Considering the fact that we have to exist in the same vessels for our entire lives, it's interesting how little most of us actually know about the human body. Why am I always getting hiccups, and how the heck do I eliminate them? Why does my leg fall asleep every time I lay on my side? Even if you hit the gym every day and are in excellent shape, you can likely still benefit from learning more about that complex body you’re in.

So below, we’ve gathered some of the most useful “human body cheat codes” Redditors have shared to help you pandas get the most out of that mysterious body of yours. Keep reading to also find an interview with the curious Redditor who started this conversation, and be sure to upvote the hacks you plan to utilize in your own life!

“If You Have A Leg Cramp, Pull Back Your Big Toe”: 40 Human Body Cheat Codes That You Might Not Have Known You Needed I have fairly low blood pressure and I often get dizzy if I get up too abruptly. If it happens, clench your abdominal muscles to force blood back upwards and it goes away immediately.

One of the things they tell you to do when you give blood. Yes it true about the bum clenching

Yes! I think you cou can also tighten the muscles in your arm that you're not using to give blood. You can alternate between clenching and relaxing, I think 10-30 seconds each.

If you get this after a meal - drink some water - stomach etc. draws water to digest food. Lowers blood volume hence lower blood pressure maybe even shock. Used to get REALLY sleepy after lunch, found out and extra 8-12 oz of water fixed it. Discovered all this when reading "History of US Army Medical Corps" and a book desert survival. During WW2 plasma kept wounded from going into shock (sleepy being a mild form of shock) from low blood volume & if lost in desert don't eat food if no water.

Stretch every day. 90% of the problems that people get later in life, whether it is muscle related or not, usually stems from muscles being too tight & pulling where/when they should not.

Mmmm it’s a little more complex than that. Some muscles feel tight because they’re actually overstretched and need strengthening. Better to focus on alignment or joint mobility programs.

I've been a casino cocktail waitress for two decades and it's an incredibly physically demanding job. I've also been doing Pilates and yoga since I was 16, and I never ever ever hurt my back. All the bending, lifting, walking, reaching and pulling that I do and I've never blown my back out because I keep my core muscles strong. Also, you have way more powerful orgasms when you have strong core muscles so just trust me, do the Pilates.

Stretch your back BEFORE you get out of bed, while you're still warm under covers. Just take 3 to 5 minutes and hug your knees to your chest, roll your hips to the side, etc. I haven't pulled a muscle in my back once since I started doing this every morning, and (before I started) I would tweak my back a few times per year from something as mundane as tying my shoe or sneezing wrong lol. Trust me, this works 👍👍

Absolutely. Until last year, I worked at my friend's ranch. Age 72. Wrangled horses, hoisted 50-pound bags of feed over my shoulder and walked across field, tilled garden space by hand, climbed trees, cleared creeks. Then she passed away and farm sold. Can verify without that stretching and physical activity, I went from feeling 20 to feeling 120 :snap: that fast.

Also just movement in general. Your lymphatic system does not have a pump like your heart or lungs. It relies on body movement to move the fluids around.

Exercise is also part of this. Sometimes muscle imbalances happen because the muscle on one side is stronger than the muscle on the other side of the joint. So focus on strengthening the joints instead of just exercising to lose weight and you'll probably have less joint pain.

In my early 40s I started waking up with lower back pain. Decided to try yoga before i went for medical interventions and it's pretty much fixed it. Working on core strength and flexibility is critical.

We were also curious about the best "human body cheat codes" Alex knows. "This seems like an obvious one, but drinking water when you wake up is a must," he shared. "It’s such a simple ‘hack’, but is an amazing habit to build into your daily routine."

"Another one, which is kind of cheating as it’s my own comment, but when people are together in a group, look at the direction of people's feet to see who they are interested in talking to," Alex added. "It’s not always the case, but it’s a good way of reading body language."

