Explain why you think a position (not necessarily one you agree with) that is widely considered absurd is actually more reasonable it sounds.

That anyone can be subject to, or perpetrator of, racism. If you discriminate against someone based on their ethnicity or skin colour then that's racism.
Sadly some folks think if you are a particular race you are automatically a racist scum. Or, the flip side, that if you are a certain race you CANNOT be a racist. Ridiculous assumption since we are all human and all equally capable of being a racist d!c&

Load More Replies...The idea that there is a simple binary of white cisgendered/straight people here, and all other nonwhite + queer people there, is profoundly wrong. Systemic oppression favors the intersections of white, male, Christian, and wealthy, but it is not a slam-dunk formula for pointing out -isms and oppressions. The black and hispanic communities are notoriously homophobic, sexist, and antisemitic. Many queer people are bi-phobic or transphobic. Jewish people and many immigrant communities are often openly racist against black people, with derogatory words about them included in their own languages. Many of the same POC speaking out about systemic oppression and colonialization still go to the Christian churches of their colonizers, without question. White people raising kids of color, partnered w POC, or children of POC also deal with racism. One of my best friend's mothers just died: an antivax lesbian black woman who supported Trump because she hated Mexicans. It's not a simple binary.
Racism can only exist within the confines of ignorance. We are all hard-wired to fear or fight those who are or appear to be different from us and our immediate tribe. And it takes a bit of educating by the tribe, or the self, that though other people may appear or sound differently from us they are essentially the same as us.
This is not true at all, if so how would it explain wanderlust? Some people go out of there way to encounter new people and cultures.

Let's give an example. Say you are being called a "thiefist", because you steal stuff. Now suppose your parents have been thiefists, and their parents, and their great-grandparents. Suppose furthermore that your house is full of stuff they stole. You however, do not believe you are a thiefist, nor do you want to be one, because you think it is wrong. UNLESS you give back the stolen stuff, you (a) are in fact a thiefist by proxy and (b) you have benefited from it. Now, suppose a person from another ethnicity breaks into your house. Suppose the burglar comes from a family whose stuff has regularly been stolen by thiefists. And his parents' stuff. And his grandparents' stuff. He's never been able to own stuff because in the past, thiefists always came and took it. By burgling you now, is he now also a thiefist, or is it restorative justice? Just to think about.
I like where you are coming from but I think that you may be describing revenge rather than restorative justice. Restorative justice focuses on three overall aspects; Encounter, Repair and Transform. Each element is discrete and essential. Together they represent a journey toward wellbeing and wholeness that victims, offenders and community members can experience. Encounter leads to repair, and repair leads to transformation. The idea that somebody steals, so you are allowed to steal from them just leads to a perpetual state of recurrent stealing. I heard, and have no idea whether it's true (now there is a dubious intro to a so-called 'fact'), that psychopaths don't possess the emotional makeup to understand jokes or know why they are funny, and therefore can't fake a laugh at the right moment. My reasoning: You're still using electricity, probably from a fossil fuel-gobbling power plant, not to mention the funky minerals and such for the high-tech batteries, etc. Unless your car runs on its own solar panels, no.
Also, we don't know how to recycle solar panels for the most part. In 30 years, there will be a huge pile of dead solar panels we, at current technology, don't know what to do with. Also, the magnets and other exotic metals are transported by cargo ship all over the world, which is one of the dirtiest forms of transport when it comes to CO2 pollution. I'm sorry someone down voted you, because you are 100% correct.
Yeah, nobody thinks about tht, or the environmental cost of mining rare minerals, or the wars that will start over them, or or or or or.... *sigh* I hate fossil fuels, but we can't just ignore the problems electric vehicles bring. We still haven't made a clean internal combustion engine on a mass scale, and that's been around for over a century! ... I'm an eco-nut, which is why I abhor the energy-gobble of all this "clean tech". It's never 100% clean, but our current power lines can be used to transmit power from wind/solar/etc. instead of fossil fuel-powered plants. Old solar panels, batteries, etc.? More problematic.
Load More Replies...This logic is flawed. Transferring electricity over a grid is much more efficient and cleaner than transferring liquid fuels. Just remember, that one gallon of gas you pour in is about 6.3 lbs comes out as roughly 20 pounds of CO2 as the carbon from the gas bonds with oxygen from the air. Most power plants here in NV use natural gas with about 20% renewables, and 70% natural gas. https://energy.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/energynvgov/content/Media/2020%20Status%20of%20Energy%20Report.pdf So given that they can transmit power to your doorstep using already existing power lines rather than truck in fuel is cleaner. That the power coming from the grid to an electric car is partially from renewables is cleaner than ICE cars. Fossil fueled power plants mostly burn NG, although even coal ones and are more efficient and cleaner than number of the engines of ICE cars producing the same energy. (Weight and cost of efficiency measures & emissions controls mater less on a plant than a car.)
The power transfer on the grid is cleaner, but the power still has to be *generated*. Natural gas (NG) is a fossil fuel. Long-term, we cannot sustain this. *The energy has to be generated*. Does it matter if it's in an internal combustion engine fueled by gasoline or from a power plant using fossil fuels? No. Long-term, it really doesn't. Ergo, my opinion.
Load More Replies...It takes two pounds of fossil fuels to manufacture one pound of conventional automobile with a gas engine. It take 6 pounds of fossil fuel to manufacture one pound of electric car, most of it the batteries. (OK, these numbers are a bit old (from the mid 2000's) but I can't imagine they have changed much.)
There's that, too. It's why I oppose ethanol fuel in the US. It takes more fossil fuel to make the ethanol fuel than is saved. Forget it, y''know? That one just makes corn people rich.
Load More Replies...This is a point usually made by climate deniers. The shift to new technologies always starts before the tech is actually ready and perfected. If we wanted to wait until it was perfected first then companies would have no reason to invest in developing it. Early adopters push new tech for the rest of us. By the time the majority buy it the bugs will be ironed out and most of the electricity will be cleaner and cleaner still. Moving to electric allows for renewable and clean car fuel, staying with fossil fuels actively prevents it..
This shows us that we need to ALSO improve power plants and batteries. Not that we should just give up! Electric cars are a PART of the solution, no one ever said it was I entirely of it, nor does new technology start off perfect, it takes investment and time.
Unfortunately, we need to perhaps rely less on destroying the environment for that technology. Rare earth mineral demands have led to problems, aside from the obvious one of "we still need to generate that power". I'm all for improvement. Let's ditch fossil fuels! Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, we've got the resources. And the tech is prohibitively expensive for 90% of the planet's population or so, which is another problem, alas.

