I have been lucky enough to know several people who have received life changing amounts of money all at once. Most of these were musicians. I will not be giving names although some of you may recognize them from the actions. The absolute worst catastrophe I saw from it was one friend. He received $2.3 million as an advance. He immediately spent $1 million as the down payment for exotic cars, yes just down payment they were not bought fully for that amount. They were all custom ordered and would be arriving in months. My moms ex husbands mom won the lottery. I'm pretty sure it was at least a million before tax. I was probably 4 at the time. She passed away when it was 6 and he was an only child so he got most of it. All I know is that I'm 22 now and by the time I was 12 that money was long gone. If I was older I would have slapped both my mom and my stepdad in the face and told them to stop being idiots and save it or at least invest in something worth while. On a totally different note, a friend of my cousin won the lottery. The friend and his fiancée were due to get married soon, and the were having a baby. Do you get offered a financial advisor when you win the lotteries in the U.S.? Big winners in the U.K. get a one to help folk make the money work for them and to future proof their winnings, obviously some turn down the advisors help and their downfall is often documented in the media! Aside from that a buddy I used to work with won £2.4m, he was a 62 year old steel delivery driver and had no retirement plans or money, it set him up nicely, he bought a newer version of the car he already owned, a Ford Focus, cleared his mortgage and then retired, no flashy lifestyle, still had a beer in his local with the same friends he’d had for years, took his Mrs out for lunch in their local café, drank tea and enjoyed being a retired Grandparent, it was money well spent and ten years on he’s still happily drinking tea and spending time with family, I believe he’s helped his kids out with mortgages and the likes but he’s got his feet firmly planted on the ground, bless you Paddy you deserved it!

Pay off your own house, save a deposit for a house for each of your kids(not even a house, just a deposit) and... thats pretty much $1mil just there.
I'd upgrade my current house in a reasonable manner, get a driving license with a small car and a solid gaming PC - and that's all, I wouldn't know what else to do with a lottery win other than maybe buying higher quality groceries? (Maybe pay off my sister's depts out of spite to rub it under her nose that I have more money)
I never have understood the idea of just spending every cent of a huge sum on unnecessary stuff. Is basic financial sense that rare? You focus first on elimination of debt, then on essentials, then put as large a chunk as you can justify into retirement. Only once you're financially stable do you go spending like the money is water, and only with the paltry amount left after taking care to ensure your financial stability in the future.
