Mom Warns Everyone About The Dangers Of Anti-Vaxxing After Her Daughter Ends Up In ER
The flaming hot debate between those for and against vaccinating children has flared up once again. Registered nurse Camille Echols’ daughter Ashley recently had to be treated in the ER after being exposed to a child with chickenpox, which prompted the mom to pen a scathing essay about ‘anti-vaxxers’ and the danger they create for kids like hers.
Anti-vaxxers have used a number of medical and ethical arguments to make a case for themselves. Some take issue with the supposed ‘harmful ingredients’ inside vaccines that they believe may cause allergic reactions, pneumonia, and even neurological disabilities like autism, notions which have largely been debunked. Others are angered by laws requiring all children to be vaccinated in order to attend public schools, and accuse the government of intervening in personal medical matters.
Despite the curiosity anti-vaxxers provoke, overwhelming evidence from the Centers for Disease Control maintains that vaccines are safe for children and adults, and that they are necessary in order to protect the public. For children like Ashley Echols, who live with compromised immunity, it only takes one unvaccinated child to transmit a disease that could kill them.
Read Camille’s plea below, and tell us what you think in the comments!

Share on FacebookSeatbelts can sometimes have negative side effects too, but would you let your children drive without them? No. If children can get vaccinated and their parent choose not to do it, it's child abuse, pure and simple.
It goes further than that though. One of the best features of vaccination is 'herd immunity', where people with lowered or inexistent immune systems are protected when they're unable to receive the vaccine themselves. You not only risk your child's life on the pretty insulting basis that death would be better than being autistic, you also endanger other people.

Definitivly! People do not even understand the luck they have to live in 21st century and in a country where vaccines are accessible. I mean, Black Plague: 30 to 50% of European population killed! Malaria 500 000 people killed each year NOWDAYS! Hell, what we call in France "Spanish Flu" killed more people than WW1! I wonder if the problem doesn't partially come from the fact that we "forgot" to be affraid of dying. We do not remember famines or epidemics. We're supposed to get old, we do not realize that it's not "natural".

All you have to do is look around you and notice that people aren't dying of measles anymore like the used to, on top of many, many horrid diseased to see that it works. I'm all for natural selection if you're dumb enough to not want to be vaccinated yourself, but to put your kids and other kids in danger because you can't do a little bit of research is truly disgusting. Would you also be against your kid having a blood transfusion? Not give them medicine when they really need it because of the tiny chances of a side effect? Just awful.
The problem is, the movement has gone so viral (ironically) that researching it online will provide more than enough 'proof' for them to comfortably nestle in confirmation bias. EVEN if vaccines caused autism on ANY level, you're still saying that autism is SO BAD you'd rather take the chance that your kids contract a terrible illness that might physically disable or kill them. It's insane.

But the two types of people whose views are so dangerously wrongheaded that they disgust me are Anit-vaxxers and Climate change deniers, the evidence is in and crystal clear on these issues, all the scientists are in agreement, aside from a couple of bought scientist with ulterior motives. The consensus is clear and these people and their beliefs are actively hurting people. These aren't views that a person can have that has no effect on anyone else, they are hurting others with their selfishness.
I honestly can't believe some people would prefer to have a dead non autistic child than a living autistic one (Vaccines don't cause autism)
If you do not vaccinate your child, you're a moron. That study was debunked, and found to be falsified 10 years ago. Stop hurting your own children!
If someone does not vaccinate his or her child, that child shouldn't be allowed to go to school--for starters.

The pox showed up shortly before his death as purple dots, because they were filled with blood. His disease was aplastic anemia, but he died from chicken pox. It may seem like an inconvenient childhood disease, but for those at real risk it is not. This was and is a real fear for those living with autoimmune diseases. The role and goal of vaccinations is to reduce the spread of these diseases. Too much good has come from vaccines. The reason people don't see these diseases as a problem anymore is because those who came before them gave them that comfort.
I'm so sorry about your brother. That's so sad

(I had been in the iron lung in a coma) I stayed in the iron lung and then in an oxygen tent. I was in the hospital at Christmas time and remember well all of it. I had friends on another ward I talked to and we played dolls and make up things. I was one of the fortunate ones. I lived....many of my friends did not. My mother worked with me for weeks to strengthen my arm and legs so I could get treatment and physical therapy. I write all those for those who are against vaccinations. When I was in about the 2nd grade I got vaccinated in school. I walk normal except for a slight dragging of my foot if I don't remind myself to lift my foot higher when I am tired (this is automatic for me after so many years). Now polio need not happen. We are fortunate to live in a nation that can prevent all this.
I'm sorry you went through that and am very glad you survived!

