“If You Have A Leg Cramp, Pull Back Your Big Toe”: 40 Human Body Cheat Codes That You Might Not Have Known You Needed
InterviewConsidering the fact that we have to exist in the same vessels for our entire lives, it's interesting how little most of us actually know about the human body. Why am I always getting hiccups, and how the heck do I eliminate them? Why does my leg fall asleep every time I lay on my side? Even if you hit the gym every day and are in excellent shape, you can likely still benefit from learning more about that complex body you’re in.
So below, we’ve gathered some of the most useful “human body cheat codes” Redditors have shared to help you pandas get the most out of that mysterious body of yours. Keep reading to also find an interview with the curious Redditor who started this conversation, and be sure to upvote the hacks you plan to utilize in your own life!

I have fairly low blood pressure and I often get dizzy if I get up too abruptly. If it happens, clench your abdominal muscles to force blood back upwards and it goes away immediately.
I'm already up and about but will try tomorrow.... I have low blood pressure and when I want to get up the room becomes a merry-go-round..EDIT: yup, it works (and good morning)
Load More Replies...One of the things they tell you to do when you give blood. Yes it true about the bum clenching
Yes! I think you cou can also tighten the muscles in your arm that you're not using to give blood. You can alternate between clenching and relaxing, I think 10-30 seconds each.
Load More Replies...Also works for blue balls. Can't understand why they don't teach this in s*x ed.
If you get this after a meal - drink some water - stomach etc. draws water to digest food. Lowers blood volume hence lower blood pressure maybe even shock. Used to get REALLY sleepy after lunch, found out and extra 8-12 oz of water fixed it. Discovered all this when reading "History of US Army Medical Corps" and a book desert survival. During WW2 plasma kept wounded from going into shock (sleepy being a mild form of shock) from low blood volume & if lost in desert don't eat food if no water.
I have low blood pressure disease and it gets too low too fast for this, but I bet it would help for regular folks
To learn more about what inspired this fascinating thread to start in the first place, we reached out to Alex Clark, the Redditor who posed the question, "What's the best human body cheat code you know?" And he was kind enough to have a chat with us.
"I started this conversation after following AskReddit for a short while," Alex told Bored Panda. "I wanted to test different ways of sparking a conversation and luckily for me, there were others who were keen to answer my question!"
If you don't have your glasses and need to read or see something far away, make an "OK" sign with your hand but with the hole made with your thumb and forefinger as small as possible. If you look through the tiny hole, you'll be able to see much clearer.
It's the same principle as in cameras when you use a large f-stop. The aperture is small and just letting in a little light.
Load More Replies...Mine’s -7.5 and it worked for me! The hole has to be TINY, though.
Load More Replies...I wanted to say this was bull s**t then I took my glasses off & god damn, it’s true.🤯
Here's a long answer on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/1n1yk4/comment/ccevcku/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
Load More Replies...Also, if you get a piece of paper and make a pin hole in it you can do the same. Just adjust with the distance from your eye and hole size.as needed.
Learned this from Wilson Wilson watching Home Improvement a long time ago.
Load More Replies...Try again, trial and error until you find the sweet spot.
Load More Replies...Stretch every day. 90% of the problems that people get later in life, whether it is muscle related or not, usually stems from muscles being too tight & pulling where/when they should not.
I've been a casino cocktail waitress for two decades and it's an incredibly physically demanding job. I've also been doing Pilates and yoga since I was 16, and I never ever ever hurt my back. All the bending, lifting, walking, reaching and pulling that I do and I've never blown my back out because I keep my core muscles strong. Also, you have way more powerful orgasms when you have strong core muscles so just trust me, do the Pilates.
Stretch your back BEFORE you get out of bed, while you're still warm under covers. Just take 3 to 5 minutes and hug your knees to your chest, roll your hips to the side, etc. I haven't pulled a muscle in my back once since I started doing this every morning, and (before I started) I would tweak my back a few times per year from something as mundane as tying my shoe or sneezing wrong lol. Trust me, this works 👍👍
Got macular degeneration? Should have stretched daily!
Load More Replies...Absolutely. Until last year, I worked at my friend's ranch. Age 72. Wrangled horses, hoisted 50-pound bags of feed over my shoulder and walked across field, tilled garden space by hand, climbed trees, cleared creeks. Then she passed away and farm sold. Can verify without that stretching and physical activity, I went from feeling 20 to feeling 120 :snap: that fast.
Exercise is also part of this. Sometimes muscle imbalances happen because the muscle on one side is stronger than the muscle on the other side of the joint. So focus on strengthening the joints instead of just exercising to lose weight and you'll probably have less joint pain.
We were also curious about the best "human body cheat codes" Alex knows. "This seems like an obvious one, but drinking water when you wake up is a must," he shared. "It’s such a simple ‘hack’, but is an amazing habit to build into your daily routine."
"Another one, which is kind of cheating as it’s my own comment, but when people are together in a group, look at the direction of people's feet to see who they are interested in talking to," Alex added. "It’s not always the case, but it’s a good way of reading body language."
Sick with clogged sinuses?
Put your head between your legs while standing for 10 seconds, and then shoot back to a upright position and blow your nose, you'll be able to breath for a few minutes.
I call it the "Bend and Snot"
Less „dangerous“ (for the low blood pressure folks in here) version: pinch your nose shut and hold your breath for as long as you can. Then let go of the nostrils and slowly(!) breathe in. The nose unclogs and stays free for a while. Coming from someone with a weird allergy that causes a constantly runny and often stuffed nose, so I promise it works :)
My head doesn't reach, and if I try to shoot back up, gonna end up on my tuchus.
They should begin with 'practice yoga for 10 years then'...
Load More Replies...If I was in shape enough to do this, I wouldn't be worried about my sinuses.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! STOP! HAHAHAHAH! You think I can stand and then put my head between my legs. You are hilarious. I could do that in the 70s but these days I'm happy if i can just manage to pick something up off the floor. (Watches something fall - thinks - I'll get that next time I'm down there at floor level)
I don't think I could clench my abs or glutes quickly enough to keep from passing out, so I'll just keep sniffing the Vicks VapoRub I carry with me.
Your legs will move as fast as your arms. If you're walking and want to speed up, start swinging your arms just a little faster. Your legs will start moving faster without you telling them to. If you're tired and feel like you can't go faster, try the arm trick and be amazed.
Or try powerwalking: bend your elbows 90º as if you were running, that makes it easier to swing your arms from side to side and will also make you walk faster. Like Nordic Walking, but without the walking sticks.
The real reason for Kirk Gibson's ironic home-run trot. (Kirk Gibson won Game One the 1988 [baseball] World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers by hitting a clutch home run despite a badly injured leg. His celebration as he rounded the bases amounted to little more than a fist pump, because he was working so hard at running on his bad leg.)
I do this with my arms when I'm out running and struggling to get up an incline. You don't have to run any faster but if you pump your arms, it makes getting up the incline easier.