Less „dangerous“ (for the low blood pressure folks in here) version: pinch your nose shut and hold your breath for as long as you can. Then let go of the nostrils and slowly(!) breathe in. The nose unclogs and stays free for a while. Coming from someone with a weird allergy that causes a constantly runny and often stuffed nose, so I promise it works :)

Your legs will move as fast as your arms. If you're walking and want to speed up, start swinging your arms just a little faster. Your legs will start moving faster without you telling them to. If you're tired and feel like you can't go faster, try the arm trick and be amazed.

Or try powerwalking: bend your elbows 90º as if you were running, that makes it easier to swing your arms from side to side and will also make you walk faster. Like Nordic Walking, but without the walking sticks.

The real reason for Kirk Gibson's ironic home-run trot. (Kirk Gibson won Game One the 1988 [baseball] World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers by hitting a clutch home run despite a badly injured leg. His celebration as he rounded the bases amounted to little more than a fist pump, because he was working so hard at running on his bad leg.)

Yeah, there are lots of people who barely drink any water, and sometimes they need a reminder. And then there are many people who drink other, unhealthy things almost exclusively and avoid water.

An easy way to quell the gag reflex at the dentist during x-rays is to sprinkle a little salt on your tongue. Not sure how it works, but it does. I bring a mini salt shaker with me.

Evolutionarily, going into new environments was risky for our ancestors because we couldn't be sure that they were safe, so we needed our full attention to assess for any possible dangers. We retain the side-effect of that which clears our minds when we pass through thresholds, including our memory of what why we were going there in the first place. Looking side to side tricks our subconscious into thinking we have assessed for danger, and allows our brains to refocus and often remember what was forgotten for safety reasons.

A lot of fad diets, pills, "cleanses," etc, will shed "water weight" first, making one look more slim and trim. Maintaining proper hydration while actively taking steps to shed excess pounds will generally increase the conversion rate compared to someone that's dehydrated.

It depends on the muscle cramping. The idea is to stretch that muscle, so toe not always the best choice. Regardless, stretch it.

I think they've just used the wrong word; what actually works is pulling your toes towards you while pushing your heel away, because it stretches the calf muscle and like you said, it's stretching the muscle that's needed.

I hate when I sleep in some one else’s house because most people have blackout curtains. An entire wall of my room is a window with a glass canopy (I don’t know how to describe it properly) and I only have a veil curtain. So I always wake up with natural daylight. I feel so confused when I wake up in complete darkness.

I had a sunrise alarm clock yrs ago. Best thing ever. It lit gradually and birds chirping sounds got louder gradually. It was so nice. But it quit working. :( I bought a new one recently but it's awful. Light just pops on and the bird noises are loud jungle birds or something. Not nice at all.

“If You Have A Leg Cramp, Pull Back Your Big Toe”: 40 Human Body Cheat Codes That You Might Not Have Known You Needed Push yourself to do something good for yourself even if you dont want to (something like diet or exercise) and stick to it. Doing it once or twice you wont want to do it again because your body is still adapting. But after a while it will become a habit. I went on a bike ride every day during my summer break and when winter rolled around I started to realise that I relied on that ride as much as eating. I got really jittery if I didn't ride that day.

It depends. I started walking every day for the exercise and I hated it. Booooring. But it was the easiest, available exercise so I did it. Over time I started to notice things in the neighborhood, and see various wildlife every day, and started looking forward to it. Now I don't feel quite right when I miss it.

I recommend having a dog, if possible a bigger dog (for safety reason). One walk (jogging is better) mornings, at noon, before sleep - it is healthy and fine, after some time a must. And the world is better, maybe you will have now friends, maybe new love. Lot of possibilities.

That's great advice if your brain allows for consistency. However, basically saying that to improve yourself you have to be consistent or there's no need in bothering, can make those of us with ADHD (and others with situations that make consistency difficult) feel like failures when we can't make a habit stick like everyone else seems to be able to. It can make us feel even more broken and hopeless and our daily struggles invalidated. I'm glad it works for some people, but if your brain works differently, this advice isn't for you. The modified advice is to make improved choices when you can and be proud of yourself in the moment for it, not qualifying or diminishing the results based on whether or not you can continue the same effort in the long term. Sporadic chaotic improvement, is still improvement and worth celebrating.

