eventually committed s*****e, and the man who was performing/monitoring the experiment on David thought that "sexual play" was important to the development of gender identity. He forced the twins to imitate sexual acts, with Brian acting out the "male" role and David the "female" role. Understandably, this traumatized them both.

Not-very-fun fact: Decades ago, doctors would often advise parents of boys with micro-penises to raise them as girls, because they thought the kid would grow up happier without the humiliation of having such a small pénis. They would get genital surgery, and in puberty be given feminine hormones. With absolutely no regard of the fact that those kids expressed that they felt like they were boys and were unhappy being forced to be girls. And nobody batted an eye. Nowadays, when a 17 year old trans teenager wants gender affirming care (in most places you need to be 18, but in some places you can be a bit younger), everybody is screaming about "a kid being forced into unnecessary surgery", yet nobody gives a fúck about the kids back then who were ACTUALLY being forced into unnecessary surgery against their will.

There's more to it; they manipulated him as a social experiment too, if I remember right and it was devastating physiologically . And all for what, because of this insane belief that parents have a right to mutilate their children's bodies? I know someone personally who got a botched one and he said he literally has almost no sexual function. My friend was deprived of a normal experience in life because it was done to his father. Debate over circumcision aside - what's most wild to me is that they thought the difference in sexual identity could be changed just by how the child was raised. But, I'm guessing this is the same era that made so many people think being gay was a "choice" 🤦🏽‍♀️ THIS is why we need trans rights folks!

It messed him up, that and not having a p***s. He ended up ending his life. He had an identical twin so there was always a reminder what he would have been without the hormone therapies and such. The Dr. was a quack who had a theory you could raise a kid either way and they'd just adapt to whatever gender parents picked. Idiot.

There was a short-lived TV miniseries that featured an episode presenting his story - portrayed believably by an actor, of course. I don't recall the name of the series; the time period in the series was 1977 when the FBI were developing a new profiling investigation unit. According to some accounts, Mr. Kemper is happy to be incarcerated; He called the authorities with a confession to his crimes when he decided they were taking too long to solve the murder cases. The authorities refused to believe him at first. But, you guessed it, Mr. Kemper knew specific details about the murders only the killer would know.

Although he did horrible crimes he was raised by a witch of a mother who tortured him and ridiculed him endlessly. He turned himself in after finally disposing of said mother in a way fitting her crimes. After she was eliminated he realized it was her he was k*****g all along and his work was done.

In my teens, I nearly collided with a snapping turtle while riding my bike through an office park. That thing was about the size of a manhole cover. There was a small creek running through the park. I walked that creek many times, and had no idea it could shelter such a large turtle.

Overworked people sadly exist everywhere, the Japanese at least have the chance to live in a country where respect is very important. I doubt someone would feel safe passing out in the streets of New York or Paris: your bag and wallet will most definitely be gone by the time you wake up, and you might never even wake up because a*s*ulting defenceless people is seen as "cool" in a lot of places.

He didn't do this because he ran out of gas. He drove until he ran out of gas, because he wanted to ~live in nature~. Which would have worked out fine, except his idea of living in nature was stealing from everybody else who lived there.

Official theory, but a lot of investigators don't believe it: they did search the river and found nothing. In the case of a simple drowning, something would have been found - even many years later. Plus, his father who was on the phone always claimed he'd have heard him falling into the water. Him saying "Oh, sh*t!" and cutting the call suggests another (darker) theory: he accidentally wandered on a private property and came face to face with the owner pointing a gun at him thinking he was an intruder. It's a rural area with lots of deep pits, and property owners aren't legally required to let the cops search their property without a warrant (that can't be delivered unless there's enough evidence against them). It's likely the poor guy was shot and dumped somewhere his body might never ever be found.

He subsisted on tea, coffee, sparkling water, vitamins and yeast extract while living at home in Tayport, Scotland, frequently visiting Maryfield Hospital for medical evaluation. Barbieri went from 456 pounds (207 kg) to 180 pounds (82 kg), losing 276 pounds (125 kg) and setting a record for the length of a fast.

