Hawaii Will Turn Old City Buses Into Mobile Homeless Shelters With Showers
Old city buses in Hawaii are going to be converted into homeless shelters if architecture firm Group 70 International is successful. The vehicles are to operate in fleets, with different units dedicated to different purposes, from living spaces to recreation rooms.
May Ry Kim of Group 70 International told Hawaii News that the design “is based on the premise that you could walk in to a hardware store, buy everything you need in one go and build everything with no trade skills,” so that it can be built by a team of untrained volunteers.
LIFT, the volunteer organization helping to execute the project hopes to build two buses by the end of this summer. 70 buses and all the material required for renovations will be donated.

Up to 70 retired buses in Hawaii will be converted into homeless shelters
Volunteers will strip the interior and renovate using donated material
The buses will function as a mobile fleet
Some will be used for living spaces, others for showers, and others yet as recreation rooms
The project hopes to renovate two buses by the end of the summer

Share on FacebookWhat a novel idea - you're providing a space for the homeless, while at the same time re-purposing a retiring vehicle!
this is so awesome !! I have been fantasizing about doing this in southern California for the last couple years. I'm so happy my fantasy is becoming reality !! If anyone is involved in a project like this in SO CAL please share !!
I think this is AMAZING! It's about time someone came up with an innovative idea to help the homeless instead of pretending they don't exist. It's a great idea & I hope other countries will follow this example. I am still wondering why here in the UK we send millions of pounds overseas when we can't even get our own homeless people off the street! Why?? I just can't understand it. (& yes I have complained to my MP.)
Very nice and informative article here. I also can be helpful here :) Filling out forms is super easy with PDFfiller. Try it on your own here a form and you'll make sure how it's simple.
Great Idea!!To bad you couldn't get the people from Tiny homes to help and utilize space!!
How are they going to do that when it is illegal to live in a "mobile home" here, included cars, trailer homes, and busses???
I think its a wonderful idea that would help more people than were aware of, i also think that there would need to be some input from homeless using the service. maybe require some sort of community service or after they get cleaned up attend job fairs.
What a fab idea, we need more wonderful novel ideas like this:~)
At a recent local auction our university sold a pair of running 40' Gillig buses for $2500 each which would be perfect for this, unfortunately our city council doesn't have the creativity and foresight to try something like this; they are still stuck in the old ways of throwing money at housing commissions for studying the problem - we get studies instead of solutions. If we just gave the homeless homes, with support services, we could end homelessness for 1/4 of the cost of our current subsidy based systems.
The homeless problem in Hawaii is pretty bad, and I really like this innovative approach. The economy of Hawaii makes it very tough for local families to survive. With gas at over $4.50 a gallon and milk at over $7 a gallon (just example), families are getting squeezed every where they turn. You combine that with the influx of wealthy people coming in and buying up $1 million condos and you have families living in what are called tent villages. It breaks your heart to see kids living in tents on sidewalks. I hope that there are more projects like this for the islands.
Help for the working poor that are almost homeless and just staying afloat. There are so many family just making it each month and have no saving or safety net , A family working and just getting by needs a free hand out so they can keep there kids feed and happy without hitting a food bank or missing school trips because there not able to pay the extra , Ive done work to help the homeless but it's always funny how people have to have nothing at all before someone steps in and helps out , Giving people that chose to live on the streets or people on drugs a free place is not right when you have kids that cant play hockey or sports because they have no money, there just as poor IMO. Staying with a partner and looking after kids in this day is a thing we should be rewarding family's first "Mom & Dad with kids" should always be first to get help. This help the homeless makes your feel good but keeping kids off the streets before they end up there is a better way to donate

We need to give housing to working family's so mom and dad can do there job and keep family's together Nobody should be on the streets but we should be saving family's first mom dad & kids should always be first If i was giving out something to help id find a family and help them so there kids will grow up like they should with a mom and dad and money to play sports and other school events go to a movie or bowling , Putting a drug head or other person that chose as an adult to not work in a free housing program will do nothing to save kids or family's and thats what we should be working on, Kids are seeing this and thinking look give up and get stuff free
I'm not saying we don't need to help the homeless or thats there all bad people Im just saying we need to get priority's straight kids should never suffer and family's working to do what they can for there kids should be first in line Then help the others when we have the kids taken care of If we can stop them from hitting the streets it will fix the street problem

You should send the creators your idea as I do believe this is actually a relevant concern. :)
