When brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright built and flew the first fully practical airplane, they probably couldn't imagine how far we'd take it.

Now, we're flying hundreds of people at a time, sending rovers to other planets, and launching interstellar probes.

So we decided to stop for a second and appreciate the fact that humanity has conquered the skies. And we've picked the subreddit r/aviation to do it.

Created back in 2008, this online community unites 1.2 million members who constantly share anything and everything related to helicopters and rotorcraft, airships, balloons, paragliders, winged suits and anything that sustains you in the air. Here are some of their top posts.

Good write up here: https://theaviationgeekclub.com/heres-the-only-picture-of-concorde-flying-at-supersonic-speed/amp/ Concorde had to slow down as the Tornado couldn’t keep up in supercruise - using reheat uses massive amounts of fuel.

Unbelievable skill of an incredibly experienced and downright intuitive pilot, Captain Sullenberger. Even though the majority of water landings do not end well, Sully managed to bring the plane down smoothly and safely, with zero fatalities—-and Sully wasn’t a young man at the time, which perfectly illustrates the priceless value of long years of experience, especially in fields where inexperience can cost lives. If anyone but Sully had been in the pilot’s seat that day, I doubt this crash would’ve ended so miraculously. If Sully had been forced to retire, and some young hot dog pilot was put in that cockpit that day, the plane would probably have crashed in a populated place and killed people on the ground, as well as everyone on board. Don’t throw people away, ignore them, or out and out disrespect them (you know, the dismissive, cruel, and derisive “OK Boomer” b******t), simply because they’re older, because you then throw away their sorely needed experience and expertise, to keep your company—-or family—-running cohesively.

Wow. I can only imagine what a bear it was to bring this plane back in one piece with such a large hole blown in one propeller, not to mention other damage.. Must’ve made awful balance and power issues. Kudos to the crew.

Same here, age 62. My first job at 18 was at an airport (not an airline, no way). There is just something incredibly cool about landings and takeoffs. Back in the day, on summer evenings, I used to park in the lot at the end of the runway to sit or lay back on my car’s hood and watch planes land and takeoff. I was never alone in that. There were a lot of other people, including people bringing their kids, watching with me. Not only is there always a constant breeze at an airport, we also got a great live show—-for free! Sadly, we can’t really do stuff like that anymore, because a bunch of a******s ruined it for us. But I have some extremely fond memories of spending summer evenings like that, and the camaraderie of the other people there, comparing notes on all the different planes we watched.

I had a somewhat closer view of an Emirates A380 the first week it flew into Manchester. Was driving past the end of the runway when the traffic ground to a halt. Police car presence and a whole bunch of people pointing cameras to the sky. I had the roof down and all of a sudden the sky disappeared. The A380 is one heck of a fig bucker! Regularly see it from my lounge window and you can easily identify it as it so much bigger than anything else!

Not for a B29, for a A1 Skyraider. B29's never launched from carriers, and were long retired by the 60's. The A-1 used the same engines and was a propeller close in support and was used from Korea through Vietnam. Both used the same R-3350 Engine.