He did it under medical supervision, not all on his own. So he was getting nutritional supplements and at least some calories to burn every day. It might be and extreme way to do it, but sometimes desperate situations lead to extreme solutions. I would like to know how the rest of his life went after he lost the weight. Guess I’ll be going some Googling.

Cutting Asbestos without proper protection for an hour, they said, is equal to a decade of smoking. Don't know if that's true, or even comparable, but ... aren't filter cigarettes a scam anyway? It's tricking you into thinking it would be "less damaging" or so, while in reality, it doesn't make much of a difference at all.

The whole way through I was thinking 'there is more to the 'father's' story' and then at the end they brought up 'rumours' that he sexually abused her (just the icing on the cake of the emotional and physical abuse both adoptive parents used).

The child, Natalia Grace, was born with a rare form of dwarfism (spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita.) This altered her appearance from that of a "normal" child and also sort of messed up the "determining age" test that was performed on her. But yes, I think the movie Orphan was theorized to play a part in Natalia's adoptive parents' decisions.

She had a rare form of dwarfism that made her look a little different and because of her condition she started puberty very early. But the adoptive mother was crazy and I think she watched orphan and possibly felt competitive with the girl. She left an eight year old to live in an apartment by herself and left the country before the little girl received help

He was not just "ugly." He was severely disfigured; he lost his eyes, nose, and right arm. He would use a walking stick to get around, feeling his way along the road. Really amazing when you think about it.

She should have been put in jail for years. 18 months probation is a joke. And worse, her managers knew about it. They should all have been fired.

And that's why it's important to provide mental health days and a chance for employees to take a day off on short notice. Not that what she did was right, but just imagine if she could have gone to her manager and say "I'm sorry, I just can't today". At least the calls would have been handled with (which they probably were because the people just called a second time, reaching a different operator).

Same thing happened in France with a r*pist. Both twins were sent to prison, though. They were in there for a while because they refused to say which one of them did it and there was no way to figure it out based on DNA. If I recall well, the case got solved when a victim mentioned a very small detail only one of them had like a speech impediment or a recent injury. The case is now being used as an example in law school because it raises important questions like, is it ethical to keep two people in prison based on DNA evidence when you know only one of them is guilty ?!

    Community Member
4 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Well, if the twin who didn't do it said nothing, he protected a rap*ist and hindered the course of justice. 2 good reasons to put him in jail, too. People who protect rapi*sts deserve every bad thing life throws at them.

Does this mean that a twin can pretty much do whatever crime they want? Because if DNA can't show which one did it, and eye witness/cameras can't either when they look super similar, then they can only get convicted if caught red-handed?

I agree. I've lived in many countries. Ironically, I've found that countries with more censorship, have more violent societies. Ditto with basically anything else. Hide s*x from children, you end up with more teenage parents. Hide alcohol and d***s (pretending they don't exist, rather than teaching kids why they should avoid them), and you end up with more alcoholics and d**g addicts. Ever censored word on BP leads to MORE scrutiny, not less.

It feels so strange to see a monument about the danger of knives. Maybe because I've only ever used it as a tool? Like I carry it with my everywhere and consistently make use of it. Don't think an angel made of guns would have the same effect over here, though. You'd just have awkward gatherings of people worshipping it. "What a touching tribute to firearms!" Ugh.

There were two other survivors, a man named Leon Compere-Leandre and a 10 year old girl Havivra Da Ifrile. The prisoner, Ludger Sylbaris, was just the famous one, because he made a career out of being a survivor, while the other adult survivor was extremely traumatised and withdrew from the public.