Load More Replies...Efficiency must be considered in regards to converting fossil fuels to electricity and the efficiency of a gas engine. A modern 4-stroke engine may be 40-50% efficient (energy content of petrol to energy at the wheels). Power plants are very specialized and engineered to very high efficiency, a coal plant may exceed 80% efficiency. An electric motor may be upwards of 90% efficiency. Though there is still fossil fuel involved, less of it's energy content is wasted. I'm not saying there are not valid issues that must be addressed, but simply saying the car is "coal-powered" is practically a non-sequitor.
Not only that, the cobalt they use for the batteries are actually gained by heavely underpaid people. Plus, when everybody is charging their electric cars, there will be a powershortage in the future. Stupid thing is, for example in the Netherlands, companies can't even store the excess electricety that is deilvered to them by people who have solarpanels... so there is no saving, no storing, just energy goig to waste...

I think with most breeds it's the dog owners who are to blame for a dog's (bad) behaviour. Many ppl get a certain breed because it's pretty or give some sort of street credit but don't always look into what the specific dog needs in order to thrive and be a well-behaved dog.
Yes! A lot of people say they don't like "yappy" dogs. But if the owners of those dogs don't take care of them, of course they're going to act up. Folks think a smaller dog means less work, but they need exercise, play and mental stimulation too. Smarter dogs need a looooot of mental stimulation, like poodles, which is why they get a bad rep. But properly trained and exercised they're wonderful.

My neighbor had two adorable rats that would climb all over Gracie, and she just smiled and wagged her tail the whole time. I miss that perfect little angel!

