Jameela Jamil Slams Georgia’s Abortion Law And Shares Her Own Abortion Story And Not Everyone’s Supportive
British actress Jameela Jamil once known mainly for her role on the TV series The Good Place, has made a name for herself on social media platforms for her unapologetic messages on feminism and the entertainment industry. Jamil has made waves online again recently for calling out Georgia’s move to ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat has been detected and sharing her own abortion story in the process.
The actress and body positivity activist called the bill “inhumane” and “blatantly demonstrative of a hatred of women” in a series of tweets. Jamil went on to reveal that she herself had had an abortion at a young and said: “it was the best decision” she ever made. As with her other candid statements she has made before the response to her tweets were mixed.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) signed legislation this week that banned abortions once a fetus has a detectable heartbeat, which generally occurs during six weeks of pregnancy. It includes a penalty for those who perform abortions of up to 10 years in prison. It doesn’t explicitly exempt women who perform their own abortions with drugs, so there’s speculation about whether they would also be subject to criminal charges. It has been suggested that it could even lead to murder charges for women who have abortions, but experts say it’s far from clear.

She pointed out the issue of rape and how she believed forcing women to carry the baby of their rapist demonstrated “hatred of women.” According to the GPB women would still be able to receive an abortion under the new law if the pregnancy is believed to be “medically futile,” the woman’s life is at risk or if a police report has been filed related to rape or incest.
After criticizing the bill she revealed that she herself had had an abortion at a young age

‘The Good Place’ actress said that she had gotten pregnant young and that her decision to terminate her pregnancy was “the best decision” she ever made. Jamil explained that she had not been ready for a baby emotionally, psychologically or financially and brought up that many children end up in foster homes as a result of mothers in unfit situations. According to Children’s Rights, on any given day, there are nearly 443,000 children in foster care in the United States.

She ended her thread by stating that she did not intend to make and “diss” towards foster homes but instead felt that because of the bill Georgia could become “inundated with children who are unwanted.” Jamil is not the first celebrity to share their abortion story. Some other notable names who have spoken out about the controversial topic include Busy Philipps, Rose, McGowan, Nicki Minaj, and Naya Rivera.

Share on FacebookWhat “pro-lifers” don’t seem to understand is that they are in fact not “pro-lifers” after all, they are only “pro-Birth”. They don’t care about what happens to baby once it’s born. They don’t care that the parents didn’t want or couldn’t cope with child so end up resenting the child and not giving it the best life or neglecting. They don’t care that hundreds of thousands of children are waiting to be adopted so why not just add one more. There are more children with no families than families wanting to adopt them. And it can take years to be adopted and sometimes not at all. There are many children in and out of care being mistreated, abused, neglected etc. What a way to grow up thinking no one loves you and not having a loving family. There are women who have been raped and have fallen pregnant, that “pro-Birth” still expect them to give birth to. The woman has gone through enough without having to have a child spawned by their rapist. Co parenting with their rapist would make a great family dynamic NOT
Same as pregnancies from incest, co-parenting with your dad, brother, uncle etc. Pro-Birthers don’t care that the pregnancy could kill the mother, leaving behind friends and family who love them or children they already have or the fact the baby is severely disabled, disfigured or so sick it’s life will be short and in pain. Maybe all these “pro-lifers” should adopt at least one child each if they actually care about the child’s future. A child’s life does not starts and finish at the birth so you need to look at the possible consequences of being born unwanted or unable to be cared for etc. And the effect it can have on that person for the rest of their life. That is not “pro-life”.
Load More Replies...I completely understand why many are opposed to abortion. But banning isn't the answer, as someone mentioned above, forcing women to go ahead with unwanted pregnancy is torture and violation of human rights. If you are against abortion, do everything you can to end/change the various things that lead to abortion in society. You have your work cut out for you, don't just try and ban something which is necessary and required.
Exactly. I personally couldn't go through an abortion. So I make everything I can to not get pregnant. If you're against abortion - go ahead and support places that give out contraception, support sex education - things that have been actually proven to lower the number of abortions. Banns have not.
Load More Replies...I think people underestimate how heavy of a burden you place on a child that wasn't wanted. I've read a couple of stories of the people who grew up with that and it certainly wasn't easy. Many of them are scarred for life never being able to recover from the fact that their mother didn't want them to come to this world but was forced to. Their childhood is terribly difficult because of this. They feel not worthy, they're likely to do drugs, they have problems having healthy relationships. Some women are simply not meant to be mothers. Don't have the capacity. And some of these women do get pregnant. But they all should have the choice to make the decision not to continue the pregnancy. And if you're wondering how I would feel if I was the fetus being aborted - I wouldn't know about it. And if my mother didn't wish for me to be born for any reason, I'd be all for her to make that decision. The new laws in Georgia break my heart.
America is a fu€ked up place. How is abortion still an issue. Most places in Europe it’s not an issue. Maybe it’s due to religion?
Yes you're correct, this is all happening because of conservative Christians. They simply won't let the issue go. At this point it's truly about hurting and controlling women. They don't care if we die from child birth or from a botched abortion, only the lives of the fetus matters. It's sickening.

