We’ve gathered some of the most egregious examples of “Instagram versus reality” on the internet. We also got in touch with Erin Vogel, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to discuss beauty standards and how they warp people’s perceptions. “Beauty standards are rooted in systems of power. People with privilege set standards that are not attainable—and maybe not desirable—for most people. For example, in the United States, many beauty standards are centered around White people’s appearances.”

I don't understand how they can't see what we see. They think their photos look fabulous. In reality, a woman with these proportions would topple over- chest down, stick legs splayed about, and gargantuan head and lips bobbling about.
However, setting those standards aside, we also wanted to hear her opinion on the sorts of images seen here. After all, beauty standards are one thing, but some of these are so overly edited that there is no way they look “good.” “We spend a lot of time on social media, and we adjust to seeing and using filters!” she shared.

No, it's definitely not! But: if she thinks look in the photoshopped image is better, I wonder why she does her actual make-up so harsh (which definitely ages her). I would think you would try to emulate the photoshopped image as much as you could, with a more natural look (still a ton of make-up, but more of the "no make-up look").

I have a short persons torso on a tall persons legs, resulting in an average height. a lot of the time, stood next to taller family members, my hips are at the same height as theirs, but I'm shorter. I still don't look weird like this.

A woman I worked with had a WhatsApp image - clearly heavily filtered - that I assumed was of her teenage daughter. Then I met the daughter, so I asked who the picture was of, and she said it was of herself. She 'admitted' to using a photo a few years old, and having a lot of make up on. Absolutely no chance at all - even with out meeting her you would know it was fake. I really don't get it. Another co worker also used a heavily filtered picture, but she said so and asked what we thought - I was impressed with her filter skills even if I thought she looked better without - and that I do get. Seems really odd to pretend you didn't filter.