Load More Replies...We had a pit/beagle/basset mix named Murphy Alexander. We called him a "pagle." He was amazingly zen and chill. Brutus Augustus is a pit/pointer mix and is the sweetest dog ever. He is not ferocious but severely protective. Especially with me.
Generally speaking, Pit Bull Terriers are wonderful, friendly, happy dogs. But when one turns, it can cause a lot more damage than a Chihuahua because of its size and strength. That's why they get the reputation for 'being mean'. I would never own one, simply because I don't need 50lbs of sharp-toothed muscle from my dog. I just need a friendly companion. Each to their own.
My worst personal dog experience was not with a pittie or even a "bully" breed - but with an Irish Setter. That dog was psycho! And if you thought the dog was bad, his owner was worse!
I love so-called "bully" breeds, with their big ole block shaped heads. Every single one I've encountered has been overgrown lap dogs, AND have all just let my little dachshund tell them what to do. Husband's BFF has one that can tell when I'm not ok, and she will stay with me and comfort me until she senses I'm ok; when I walk in their house, she will bark like mad until I come over and say hello and love on her sweet self. They are amazing dogs, and I would have one in a heartbeat if I didn't live in a tiny house that doesn't have the space a big dog deserves!

Pre-pandemic, before I worked from home, I was sitting on the commuter train one day, trying to sleep, but these two women behind me were talking, loudly, about this one woman's chickens, the eggs they laid, etc. Then the other woman said "Maybe I should do that, two." But the first woman replied "No! Don't do it! You'll drown in eggs! And you can't sell them." (Well, not without jumping through countless, impossible hoops put up by the Agriculture Department.)

Basically it goes like this : Europe and china are mostly atheist. Rest of asia: buddhist, hindu or muslim. North africa: mostly muslim. Subsaharan africa: mostly christian. The religiosity levels in subsaharan africa are similar to the bible belt in USA. Closest atheism levels to USA in Africa are in SA, at about 20-something percent. Europe it's around 50 percent. Point is, atheism is growing in the west as the old ignorant people who don't "get" internet, die out. The resurgence of religiosity in the states is identity-linked to republicanism and trumpism, even though trump himself is not really a christian, just a poser trying to scoop evangelicals (who are creduluous anyway).
Several friends of mine, mostly women, travel to African nations regularly for work. In Kenya and Ethiopia, they are constantly asked within the first three sentences of an exchange if they're Christian. They have actually been held hostage by taxi drivers for saying "No." Now their training includes advice to lie and say you are a Christian. And married.

Never really understood religion... They all preach about love.... and then they come up with a reason why to not love people who are different-minded. Imho, religions should be banned from school and politics, maybe even banned from life, it brings no good into a (childs) mind to be forced into a religion that is based upon scriptures that have been altered so many times to fit the minds of those who want to rule over others (and women almost always being the ones to be put in a submissive role)... One can be a good person without having to hide behind a storybook that tells them that if they f*ck up, they will be forgiven if ony they ask for forgiveness... Or that it's okay to lie and kill other people who don't follow your believe because it's all for the greater good. Religions are the cause of most killings, murders and mutilations.
In Australia, most people don't give a rat's what your religion is, and they actively hate having beliefs shoved in their faces. People who do that used to be called wowsers. I honestly think that's a large part of why the last Prime Minister was voted out - he's a born again, and Australians don't like religiosity.

(I'm agnostic, not athiest, only because I come from a Catholic family and hold that religion itself in a higher regard than any other religion, mainly because Catholics don't try to shove their religion down others throats by going to people's doors and asking what religion they are, and have they heard about the Book of Mormon, or about Jehovah and his divine plan, or, even worse, the evangelical born again Christian troops who don't even knock before they barge in and try to become part of your furniture while they tell you that you need to be "saved", because as a Catholic or an agnostic, you are not Christian, even if you don't identify as such.) Here, no one cares what you are either, with the exception of the three aforementioned religious encampments, and the only ones who really won't politely leave when you tell them you're not interested in hearing about the lord's plan are the pesky evangelicals/born again Christians, and thankfully there aren't many of them here.

Whilst we understand that the present generation of descendants of those colonists did not do the brutalising, they have to admit, of sheer historical fact, that the descendants of the indigenous populations find themselves cordonned off in "Reservations" or "bantustans" or "west banks" etc., and as a result cannot fully participate in the economy of the colonial nation-state. The result is that even though no direct violence is targeted (debatable, e.g. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Flint Michigan, etc), the current descendants of colonisers BENEFIT from having been coincidentally born white, and the descendants of indigenous tribes are oppressed coincidentally having been born into that group. First of all, I really can't get the black/white when talking about people, there are no complete white people (except albino's) and no black people (except for a few tribes in Africa, where the skinttone is so dark it almost looks like black). We are all people with a lighter or darker skin, underneath were all the same and that is how I treat everyone, I never judges by skincolor but on how one acts. On the subject of slavery.... and I know it's a touchy subject, those people who were stolen from other countries, were firstly put into slavery by their own people... then, when they saw a market to be expanded, they sold people to become slaves elsewhere. Even today there is still slavery, all over this world. Looking back to point fingers to what once was, is useless, just do better today.