Improve access to safe and effective contraception, be aggressive in prosecuting rape and molestation to prevent unwanted pregnancies that come from violence, increase the financial equity so that women (especially women of color) can afford to make different choices without sacrificing their longterm wellbeing, provide quality and affordable childcare, focus on creating prenatal services that ensure that every women/child can go through pregnancy without risk of death due to complications. That is how you eliminate abortion in America.
This 100%. The abortion rate is dropping every year due to improvements like the things you mention. I would like to add the need fro improvements in foster care and adoptions. The problem is pro"life" people aren't really pro life. They are only pro birth. I have mentioned the contraceptive part and education part to a few pro"lifers" (I know this is just anecdotal) and they have just said people should just wait until they are married or abstinence is the only way.

She had already had 1 healthy baby; she took care of herself. A while later she fell pregnant with me. Why did her body decide to reject a foetus at that time? As for the comments about murder, oh please. The writer of the original piece said she was young; she said it was the best decision of her life. It was - it gave her an opportunity to make something of her life and make sure she is in a place where she can gift a child a happy, secure and loving life.

I've always wanted to be a mother, and have tried for years, yet I'm still pro choice. I grew up with many, MANY foster children coming through our home, or staying permanently. I firmly believe there are too many people on this planet. While abortion should never happen, making it illegal just means that there are no safe abortions. What's more important another baby born or an already alive person losing their life? Apparently the unborn is truly more important. I hope to see mass exodus of women from states that pass legislation like this. The same politicians who make abortions illegal also take money away from WIC, early childhood literacy programs, and public education. Those jerks cannot tell me they are pro-life, they are merely pro-birth. Oh, and good luck taking care of that baby if you are poor. This whole issue makes me so mad. When the bible was written we didn't even have antibiotics, it made perfect sense to encourage everyone to breed at will. NOW IT DOESN'T! Our population is destroying this planet, we need fewer people not more. I know that's an unpopular opinion.

How does this "pro life" mentality go hand in hand with supporting death penalty, separating immigrant parents from their children, war mongering and so on? These people are not "Christians", they use a perversion of the Christian faith under a false name as an excuse for their agenda of grabbing any kind of power they can get. It is the same kind of power that slave owners sought and made excuses for. It is sick and and revolting and should be firmly and loudly opposed.
Please don't tar us all with the same brush. I am "pro-life" in a broader sense, and also oppose the death penalty, separating immigrant parents from their children, war mongering etc. I also don't mind identifying myself as "anti-abortion", which I don't see as a negative label, any more than anti-war, anti-racist, anti-bad-stuff-in-general. I also identify as a Christian (though I don't belong to any particular church) but that's of very limited relevance to my views on abortion: if I were ever lose my religious faith I would not then suddenly decide that depriving a child of his or her life is morally acceptable.