Vaccines are a necessity, as she states, to keep these diseases at bay so they cannot threaten all of our children again. It is a shame they are a preventive measure but not a guarantee for this woman's sweet little girl. Glad she spoke up!
I support vaccines but even I didn't realise the harm they could be causing to other children. My heart goes out to this child... poor girl!
Maybe you should stop and look at a comparison chart of the scheduled vaccines in 1983 and then look at the chart for today.. While my children are grown and were given vaccines. I understand parents today questioning the vaccine schedule.. Look at the schedule from 1983.. then also see that in 1986, Pharma was no longer responsible for vaccine injuries.. Compare the charts and then tell me that parents shouldn't be concerned.. As for studies.. give me a flipping break.. Those very studies are funded and paid for by the very companies that make the vaccines. http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/cdc-adds-3-more-vax-to-childhood-immunization-schedule/

There's a thing called HERD IMMUNITY which works in percentages, and it's apparently where anti-vaxxer minds draw the line in mathematical thinking. Herd immunity means that the more members of the herd are immune to a disease, the less chances there are for people who can't be vaccinated to contract it. I feel for this lady, I am immunosupressed too, good speed on recovery and may it never happen again.
Herd immunity is a myth in terms of vaccine derived. For it to work all adults would need vaccines too

Load More Replies...According to the CDC, herd immunity is needed to rest at 80% to be strong enough to effectively create a strong enough barrier to defend those unable to handle the vaccines for medical reasons. The VAST majority of US adults, including PRO-vaxxers who will rail and attack the anti-vaxxers, do not get the booster shots needed to remain immune. The average is every 10 years, and estimates show 20%, likely less adults take ANY boosters at all as they age out of the school system. SO, if you want to blame an anti-vaxxer's kid for spreading these diseases, look in the mirror first and see if you are being a hypocrit or not by checking YOUR OWN vaccination record. These FACTS will probably get a LOT of votes down... when facts and fear butt heads, the emotion-ruled always let fear win.
Everything I need to know about the integrity of the article was summed up by the last message claiming that the "autism" connection was fabricated and the guy killed himself. The guy is still out there and still doing research, despite the fact that he never actually DID autism or vaxx research. The biases, lies, and misunderstandings on BOTH sides of the "debate" are causing more harm than the diseases are... especially considering that the new "epidemics" among unvaccinated youths are stemming from communities with strong immigrant, legal and ILLEGAL, communities where there is no successful screening or vaccinations WHERE THEY"RE NEEDED the most, NOT "anti-vaxxer" communities. That lie must stop. Also, when was the last time ANY of you vaxx "experts" had your booster shots, which on average are needed every 10 years? HERD IMMUNITY doesn't even exist in the US, it takes 80+ of the population, and less than 20% continue to get ANY boosters, much less maintain them into old age.
I am not an Anti Vaxxer yet I prefer to keep an open mind on all vaccines. What is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander. Each case and choice needs to be made according to its own merits without fear of retribution from anyone else. Narrow mindedness on either side of the debate is the bigger problem.
If you make a decision that endangers people on a society-wide level, you reap the consequences of that decision.

Even if it were true that vaccines have a chance of causing autism, their benefits far outweigh any risks. The fact there is no proof whatsoever linking vaccines to autism, and people are still not vaccinating, is utter lunacy.
Babies die from vaccines. This is not just about autism though autism combined with the physical effects such as bowel problems self harming and other medical issues can be a heartbreaking thing for mums to see and deal with. Continuous screaming is a common theme in vaccine damaged infants. Imagine your child screaming in pain everyday.