I have few ideas of how it could realistically happen, but America needs to split up. Yeah, yeah, all that old rhetoric about a nation divided, but Conservatives and Liberals have two vastly different understandings of reality at this point. If Christo-fascists want to live in a country governed by the bible, let 'em have it. I want to see them live the reality they claim they want. So let the South rise again! Or let Texas secede. Let them establish Trumpistania or the Jesus States of America there. They can even build a wall around it. As long as they leave the rest of us alone and keep their religion to themselves.

No, we're a nation divided against itself. There are fewer differences between a CA liberal/conservative, a MT liberal/conservative, and a FL liberal/conservative than there are a CA liberal and a CA conservative. Mississippi may have different practical and social needs compared to Oklahoma, but those differences are not divided on party lines. The divisions between us are not on state lines, but party ones. Conservative Americans have entirely different beliefs, and have developed a completely different reality that is an open threat and danger to the rest of us.

Me, I live in Europe and the genera idea is that it's going towards being "ruled" by Brussel as they highest power that even wants to make it so, that European ruling stands above the law in each individual country. Me for one, I think that would be the biggest mistake ever. Each country has it's own ways of living, that has been thriving for years. All started going south with the more power the rulers in Brussels got... I wouldn't mind if they got dismanteled today and we'd go back to the economic EU as before, with closed borders so countries are able to know who enters their country.As soon as the borders were gone, it became a mess.

We aren't allowed to teach their children anyway, because their biggest driving fear is that their children will not have the same political/religious beliefs. One of their current moves is to drive us current educators out of the field and replace us with Christian Conservatives who will toe the party line. Schools have already been seeing money from corporations affecting what is/isn't taught for generations. Conservatives want nothing but private bible-based schools, and you're going to see an increase of schools/books/lessons sponsored by Conservative corporations. There are already issues, and it seems preferable to have the majority of our population of kids far away from the kind of parenting and fascist rhetoric that's resulted in radicalized school shooters.

Some of us are Jewish. And you're just another kind of proselytizing Christian if you're an Atheist that says stuff like 'all religions are dumb' when you've only ever known Christianity because you're an ex-Christian, and so you think that's what 'religion' is. I have taken religion classes. I do hear myself. Do you hear YOU? If it requires you to accept something as true on "faith", then it is brain breaking garbage and deserves ridicule. The specifics of what that faith is about or how it is expressed are utterly irrelevant.
I have a doctorate in this issue and atheists - at least those who have a brain - consider all religions equally false and perniciious because they are both predicated on rejection of scientific evidence in favour of unsubstantiated belief in the supernatural. To allow that a supernatural event is truly supernatural and that it supports religion of any kind, we would have to do the following (a) replicate the experience or event reliably (b) under controlled scientific conditions with neutral observers who can confirm the phenomenon is veridical and not an illusion or delusion (c) and it must be measurable. Please note that if this is possible, ipso facto it is empirical and part of this world, therefore NATURAL and not a supernatural phenomenon. So no. It's all bogus.
Richard Dawkins said that a universe with a god and one with no gods would be fundamentally different, obeying different natural laws, thus making the question of the existence of god a scientific one. And so far no evidence backs up the god hypothesis.

You’re missing the actual fundamental difference between theists of any kind and atheists. We answer this question differently: is the universe governed by purely natural laws, or are there supernatural forces that can work outside of those laws to affect the material world? Atheists (and apatheists and antitheists) believe firmly that supernatural forces do not exist, and that there is zero evidence for them. Yes, there are unexplained things, but we don’t assign answers to them without evidence. We didn’t understand, or in some cases even suspect the existence of gravity, electromagnetism, gene theory, an expanding universe, the structure of the brain, evolution, quantum physics, etc.,etc., etc., until years or decades or centuries of study led us to their purely natural if often counterintuitive explanations. For any of the myriad remaining mysteries of life and the cosmos we fully expect there to be a natural answer.
So yes, atheists disbelieve (I won’t call it dumb) any of the magic that any and all religions believe in. I've used "they" for decades without caring about the grammatical point. German does it as well. The respectful form of "you" in German is "sie" but it means "they". Old English had this form as well, it was "sé". He was "hé" and she was "seo".