This man was Ludger Sylbaris, a man who had spent the evening of May 7, 1902, drinking heavily and was arrested for inappropriate drunken behavior. As punishment, the man was kept in a dungeon-like cell with poor ventilation and low light. However, this punishment was to turn out to be an extraordinary stroke of luck when Ludger was saved because of his living arrangements that night. The next day, when doomsday arrived in town, Ludger escaped alive.

He didn't k**l anyone, he was in a group of teenagers who DID k**l at least two and injure several others while robbing them. He refused parole as a way out of prison because he would be on parole for the rest of his life. Eventually, the Supreme Court ruled that life sentences for juveniles were unconstitutional. He was offered parole again, but refused. He argued for release without parole - and that was finally granted.

Glad for him it healed, but I'm not much impressed by thrill-seeking (and climbing Everest isn't anything but that, plus maybe bragging rights). He had an accident, survived and could move because of fantastic doctors, and decided to risk it all over again - several times. How more injuries did he suffer that the health care system had to pay for?

Turned out to be total BS. When the investigation started, no Mel Waters had ever lived in that part of Washington, and no such hole was ever found in the county where he claimed to live. In fact, no large hole of any kind was found in that county. The whole was just some guy who appeared on an AM call-in show and said "I found a hole on my property blah blah blah".

While I support the right of people to choose their gender, I find two areas where this is problematic: sports, and prisons. We can talk about sports elsewhere. There are two types of prisons - male and female. I'm not so sure it's a good idea to put a trans man into a male prison - or a female prison, or a trans woman into a female prison - or a male prison. Note that, whatever we as a society think is right, prisoners and prison guards might not be so enlightened and rational. Anyone have any facts or arguments? Sincerely asking.

I'm not anti trans at all, but this was the right call to make. Bryson would still have the strength of a fully grown, biological man, and be a huge threat to fellow inmates. And given the crimes committed as a man, what makes you think a gender reassignment would wipe that predatorial thinking away? And I say this as a survivor of r**e.

Gorillas actually aren’t violent unless threatened. So Tyson would have to have done something to the gorilla make the animal feel that they needed to defend themself, in order for there to be a fight. That would constitute animal cruelty.

    Anthony Elmore
    Community Member
4 months ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Of course, that would imply that the animal didn't mistake benign behavior for threatening behavior which is how many maulings happen. Still, betting on the Ape viewing you as threatening isn't a good look, and the gorilla would have killed him, so probably the more responsible choice to turn down the fight.

He still holds the record for heaviest weight of any contender in a World Championship Bout. Defeated by David Haye a former unified Cruiserweight champion. The fight was silly. David just bounced round him the whole fight and Valuev could barely land a punch due to his size and slow footwork. His career was very well 'managed' to ensure he kept winning for a while but Haye did the job.

This occurred in the UK. There, pit bulls are illegal because they are, rarely, fatally dangerous. In response, breeders started selling XL Bullies, which are basically oversized pit bulls. What a stupid loophole. Her dog in the picture is an XL Bully. They are now in the process of being banned from the UK.

It is a fallacy that they have "locking jaws", they are not more prone to violence than any other breed of domestic dog, on the contrary, there are studies showing pitbulls are more loving towards their owners than some other breeds.

He's a youtube 'pranker'. From Wiki: On April 2, 2025, he was arrested by Philippine authorities after livestreaming on Kick a series of incidents in which he harassed people in public at Bonifacio Global City, a business district in Metro Manila. During his livestreams, he was seen stealing a patrol motorcycle from a security guard, repeatedly taking a security guard's cap, stealing an electric fan from a restaurant and bringing it into a hotel, and threatening to rob a woman in public. Additionally, he also recorded himself jumping onto the roof of a moving jeepney and driving a tricycle recklessly in Manila[30][7] as well as trespassing into a McDonald's kitchen and stealing from it.[31] Zdorovetskiy was also accused of making derogatory comments and gestures toward a surfing instructor in Boracay and encouraging viewers to review bomb their local business. (But he was also imprisoned and fined multiple times for crimes such as jumping women in public and fake bomb threats)