Some people choose not to eat meat or use animal products to prevent unnecessary cruelty to animals and I respect the choices of any individual who chooses to eat meat or not. Load More Replies...Here’s a solution that everyone should be happy with. Abortion is illegal. Early adoption is controlled by the state. Women should have the zygotes removed before the second trimester but “give them over to the care of the state.” That way it’s not an abortion, the woman is just giving the child up for adoption. Since it’s a person after all. Republican men should start stepping up to carry the adoptive zygotes to term. Problem solved.
We have one half the country legalizes marijuana and abortion not even be thought and the other half banning abortion and turning the country back a whole century. We are more divided now than we ever have been. So far my state, NC, hasn't even brought up the change of their law, but if they do it's time to move west.
Body Autonomy. It’s generally considered a human right. Body autonomy means each person has control over whom or what uses their body, for what, and for how long. It’s why you can’t be forced to donate blood, tissue, or organs; even if you’re dead. Even if donating that blood, or those tissues, or organs would save or improve the lives of 20 people. It is also why someone can’t touch you, have sex with you, or use your body in any way without your continuous consent. It is a basic principle in law. Simply put, a fetus is using someone’s body parts. Therefore, under body autonomy, it is there by permission, not right. It needs a person’s continuous consent to be and remain there. If the person carrying the fetus denies or withdraws consent, that person has a right to have the fetus removed at that moment. Bodily autonomy says if someone needs another person’s body part to live, they can legally be denied their use.
I demand that the pro-birthers who passed this law be required to take the pregnant woman (and any other dependants she may have) into their home. They must care for her, and provide for her, until she has the baby. Once the baby is born, they must adopt the child if the mother still does not want it. If she has changed her mind, and wants to keep it, then they must fund the child's education and continue to provide for the child, and the mother, until the child graduates from college. They must do this with ALL of the women who are now affected by this law. The law that they have passed has long-term affects on all parties involved and they should be required to directly compensate for those affects. Since non of them would ever consider something so intrusive, I demand that they repeal the intrusive law that they just created. If your "laws" are harming the individuals who must comply with those laws, then you have no business making those laws.
Does she genuinely believe that was the best decision FOR THE BABY? She thinks she would be such a terrible mother or that whoever else cared for her child would be so horrific at it that her child is better off dead? Wow.
I think putting "pro" in pro-life makes it seem like a good happy reality where everyone's happy. A more fitting name is "anti-choice".
That's somewhat absurd since almost everybody is anti-choice in some ways: very few would advocate total anarchy with no laws whatsoever. If you oppose legal penalties for drunk driving, murder, rape, burning down your ex's house, whatever, that is in a sense anti-choice. Personally, I have no problem with "anti-abortion".

I also identify as a Christian (though I don't belong to any particular church) but that's of very limited relevance to my views on abortion: if I were ever lose my religious faith I would not then suddenly decide that depriving a child of his or her life is morally acceptable.

The only people who will know their periods are late will have the funds for tons of tests. Also teen bodies are not meant for pregnancy. This can test a young body beyond repair.

Some people choose not to eat meat or use animal products to prevent unnecessary cruelty to animals and I respect the choices of any individual who chooses to eat meat or not. In the same way, I respect that people also want to protect unborn children. However, killing animals for sustenance is an individual's choice, just as abortion should be an individual's choice.
Wow, 10 people have downvoted me asking an objective question. That's typical of the pathetic BP commentariat. Happens all the time. How can anybody downvote a question that comes without opinion or malice?