"One of my other favorite hacks is if you have a sneeze that's on the edge but needs that extra push to get it to go, look into a bright light, which is called the Photic Sneeze Reflex," Alex went on to note. "What’s interesting is the trait is genetic, so if you have it - one or both of your parents have it too!"
Finally, we asked Alex if he thinks it's wise for all of us to have some of these hacks up our sleeves. "I think it’s a great idea to learn some cheat codes - we all have the same human body, and it’s incredible that there’s still so much we don’t know about it!" he told Bored Panda.
Take an espresso right before a power nap. The caffeine will kick in about 20 minutes later and make you feel more energised after waking.
That's actually a really good idea. If I nap, I wake up really groggy and feel like my brain is full of cobwebs
That's due to sleeping too much and too little. According to our sleep cycle, we either need to nap 30 minutes and below or 3 hours or more. If you do a time in between, you are likely tk wake up feeling groggy
Load More Replies...Just drink a large glass of water and your bladder will wake you up if you're over 40.
I can drink coffee all the time but it doesn't wake me up. Only effect is, I have to go to the toilet more often
I drank so much coffee in one job that I became caffeine sensitive. Now just makes me feel weak and wobbly.
Load More Replies...The road safety association here in Ireland regularly have this as a TV ad, especially during bank holiday weekends. People tend to drive for longer during these periods so they suggest pulling into a service station, having a coffee and set an alarm for 20 minutes and going to sleep.
If i drink coffee, coke or a strong tea, the coffein kicks in in 2 minutes, not in 20.
The caffeine trick never works for me. I found it's all timing for me. If I set a timer for 20 minutes, I'll be asleep in 5 and sleep a hard 15. I wake up wide awake. Never more than 20 minutes for the timer. Anything more than 20 and I need at least 3 more hours.
If you're hungry, drink some water, you might not actually be hungry.
Mmm yes, that's a great way to develop an eating disorder. I know from experience.
Really ? Hunger pangs and feeling thirsty are two entirely different things, you can't tell the difference? I can.
Yeah I've never understood this either. Thirst is not a feeling you feel in your stomach, it's a feeling in your mouth and throat. This "advice" always sounded like something from an ED forum that got absorbed into the general sphere of knowledge and continues to be repeated like it's true
Load More Replies...This is true. If you're still hungry, then eat, but this is a good trick to keep from overeating.
That doesn't work. If I am hungry and drink more than 2,3 sips of water I feel terrible. Also why wouldn't you know whether you're actually hungry or not?
Or turns out you were hungry and now you’re gonna vomit the water.
Drink enough water - keeping hydrated helps so much.
Oh wow, really? Is the next hack gonna remind me that breathing is important too?
Funnily enough a lot of people don't breath well and it has health impacts. There's such a thing as a breathing physiotherapist and they can help a lot.
Load More Replies...I drank vodka daily for around 5 years. Became very sick. I also had the onset of fatty liver disease. I quit drinking there and then. Replaced vodka for water. It took a while but now,4 years on I feel so much better. My skin looks a lot better also.
According to New Scientist, that stuff about drink 50 litres or whatever a day is bs. The rule is - are you ready for this? - drink when you're thirsty. Your body knows when it needs hydration - that's what thirst is for!
According to Scottish NHS thirst means that you're already dehydrated: "Thirst is normally just the brain's way of warning that you're dehydrated because you're not drinking enough fluid." - https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/nutritional/thirst
Load More Replies...my DIL has a tendency not to drink enough water and got this same warning from doctor
Load More Replies...Yeah, there are lots of people who barely drink any water, and sometimes they need a reminder. And then there are many people who drink other, unhealthy things almost exclusively and avoid water.
Load More Replies...In my 80 years I think it is a real b,,,,,,it, we don´t drink water during school hours, a little bit in work, not whole litres. It only for go to loo often and not so good for your nieres.
I try to drink as little water as possible, that way (when?) the zombie apocalypse comes, I'll be prepared. My body won't be shocked by lack of fluids giving me the advantage ;)
Clench your left fist to subdue your gag reflex. Helps me with brushing my tongue and others with other things.
Make sure the left hand is not holding anything.. uh... sensitive before clenching it. Or not. Whatever floats people's boats.
Load More Replies...haha my first thought was honestly "oh this could be useful for when my siblings make me watch medical shows with them, those always make me feel kinda sick"
Load More Replies...An easy way to quell the gag reflex at the dentist during x-rays is to sprinkle a little salt on your tongue. Not sure how it works, but it does. I bring a mini salt shaker with me.
Thanks. I was so embarrassed last dentist visit. The whole office could hear me gag/ retch.
Load More Replies...I can't. Broke radius & ulna last Nov. Now have hardware installed to put it back together, and my range of motion isn't close to Norman, still. Can you use right fist, I wonder?
What works best is to open your eyes wide. I'm a dentist and this never failed.
In the dentist chair, lift one arm and the opposite leg while getting x-rays to stifle gag reflex. Dentist told me this.
When you wake up, drink some water. It will help reduce drowsiness.
Lucky for me I'm old now (almost 60) and have to take my thyroid pill first thing when I wake up, so have a bottle next to the bed all the time. I knew getting old MUST have some benefits ;-)
I do that too. If I don't take it before I get up I will eat and forget all about the darn thing.
Load More Replies...Usually first thing I wanna do when I wake up is to make room in my bladder.
It works for me. I have my first/only cup of coffee mid-afternoon when I start to slump.
I've read you should wait an hour before having coffee in the morning to let your brain wake up, I can only wait 20 minutes max..
Load More Replies...Actually if you wake up about a half hour early, slam some water then drink some coffee in about a half hour the coffee hits you harder been doing this for a couple years game changer. I poop better too.
Load More Replies...It works for your bowels. If it works properly, you have no time for drowsiness.
If you enter a room and forget what you have to do, move your eyes sideways, it helps jog your memory.
I just leave then redo exactly what I was doing and thinking then boom I sometimes remember
Sometimes it helps to simply go back through /across the doorway / boundary. There's a psychological reason this happens, it's called the "doorway effect" or "location updating effect".
Load More Replies...Evolutionarily, going into new environments was risky for our ancestors because we couldn't be sure that they were safe, so we needed our full attention to assess for any possible dangers. We retain the side-effect of that which clears our minds when we pass through thresholds, including our memory of what why we were going there in the first place. Looking side to side tricks our subconscious into thinking we have assessed for danger, and allows our brains to refocus and often remember what was forgotten for safety reasons.
Or, wear a black leather jacket, and go back to that restaurant you were in when you told your fiance that your job is just as important as his and you don't see why you should have to move just because he got relocated.
How does it feel knowing that nobody talks about you?
Load More Replies...ME: 'Oh Well must not have been that important" : I go Do something else
Water. Drink water and drink a lot of it. Thirsty? Drink water. Hungry? Drink water. Headache? Drink water. Tired for no good reason? Drink water. Trying to lose weight over more than a few hours? Drink water.
Just don't overdo it to the point where you literally end up 'drowning' yourself!
A lot of fad diets, pills, "cleanses," etc, will shed "water weight" first, making one look more slim and trim. Maintaining proper hydration while actively taking steps to shed excess pounds will generally increase the conversion rate compared to someone that's dehydrated.