The whole anti-vax 'movement' is based purely on ignorance and entitlement. Just because YOUR kid MIGHT be okay not getting vaccinated, your reckless choice could end up killing another kid who is too sick to get vaccinated. All of these diseases that were nearly wiped out, have come back with a vengeance because of sheer stupidity. Think about what would have happened if our grandparents and great grandparents had been against vaccinations? Polio would still be running rampant, not to mention many other diseases that you just don't see anymore. This is another topic that the media should have shut down but instead pretended there's an actual "controversy". Just like global warming. The science is done. The science is solid. But because the media loves a controversy they play it like "he said/she said - make your own decisions".
You can educate yourself easily directly from the WHO site: http://www.who.int/vaccine_safety/initiative/tools/DTP_vaccine_rates_information_sheet.pdf http://www.who.int/immunization/research/forums_and_initiatives/1_ABatson_Global_Vaccine_Market_gvirf16.pdf And from the press, e.g: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/apr/04/usa.highereducation And there are really a lot of materials to read. Educate yourself and act consciously. And be healthy.
The vaccines don't keep them from getting the virus, it might for some, but not all. It will however keep them from getting it to bad. My kids were all vaccinated and still came down with chickenpox...just not bad cases of it. That was all they got, none of the other stuff. I only had German Measles and that was a year after I was exposed as a newborn.
There's always that chance of vaccines not working unfortunately.

How are vaccinations not mandatory? I'm being serious, not sarcastic. I really don't know what the current rules are, but when I was a kid, we weren't allowed to go to school if we weren't up to date on vaccines. I realize this is only a partial fix, but I would expect it to help. For the kids without healthcare we even had nurses visit & give us the vaccines so that being poor wouldn't keep us out of school.
At the age of five I got pertussis. A.k.a whooping cough. Why? Not because I wasn't vaccinated but because a child in my class wasn't. At the age of 17 I still have to take three inhalers a day. See a pulmonologist every other month. And stay inside most of the winter because one kids parents thought he was going to get autism.
I was vaccinated as a child, and I still got chicken pox. I thought all kids get chicken pox? Or am I wrong?
Not necessarily. Vaccines cannot be 100% working for 100% of people, because we have different systems. It's possible that it didn't quite build a complete immunity for you, but you're likely to have had it far less strongly than an unvaccinated child would. The vaccine is still important, because like another comment showed, people with autoimmune illnesses and suppressed immune system can actually die from chicken pox, so the fewer people develop it, the lesser risk for everyone.
Load More Replies...The reason why we don't die from the plague and measles IS BECAUSE of those vaccines. If you stop, you eventually go backwards. Can't wait.
Vaccines may have a few negative side effects, but definitely not Autism. Definitely not. Do your research before believing only one person who most likely likes putting people's lives in danger.
I have a child with autism and she was vaccinated. I believe she had autism from birth or before as she was 6 weeks early as it was. I don't believe autism is caused by vaccinating but my daughter did have a hard time with the second varicella vaccine it didn't make her sick just made her leg swell up pretty good and huge bruise for at least a month.
Kathy, you are so, so wrong. Chicken pox may be no big deal for most healthy kids but for people with low immune systems (incidentally the same people who can't get vaccinated) it can be deadly. Viruses trigger my son's ITP, meaning his immune system starts killing his platelets. He almost bled to death after catching RSV. My son had a vaccine injury --seizures that caused brain damage-- and yet I have to keep vaccinating him anyway (not the one that caused the seizures) because people are too goddamned stupid to vaccinate their perfectly healthy children. So, when you refuse vaccines, just know that you are choosing to let sick children die because you think diseases are "no worry."
Load More Replies...How DARE anyone tell you, and pediatric RN, to "educate yourself"?? I suppose they mean the "education" they get from internet cranks out to make a buck.
Chicken pox vaccination is not part of the childhood vaccination program in any country that I know of. Only children who are more vulnerable to the consequences may get it for example in the UK. Like your daughter but you said she couldn't get it. I understand you are upset but it's kind of necessary for kids to go through chicken pox because if they had the vaccination and avoid it in childhood they would be able to contract it in adulthood (apparently, according to the NHS) And catching chicken pox in adulthood is extremely dangerous that's why it's one of the first questions midwives ask pregnant women on their first session wether she had it already or not because it's very dangerous for the unborn baby too. So however I am all for the vaccinations and all but vaccinating children against chicken pox is not a good idea. Like I said your daughter should have been vaccinated as she is vulnerable to it. But I'm very surprised that you don't know all this if you claim to be a nurse.
All Australian kids get it on the government funded vaccination program at 18 months (unless of course they can't for medical reasons). Herd immunity is so important.