I have these a lot, and I've never heard this. But since I can't reach that spot easily, I doubt I'll test it. However, it is worth saying that there is a specific spot with a type of fat right there, which doesn't exist anywhere else on your body. Lower the temperature there and your body burns extra calories compensating for it. So that's a cool area (see what I did there?)

Make a habit of always doing some exercise while you're at something casual. Sorry about my english, but to make an example: You go in through a specific door or hallway, and then you just start doing random jumper jacks in a specific amount. After some time, your brain will turn that into a habit, so that it becomes routine, and it'll keep you exercised.

“If You Have A Leg Cramp, Pull Back Your Big Toe”: 40 Human Body Cheat Codes That You Might Not Have Known You Needed If you wake up with your arm asleep because you were laying on it, the fastest way to make it "wake up" is to stick your arm straight up in the air and let the blood drain back down. Then lay your arm flat and allow blood flow to resume normally. For people that get stuffy noses- pick a nostril you want to have clear. I tend to prefer my right nostril but it works both ways. Pick the side you want clear and lay on your side so that nostril is on top. Prop your head up on your hand so your head is resting at around a 45 degree angle relative to the surface you are laying on. This should clear the nostril on top pretty quickly. If not, try tilting your head at different angles until it does. This doesn't always work, but for me it usually does.

The congestion in your sinuses goes to the other side. If you turn to your other side the congestion will move again to the lowest point. You can breathe better out of the top nostril.

You can increase the rate at which you learn by having shorter study sessions of the same about of time as before that are broken up by doing something that is stress reliving. Like a 20 minute walk in a park or a coffee break after every 1 hour long study session.

This is why I can't believe the horribly sadistic school scheduling technique of "block scheduling." We aren't built to study one subject for so long! (Actually, a 40 minute class should be broken up into 2 fifteen-minute stretches, with "shifting gears" between them, and a brief time before and after for collecting or giving assignments, announcements, etc.)

    Michael Largey

Very true, especially for the subject I taught - math. The purpose of block scheduling is not to improve education - it's to save money, principally on teacher salaries. At our school many teachers taught a sixth class and so were paid 20% more. This would have disappeared under a block schedule. Our administration wanted to look at it and asked the department heads to choose a committee. We chose only teachers who would lose income with a block schedule. Since nobody on the staff wanted block scheduling, we were all pleased with the committee's decision.

I take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds and exhale slowly through my nose. But of course it depends on the situation. Last time I almost had a panic attack I was in the middle of an important cleaning spree on a short notice but I felt stuck with every single task. I did the easiest tasks on my to-do list to see that I was in fact able to do it, that I made progress and it wasn't as stressful as I thought it would be. Helped so much.

Mine said this is called the dive reflex and is very good for dead stopping an anxiety attack before it starts without resorting to medication. It worked well for me. I'd start to feel the little niggle of panic and hop in a very cool shower and let the water hit my face. Boom better.

If you're feeling faint, dizzy, heart pounding dip your wrists in cold water. Or put an ice pack on your wrists and back of neck. It it will calm you down within 5-10mins.

My husband does this!!! I'd never heard of it until meeting him. It's the funniest thing to watch. He doesn't care WHERE he is. If he gets the hiccups he'll get himself a glass of water and flip himself right over. The looks he's gotten lol but it's never failed him! Me, I just hold my breath for 15-20 seconds then swallow a few times. I don't get the crazy looks from people. ;)

This isn't 100% correct, hiccups can occur due to stress etc but the majority happen due to an irritation of the vagus nerves. Mind over matter has no business in this case.

All of those may work. My go-to is take the deepest breath you can and hold as long as possible. My theory is if the lungs are full, you cannot hiccup more air in, and if you miss at least two in the cycle, it seems to break it.