If you have a leg cramp - pull back your big toe and it will alleviate the cramp
A dancer once told me to stand about two feet from a wall, lean forward but hold your heel to the floor. It may take a minute or even a second try if the ramp recurs, but has never failed me in fifty years.
If you get a foot cramp, grab your toes and pull them towards you and hold. Works every time.
Works on leg cramps too; My midwife suggested it during my first pregnancy so I've been doing it for 50 years and it never fails So much better than bending them backwards🙄
Load More Replies...It depends on the muscle cramping. The idea is to stretch that muscle, so toe not always the best choice. Regardless, stretch it.
I think they've just used the wrong word; what actually works is pulling your toes towards you while pushing your heel away, because it stretches the calf muscle and like you said, it's stretching the muscle that's needed.
Load More Replies...Pickle juice or anything with a good balance of electrolytes works wonders.
Yeah, this works for bad stabbing-feeling charley horse cramps in your shins. It hurts like all getup for a few seconds then quickly relieves the pain.
Recently figured this out, I tend to get cramps in the bottom of my foot. Works for that too
That's old fashioned, what you need to do is put your foot under something heavy and try to lift it, this relaxes the opposing muscle in your calf.
If you have a sneeze that's on the edge but needs that extra push to get it to go, look into a bright light.
This only works for some people, and it's hereditary. If you can do it, one or both of your parents can do it too. Kind of like 'rolling' your tongue.
Later evidence overrules the idea that rolling the tongue is genetic. It is something that can be learned.
Load More Replies...This is called the Photic Sneeze Reflex. My dad has this and so do I. I sneeze uncontrollably when I step into the sun. (I say uncontrollably but I mean like 3 or 4 times in a row.)
Same, but 3 or 4 times if I'm lucky. More like 10 or 12. Annoys the hell out out of the wife, so, silver linings and all that.😁
Load More Replies...My mom sneezes 10 or more times each time she eats. Drives her nuts.
Or if you don’t want to sneeze (like you in a meeting or something) just use your tongue to rub the connective tissue between your upper lip and your two front teeth. Works every time!!!
I also find biting down hard on the back of my tongue helps!
Load More Replies...This doesn't work for everyone like Joe said... but hey, my husband has it lol. He looks into lights when he needs to sneeze
PSR (photic sneeze reflex) is what the condition is called that makes you sneeze when you look into bright lights
Whenever I have to sneeze, or cough for that matter, I find doing the first step of a Kegel is what matters most. Just hold tight until the eruption is over.
Yep this is true for certain people, used to watch my dad doing it by looking at the sun to make him sneeze then found out I was the same lol
Lift with your legs, not your back.
I find lifting with other people's arms works bester.
Load More Replies...I have bad knees, if I lift with my legs it's gonna hurt like hêll.
This is where there should be another body hack saying "get other people to lift things for you, you'll feel great"
Load More Replies...I hear this a lot, but what does it actually mean? How are there two different ways to lift stuff? Edit: thanks for all the replies pandas, TIL that I have been lifting stuff wrong my whole life.
Squat down to get whatever you are picking up. Keep your back straight and keep your load close to your body. Then stand up keeping your back straight.
Load More Replies...My back is fine but my knees are shot. My back will have to do it.
My thoughts exactly. I can't "hold items close to my body (center of gravity) and lift" because there's always a couple things in the way.
Load More Replies...How does that help you to get the groceries out of the car trunk? Bend my legs, can't reach.
Well this is meaningless unless you already know it! Lift by squatting and then straightening up your legs, rather than bending over and then trying to straighten your back.
Was told once that when you lift you should be able to see the ceiling: that way you are lifting properly.
Wake up with sunlight whenever possible. Your body automatically says "Oh! Sun! I should wake up now! It's morning!"
I hate when I sleep in some one else’s house because most people have blackout curtains. An entire wall of my room is a window with a glass canopy (I don’t know how to describe it properly) and I only have a veil curtain. So I always wake up with natural daylight. I feel so confused when I wake up in complete darkness.
I love sleeping in hotels because they have blackout curtains. At home we have only see through curtains and during summer with 22 h sunlight the sleep is short. on the other hand, it is sooo difficult to wake or get up in the winter mornings because it’s always dark.
Load More Replies...Black-out curtains and a Philips Wake-up Light improved my sleep beyond my wildest dreams 😉
I love the light but i want one that doesnt have the alarm bit. That way i can wake up but stay in bed reading BP.
Load More Replies...I lived in the Arctic and now I sleep better in sunlight than in darkness. Working a night shift sealed my doom. I've been stuck in a backwards sleep cycle for over a decade now and it stinks now that I'm retired
Morning was always best part of the day... no one had a chance to mess with me, no one barking orders. Life was like a fresh new canvas to paint... or splatter with hot coffee as I fell over the dogs toys.
Or when it's summer and starts getting light at 5am when you don't need to be awake.
Load More Replies...Don't really feel like waking up at 4:30 AM in summer and 8:30 AM in winter. Don't think my workplace would like it either.
I had a sunrise alarm clock yrs ago. Best thing ever. It lit gradually and birds chirping sounds got louder gradually. It was so nice. But it quit working. :( I bought a new one recently but it's awful. Light just pops on and the bird noises are loud jungle birds or something. Not nice at all.
Push yourself to do something good for yourself even if you dont want to (something like diet or exercise) and stick to it. Doing it once or twice you wont want to do it again because your body is still adapting. But after a while it will become a habit.
I went on a bike ride every day during my summer break and when winter rolled around I started to realise that I relied on that ride as much as eating. I got really jittery if I didn't ride that day.
Tired of all this repetition does the habit. You have to like what you do or what it does to you, otherwise you will hate it one month/year later like you did the first day
It depends. I started walking every day for the exercise and I hated it. Booooring. But it was the easiest, available exercise so I did it. Over time I started to notice things in the neighborhood, and see various wildlife every day, and started looking forward to it. Now I don't feel quite right when I miss it.
Load More Replies...I walk or hike every day with my dog. There's very little that stops me from getting out there: I'll walk in the rain, during a storm, while I'm sick...it helps keep me (and my pup) sane.
My dogs hate the rain. One absolutely refuses to go out in it unless desperate - though as he was a rescue found dumped in some woods I wonder if that has something to do with it.
Load More Replies...Sounds like you created a problem for yourself considering bike riding can only be done for part of the year.
I recommend having a dog, if possible a bigger dog (for safety reason). One walk (jogging is better) mornings, at noon, before sleep - it is healthy and fine, after some time a must. And the world is better, maybe you will have now friends, maybe new love. Lot of possibilities.
I get this one, I live in Florida, and you can swim 8 months out of the year. I like to swim laps using different forms for an hour a day after work. When it's too cold to swim, I'm not as happy. I might go for a walk, but after being on my feet all day, walking isn't fun. Swimming is always fun
Hi, my bipolar says eff you lol. I love how showering makes me feel. LOVE it, obviously, clean is great. But uh... I can barely force myself to every day. Yeah.
That's great advice if your brain allows for consistency. However, basically saying that to improve yourself you have to be consistent or there's no need in bothering, can make those of us with ADHD (and others with situations that make consistency difficult) feel like failures when we can't make a habit stick like everyone else seems to be able to. It can make us feel even more broken and hopeless and our daily struggles invalidated. I'm glad it works for some people, but if your brain works differently, this advice isn't for you. The modified advice is to make improved choices when you can and be proud of yourself in the moment for it, not qualifying or diminishing the results based on whether or not you can continue the same effort in the long term. Sporadic chaotic improvement, is still improvement and worth celebrating.
Take fiber before bedtime. I used to get really nervous when traveling and it upset my stomach. Getting "regular" calmed my body immensely.
Fsr bananas really calm me down and relieve nervousness before auditions and stuff
It’s actually better to take fiber in the morning when you’re up and moving around….it needs water and movement to get through your system best.
To quickly stop a nose bleed put something cold at the point where your neck meets your back. Haven't had a nose bleed last more than 5 minutes since learning that.
I've only had a nosebleed once in my life, and it was at school during choir. I almost didn't get permission to go to the bathroom, until I started bleeding all over the floor. It was very embarrassing and messy
Oh, fun /s 😬 Also, I think this might be the first time I've seen you break character (no judgement or anything, just a random observation)
Load More Replies...A nosebleed shouldn't last more than five minutes anyway, unless there's something else wrong with you. All this will do is tend to make you hold your head up, which is the normal advice given.
Contrary to popular belief, head down is better. Otherwise the blood will trickle down your throat and might make you nauseus
Load More Replies...I stopped getting nose bleeds when I started remembering to put the toilet seat down.
I have these a lot, and I've never heard this. But since I can't reach that spot easily, I doubt I'll test it. However, it is worth saying that there is a specific spot with a type of fat right there, which doesn't exist anywhere else on your body. Lower the temperature there and your body burns extra calories compensating for it. So that's a cool area (see what I did there?)
This is pretty simple. An old fashioned styptic pencil shoved up the bleeding nostril and held there for a few minutes.
I've never had a nose bleed. What causes them, besides being punched that is?
Nose bleeds shouldn't last more than 5 minutes, so check your blood pressure.
It sounds like the old thing of putting a key down your back. It works on some people because of the placebo effect; if you "know" it's going to work, it just might. I didn't find it helpful even as a child.
Load More Replies...Make a habit of always doing some exercise while you're at something casual. Sorry about my english, but to make an example: You go in through a specific door or hallway, and then you just start doing random jumper jacks in a specific amount. After some time, your brain will turn that into a habit, so that it becomes routine, and it'll keep you exercised.
I trained myself to do push ups every time I play a particular song. It feels a bit Pavlovian, but it works.
Works indeed. I started with 5 pushups everyday the moment I wake up and another 5 at work right before i eat lunch. Now i feel like a fraud if i leave my room without doing 30, and i wont touch lunch if I dont get in at least 20
Load More Replies...at my age if i go thru a door and start jumpin jackin people would call security..
Bonus, it will really freak out your houseguests. That said, I like dancing to music in the kitchen while I cook.
That's true. I don't do this with working out, but I have patterns linked with certain places in my house so I don't forget things (ADHD). Placing everything you need to perform a task within arms reach of where you do the task also helps tremendously.
Load More Replies...I had read that doing a set of 20 stairs 5 times 3 times a week would help prevent "old age" diabetes. I'm 60 & now up to 20 flights a day 5 days a week (and I can read my phone while I do it). It feels so good to have strength in your legs & helps even more as you to keep you from falling. I'm so glad since our cats like to trip us up.
If you wake up with your arm asleep because you were laying on it, the fastest way to make it "wake up" is to stick your arm straight up in the air and let the blood drain back down. Then lay your arm flat and allow blood flow to resume normally.
For people that get stuffy noses- pick a nostril you want to have clear. I tend to prefer my right nostril but it works both ways. Pick the side you want clear and lay on your side so that nostril is on top. Prop your head up on your hand so your head is resting at around a 45 degree angle relative to the surface you are laying on. This should clear the nostril on top pretty quickly. If not, try tilting your head at different angles until it does. This doesn't always work, but for me it usually does.
I think "choose a nostril" would have been a better way to word this advice!
Picking your nostril could help clear it too though.
Load More Replies...A limb "falling asleep" is not caused by blocked blood flow, but a pinched nerve.
Yes and no. Lack of blood flow can effect the nerves. I have permanent nerve damage due to lack of blood to my hands and feet.
Load More Replies...I like don’t turn in my sleep at all anymore and will wake up with half of my body asleep. Does anyone else have this?
The congestion in your sinuses goes to the other side. If you turn to your other side the congestion will move again to the lowest point. You can breathe better out of the top nostril.
I did this all night last night. Got tired of one being stuffy and flipped over for a bit of variety. I hate allergies.
Load More Replies...You can increase the rate at which you learn by having shorter study sessions of the same about of time as before that are broken up by doing something that is stress reliving. Like a 20 minute walk in a park or a coffee break after every 1 hour long study session.
Or use the Pomodoro Technique https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/definition/pomodoro-technique
I can't study knowing I'm on a timer. It stresses me out so much I don't actually absorb anything of what I'm reading because I'm constantly thinking of the alarm that can go off any moment :')
Load More Replies...This is why I can't believe the horribly sadistic school scheduling technique of "block scheduling." We aren't built to study one subject for so long! (Actually, a 40 minute class should be broken up into 2 fifteen-minute stretches, with "shifting gears" between them, and a brief time before and after for collecting or giving assignments, announcements, etc.)
Very true, especially for the subject I taught - math. The purpose of block scheduling is not to improve education - it's to save money, principally on teacher salaries. At our school many teachers taught a sixth class and so were paid 20% more. This would have disappeared under a block schedule. Our administration wanted to look at it and asked the department heads to choose a committee. We chose only teachers who would lose income with a block schedule. Since nobody on the staff wanted block scheduling, we were all pleased with the committee's decision.