Anotherwomaninthecrowd, I'm so sorry to hear that your child was vaccine damaged and that all that answered your comments ignored that part of your very true statement about vaccines.xxx
Stacyh I am 42, unvaccinated, very healthy plant based diet, and need no medications. Unlike most of the adults I know popping pills regularly. The issue most people have Is the schedule of lots of vaccines putting a heavy burden on the immune system due to the adjuvants such as aluminium and polysorbate combined. There is growing evidence that the aluminum binds to the virus, the polysorbate opens up the blood brain barrier and allows the aluminium covered virus to directly enter the brain whereby it is seen as an invader and inflammation surrounds it creating encephalitis.
I have had an epiphany. I think most antivaxxers are too young to have had any of the childhood illnesses. They are young enough to have been vaccinated as babies & toddlers. When their kids get chickenpox and go deaf because it affected the otic nerves or blind - optic nerves or have brain damage from them. Or get rubella or measles with a lot of the same complications. Or causes someone to miscarry or the baby is born with PREVENTABLE complications. THEN they will understand why the vaccines were invented. Whooping cough is already causing problems & making a comeback.
Me again. So far researchers have not been able to make a vaccine for illness that is caused by a virus (flu, common cold). The flu vaccine is made from specific strains. If they guess the wrong ones, the vaccine isn't as effective. I knew 3 people who were some of the last to get polio before the vaccines. All 3 had problems with post-polio(?). Whooping cough is back because of antivaxxers. If an epidemic of any of these illnesses ever happens again, the antivaxxers will find out WHY the vaccines were made.
We have a idiot mother at our church who is antivaxxer. She is about 20 years younger than I am (60). I can remember having both types of measles and chicken pox. Knowing that we got our 3 sons the chicken pox vaccine. I didn't want to go through it with them. No CP and no chance for shingles either. There are very good reasons why vaccines were invented. The illnesses could kill or maim for life. She still believes autism is caused by them. Recently an 28 mo child died from a severe reaction to a vaccine. So she has stepped up her antivax argument. She also sells essential oils now. As I am very sensitive to odors, I have no use for them. Can set off a migraine. Three other ladies also have the same problem with odors. The antivaxxer says we can't be allergic to the oils as they don't contain proteins. Penicillin has no proteins either and people are deathly allergic to it. People listen to this lady and don't check for the truth.
im glad the little girl is ok, and for someone to say its just chicken pox drives me crazy my son got them when he was 10 months old ( cant get the vaccinated for it till your 12 months) and that poor baby went threw hell. i had to take him out of daycare for fear of what else he might get from children not getting vaccinated.
Smart Mother with respect to vaccination, but why always need to thank the Lord when things go ok but never blame him for the bad stuff
i had aggressive chikenpox when i was six i had to go to the hospital i kept on fainting sand going unconscious i could've died-at least thats what my mum told me.I still have my chiken pox marks to this day i am 11.I had them everywhere AND I MEAN EVER-Y-WHER-E.
So by your own logic if everyone is vaxxing then if you have a few children that aren't vaxxed then it shouldn't affect the vaxxed children because they have been vaxxed and those children or individuals are not vaxxed because they are imuno-compromised and are that sensitive then why would they be out in a population where they can contract a flu or cold because those could theoretically kill them and they are more likely to contract.
So she survived hmm so did me and all my friends back in the day congrats kid your immunity system just got stronger
I grew up catching the "childhood illnesses I grew up catching the "childhood illnesses" that you can vaccinate for now. It was not unusual to come to elementary school on any given day; and find that someone's desk was empty and had been cleared out. Everyone would be quiet that day until we heard what had taken our classmate. It wasn't an everyday occurrence; but it got your attention no matter what school it happened in.