I tend to agree. I think most hiccup cures "work" because of some common factor. Maybe it's because it forces us to take calmer breaths and slow down. Maybe it's that we spend the time "solving" the hiccups, that when they go away naturally we attribute their resolution to the "cure". I just know the only thing that works consistently for me is slowing my breathing and waiting them out. Given that my child can trigger hiccups on command by getting overly excited and not taking full breaths over a short period of time (laughing too hard, bouncing off the walls during the pre-bedtime zoomies). So my "anti hiccup trick" is to tell her to sit down, take slow breaths, and drink a little water for a few minutes. She calms her system and her breathing, the hiccups stop after a bit. If she keeps running around, it gets worse until she eventually throws up. Physiological.

There are two conflicting facts and one thing that most people don't talk about directly that lead to unsuccessful diets: 1) As many people say, calories in < calories out will make you lose weight, however: 2) Most people don't feel "full" (aka: lose the food-craving of hunger) because they've eaten enough calories, but because they've eaten enough volume to fill their stomachs (there's a bit more to it, but this is basically true). Some really simple things help to fix this: 1) Eat beans and lentils as a main portion of your diet. They are really filling, really high-protein, and have other good things in them. They are also relatively low-calorie; I've eaten so many beans over a week, and still lost weight. 2) Eat slowly and talk during your meal, as in, between bites of food; it takes some time for food to hit your stomach, and everyone knows that feeling of "I shouldn't have had that much" from time to time. Give your stomach some time to send the "I'm not hungry anymore, please stop sending in food, kthx" signal to the brain. 3) Forget everything you've ever been told about "clearing your plate". No matter what you do, the extra half a meal on your plate is never going to be able to get to the starving kids around the world. Donate to some charities if that's a thing that you actually want to help solve, but shoving down food that you aren't hungry for is just going to contribute to weight gain. If there's enough left for another potential meal when you're hungry, just wrap it up and save it for leftovers. If there isn't, just trash it. 4) If you're over 30, try eating foods you didn't like again. I have a newfound love for raw spinach since I've turned 30, when I hated it as a teen and even into my 20s. Your taste buds change as you age, and you might enjoy healthy foods more than you think. 5) Cut out sodas. This gets said a lot, but it's true. If your lunch is a turkey club sandwich, a 20 oz bottle of soda is adding 33-50% more calories to that meal. They are a relative *ton* of calories that don't make you feel more full or quench your thirst at all.

Especially when you can't trust food labeling, it's expensive and difficult to get food without added ingredients that are largely underregulated (how are Skittles still allowed?). Government (US) sponsored health advice is also questionable because they do allow food companies to add a lot of unhealthy things that other countries don't and their food advice changes based on their goals (referencing their change of government sponsored nutritional advice to push for eating certain foods to help war efforts in the 1900s and the promotion of sponsored food industries.) How are we supposed to "eat healthy" when much of the food decisions we make are based on incorrect or incomplete information? (2/3)

For #5- don't suddenly cut out soda. Our bodies love sugar so it will make you REALLY want soda again, so it's better to start drinking less soda over time. Same with anything really, it's hard to completely cut something out of your diet all of a sudden. I say this as general advice and it might be different for some people.

You can go cold turkey on sugar quite easily as long as you cut all sugar at once (not just soda), also all candy, cookies, juices (fresh or packaged "no sugar added" still has tons of sugar in it), canned or packaged sauces, soups, anything. In less than 5 days the cravings are gone. Those 5 days and the first 3 in particular those cravings can be pretty strong. Afterwards you may feel like the things that contain sugar, but not for the sugar itself. When you do eat something with sugar again after months, you'll have a giant sugar rush (which can be kind of nice), quiting sugar after a single thing again is relatively easy.