If you're anxious, about the have a panic attack and you feel your heart rate go up splash some ice cold water on your neck, face, and wrists. This will slow your heart rate down a little.
I immediately turn on a fan pointed at me from close, apparently related to cooling off with water.
Yes, cool air always helps my panic attacks! I immediately try to find a fan or if it's winter, I step outside for a bit.
Load More Replies...I take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds and exhale slowly through my nose. But of course it depends on the situation. Last time I almost had a panic attack I was in the middle of an important cleaning spree on a short notice but I felt stuck with every single task. I did the easiest tasks on my to-do list to see that I was in fact able to do it, that I made progress and it wasn't as stressful as I thought it would be. Helped so much.
Or eating a slice of lemon (or anything really sour) helps too, same principle - you're distracting the fear response
Why do I just know this advice is going to end with some parent throwing cold water in their panicking child's face and telling them to calm down instead of getting them proper treatment for anxiety?
I have a unique heart rhythm and sometimes my heart believes I'm running away from something dangerous. My cardiologist said to cough really hard several times and it will straighten up the rhythm. I actually figured that out on my own.
Mine said this is called the dive reflex and is very good for dead stopping an anxiety attack before it starts without resorting to medication. It worked well for me. I'd start to feel the little niggle of panic and hop in a very cool shower and let the water hit my face. Boom better.