I wonder how many of these previously eradicated infectious diseases were reintroduced in the U.S. by illegal and unvaccinated immigrants.
I think chickenpox vaccines are not obligatory in some countries. I was raised in mexico and contracted chickenpox at 22 yo in France...
What's with the comment at bottom saying Andrew Wakefield committed suicide? He is alive and well and dangerous as an activist against vaccination. He directed an anti-vax film last year which has had wide circulation.
I was working at a pharmacy when the Shingles Vaccine came out, and we had a waiting list of people who wanted it, so whenever we got a new supply they would call and let them know, one lady asked how much it cost and was given the price, after which she informed them that she wouldn't pay that much for it. I figured that if she ever got the Shingles that she would regret her actions.
So sad I feel for her there some many problems like this now you can't take eggs,Peanuts and various other food to school because the youth of today have not been allowed to build up there immune system to fight it ( yes some people can't help it) but the majority can build a positive immune response! even every mosquito bite helps and next will not be as itchy or swollen!
Stupid a*s parents that believe that b******t should be jailed, and have their kids taken IMMEDIATELY!! Not only are you putting them in danger, but you a******s are putting everyone your kids come into contact with!! Vaccinate your kids!!!
Autismspeaks.org - "Study of over 95,000 children included 15,000 unvaccinated 2 to 5 year olds and nearly 2,000 kids already considered at high risk for autism" So how did these 2000 out of the 15,000 become high-risk without vaccines? Genetics.
The problem (as I see it) is too much of over-paranoic stupid people. "He was right, but CIA kidnapped him and they made him say he was lying. WHO tested vaccines and found they develop autism but they are corrupted by pharmaceutical companies." and so on and on. In some cases you can hear Mosad, KGB or some other agency instead of CIA (once I saw somewhere aliens...) and quite often I saw 'CERN scientists' (who are not trying to study elementary particles but to summon Satan from Saturn (in my opinion they shout choose Uranus, it would be great pun)). And what is the worst part according to me? Vaccination helps. For sure. But it is not 100% protection. And if you are exposed to high amount of people with some disease it weakens your immunity and it weakens effect of vaccination. So even vaccinated people might get the disease if they are unlucky and exposed enough.
I have four kids. They are all vaccinated. They are strong and very healthy. My oldest cannot have the DTap shot. He's allergic to it. So he has a special medical clearance for only that one vaccination. Doesn't mean he doesn't get the rest of them though. They may get certain immunities during breastfeeding but that is still not enough to make sure that they will make it through everything else. Whopping cough was a major scare two years ago for us and thankfully the kiddos made it through with no infection. People really need to stop making problems where they don't exist.
"They're finding, for example, when you've got a vaccine that targets only certain strains of disease where multiple strains are actually causing the disease, the vaccine is pretty effective at reducing the incidence of disease from that particular strain. But what happens is the other strains come and take their place … They come back even stronger. That's what [happened] with Prevnar, a vaccine for pneumococcus, pneumococcal disease. All infants that receive vaccines according to the CDC's standard immunization schedule receive a pneumococcal vaccine at 2, 4 and 6 months of age. That vaccine only targeted seven strains. Pneumococcal has 90 different strains capable of causing pneumococcal disease. They were pretty effective at reducing the amount of disease caused by the pneumococcal strains targeted by the vaccine. But what happened within just a few short years, the other strains became more prevalent, taking the place of the original strains [and] they became more virulent"