Re #1: That’s not always the case. Metabolism is key. If you’re starving yourself and exercising til you drop, yet still can’t lose weight, then get your thyroid checked—-go to a hormone specialist who does not rely on the worthless TSH test. Make sure they do the full set, including all your T3s. The T3 in your thyroid is the metabolism driver. If it’s low, you’re not burning calories at a normal rate, and you need to supplement it to raise it. Watch out for synthetic T4-only meds. If your body does not convert T4 to T3, you will only get worse. Best idea is to start with both T4 and T3—they do make both. Synthroid is brand name of the synthetic T4-only med aka levothyroxine, and Cytomel is the T3-only med brand name aka liothyronine. There are cheaper generics you can get that are just as good. I know all this because it was my experience. My metabolism is now normal with the addition of the meds.

This is a good example of how a little information can sometimes be worse than no information at all. Body language must be read in 'context and clusters' to provide any useful information. The simple act of pointing one's feet in a particular direction means nothing on its own. :)

I agree. It basically assumes the only factor involved is me pointing my body towards the person I want to talk to. CAN be true but also true - depends on the angle of the chair, if my back is aching so I'm twisting one way or the other to reduce the pain, am I also trying to keep an eye on something else in the area like a pet or small child or the BBQ. Stuff like that.

This is undeniably good in situations where a woman is attempting to buy something that requires negotiation, such as a vehicle. If a man and woman are together, and the woman is doing the buying, but the salesman isn't really "there" yet into the process , a peek at the shoes will tell whether or not he is taking her seriously. Not all that long ago, only a few years, I broke off negotiation with a salesman and went to the receptionist, asking if I could buy the car from them and they get the same sales commission. The reply, " ma'am,I can sell you anything on the lot if you so desire, if you only let the manager know." So I did, made my final offer, drive home in my new car. I checked with receptionist later and was informed they did indeed get the commission, their very first one!

Not true. A single act of body language means nothing without being accompanied by other postures, gestures, or movements to corroborate the initial supposition.

Oh, the general direction someone is facing means they want to talk to them who knew? The problem with this is polite people generally face the person that is talking to them even if they don't want to talk to them. Like their feet are subconsciously tracking the person they really want to talk to like radar or is the kind of group where no one moves.

When you are very tired and you feel you could sleep for 10 hours, taking a short nap ( like 20 minutes) might actually help, instead of sleeping for longer. You feel energized enough to keep going if you have something important and immediate to do.

Resetting your sleep schedule -- just fast for a few hours before the time you want to go to sleep. You'll wake up hungry as if it's morning.

No, YOU might be able to do that, but it won't work for everybody / most people. I know I wake up in the night if I'm hungry, for example, and then ruin my night's sleep. Sleep is the area where everyone likes to dispense all the advice, but it's the least transferable, most individual thing.

It's not even consistent in the same person. Sometimes I take my medicine early in the morning so I can sleep at night and my mind races. Sometimes I take it late and I don't get sleepy. Sometimes melatonin works. Sometimes it works so well I wake up at 3am rested. Sometimes a hot tea before bed helps. Sometimes I get heartburn. There are so many stinking factors with sleep, maybe have a comprehensive list of all the things that work for anyone and we can all just go down the list until we find what works, but generalizing advice about sleep is useless.

Insomniac and sleep shifter here - nahhhhhh lol. I just have to listen to my body. I'm currently on a half night/half day schedule. Sometimes I'm awake all night and go to sleep at 6 am, sometimes I sleep and wake up at 6 am. Being neurodivergent sucks sometimes.

I have a better solution to that! If your sleeping schedule is out of whack, just move timezones! Like, you live in Europe and you're used to be going to sleep at 6am in the morning and sleeping till 2 in the afternoon? Easy! Move to the Americas! :p (obvs a joke)

I guess this works for some people, but I don't wake up hungry. I usually have a big lunch, and maybe a snack after work, but I don't wake up hungry. Most days I only eat one meal a day, and it's lunch. I might have some radishes in the morning for breakfast *if* I feel hungry, but usually I only have one meal a day.

If you really want to reset your sleep schedule go camping for 2-3 days. It only works if you want rest your schedule back to a "normal " sleep schedule of awake with the sun sleep through the night. It will get you back to your normal circadian rhythm at least.