Hiccupping is largely psychosomatic and it can be cured by betting the person hiccupping a fiver he won't hiccup again. Works 80-90% of the time
Ahh you must drink water from a cup bent over / upside down. Works every single time
My husband does this!!! I'd never heard of it until meeting him. It's the funniest thing to watch. He doesn't care WHERE he is. If he gets the hiccups he'll get himself a glass of water and flip himself right over. The looks he's gotten lol but it's never failed him! Me, I just hold my breath for 15-20 seconds then swallow a few times. I don't get the crazy looks from people. ;)
Load More Replies...This isn't 100% correct, hiccups can occur due to stress etc but the majority happen due to an irritation of the vagus nerves. Mind over matter has no business in this case.
Lol, yeah me and my neuromuscular disability had a good laugh at this bit of advice. When my hiccups starts, there is no bet on earth that will make it stop. A muscle relaxant will though… and I’ll still take the fiver 😂
Load More Replies...All of those may work. My go-to is take the deepest breath you can and hold as long as possible. My theory is if the lungs are full, you cannot hiccup more air in, and if you miss at least two in the cycle, it seems to break it.
I do this and it works. If it doesn't work the first time, it might take a second or a third time, but it stops my hiccups and it has been the most effective thing.
Load More Replies...I tend to agree. I think most hiccup cures "work" because of some common factor. Maybe it's because it forces us to take calmer breaths and slow down. Maybe it's that we spend the time "solving" the hiccups, that when they go away naturally we attribute their resolution to the "cure". I just know the only thing that works consistently for me is slowing my breathing and waiting them out. Given that my child can trigger hiccups on command by getting overly excited and not taking full breaths over a short period of time (laughing too hard, bouncing off the walls during the pre-bedtime zoomies). So my "anti hiccup trick" is to tell her to sit down, take slow breaths, and drink a little water for a few minutes. She calms her system and her breathing, the hiccups stop after a bit. If she keeps running around, it gets worse until she eventually throws up. Physiological.
Load More Replies...My anti-hiccup trick: a teaspoon of table sugar. You put it in your mouth like you're about to eat it but use your tongue to rub it over your palate until it melts before you swallow it. I have no idea why it works but it works every time.
I do this, but with peanut butter. It has the same effect, but is better for your teeth. (Obviously not a good idea if you have a peanut allergy haha)

