Woman Reveals The Reason Why She Lied About Being Allergic To Mushrooms After Husband Confronts Her
Food allergies are serious business and can sometimes even threaten a person’s life. It’s estimated that 11% of American adults have at least one food allergy, and that’s 27 million people. However, some people might not realize just how serious having a food allergy can be.
This woman, for example, claimed to have a mushroom allergy when she saw her sister-in-law sautéing mushrooms for the Thanksgiving turkey stuffing. But her statement seemed peculiar, since she had never had the allergy before and had eaten the same mushroom stuffing every year. After the sister-in-law laughed in her face, family drama ensued. So, the cook started wondering if her reaction was too harsh.

This fact puzzled the host, since every year before, the SIL had eaten the stuffing with no issues

Food allergies are life-threatening, while intolerances or preferences only cause discomfort

People don’t eat certain products or ingredients for a variety of reasons. Some might dislike the texture or the taste; others, like vegetarians or vegans, don’t eat some products because of ethical reasons. But having allergies is much more serious than just a simple preference or intolerance.
According to the Mayo Clinic, a food allergy causes the body’s immune system to react, and the symptoms can be life-threatening. A food intolerance, for example, would only cause digestive issues like gas, bloating, and diarrhea.
However, some people treat their food intolerances or dislikes as seriously as allergies. They might go so far as to believe they have a food allergy when they, in fact, do not have one. In 2019, researchers found that half of Americans who think they have or claim to have a food allergy actually don’t have one.
In their study, the researchers estimated that 10.8% of the respondents were allergic to at least one food. However, a whopping 19% believed they had a food allergy. The lead researcher of the study, Ruchi Gupta, who is also a professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University, urges people to actually get tested.
“There are so many adults out there who have a negative reaction to a food. It is really important to get a proper diagnosis so that they can really know if this is something treatable, like lactose intolerance, or if this is a life-threatening food allergy that they need to be very careful with.”
Cibophobia is the fear of a certain food and can develop after we learn something negative about the said food

In the update, the Thanksgiving host revealed that her sister-in-law might have a phobia of mushrooms. This could explain why she freaked out after seeing mushrooms in her food despite having eaten them previously without knowing they were there.
There are several food phobia disorders. Cibophobia is when a person has an irrational fear of a certain food. In some cases, people with cibophobia only eat a few foods, which can cause malnutrition. In other cases, they can’t eat meals that have been prepared by someone else, have unfamiliar ingredients, or are perishable. Cibophobia is not an eating disorder, yet it can go hand in hand with some EDs.
How do some people develop cibophobia in the first place? For some, it might be similar to the sister-in-law in this story. They might read about the negative impacts of a certain food in the news, see it on social media, or hear it in a conversation with friends.
Other times, they might have had a traumatic experience in the past. I, for example, started to dislike coffee after it made me violently ill one time while pulling an all-nighter in college. For other adults, cibophobia forms as they observe the eating behaviors of others in childhood. Let’s say your mother or father had a fear of a certain food; it’s likely that you’re going to develop it as well.
However, there might be some biological factors behind cibophobia, too. Genetics and other biological factors may be behind our developing certain phobias. Still, too much is unknown for us to be able to say for certain that cibophobia can be genetic, but changes in brain chemistry might lead to us developing food phobias.
The fact that the SIL had developed the allergy so suddenly puzzled the cook: “She’s never claimed any reaction to the stuffing”
Later, the brother gave an interesting explanation for his wife’s “allergies.”

Based on the update it sounds like SIL is on the border of Clod Cuckoo Land. (And no I did not misspell anything in that sentence.)
This is what’s truly at issue. Can you imagine what she must think about vaccines, the shape of the earth and the contrails of airplanes?!?! For starters!!!!! Also, how very & specially apt in which you’ve described SIL.
Load More Replies...Slight devils advocate: Allergies change during your lifetime and you can technically outgrow one allergen but get a new sensitivity instead, it happened to me. But you should NEVER lie about allergies bevause you make it harder for actual sufferers to be taken seriously.
I meant to say the same thing, but you beat me to it. I'd just add that often people don’t take dislikes and “sensitivities” seriously. For example, I dislike cheese. But it’s virtually impossible to get a hamburger without cheese. Even when hamburgers and cheeseburgers are both offered on a menu, when I order a hamburger I usually get a cheeseburger. No, I can’t just peel the cheese off, because the cheese flavor remains. It’s gotten so the only times I can get my sandwich prepared correctly is when I claim an allergy. So I agree, lying is wrong. It makes life so much harder and so much more dangerous for true allergy sufferers. But I want a hamburger, not a cheeseburger. How can I get waitstaff and cooks to take my request seriously? I just want a hamburger without cheese. It’s on the menu….