Oh, thank goodness you let us know the different forms that exist! We wouldn't know about them otherwise... bar for doctors, nurses in doctors surgeries etc telling us already. None are 100% by the way. Or do you suggest we use as many as possible at the same time?
Load More Replies...Anyone know of any initiatives against this? Besides silly Alyssa Milano, is there anything being done? It seems like women who have miscarriages in Alabama / Georgia would be the ones most capable of taking this on legally since the state might try to prosecute them, and then the whole thing just falls apart. Or women who have abortions outside the state and return. Seems like those arrests won’t hold up in court.
Does anyone really care what she thinks? Have no clue who she is so is this suppose to change my mind? Best decision for the baby? B***h, you KILLED that human! Next time use protection so we don't have to read your stupid comment. Her decision but let's not put it out there to show how stupid you are.
Contraception isn’t 100% effective. Also unwanted pregnancies don’t just happen to promiscuous people. It happens in long term relationships, marriage etc. also after rape the person is usually in hospital, not thinking straight, too distraut and distracted with other thoughts.
Load More Replies...The unborn fetus has no perspective. So the rights of a living, breathing person is worth less than the rights of a fetus that cant survive outside the womb, that has no identity. Also the unborn fetus could become the next Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin for example. So that argument is just ludicrous.
Load More Replies...She didn’t have a baby. What about the best decision for all the sperm that could have had chances to fertilize eggs and become doctors one day?
Load More Replies...Unwanted... you said it. The child is unwanted so then what? Don't throw adoptions at me - they can be fraught with problems and there are seriously way too many unwanted children in foster or children's homes already.
Load More Replies...When men can get pregnant then they will be mentioned.
Load More Replies...Contraception fails. Simple fact. Hard to judge a situation unless you have been in it. I have. Opinions should still have some facts, knowledge or personal experience behind them. Always. Otherwise they are just as likely to be some bigoted view.
Load More Replies...Yeah coz it is that simple 🙄 haha, ever heard of contraception failing, rape, deformities, risk to mums life etc.

Load More Replies...GTF over yourself. Women don’t get pregnant when they’re alone in the room. Pregnancy is 100% caused by men. If you’re so “concerned”, then you should be out there fighting like hell for a woman’s right to choose, for free access to birth control, and full, comprehensive sex education. ...///... You can let go of your balls now.
Load More Replies...Did you fall of the stairs and on your head repeatedly? I mean you must be able to type a better sentence than that surely.
Load More Replies...And to that same argument, what if we don't abort a fetus and it becomes the next Ted Bundy? The next big serial killer? Rapist? Torturer? You want to make women slaves to your beliefs "just in case" an aborted fetus becomes a genius. Makes sense. *eye roll*

Load More Replies...Ahh yes, keep your legs closed. The argument of every misogynist who wants to control women and their bodies. To people like you, we should just let men off the hook for jizzing wherever they please right?
Load More Replies...a) She's not bragging - she's sharing a personal story. b) For you, it's a baby, for other people it might be just a fetus. If you're in the second group you should have every right to act like it including by pursuing an abortion. So if she doesn't think it was a baby, she didn't kill a baby.
Load More Replies...Because birth control fails. A LOT. Because people don't have access to proper birth control. Because some people didn't have proper sex education. Also, isn't decided you aren't responsible enough to properly raise and child and get an abortion pretty f*****g responsible?
Load More Replies...Abortion isn't murder. Stop using emotional manipulation to try and get people to see your side. It's gross.
Load More Replies...Good for you. Someone might see it differently, though. And going through pregnancy is not a thing to be thought of lightly, it takes an insane amount of energy and you definitely should only do it if you want to.
Load More Replies...Is it wickedness where there was marital rape involved? Is it wickedness when there is incest involved? Was it wicked when the girl really loved the boy and believed him when he said it back and all would be of? Who is "wicked" here?
Load More Replies...We do accept them. We're only saying that the decision should fall to the pregnant person. If you're not for abortion - don't get one. It's as simple as that. Your body, your choice. Just let us who aren't against it make the decision on our own as well. I couldn't go through an abortion, I'd always regret it. But I don't think my point of view should matter in case of a different pregnant person.
