Lately, complaints that “nobody wants to work anymore” have been all over the headlines. Businesses claim there’s a real talent shortage with people losing motivation during the pandemic and not bothering to apply to their jobs.

Many of them forget that job seekers these days are smart enough to do their homework and find the information about the employer before they bother to apply. And if they don’t like what they learn, they skip the ad and go on to another one. In fact, 95% of job seekers surveyed by Glassdoor say an employer's reputation impacts their decision. Call it captain obvious, but many business owners seem to be totally oblivious about it.

And often you don’t need to dig deep to find red flags in a job description. Awful working conditions and unattainable expectations repel potential employees for the sake of their own good. So when Twitter user Janel Comeau shared some examples of disastrous job conditions with the caption “‘nobody wants to work anymore’ starter kit,” people immediately responded by sharing some more. Below is quite a solid collection of jobs that scream “run” from a mile away.

This Twitter user shared a couple of pics of awful work conditions to point out how delusional business owners are to complain that 'nobody wants to work anymore'

If you’re still more or less convinced that nobody indeed wants to work anymore, has gotten super lazy, lost their talent, doesn't care about their mortgages, bills, loans and things they’re gonna put on the table today, let’s take a look at one illuminating experiment. Not so long ago we wrote about a guy named Joey Holz who went viral after applying to 60 places and getting a single interview. This took him 2 applications every day for an entire month of September. I would call it a pretty legit job search, wouldn’t you?

After Holz’s experiment made the headlines, he realized he’s not the only one who just otherwise could be written off as unsuccessful. But he said he’s now heard from people all over the country who have had trouble getting any response from companies they applied to. For example, there’s a woman in LeHigh Acres who showed her Indeed page with a whopping 114 applications submitted and no interviews.

Now, Holz is on a mission to expand on his experiment. He invited others to share their personal job hunting experiences in a bid to find out "what's really happening in the labor market." The idea is to challenge the infamous employers' complaints that there's a labor shortage because "nobody wants to work." Here is the link to his latest project called “All Of Us Experiment.

Due to my American public education, I do not know what a Norway is, and I'm automatically suspicious of it.

Oh, they're desperate enough. Problem (for them) is that the workers aren't desperate enough to be exploited.

This. The lack of respect for working the pandemic, was the last straw.

They probably feared that with their degree, after DT went through the hiring/onboarding/training and got them on their schedule, they'd quit as soon as they found something more in line with their qualifications. Which they probably would have, given that few things are lower than working at the Dollar Tree; one of which is being a server at a Golden Corral! (also don't ask!)

my stepson applied several times for them... at one store they've gone through about 50 employees in just a few months and still he hasn't been called, and still they have a help wanted sign.

My 17 y/o son applied to Woolworths for a position, He was notified that they had received his application. 14 weeks later, someone from Woolworths phoned up to arrange a job interview, He proceeded to abuse the person on the phone because they didn't ring him within the first week. He told them he wasn't going to work for ANYONE who was as tardy as they appeared to be. Guess who was surprised that he was Black-Listed from Woolworths and ALL other associated stores for ANY employment. The look on his face was enough when I told him how many THOUSANDS of applications they have to work through to sort out new employees. He kept his mouth shut after that and was much more polite with the FEW calls he did actually get back.

being over qualified does not get you the job because they know your only passing time until something better comes along.

You are overqualified so that is why the delay. Think of it as a compliment...

Loads of places with 'we're hiring' signs aren't actually hiring at that moment but like to have fresh applications on hand at all times for when a position does open up so they don't have to wait. Our local Publix has signs alllll over the parking lot but online there are no positions open nearby.

I mmean, it depends on the job. Surgeon, doctor, salesperson teacher, fireman - there a ton of jobs with some truly stressful times in it. But putting that specifically in ad is suspicious.

Best Buy employees haven't been on commission in years. They have numbers they need to hit, but the only thing they get for making their targets is staying employed.

I had to take an absurd morality and ethics test for a serving job at a fast-food place. One of the questions was, "In your previous jobs, how much do you estimate you have stolen in cash from your workplace? How much in food/serving items/office supplies?"
