Shocking Video Of Nurse Inflating Healthy Lungs Vs Smoker’s Reveals What Cigarettes Really Do To You
As soon as you put a cigarette into your mouth, it starts killing your body. However, coughs and other warning signs often prove too mild to make those smoking cigarettes kick the habit. But maybe this video will help them. Amanda Eller, a nurse from North Carolina, has shared a graphic comparison between healthy and smokers’ lungs. The difference is so eye-opening that nearly 500K people have already shared the footage on Facebook.
In the video, it’s easy to tell which is which. The healthy lungs are pinky red and the those that went through a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years look like a wreck, destroyed in a fire. “Because these lungs are COPD, cancerous lungs, the elastance is gone so that they will stretch out, but then the recoil of them just snaps right back,” a voice in the recording explained. Elastance is the ability of lungs to rebound after inhalation. Reduced elastance means the human lungs are stiff and have to work way harder to bring in sufficient air, leaving its possessor breathless, and if that’s not enough proof that smoking kills, we don’t know what is.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “[the] overall mortality among both male and female smokers in the United States is about three times higher than that among similar people who never smoked.” Cigarettes cause about one of every five deaths in the States each year, killing more than 480,000 people annually. However, it’s never too late. For example, quitting smoking before 40 reduces the risk of dying from smoking-related disease and lung cancer by about 90%.

To show the difference between the two, they inflated the healthy lungs
And made a video, illustrating that the healthy not only look, but work properly as well
Then, it was the turn of the cancerous lungs, damaged by 20 years of smoking a pack a day
The elastance was gone, so they would stretch out but then the recoil of them just snaps right back
The striking difference is visible in the second video
This inspired people to share their smoking stories
While others still defended their habit

so am I. You'll live longer and have fewer health problems
Load More Replies...Almost 4 years since my last cigarette (after smoking for 10+ years). One of the best decisions I made in my life. My health is significantly better, I must say in combination with a lot of exercise and healthier meals. There are absolutely none benefits that come with smoking. All bunch of excuses you tell yourself. You have only one lifetime and one body. Don't ruin it by pumping poison into your body.
I wanted to fit in so badly, going to high school in the south where everyone smoked. I tried for less than a week and thankfully the only thing my asthma has ever done positively for me, getting very ill and realizing my body couldn't handle that lol
Me too. I once sneaked a puff of my stepdad's cigarette and instantly had an asthma attack and I have not touched a cigarette since.
Load More Replies...While this is interesting to see, I doubt it will convince people. It is a single case, and thereby follows the logic of people saying "I know someone who smokesd two packs a day and just turned 95". There simply is no doubt that smoking is the single most ignored thing that greatly reduces the average lifespan and causes a plethora of health disadvantages, even outpacing deliberate (as in the Western world) or undesired (as in the developing world) malnutrition.
Hans, its all about the "Addiction" factor, pure and simple. Some are addicted to nicotine, some to sex, etc, etc. Me, I'm and adrenaline addict. I always took chances for the excitement, had a four cylinder Honda that I used to wind up on the interstate, going over 100mph. But that was small stuff. I was a skydiving freak, and Class C rating member of the USPA. But being in the middle of a firefight was the biggest high of them all. Its amazing how everything seems to slow down into about a quarter the speed of normal. Thank God I finally said enough, and gave up my addiction. I used to always be late and zoom around in order to make it there on time. But I gave it all up, thank heavens. I'm 73 and now I even drive like an old fart. No more jumping out of airplanes or riding motorcycles. Believe me, an addiction is hard to quit, and almost all of them are dangerous to one's health. But eventually you quit, or you have a bad ending. Its not worth it.

I don't like to be forced second hand smoke. Same goes with vaping...even more so because most do it everywhere all the time.
Ugh same. The amount of times I get stuck behind smokers who flick their ash on me and blow the smoke back on me is ridiculous. And having to go through a tunnel of smoke to get into places is awful, I think they should ban people from smoking right outside buildings, particularly hospitals!

He can't do the smallest activity without stopping to rest because he gets so short of breath. They both have to take a plethora of medications just to keep living. Both quit smoking a long time ago but the damage was already too great. They are very fortunate to have my sister and I to care for them. If you smoke, you're an idiot. Please stop. Your loved ones and your body will thank you.