STRENGTH TRAINING. The author is saying that having muscle mass prevents certain diseases. Breast cancer included. They're not saying hey you'll feel better if you exercise, they're specifically saying strength training. Not a lot of women are cool lifting heavy, they just hop on the elliptical and call it a day.

If that's true about breast cancer and muscle mass, then cool. But that's not at all what they said. They said strength training helps with heart health and reduces diabetes, both of which are a big fat "duh".

Stolen from Joe rogan podcast, but hanging can alleviate all sorts of upper body aches. As in grab something and hang like your doing monkey bars. I used to always have a slight ache and pain in my left shoulder after any lifting, that day and the days following. Started to hang for 15 second intervals 5 or 6 times post workout and the days after and boom the aches disappeared.

DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE ANY NECK, SHOULDER, OR UPPER/LOWER BACK PROBLEMS! It can make common conditions chronic, and accelerate any chronic conditions. If you have any type of muscle, joint or bone problems (arthritis, degenerative disc, spinal stenosis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, hernia, bulging disc's, nerve damage of any kind, neuropathy - you get the idea), please consult with your particular specialists (orthopedics, rheumatologist, chiropractors, etc) first. I have most of these and get warned constantly not to do anything that could further damage me, resulting in surgeries and using a wheelchair much sooner than I'd like. However, if you're healthy, I'd try it! Seems a simple thing to relieve aches & pains

Or alternatively, drink as much water as alcohol during your boozing session. Sure it'll make you wanna pee a lot, especially after the flood gates are opened for the first time, but it helps a lot to not get drunk, and not get dehydrated which is the main cause of a hangover ;)

If I had taken better care when I was younger, it wouldn't be so bad. Always had dry skin, now it's positively parched! I use face products with high spf and am finally moisturizing every day.

Eating veggies and fruits, and getting a good night's sleep will give you more energy than you get from caffeine, everyday. Also, caffeine gives you a boost but if you use it everyday it just gets you back to "normal", so save the coffee for days you really need a boost.

If you feel at all off, emotionally, drink a large glass of water, whether you're anxious, angry, or sad. That doesn't always fix it, but sometimes it does, and if it didn't, at least you're a little more hydrated. When you wake up in the morning, drink a large glass of water before anything else. To drink a lot of water is habit, not so good one. Animals don´t it , our ancestors don´t it too. Why we? It only do our kidneys work more.

After you take a hot shower, gradually turn the water temp to cold before getting out. It helps close the pores so your skin isn't as itchy when you get out

Basically the Keto diet feels like a cheat code to losing weight while eating good food and never feeling hungry. There's some sort of anti-cheat measures in the "Keto flu" for the first few days and relatives always shoving cake and ice cream in your face, though.

My doctor recommended a Keto diet because the sugar level in my blood was too high. After four months my sugar level had dropped to nearly normal, and I've lost 20 pounds. There are lots of low-carb and n0-sugar foods and ingredients out there. But there is no substitute for pasta.

Good work - you were probably in the pre diabetic stage and now you took action and prevented it. Not many people do take personal responsibility for their health to reverse conditions. My husband didn’t.

Nah. I didn't lose any weight on three weeks of keto (despite being in ketoacidosis) and I was just pîssed off. I'm not that into eggs or ultra fatty food, I'd rather solely eat a single slice of bread and butter a day than eat endless variations on omelettes and that disgusting "coffee with added butter" crud. Such a disappointment.

Keto…. When the body goes into ketosis from complete fasting after 36-48 hrs. No “keto” diet includes 48 hr fasts. This is called the Atkins diet. The founder died youngish from a heart attack reasonably brought on from a lifelong high protein/fat diet. Eat all kinds of foods in moderation folks, get some exercise and drink water when you are thirsty. Extreme behaviors of any type lead to extreme outcomes. Is this not obvious?

"Feels like"? Well you may feel like it is, but in general it's no more effective than any other fad diet, i.e. not really at all, in and of itself.