Weirdly, I always get hiccups at one particular place of work (I travel to different locations). I think it might be because it's particularly stressful!
I think hiccups largely has to do with your depth and pattern of breathing. So that tracks. If you're stressed, your breathing changes.

Because its not psychological it's caused by involuntary contractions of your diaphragm. The reason it works it because no one wants to lose £5 so they hold their breath and it tends to help the diaphragm contractions
Load More Replies...There are two conflicting facts and one thing that most people don't talk about directly that lead to unsuccessful diets: 1) As many people say, calories in < calories out will make you lose weight, however: 2) Most people don't feel "full" (aka: lose the food-craving of hunger) because they've eaten enough calories, but because they've eaten enough volume to fill their stomachs (there's a bit more to it, but this is basically true). Some really simple things help to fix this: 1) Eat beans and lentils as a main portion of your diet. They are really filling, really high-protein, and have other good things in them. They are also relatively low-calorie; I've eaten so many beans over a week, and still lost weight. 2) Eat slowly and talk during your meal, as in, between bites of food; it takes some time for food to hit your stomach, and everyone knows that feeling of "I shouldn't have had that much" from time to time. Give your stomach some time to send the "I'm not hungry anymore, please stop sending in food, kthx" signal to the brain. 3) Forget everything you've ever been told about "clearing your plate". No matter what you do, the extra half a meal on your plate is never going to be able to get to the starving kids around the world. Donate to some charities if that's a thing that you actually want to help solve, but shoving down food that you aren't hungry for is just going to contribute to weight gain. If there's enough left for another potential meal when you're hungry, just wrap it up and save it for leftovers. If there isn't, just trash it. 4) If you're over 30, try eating foods you didn't like again. I have a newfound love for raw spinach since I've turned 30, when I hated it as a teen and even into my 20s. Your taste buds change as you age, and you might enjoy healthy foods more than you think. 5) Cut out sodas. This gets said a lot, but it's true. If your lunch is a turkey club sandwich, a 20 oz bottle of soda is adding 33-50% more calories to that meal. They are a relative *ton* of calories that don't make you feel more full or quench your thirst at all.
About #1, um, neither beans nor lentils are a complete protein. You need to eat whole grains with your legumes in order to get all the amino acids.
That's a misconception that's been debunked for a long time. See, for example, https://www.forksoverknives.com/the-latest/the-myth-of-complementary-protein/ and https://www.ecowatch.com/hey-vegetarians-and-vegans-its-time-to-debunk-the-protein-combining-my-1891129518.html, among others.

#3 is a good tip. Eating food your body doesn't need is just as wasteful as throwing it in the trash.

(1/3)
Especially when you can't trust food labeling, it's expensive and difficult to get food without added ingredients that are largely underregulated (how are Skittles still allowed?). Government (US) sponsored health advice is also questionable because they do allow food companies to add a lot of unhealthy things that other countries don't and their food advice changes based on their goals (referencing their change of government sponsored nutritional advice to push for eating certain foods to help war efforts in the 1900s and the promotion of sponsored food industries.) How are we supposed to "eat healthy" when much of the food decisions we make are based on incorrect or incomplete information? (2/3)
Load More Replies...For #5- don't suddenly cut out soda. Our bodies love sugar so it will make you REALLY want soda again, so it's better to start drinking less soda over time. Same with anything really, it's hard to completely cut something out of your diet all of a sudden. I say this as general advice and it might be different for some people.
You can go cold turkey on sugar quite easily as long as you cut all sugar at once (not just soda), also all candy, cookies, juices (fresh or packaged "no sugar added" still has tons of sugar in it), canned or packaged sauces, soups, anything. In less than 5 days the cravings are gone. Those 5 days and the first 3 in particular those cravings can be pretty strong. Afterwards you may feel like the things that contain sugar, but not for the sugar itself. When you do eat something with sugar again after months, you'll have a giant sugar rush (which can be kind of nice), quiting sugar after a single thing again is relatively easy.
Load More Replies...Re #1: That’s not always the case. Metabolism is key. If you’re starving yourself and exercising til you drop, yet still can’t lose weight, then get your thyroid checked—-go to a hormone specialist who does not rely on the worthless TSH test. Make sure they do the full set, including all your T3s. The T3 in your thyroid is the metabolism driver. If it’s low, you’re not burning calories at a normal rate, and you need to supplement it to raise it. Watch out for synthetic T4-only meds. If your body does not convert T4 to T3, you will only get worse. Best idea is to start with both T4 and T3—they do make both. Synthroid is brand name of the synthetic T4-only med aka levothyroxine, and Cytomel is the T3-only med brand name aka liothyronine. There are cheaper generics you can get that are just as good. I know all this because it was my experience. My metabolism is now normal with the addition of the meds.
When people are together in a group, look at the direction of people's feet to see who they are interested in talking to.
This is a good example of how a little information can sometimes be worse than no information at all. Body language must be read in 'context and clusters' to provide any useful information. The simple act of pointing one's feet in a particular direction means nothing on its own. :)
I agree. It basically assumes the only factor involved is me pointing my body towards the person I want to talk to. CAN be true but also true - depends on the angle of the chair, if my back is aching so I'm twisting one way or the other to reduce the pain, am I also trying to keep an eye on something else in the area like a pet or small child or the BBQ. Stuff like that.
Load More Replies...This is undeniably good in situations where a woman is attempting to buy something that requires negotiation, such as a vehicle. If a man and woman are together, and the woman is doing the buying, but the salesman isn't really "there" yet into the process , a peek at the shoes will tell whether or not he is taking her seriously. Not all that long ago, only a few years, I broke off negotiation with a salesman and went to the receptionist, asking if I could buy the car from them and they get the same sales commission. The reply, " ma'am,I can sell you anything on the lot if you so desire, if you only let the manager know." So I did, made my final offer, drive home in my new car. I checked with receptionist later and was informed they did indeed get the commission, their very first one!
Not true. A single act of body language means nothing without being accompanied by other postures, gestures, or movements to corroborate the initial supposition.