Sad to those defending their habit don't see the damage that they're doing to those around them! My grandfather died at 64 from lung cancer, my grandmother died also aged 64 from passive smoking, their 7 children all suffered from serious health issues due growing up as passive smokers.
Exactly, that's what annoys me most, the fact that these people inflict it on others. They don't seem to realise how it can hurt their children, or pets, from smoking around them. My aunt, who was very health conscious (wouldn't even eat the batter off of her fish&chips health conscious!) died from lung cancer, and the drs said it was likely from being around smokers for most of her life. These selfish people basically killed my aunt.

I started smoking when I was 13, I am now 48 years old. was diagnosed with COPD about 4 years ago, I just recently stopped smoking like 6 months ago. Best thing I did, but on the other hand, my breathing has gotten worse since I quit. Since I quit I have gone from stage 1 COPD to stage 2. But I am still glad I quit, I watched my mother pass away from stage 4 COPD, it was the hardest thing I ever saw or went through. Good luck to anyone that is trying to quit, and to those that do not want to, it your right its your choice.
my grandfather 84 years old been smoking since age 7, never have lung problems! he's been smoking since hitler was still alive and now he still strong like a f*****g horse, now tell me what i have missed about "SMOKING DANGER" ?
I believe you missed that not everyone is the same as your grandfather and that most people have the lung reaction shown in the video. Smoking is dangerous for most of the population. Congratulations to your grandfather for somehow living that long.

I could really picture my own lung breathing like that. I thought organs/entrails are kind of creepy and gory, but that doesn't look scary at all.
NONE of our friends are smokers. Anyone who thinks so little of themselves can't possibly think any better of others. DWS (Driving While Smoking) should be illegal.
I quit smoking if people quit polluting the air with their cars (by driving to the 10 steps far market) Just saying... did quit years ago but Pollution is never the less equal harmful. Never quit because it's unhealty, rather because it stinks like hell...
I smoked for about 17 years, and quit 7 years ago this month. I want to tell you I feel better, but I don't. After I quit smoking I put on weight that I can't seem to lose now and I actually feel worse than when I was a smoker, but of course I am seven years older too. I am not telling you that you shouldn't quit, quitting is a good idea, but maybe lower your expectations from how much better it will make you feel. And don't use food as a means to quit, that is what I did and it was a horrible mistake, I fixed my food problem but the weight has remained and it is going to kill as surely as the cigarettes would have.
To all who do smoke, never give up on trying to quit. As Winston (pun intended) Churchill said, "Never give up, never give up, never give up."
I'm against smoking since the age of 5, when my sister(age 3 at the time) and I managed to force our dad to quit! He's now the most health-oriented person I know! So, here's my other smoking story:My friends and I met a 12th grader in the bathrooms a couple of months ago and she was complaining about teachers telling her off because she smokes in front of what is supposed to be an elite high school! And when we told her: "Well, it's your problem you smoke.", she started yelling at us:" How dare you, you don't understand anything rabbits(a slang word we use here for 8th graders, the smallest among high school students), shut up! Don't you dare telling me off, it's not my bloody fault they made this rule!" At this point I exited the bathroom, for I didn't want to argue with someone who's obviously insane. My favourite type of teenagers, really. If I and my friends don't get influenced by others, then why she have to be? It's just that she was a stupid cry baby, lacking any self control!
Wow our lungs look like hugh TriTip Steaks the smokers lungs just look like burnt TriTip Steaks... probably tastes like chicken
I used smokeless tobacco for over 20 years. I highly recommend Chantix - worked for me, even though it's not regularly prescribed for smokeless.
Jesus, I'm a heroin addict who smokes it! Once you melt the gear it turns into the stickiest substance ever so imagine what my lungs look like! I'm 29, been smoking 1.75 grams of heroin everyday for the last 6 years. I also smoke weed in joints but have about 4 a day. Oh my god, I daren't even imagine what my lungs look like. I wish I could just stop, it's ruining my life and I'm paying £60 a day to do it !!
I’m glad I was educated at a young age about this stuff. My dad smoked for 2 years but thankfully quit thanks to my mom. I’m never planning on starting and hopefully I’ll stay that way.