All I can say is I can't believe that I am still waiting for an intelligent comment to be made. Maybe the universe should have waited for you to be born and asked you in for advice. Science proves every day that when you mess with nature you are fighting the most powerful force in the universe. If you want a solution to disease you must do it natures way not yours, or pay the consequence. On rule of nature is that the strong survive. Nature also teaches us that there is always hope for the weak of body, soul and spirit. It has provided all the elements to cure and protect us. Yet we decide to try changing the elements of nature into toxic drugs called pharmaceuticals and so-called vaccines. Please educate yourselves about and the use of the elements that nature provides and recognizes., not the man made drugs that fail in every way and the body does not recognize. wake up from your dreamworld and live in the here and now the way the universe intended.
Then you should probably have read most of the comments and the articles and actual studies they link that prove that vaccines are both effective in reducing prevalence of disease and as such, deaths, while their side effects are few and far in between enough to justify taking the risk of a negative side effect to SAVE LIVES. If none of that sounds intelligent to you, I'm sorry, but the problem is not on our side.

That is me and my oldest. I had the chicken pox, measles, whopping cough, mumps, etc. as a kid and survived just fine. My particular immune system does well on its own. Several of the vaccines I've received later as a kid or as an adult caused severe reactions. I already had natural immunity to these diseases but the doctors gave the vaccines anyway. Now, maybe some or most need the vaccines, then go ahead, but do not force those of us who are allergic to the vaccines to have them.
Chicken pox is not life threatening to 99+% of kids. I can understand why those parents skipped that particular shot. They simply didn't..
Know their actions could kill your child. So I don't see any problem with their decision. This is a very rare outcome from their actions.

She's had 4 kids herself and has vaccinated each and every one of them. So actually... I know exactly what you are saying and still disagree.
Load More Replies...The problem with this kind of statement is that you're confusing correlation for causation. The fact that your child changed after vaccination is very likely not to have anything to do with vaccination, and had not someone dishonestly made you to think that it might be the cause, you would not have questioned it. Autism is not caused by outside factors. If you had not vaccinated your child, he would likely have presented the same changes. It's like putting your car in the driveway at the end of the day, and assuming it causes the sun to go down. It doesn't. It has been proven time and time again that vaccines don't cause autism. Let that go, for your children's sake.

If you chose not to vaccinate because you believe all the tin foil hat nonsense, then you're risking the lives of so many other people that you could protect instead. Even if there was a tiny risk of any of what you said being true, it would still be worth vaccinating... Its like never getting in a car for the risk of being in a car crash...
Load More Replies...Seatbelts can sometimes have negative side effects too, but would you let your children drive without them?

They were supposed to be watched and taken care of! This didn't happen and No they were not watched or quarantined these 14 individuals "Class A" patients that are total drug resistant TB strains! These 14 individuals have grown to over 10,000 "Class A" drug resistant TB patients wondering around our Republic spreading this new TB. These strains of TB are not the same strains of TB that were wiped out years ago and most of us adults were vaccinated against. There is no vaccination for this new strain and it continues to spread among the refugees and anyone they are in contact with! So while people are arguing over yes or no on vaccinations there are a number of new strains of diseases being passed around thanks to the stupidity of the "X president Obama" zeal i
Anti-vaxxers also believe that the Earth is flat and raw/ vegan food is good. That's why we call them idiots.
I'm all for vaccinating if there are health benefits for the child. Also, I do believe that vegan food is good, even though I'm not a vegan myself. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in :)

I understand that she wants her daughter to have as normal a life as possible, but the reality is that a transplant patient will forever have to be careful. The mother should have known better. Sometimes the vaccines are the cause of outbreaks, especially the live types. Some of us cannot have vaccines because the vaccines themselves cause life threatening reactions.

That's why they don't get vaccinated. That's why they come to the US to try and have a liveable life.

She stated when her child came in contact, because she was immunal suppressed, she took steps to try to ensure her daughter would not get it. Hence the picture about. Chicken pox has a long incubation period before you see any spots. Perhaps -YOU- should stop trying to push YOUR LYING PROPOGANDA based off paranoia and actually -READ- the information out there. By the way, if you can't understand the science behind this stuff, that doesn't mean it's 'bad' it just means you need to improve your own understanding.

Load More Replies...I seriously hope you're just trolling... The point is, if you are vaccinated, you don't pass on the virus to kids that cannot be vaccinated due to genuine reasons.
