Every person, even the most multitasking one in the world, has their own limit of capabilities, after reaching which memory begins to fail, and mistakes, both small and large, are inevitable. I think any of you who have had to perform many work tasks at once alone will agree with this.
So the user u/ExternalScary9392, the author of the story that we’re going to tell you today, also once encountered the problem of mistakes that we make when trying to multitask heavily. The result was a conflict with the customer, and the author, in their own words, is still tormented by remorse…

The customers left and the server said that it was ‘a good idea.’ But then they started to feel remorse and took it online seeking support
So, the Original Poster (OP), in their own words, is a server, and has been doing so for over six years, so they have enough work experience. And so, on the day when all this happened, the author again went to work at the pizzeria early in the morning. This pizzeria has a morning buffet, which is usually very popular among clients.
This happened this time too – the author was alone on the floor, and they had to serve 7 tables at the same time. Apart from them, there was a manager in the room and no one else. Well, you know perfectly well how it all happens – cafes and restaurants are always understaffed since ‘nobody wants to work’. However, let’s get back to our story.
So, an elderly couple at one of the tables ordered a gluten free pizza, and the author took this order. But as a result of the confusion with other orders, this one somehow fell out of their mind. Well, all the clients saw how the server was trying to cope alone with all the orders that piled up on them, and they understood everything. But, alas, not this couple…
A few minutes later, the author approached the couple to check on them, realized their mistake and, instantly apologizing, vowed that they would now accept their order. So they did – but after a few more minutes, when the server passed near this table, the old lady stood right in front of them and blocked their path by putting her arms up in a ‘T’ in front of them. Well, for the author of the post, in their own words, ‘it was the last straw to break the camel’s back’.
The author asked her to remove her hands from their face, and the client continued to shower them with reproaches for ‘negligence’ and ‘poor service.’ Then the woman’s husband stood up and said something like “screw this [damn] pizza, let’s get out of here!” To this the server replied that this was a great idea, and simply stormed away.
When the couple approached the manager to pay, the original poster asked just to let them go. And so it happened. Other customers who saw how this ugly scene unfolded simply tipped the server to make this day a good one for them. But the OP still felt guilty for kicking out customers for the very first time in their life.

“Of course, service is very important, and no one likes to wait too long for their orders, but we are all humans, and no one likes to listen to insults even more so,” says Vlad Ostometsky, the administrator of the UNIT Cafe in Odessa, Ukraine, whom Bored Panda asked for a comment here. “Therefore, any unmotivated rudeness on the part of customers is clearly unacceptable.”
“In addition, in my opinion, there is a clear higher-ups’ mistake here, because sending only one manager and one server to shift during the busiest hours means deliberately dooming employees to almost inevitable mistakes. If the management of the pizzeria was trying to save on wages here, then it lost on the loyalty of staff and clients,” Vlad summarizes.
In turn, commenters on the original post also massively agree that the pizzeria where the author works, apparently, looks like a terribly run place. As for the OP’s answer, it is, according to many people in the comments, quite justified. “They went way over the line & deserved to get nuked. We can’t use it often but when it’s deserved it’s gotta be in your arsenal,” someone aptly wrote.
In any case, according to some commenters, you should treat rude people the same way they treat you. “You give people the same respect that they give you. And they gave you none. I am a former pizza server working buffets and I can honestly say that it is the older set that is normally the biggest jerks. If you don't like hearing this, then maybe you are one of them. Also, the generation war is not the same as racism, sexism, or any other ism. When I have gotten griped at or yelled at by a customer, in some cases to the point of tears, the person was over the age of forty. When a restaurant is busy and you are by yourself, it is easy to forget customer order. Most will just remind you and you go about your day. Finally, the term Karen is not in anyway the same thing as the n-word, the c-word, or any other slur. It does not make real Karens look bad, I know two Karens and I know that the term is not talking about them. Maybe if people treated people in the service industry with respect we wouldn't feel the need to go off on an unruly customer.
deanna woods, I agree 100%. I work in healthcare and it's always the older crowd that is incredibly rude and disrespectful. And they're the ones who talk about kids today. or this generation, no, the younger generation are always so polite,, and super nice..

Translation: "Work was busy. I forgot part of an order. The customer complained in earshot of the manager. Manager stepped in and said it was on the house, then later scolded me. I'm humiliated, so I went online to get validation.".... Usually I give ppl the benefit of the doubt. But this has some major flaws. 1) No elder woman is going to put her arms out like that and try physically intimidate someone in a busy space where she could get knocked down and break something. 2) OP's response was too perfect. "That's incredibly rude!" 3) other customers were giving her huge tips to reward her for her bravery. Uh-huh. 4) OP says they were eating from the buffet. No sane person allergic to gluten eats from a cheap buffet. Cross-contamination risk is too high. 5) You don't "throw in" a GF pizza. You need a sterilized prep surface and a sterilized pan or separate oven. 6) If they were being a**holes, they wouldn't have tried to pay after OP said it was free.
Oh my God you're so wrong on literally every point I had to comment. You've obviously never worked in the service industry. A) the SERVER comped the meal, not the mgr. Mgr just agreed. 1) Yes they do. I've seen this. They're lacking self awareness and everyone treats Grandma with kid gloves so they expect it to continue. Old white women are the WORST. 2) Her response was fine?? You think that was some witty retort that needed planning?? I'm sure she's also paraphrasing a bit for brevity. 3) She never said the customers were rewarding her for her bravery. She said she had good tippers and large parties on a very busy day. You need to work on your reading comprehension. 4) there are different levels of gluten intolerance, and as long as it's not VERY serious, a gluten-free person would love a buffet. I can't eat gluten without getting a stomach ache so yes, I'll have a salad, cottage cheese, fresh veggies from a buffet any day.

First of all, stop with that played out "no one wants to work" c**p, yes, people do want to work. They absolutely do want to work. They do not want to put up with the verbal abuse that you just laid out... Stop blaming staffing shortages on."no one wants to work" and put the blame where it belongs, boss's don't want to pay a livable wage and a majority of the bosses will let customers disrespected employee., So yes, people DO want to work..
“People wonder why the younger generation don’t want to work” We have ALL had to deal with aholes in life whether it’s work or any other time. You are not special! Good lord the entitlement is crazy!
OP would not have lasted 5 minutes in the kind of work environments I had to endure. Now, I'm not saying anyone should have to endure that. I am glad things are changing and harassment and abuse is no longer just "part of the job." I wanted the next generation to have it better than I did. But maybe show a bit of gratitude for those who worked so hard to make sure that you didn't have to endure that same abuse?

I'm sorry you had a rough customer and bad day at work. Guess you weren't all alone as other employees are mentioned in the story. Guess you're an ageist prick since you feel the need to mention age. You didn't deserve the rudeness, but you deserve to take some of the responsibility as you didn't treat the customer right to begin with. That doesn't excuse their behavior, but it does explain it. I'm just going to assume that when someone forgets your order you're 100% gracious and understanding. Unless they're older than you, because you are demonstrably an ageist POS prick.