Listen, I developed an intolerance for wheat late in life—-which means I know what good bakery stuff taste like, and I miss it because most if the gluten free stuff is s**t. But once I was diagnosed (yes you read that right, a doctor told me to avoid wheat, not some crackpot blog or crystals or any of that b******t, a real doctor), I let everyone I would spend holidays or vacations with, plus my coworkers, that they can have all the food with wheat in it that they want, I don’t need any special dishes, but they shouldn’t be insulted if I didn’t try any of the dished they make that may contain wheat. It’s not that I don’t like them, it’s that they don’t like me. People understand, and many will try to include foods that are gluten free—-some even take it as an interesting challenge to make a GF food that’s tasty, since there are different ingredients and techniques to it. I never just spring it on people last minute, and I never throw a fit if I haven’t spoken up and there’s nothing I can eat. Informing people is MY responsibility, because having to avoid gluten is MY responsibility. If I fail at that, it’s MY fault, and no one else’s.
"[OP] made my wife feel stupid". If someone pointing out literal facts makes you feel stupid... Also, feeling stupid because you were caught in a lie...
I'm not a mushroom fan. If my wife and I forage I'll cook them for her (morel, golden oyster normally) and try a bite, but I generally don't like them. If they were in a dish I like, I'd rather not know because I'd get in my head and then not like the dish. But I'd never lie and claim to be allergic.
I don’t like mushrooms taste or texture, but if it’s combined with other ingredients then it’s not a strong flavour so I wouldn’t notice them
Load More Replies...I hate people who play the fake allergy game. I've had people who were "allergic" come in and I take extra protocols to ensure they aren't exposed. A few have come in later ordering dishes where the allergen can't be removed and said it was fine. It wasn't an allergy, just a preference. THEN JUST SAY THAT! We can accommodate a preference quickly, an allergy requires a lot of extra work! And yes, I know that cooking denatures some proteins eliminating the allergen - my stepson is allergic to stone fruit, but can eat them cooked. These people admitted it wasn't an allergy after multiple claims.
At any point the sister in law could have owned up to fibbing because she doesn't like mushrooms, admittedly it can be disorienting to realize there are ingredients in something that you were unaware of and don't normally consume for whatever reason (allergies aside); the allergy excuse seems like a knee jerk excuse blurted out that she felt she needed to then commit to
I can sort of relate…I hate mushrooms! Awful texture in my opinion and when they’re raw they taste like dirt (or in my mind that’s what dirt tastes like)
There's hating them and then claiming you have an allergy to something you have eaten many times before because of tiktok...

This is why you call it an aversion, sweetheart. PLEASE don't call aversion allergies, it makes others discount real allergies.
We need a different word for different types of allergies. A mild rash is drastically different than anaphylaxis.
Getting an upset stomach or the runs from a food is more of an intolerance than an allergy. And allergy can be anaphylaxis or hives, things like that. I have foods I'm intolerant to, and ones - like shellfish - to which I'm deathly allergic.
Fixed the stupid downvote…I agree with you I’m lactose intolerant I can drink a glass of milk but you won’t want to be near me once it hits my gut! …I had a coworker who has a severe shellfish allergy…she even carries an EpiPen because of it (the only reason she survived her first attack was she was working in a hospital and had the reaction on her lunch break in the cafeteria!) yet others coworkers still used to say things like “oh just try it, it won’t k**l you”…um actually yes, it can!! (These are people working in a hospital saying this to her!)
Load More Replies...Actually, the SIL embarrassed herself by lying about an allergy. And, OMG, she is freaking out because of a TV show. Is she 8 years old? I think she needs to stay off TikTok and just not eat the stuffing if she is suddenly "allergic" to it.
Tbf to the crazy sil (not that I think she's right in any way) some medical/scientific experts are calling out fungi as the next potential danger to our health. Things like spores in the air infecting our lungs.
The spores from fungi that have been around for a lot longer than humans have been a species? Those spores are the next potential danger to human health? Maybe don't trust medical/scientific 'experts' who think 'The Last of Us' was a documentary.

Load More Replies...Everyone should just chill about other peoples allergy beliefs . Inform them of any food issues but then take responsibility for oneself. Also to all the naysayers... You can develop an allergic reaction out of the blue for no reason to foods that you've eaten many times before. A family member in her 70s developing a sudden allergy to a food, full anaphylaxis. You can also have allergic reactions for no reason. I spent a season waking every morning and as my bodies processes kicked in would develop hives all over, no reason, was even allergy tested and came up positive for every including the saline they use as the control. Then after a few months it just up and went away . They had no idea why this was happening. So don't be so dismissive.