All I know is that when I intentionally turn my feet toward the exit as a subtle clue I'm done socializing, no one ever seems to get the memo.
No if the opposite sex is interested in you they will point their knees or feet your way. Unless they know this and deliberately don't do it. You can say in a group because some people could stand that way and not even be thinking about you.
Oh, the general direction someone is facing means they want to talk to them who knew? The problem with this is polite people generally face the person that is talking to them even if they don't want to talk to them. Like their feet are subconsciously tracking the person they really want to talk to like radar or is the kind of group where no one moves.

If you eat ice cream and other things with care so that it doesn't freeze up your soft palate, you won't get brain freeze. Now I did try that and it actually didn’t work for me. Still just had to painfully wait it out.
For those of you who suffer through migraines, a brain freeze is an easy way to lessen the effects. My go to strategy is a cup full of ice with cold water, drinking it through a straw. I have chronic migraines that give me intense vertigo. I'm on medication for it, but I still get slight vertigo every day. Whenever I start feeling dizzy, I do this and it really helps a lot.
When you are very tired and you feel you could sleep for 10 hours, taking a short nap ( like 20 minutes) might actually help, instead of sleeping for longer. You feel energized enough to keep going if you have something important and immediate to do.
This is not useful for insomniacs. Naps make it harder to get good sleep during the night.
As an insomniac, I can confirm Joolee is correct.

I will sleep more deeply ll the way through the night, nd wake up feeling more rested. So, for me, naps just defeat the purpose.
Listen, when I lie down for a nap, I set an alarm for 1.5 hours later and somehow always end up sleeping for 4-5 hours. 20 minutes isn't enough for anything.
My stepdad fascinates me. He can fall asleep immediately and 10-15 minutes later, be as refreshed as if he got 8 hours. It takes me at least 10-15 minutes to FALL asleep.
That's terrible advice. You could be very tired after having stayed up for 20 hours of work or other reasons. A 20 minute nap won't energize you at all. It'll make you feel worse.
how do you go unconscious quick for 10 minutes? my brain will not shut up for half hour to hours
I can't understand how someone can just take a "quick" nap. It takes me at least 30 minutes to fall asleep.
Resetting your sleep schedule -- just fast for a few hours before the time you want to go to sleep. You'll wake up hungry as if it's morning.
No, YOU might be able to do that, but it won't work for everybody / most people. I know I wake up in the night if I'm hungry, for example, and then ruin my night's sleep. Sleep is the area where everyone likes to dispense all the advice, but it's the least transferable, most individual thing.
It's not even consistent in the same person. Sometimes I take my medicine early in the morning so I can sleep at night and my mind races. Sometimes I take it late and I don't get sleepy. Sometimes melatonin works. Sometimes it works so well I wake up at 3am rested. Sometimes a hot tea before bed helps. Sometimes I get heartburn. There are so many stinking factors with sleep, maybe have a comprehensive list of all the things that work for anyone and we can all just go down the list until we find what works, but generalizing advice about sleep is useless.

Insomniac and sleep shifter here - nahhhhhh lol. I just have to listen to my body. I'm currently on a half night/half day schedule. Sometimes I'm awake all night and go to sleep at 6 am, sometimes I sleep and wake up at 6 am. Being neurodivergent sucks sometimes.
I guess this works for some people, but I don't wake up hungry. I usually have a big lunch, and maybe a snack after work, but I don't wake up hungry. Most days I only eat one meal a day, and it's lunch. I might have some radishes in the morning for breakfast *if* I feel hungry, but usually I only have one meal a day.
If you really want to reset your sleep schedule go camping for 2-3 days. It only works if you want rest your schedule back to a "normal " sleep schedule of awake with the sun sleep through the night. It will get you back to your normal circadian rhythm at least.

STRENGTH TRAINING. The author is saying that having muscle mass prevents certain diseases. Breast cancer included. DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE ANY NECK, SHOULDER, OR UPPER/LOWER BACK PROBLEMS! It can make common conditions chronic, and accelerate any chronic conditions. If you have any type of muscle, joint or bone problems (arthritis, degenerative disc, spinal stenosis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, hernia, bulging disc's, nerve damage of any kind, neuropathy - you get the idea), please consult with your particular specialists (orthopedics, rheumatologist, chiropractors, etc) first. Or alternatively, drink as much water as alcohol during your boozing session. Sure it'll make you wanna pee a lot, especially after the flood gates are opened for the first time, but it helps a lot to not get drunk, and not get dehydrated which is the main cause of a hangover ;)
A commitment to strong alcohol and massive volume of consumption can defeat any hangover cure, I've sadly found
The first time I drank enough to get blackout drunk (I'm still missing a few hours) I was also drinking a copious amount of water. Couldn't walk straight and everything was spinning when I tried to go to bed. Woke up with no hangover.

