what are signs of ADHD? i think i might have it but i can’t really go to the psychologist (parents).
Trouble focusing and staying still, mind always wandering, getting distracted easily, losing things frequently, and hyperfocusing are some symptoms. Edit to add: these are only symptoms if excessive
I don't mean to attack you here but that's pretty normal, especially for teens. I am absolutely not denying that you have it, but you might not want to advertise this as the symptoms when pretty much every kid experiences this.
Load More Replies...There's a really long symptom list, and not everyone presents the exact same way. It's a sliding scale, like most things. Some people have it mild, some are more extreme. Some symptoms are more extreme in presenting than others. You can get tested for it, but trying to find out EXACTLY where you fit on the scale is... well, it can take years, to be honest. For me, I have a lovely cocktail of depression, anxiety, OCD and ADHD which means I present differently than a lot of people, all of my issues play off of each other in general.
There is a long symptom list. The most common are trouble focusing, trouble sitting still or fidgeting frequently, being hyperactive (especially near bedtime), hyper focusing on things that interest you, mind wandering away, it also presents differently in different people.
same! my parents think its weird but I am pretty sure I have it too and idk how to get myself tested
What is it like, generally? Like everyday things you have to deal with (I know it can vary, but I'm curious about your experience)
For me, it's mainly losing track of things. Possessions, time, conversations, etc. Also I struggle a lot with focus, for example right now I have an assignment I need to do but I can't do it because every time I try to read the instructions, the words are meaningless blocks of color on my screen. If I manage to force myself to read it, I forget the last words I read.
It's either losing time or not being able to sit down, you will zone out at random times, and it will usually be either you can't focus or you can't stay still. Pacing helps though, calms it down.
With my ADHD I cannot concentrate at all. My school work was really low quality in the subjects that I didn't like but I focused lots on the subjects I did and always got good grades for them. I also cannot sleep and I usually fall asleep around 12 o'clock.
I'm constantly fidgety. I have to have something in my hands or I start picking my nails. My mind is always running a mile a second, constantly flipping from one idea/topic to another. It's hard to focus and remember things, especially tasks.
Struggle to not explode about everything and get your work done like right now I cant stop typing and I really need to pay attention but I cant stop.
Ok I'm getting a little concerned about how familiar all of these experiences sound... I guess I kinda subconsciously assumed everyone feels like that from time to time, although I've been wondering for a while if I actually have ADHD and now I'm starting to think I probably do
Are the stereotypes about ADHD actually true?
Depending on which stereotypes. Yes it is really hard for us to focus, but no, we aren't bouncing off the walls.
Well, some of us are bouncing off walls so I guess so?
Load More Replies...A decent bit of them are, but there is so much more to it, as with everything
Depends. There are different kinds of ADHD, so some people get them confused. There are also exagerations, ect. Overall, depends on the sterotype.
It really depends on which stereotype. There are actually different types of ADHD. You can get the hyperactive type (people that are really hyperactive) the inattentive and impulsive type (where people do not think before speaking or can't concentrate) or the combined type (both).
Something really confusing is how sometimes it feels unreal but I know it is real
Ohhhhh… I probably have that. Something about not responding to a situation as if you weren’t actually in it? Or being distant emotionally?
Load More Replies...i really do think i have it. how do i get my parents to let me get tested for it?
Maybe you could show them a symptom list and explain that you experience those? Or you could ask your doctor at your next appointment. Hope this helps
i think i might ask my doctor then
Load More Replies...First write down why you think you need testing. Trouble concentrating? Not doing homework? (if you can't you have it. kidding) Then ask your teacher/s what they think and have her/him/your pronoun here, tell your parents. Do schools still have school counselors? Not the ones for tragedies the ones that used to counsel about your schoolwork. That's the one to talk to.
What's the deepest rabbit-hole you've gone down when when switching between distraction and hyper focus?
We call that distraction in my mum 'shiny'. Like when she is driving and she sees something shiny on the side of the road, then she sees a personalized number plate and wonders if there is a story behind it, then gets talking about an event coming up, etc. Recently her hyperfocus has been about seeds. It began with her identifying plants that are native, or that she wants to plant, then she began saving seeds from plants whenever she sees one she hasn't got, and she goes back and forth researching whether it is better to remove the agapanthus, blackberries and scotch thistles, and what native bushfood plants she can buy, then what foods Indigenous Australians used them for...
I have a friend with it, and I'd really like to know how I can make it easier on him. How does it affect crushes/relationships/friendships? When you feel overwhelmed, is there anything I can do to help? Do you need more activities to keep up with it, or less so you can focus?
Well you can be loud and dominate the conversation without knowing it and then it hurts like being set on fire hen someone tells you to shush
The best thing you can do is guide them to other topics or distract them with other things
Load More Replies...My younger sister has really bad ADHD and when it comes to family/ friendships it gets overwhelming, and so we have to remind her to slow down. Exercising is a great way to exert extra energy, but my sister also enjoys writing songs as an extra activity. Know that there are different ways ADHD can show. I think I have it cause I'm always hyper focusing on things, but it could also be my OCD.
Is it ever positive
Hi, I think I have ADHD but I don’t know how to tell. What are the signs/symptoms?
I am a parent of two teens with ADHD but I don’t have it myself. I still wonder how it is that they can focus “if they want to” but can’t just “make themselves focus”. Both my kids have interesting hobbies they like and they have seemingly no problems focussing on, but they seemingly cannot make themselves focus if the topic isn’t a preferred one. Both kids have trouble completing schoolwork, for example, or researching something they don’t personally find interesting. I find it impossible to relate because I was a straight A student with no difficulties and its hard to navigate this and be proud of my kid’s’ accomplishments while also wishing they could do better.
Basically it’s very hard not to hyper focus and it’s very hard to focus sometimes
Load More Replies...Not sure if my answer will be valid but I just want to share my story. I “had” ADHD when I was 7-12 years old…I went to a psychiatrist that wanted me to punch a punching bag, beat up a doll, ask me how it felt…the whole time (this was 20 years ago) I was wondering, “why am I doing this? I don’t want to beat the c**p out of anything, I don’t even want to be here. I just want to climb a tree.” I was prescribed adderall and ritalin…I wasn’t hyper, in fact I still couldn’t concentrate, I was just numb. I didn’t eat. I was just a body that was warming a seat. It was horrible. Anyways love you all - TheGoodBoi
Not all meds work for everyone with ADHD. My mum and sister were both prescribed something that their new psych said 'worked best for adults with ADHD' and it jut made their symptoms worse and he refused to try anything else! My sister found another psych who put her back on the drug she had been taking since her teens which does work for her. She had tried ritalin and concerta in the past and they also didn't work for her.
How to explain to others what it feels like to have ADHD.
It's almost impossible but I do think the metaphor of "too many tabs open and some of them are playing music" is quite useful. Or, having a TV on, and someone is constantly switching channels and you can't make them stop.
I have 50 tabs open 5 are empty and I have no idea where the music is coming from
Load More Replies...For me, its like " SQUIRREL" distracted for a few minutes then, oh, oh ya, I was doing this task. Or sometimes its I'm doing this task, Im doing this task and Im stickin to it when something more priority comes up but I really want to finish what I'm doing. The whole time I'm doing the priority task, the other one is still forefront on my mind, distracting me