i think people out in this world should abstain from smoking cigarette...that s**t is like consuming poison but in other ways,we dieing slowly with it,i'm a smoker for maybe a year now and this clear illustration has conjured up in my mind how special my lungs are and what a gift i was granted. everyone out in this world should heed advice from this concept and quit smoking cigarette...those who cant are just satanic,i dont care whether y'all agree with my idea to quit or not but to hell with those who dont cherish the life they have, smoke herbs,f**k cigarettes,be self motivated to stay guide oneself away from tobacco...and for most of yall reading this,im a 16 year old who smoked herb and tobacco and i think its healthier being a stoner of marijuana, infact, its more than healthy using weed,GOD SAID TO USE,NOT TO ABUSE,bear that s**t in mind and consider it a life changing quote for all...peace out
I wonder if it ever occurs to the health nuts out there that at least some smokers are perfectly aware of the risks to themselves but still choose to use tobacco products while following all relevant guidelines such as not smoking in public places? I don't tell you that you're obligated to stuff yourself with ridiculously over-priced organic greens or whatever the fad of the week is so howcome you get to judge my indulgences? Seems a bit one-sided to me.
also I have never seen a human lung before 0.0 it's super cool! looks really fragile...
the unfortunate thing is that cigarettes have more addictive stuff than they used to. it makes it difficult, I would think, to stop once you start. I think it would be a better campaign against smoking to not lecture people, but to also ask them to consider how much choice they'd have in the matter once they started... regardless of what a person thinks about various drugs, the companies are making one that restricts your option to quit it more than ever. From what I hear it's definitely not what it used to be like... it's sad that greed has gotten to have an impact on peoples' health.
Cigarettes have been there whenever i needed a friend. Like a friend that says f**k them when everyone pisses me off or treats me stupid And shares romatic after meals/sex/waking/etc. moments with me. But having this friend around all the time isnt as great as it makes me think i feel because with every 'special' encounter the muscus builds, gets harder and harder to clear my throat. I tell myself i need to slow down but it wont let me go now. Its become like an angry vengful (sp) ex-lover that makes me crazy with all the nagging, and constant phone calls. Every single time i needed it, it wasnt there to help me at all. This lover of mine was crippling me, making me spend money on it, when i couldnt rub two nickles together, making me stand out in the bitter cold, killing me. Who needs friend like that?
Wish I never started because it's impossible to stop. Specially when you've got s**t going on in your life. Sigh.
I work (or used to, she had to leave work permanently in Jan) with a 44 year old woman who was diagnosed w/COPD about 2 yrs ago and was put on oxygen full time and is now wasting away and dying due to cigarettes. And she still smoke, while trying to get full disability. Very sad
Quite 8 yrs.ago with the help of a little pill.I had smoked close to 45 yrs. I can't stand the smell of them now.I never thought I would be able to do it.
Bring the law makers to the table and abolish nicotine in cigarettes. This addictive poison is the only barrier between will power and commercial slavery. As horrible as they look, but these lungs should be shown to every child, so they can't excuse themselves with ignorance.
I smoked two packs a day for about twenty-five years. Quit twelve years ago, cold turkey. I still miss it sometimes, but considering how bad my breathing is now, I know I'd be dead if I were still smoking.
I feel sorry for people who have a terrible smokers cough, and they just keep saying/thinking it's a cold.. Who the heck ever had a 3 year long cold? Those people are well in their way towards COPD and slow and painful death. There will be no quality of life either. I smoked from age 12 to age 18, then stopped for almost 8 years. Started again and smoked from 25 ish until I was 42. I'm 47 this year and haven't looked back. I don't even dare to think what would've happened to me if I hadn't stopped :( I am SO much better now. I used to have at least 4-6 chest infections per year, I was sick constantly, or at least feeling it. In the last few years since I stopped, I've had ONE bad cold, that was actually a cold and not a smoking related chest infection. I can not recommend enough that you all stop, who still smoke. It really, really, really, really benefits you in every aspect of your life. Do it for yourself, not for any other reason, but yourself. You deserve to be healthier and happy
TERRIBLE addiction. Was a hippie, used drugs. Was a "disco queen" and used drugs and alcohol. Quit alcohol and drugs fairly easily. Quit smoking 20 years ago but still chew nicotine gum. Hardest of all habits to quit and to this day I don't know why.
The defenders of smoking have a right to their "pleasure" (???) but not to poison everyone else's air. I can smell a smoker from 50 yards away --OUTDOORS!
I quit smoking over 2 years ago, had quit before, but this time for good. It was really affecting my breathing. I knew if I didn't stop, it would kill me. Slowly. I'm a nurse and I see what happens. It ain't pretty, being slowly suffocated to death.
I have told my husband he is being selfish by smoking---he knows it is killing him (we are 67) . It is not fair to me, who will be left without him.
My grandma started smoking when she was 13 and didn't stop until she died at 78, smoked while she was pregnant with my mom and her siblings, smoked in the house with them around, and when we would visit her she wouldn't even be able to spend an hour without having to go outside to smoke a cigarette, and she usually smoked around a pack a day. Obvious health reasons aside, I never understood smoking in the first place, it smells terrible and everything you own will smell terrible because of it. Every single thing in her house reeked of smoke and after she died when we took pictures off pictures from the walls there was a dark brown outline between where the pictures where hanging and the wall from all the smoke.
I used to smoke a pack a day and am down to 1/4 of a pack hoping to have stopped completely by the time I get pregnant. But I honestly care more about the money it saves than how much healthier quitting is supposed to make me. The black lungs look pretty metal tho.
I used Champix 5 years ago and quit, can't stand the smell, hardest thing I ever did
People I dont care if you're judging me because of this. Its my life decision and my opinion. Of you're non smokers, cool. I dont smoke in front of non smokers and always watching out so the smoke doesnt go to someone on the streets, keeping my distance. I'm dealing with my problems since i was 8 yrs old and if it helps me, why should it be considered as selfish? Then I'd rather be selfish cause im looking after my mental health and trying to get better in my sh.tty life. You should have rather asking what my past was then judging. Doesnt matter that i live in a country where piece is or i have family. I had still a rough past.
At least you keep it away from other people. When i worked in a late night drive thru people would literally exhale their cigs and joints in pur faces as they came through. And im an asthmatic and would have coughing attacks in front of them while helping them, but they just ignored it and continued .

