Share on FacebookI would imagine the "home doors" help create a more welcome environment instead of a "sterile door". I cannot even fathom the idea of loosing my memory, congratulations to the folks at True Doors for coming up with such an award winning idea!
I feel bad for the guy who had graffiti on his door. My grandmother has Alzheimer's, and her memory is the most clear when its morning, and we are playing a game of cards. She also recognizes smells (they trigger more memory recall) than that of her other senses. I love that these people are trying to help, its a terrible disease.
They're not just for dementia patients. It's for anyone in assisted living facilities, and the selection of styles at the site is extensive. USD $125 or so including shipping seems a tad steep.
And that's not even a custom made one. Other companies offer standard door stickers for 1/4 of the price and the option to do custom made (but no pricing on that). Great idea though to give doors in these kind of institutions a bit off personality.

This... is SO important for caregivers of anyone with dementia!!! When Mom was in rehab, she was already in stage-3 Alzheimers, When Dad mentioned she wasnt eating as she should, I suggested he bring placemats from home, for them to use at mealtimes. Lo and behold, she began eating her meals much better than before. For those WITH dementia, some things remain familiar and some don't. IT IS SO important to KEEP the familiarities - items, smells (colognes, deoderant etc), and routines - within their daily routine. Even IF they're not at home, it keeps them 'steady'. It may be a bit tedious for the caregiver at times - carrying a placemat and/or a set of silverware, or cup, from home for 'dining out', etc. - but it is SO worth it! This idea is pure genius, with a deep love for those afflicted with Dementia. How wonderful is that? #AlzheimersAwareness #UnconditionalLove
This made me smile - the elderly have been forgotten one too many times so it's awesome a company focused on them!
My BIL's nursing home door has a knocked and letter box, each door is a different colour.
It is not so much that people "loose" their memory, it is more that they do not store new memory well. These doors are a good example of using these old memories in a positive way. We cannot change Alzheimer's at this time, but we can change the environment to fit the person. The greatest difficulty comes when we try to make the person with Alzheimer's fit into our expectations.
Agreed. Same with other mental disorders, autism, and, well, people in general...not everyone can/will conform to the "norm".

Because those people are in need of constant support and care and it is not easy for all people to provide it. Especially as in most cases it would mean that you need to quit your full-time job. As you imagine, for most people it is impossible as they gave their own families to take care of, loans to be paid and etc. Also I noticed that it is both emotionally and physically hard thing to do for both sides. Definitely really lovely and our parents deserve it... But not easy anyway. And most people do not have a choice.