This is one of those "super easy to say but not so easy to do" generalisations. If you already have a physical issue, which makes it difficult to get some sort of exercise, then the generalisation makes you feel like rubbish. If you are struggling to make ends meet, you eat what you can afford, when you can afford it. At the present, the cost of healthier food items (even basic ones) is really difficult for some. So ummmm yeah. Easier said than done.

Agreed! I'm too poor to eat more healthy more often. It's not that I don't want it, I just literally can't afford it. And I have issues that make exercising difficult and painful for me.

KW, autoimmune buddy here. Have you had your food sensitivities checked? Not by the mail in kind, but at a Dr.s office. It made all the difference in the world for me. Granted it was depressing seeing the foods I wouldn’t be eating anymore…until I felt how amazing I felt! If I have anything on the list now that I’ve cut them out completely, I know right away! I get my lupus rash across my face quicker than swallowing another bite and the next day(s) I am in so much pain. So many “healthy” foods aren’t healthy for me. Try this and follow AIP for a minimum of 30 days and you’ll be on your way to feeling so much better. *edit for fat finger text correction. :)

I used to take about 3 Ibuprophen when having a panic attack that lasted more than a couple minutes (they were seriously severe, sometimes lasting hours, and often wound me up in the ER). Ibuprophen relaxes your muscles within about 15 minutes, and once your muscles start to relax, your mind can kind of start to calm down a bit, and you can then gain control. Just be careful to not take more than 4 at the most, or you can cause problems with your liver. Also, a good way to stop being dizzy, or to cure a mild headache-- shut your eyes very tightly, then open them really wide while looking down to your left. Don't move your whole head, JUST your eyes. Shut them again very tightly, then open again very wide, while looking down to your right. Repeat this again, while looking up to your left. Then again, looking up to your right. Then do this again, while looking up like you're trying to see your eyebrows. Again, it's important to keep your head still, and only do this while moving just your eyes. Helps me almost every time.

Nurse here. There are so many incorrect things in this post. First, ibuprofen helps with inflammation. It is not a muscle relaxer. Second, you can safely take 4 tabs (to equal 800mg). You should always eat something when taking ibuprofen. Taking it on an empty stomach can lead to ulcers and GI bleeds. Third, ibuprofen affects your kidneys, not your liver. That’s Tylenol. 🙄

I would take a guess that the OP is feeling a placebo effect from the Ibuprofen. Plus it gives them a semblance of control that they are doing something when they feel so out of control when having a severe panic attack. Maybe they could try to switch to taking 3 of something of a similar size as ibuprofen when they have a panic attack. Maybe a mint or something that would have a strong flavor that would distract them. This could mimic the original motion and also give the body something else to focus on.

I seriously do NOT recommend the Ibuprofen 'hack'. Taking NSAIDS on a regular basis can be dangerous and cause stomach issues and other issues in years to come!

Ibuprofen affects the kidneys, not the liver. I wonder if OP is experiencing placebo effect, ibuprofen is not a muscle relaxer, it is an anti-inflammatory. But I'm glad it works for them!

No no no no no no no to everything OP suggests. If you are doing this because you can’t afford prescription medication, don’t. Instead learn breathing techniques free on YouTube, put on a short meditation, have a green tea (engages your brain in making it and the l-Theanine will help too), go for a short walk. And if you are able to, speak to your doctor for some actually effective medication.

My partner destroyed his liver years ago because he used to take Tylenol all the time because of constant headaches. It turned out that his headaches were a result of him needing glasses, but by the point he realized, his liver was wrecked for nothing. Don't abuse medication. Just because something is over-the-counter, it doesn't make it safe to take like it's candy. Please only take medication when you really have to and you either actually know what you're doing and you understand how your medication works, or if you have doctor's instructions.

If you have severe anxiety, it’s always best to refer to a psychiatrist. That said, I was told that Benadryl is a better otc for an alternative to anxiety medication. I take hydroxyzine for panic attacks, but from a prescriber. Hydroxyzine is also used for allergies and has much of the same chemical makeup as Benadryl. For Americans, I know prescriptions and psychiatric help can be too expensive. I still recommend seeing a psychiatrist, if you can.