Still pass all the breathing test yearly. I could be rich for all I have spent on cigarettes no doubt. What amazes me is my generation, raised in the war years, smoking was the thing to do and all seem to be living the longest. People tell us to die because SS is running out of money and our medical bills are too high. if cigarettes killed you we would all be dead. My medical bill consist of a chest x-ray once a year and quarterly visits with my primary and my thyroid pills. I have spent the last 24 yrs taking care of my mother (13 yrs) and my husband (11 yrs) both who had Alzheimers. I do not have it so i can live my life with my memories in tact which they could not do. I live my life as I have for all these years, healthy, memory in tact, active and happy and a smoker.
I know this is supposed to be graphic but for some reason I don't find this uncomfortable to look at.
died years ago you do know that if a person is healthy their organs get stored in case ANYONE needs them

Load More Replies...I am a smoker, been smoking 68 years (not bragging, just stating a fact). I am now 79 (do the math) and in good health other then thyroid which I have had all my life.
I know this is supposed to be graphic but for some reason I don't find this uncomfortable to look at.
died years ago you do know that if a person is healthy their organs get stored in case ANYONE needs them
Load More Replies...Why do people not make posts about how beautiful these lungs are and how nobody should judge them, like with morbid obesity? To me it's both the same, self inflicted and deadly.
Body image within the context of society is a far more complex issue than a smoking habit, I hope you see that.
Load More Replies...end of story: don't smoke + lungs are really gross-looking either way
I honestly thought the healthy lungs looked pretty cool, and getting to see what they looked like while they work is neat XD
Load More Replies...ive seen this in person back in school. had a actual doctor with preserved lungs show us what this does. on a side note, i am now painfully aware of my breathing.
that's.... great doc... but... I only came in.... about this... rash... can you put... my lungs.... back in.... now?
But your lungs can't just turn back to normal after you quit smoking can they
no its a slow repair process but itll happen the earlier you quit

Load More Replies...Stupid excuse to kill yourself with cigarettes. Oh we all die anyway. Get out of here.
Load More Replies...Everyone has their own coping strategies. While yours is not considered the healthiest method, there are worse methods out there e.g. drugs/alcohol/self-harm. People here seem to be overreacting to your comment, so please don't take it to heart. Stay strong. Be kind to yourself. You are worth it ^ - ^