Hello sleep schedule, would you like to play a game of solitaire, I have a banana.
Eating veggies and fruits, and getting a good night's sleep will give you more energy than you get from caffeine, everyday. Also, caffeine gives you a boost but if you use it everyday it just gets you back to "normal", so save the coffee for days you really need a boost.
i drink a cup of coffee simply for the reason that i enjoy it, it's nothing to do with energy, i don't need any extra energy, so i buy nice coffee, to drink and enjoy the flavour and the aroma

Drink more water. Always.
If you feel at all off, emotionally, drink a large glass of water, whether you're anxious, angry, or sad. That doesn't always fix it, but sometimes it does, and if it didn't, at least you're a little more hydrated.
When you wake up in the morning, drink a large glass of water before anything else. You will feel more awake, and you may avoid morning constipation.
But then I pee alot and it's okay if I am at home but peeing at small intervals when i am outside is not feasible.
If you feel you NEED to drink a lot of water, get yourself checked for diabetes. It can be the first sign.
I find that when I feel off, anxious angry or sad, a glass of wine is a lot more reliable than a glass of water.
This is what, third, fourth one in this dumb post that suggests drinking water. Lucky they mentioned it (repeatedly), I usually just funnel it straight down the sink as I never knew what to do with it before 🙄

Keto…. When the body goes into ketosis from complete fasting after 36-48 hrs. No “keto” diet includes 48 hr fasts. This is called the Atkins diet. The founder died youngish from a heart attack reasonably brought on from a lifelong high protein/fat diet. This is one of those "super easy to say but not so easy to do" generalisations. If you already have a physical issue, which makes it difficult to get some sort of exercise, then the generalisation makes you feel like rubbish. If you are struggling to make ends meet, you eat what you can afford, when you can afford it. At the present, the cost of healthier food items (even basic ones) is really difficult for some. I used to take about 3 Ibuprophen when having a panic attack that lasted more than a couple minutes (they were seriously severe, sometimes lasting hours, and often wound me up in the ER). Ibuprophen relaxes your muscles within about 15 minutes, and once your muscles start to relax, your mind can kind of start to calm down a bit, and you can then gain control. Just be careful to not take more than 4 at the most, or you can cause problems with your liver. Also, a good way to stop being dizzy, or to cure a mild headache-- shut your eyes very tightly, then open them really wide while looking down to your left. Don't move your whole head, JUST your eyes. Shut them again very tightly, then open again very wide, while looking down to your right. Repeat this again, while looking up to your left. Then again, looking up to your right. Then do this again, while looking up like you're trying to see your eyebrows. Again, it's important to keep your head still, and only do this while moving just your eyes. Helps me almost every time.
Nurse here. There are so many incorrect things in this post. First, ibuprofen helps with inflammation. It is not a muscle relaxer. Second, you can safely take 4 tabs (to equal 800mg). You should always eat something when taking ibuprofen. Taking it on an empty stomach can lead to ulcers and GI bleeds. Third, ibuprofen affects your kidneys, not your liver. That’s Tylenol. 🙄
I would take a guess that the OP is feeling a placebo effect from the Ibuprofen. Plus it gives them a semblance of control that they are doing something when they feel so out of control when having a severe panic attack. Maybe they could try to switch to taking 3 of something of a similar size as ibuprofen when they have a panic attack. Maybe a mint or something that would have a strong flavor that would distract them. This could mimic the original motion and also give the body something else to focus on.

No no no no no no no to everything OP suggests. If you are doing this because you can’t afford prescription medication, don’t. Instead learn breathing techniques free on YouTube, put on a short meditation, have a green tea (engages your brain in making it and the l-Theanine will help too), go for a short walk. And if you are able to, speak to your doctor for some actually effective medication.
My partner destroyed his liver years ago because he used to take Tylenol all the time because of constant headaches. It turned out that his headaches were a result of him needing glasses, but by the point he realized, his liver was wrecked for nothing. Don't abuse medication. Just because something is over-the-counter, it doesn't make it safe to take like it's candy. Please only take medication when you really have to and you either actually know what you're doing and you understand how your medication works, or if you have doctor's instructions.
If you have severe anxiety, it’s always best to refer to a psychiatrist. That said, I was told that Benadryl is a better otc for an alternative to anxiety medication. I take hydroxyzine for panic attacks, but from a prescriber. Hydroxyzine is also used for allergies and has much of the same chemical makeup as Benadryl. For Americans, I know prescriptions and psychiatric help can be too expensive. I still recommend seeing a psychiatrist, if you can.
Ibuprofen, not ibuprophen - in both American English and the Queen’s English.

Sleeping hack #2: It sounds too basic and boring, but if it's an option, start going to sleep at the same time every night. Do it as much as you can and do it for a while, like maybe a month or two (it's okay to have a late night here and there if necessary, but if it isn't, just go to sleep), and be sure it's the same time every night. Set an alarm if it helps. After your body is used to it, you will feel sleepy at that time, like clockwork, your sleep quality will improve dramatically, and you will wake up refreshed. Best sleep of my life!
if you need to pop your tailbone for whatever reason, lay on your bed or a couch on your side, and then bring your knees in. After that, try and move one leg up while moving the other down. It's hard to explain without a diagram but it's really simple once you figure it out.
Also, for colouring large areas/shading with a normal wooden pencil, use the side of the lead and not just the very tip. This does not work for mechanical pencils as far as I know.