As both student and prof, I've found there are vast differences. Ignorance is one thing: someone can't be faulted because they didn't have the privilege of access to learning things. If someone just hasn't had the opportunity to think about something, or gain new information, that's not anything to be ashamed of or castigated for. Learning disabilities, too, or different ways of learning are not wrong, either, obviously. OTOH, the number of people who are proud of being stupid because they think "intelligence" is "elitist" is jaw-dropping. People actively refusing to learn because they DON'T want to think about things should be ridiculed.
Intelligence and knowledge are two very different things. It's true that a person has some control over their intelligence, but a significant amount of it is inborn.

I live in Washington State, about 100 miles from the Canadian border, in a rural community. So, as you can probably guess, I believe in the existence of Sasquatch. Never had the privilege of seeing one, despite hiking for miles in very remote areas, but I've met people who claim to have seen one.
I've never had a problem with cryptozoology. I think it's quite fun and eagerly await proof of these creatures. Heck they found the hobbit on island of flores which shows that paleological species of humans survived into the stone age at least, so the idea that there may be cavemen walkign around somewhere in forests, to this day, seems ok to me.
I almost don't want it to be discovered as true, because you know what will happen then. The "these creatures should be rounded up and put in a zoo or conservation area" folks will be at war with the "these creatures are sentient, intelligent beings, hairy persons, if you will and should be considered as such", and everyone will be against the " We need to round up all these dangerous, smelly sub-humans and keep them in concentration camps so they can't hurt us or our children" folks. Progressives and socialists question the right to property (the redistribution of wealth), they succumb to Frederic Bastiat's fallacies often (they claim that when I say I oppose government making healthcare affordable I am against making healthcare affordable), they argue everyone who got rich is from robbing people (the Adam Smith quote, they wrongly using the labor theory of value or zero-sum fallacy), they want plenty of "free stuff" ignoring the harmful effects of the economy (and how nothing is free), they want government to have massive control, and they call themselves socialists when that philosophy is absolutely rejected in modern economics. This leads to the prevention of free healthcare, free or even reasonably priced education, arts are only available when and if the rich deign to donate for it, they donate to arts they choose, where they choose and they write off the donation by not paying tax or allow their own art to be displayed (saving insurance) so they can sell it later for a higher price making profit but avoiding tax. The vulnerable and elderly are only taken care of if they are wealthy.
Homelessness is fairly unusual in Socialist countries but endemic in the US. Workers rights are unheard of in the US but standard under socialism. Fair pay - not in the US but a right in Socialist ctys. Holidays, sick pay, maternity leave, paternity leave, the opportunity to retrain and change career and the opportunity to progress in life and career. Even the opportunity to have children, something THAT basic. In the US if you need this you'll only get it if you're wealthy enough - and it IS expensive. For example, many people in New York self-identify as Italians. But if you put them through a test like DNAandMe, you find out that in fact their italian DNA percentage is negligible. Meaning they are CULTUIRALLY new-york-italian perhaps, but DNA, not. So you accept them as italian because of how they speak, what religion they practice, what food they eat, etc. And you would not be so rude as to say to them "dude you aren't italian".

It sounds like you haven't had an opportunity to think about things like gender performativity or social constructs from a different viewpoint than your own, Ryner. One good question to ask yourself is how you would feel if--and I'm making an assumption that you're a man--everyone around you kept insisting you were a woman. Since you haven't probably questioned your own gender (and that's fine, I don't question mine, either, not everyone does), you haven't experienced the psychological horrors of everyone around you insisting you are the gender that you do not identify with, and refusing to see you any other way. Take time to listen to others' stories about these experiences with empathy, and FFS, let others figure out who they are without your ridicule. I'll have fewer suicidal/depressed kids in my classrooms, if so, for starters.
@Jan unfortunately this issue is obviously very disturbing to the people on the right. Remember a conservative is precisely someone who wants to conserve the status quo or the past. In the past we didn't recognise multiple genders etc - at least not in white english speaking culture - and hence the idea that the culture might change, or that the world might be different to how they were brought up, is alarming and scary to them. That's why you see these strongly visceral reactions from people about the gender issue. Fundamentally they are watching a lynchpin of their world view - that there are boys and girls - fall apart, and it scares them.
