Health Blogger Reveals The Reality Behind Instagram Pics
2.7Mviews
While fitness models and their round booties are taking over Instagram, this blogger is trying to show the world that you shouldn’t believe that every Instagram photo represents real life.
Sara Puhto, a 20-year-old body-positive Finish blogger, shares expectations vs. reality pics revealing how much photo poses – a better angle or sucking your tummy in – could change in a pic. In every single one of her Instagram pictures, you can see a striking difference, making it hard to believe they’re the same girl at the same time. “Nobody’s booty looks round and peachy from all angles,” she writes. With hashtags like body confidence, be kind to yourself, and progress, not perfection, this influencer is trying to tell the world that beauty starts with self-love and those ‘perfectly fit’ pics on social media are not what our definition of ‘beauty’ should be. Keep on scrolling to check out some of Sara’s body-positive pics!
Meet Sara Puhto – a 20-year-old body-positive blogger who is trying to show the world that you shouldn’t believe everything you see online
To show just that, she took two side by side pics just seconds apart, the only difference was her posture
“Nobody has abs or a flat tummy 24/7 when they sit down,” she writes
“The other day I saw an Instagram post by a celebrity who had clearly photoshopped their body to make it look more curvy”
“The beauty industry strives off our insecurities, and only shows so few body types, please don’t let this make you hate yourself”
“Clothing sizes have the ability to make us feel bad about ourselves when we’ve gone up a size and feel good when we’ve gone down a size”
“But I’ve realized that it actually doesn’t matter at all”
“Just because someone wears a smaller size than you doesn’t make them a better person or a more beautiful person”
“Clothing size doesn’t define you”
“You are beautiful no matter what size you wear!”
“Being you and having confidence is what makes you beautiful”
“Not what some beauty magazine portrays as beautiful”

This girl used to self harm..happy she's found a way recover &stop channeling negative energy inwards & start radiating positivity outwards
I noticed the scars on her tattoo too
While there may not be a "switch" for us to flip to send energy in or out, we certainly CAN choose to love ourselves as we are and feed ourselves positivity instead of negativity. And we CAN choose to value ourselves according to someone else's standards or according to our own standards of beauty and self worth. I understand there are people with real issues, like body dysmorphic disorder and depression, for whom making that "choice" is not easy or is downright impossible, but with proper help and support they too can begin to love themselves as they are and find their REAL beauty instead of seeking society's approval and recognition. I've seen it in the lives of people I love and know it can and does happen. I know it's not as simple as waking up and "choosing" to be all better, but "choosing" to look at ourselves with loving and accepting eyes is a start that carries great rewards. Society's beauty standards constantly change. Real beauty is constant. And YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Morya, you're right. All those scars on her thighs are too aligned to be stretch marks. Obviously they were inflicted by a knife or sharp instrument. I think she has more problems than naught. Good call!
It's a common misconception that self-harm is only prevalent in teenagers and women, especially those who have body image issues. People of all ages, from all walks of life self-harm for various reasons. I am over 40 and self-harmed for years due to the mental pain from my Bipolar disorder. We need better understanding and more awareness to help reduce the stigma of self-harm (a more preferred term than "self-mutilation").
I am more aware of the issue than I'd like to be, trust me. But tbh I could barely make out any scars, let alone parallel ones. Might be my screen I guess!
Leni, In many cases that could be true. However, there are parallel scars on her left side, her left thigh, and her right thigh. No telling where there may be others that don't show in the pictures. Self-mutilation is a problem, especially with young women, who are not happy with their bodies. WebMD has this article: "Teens, Cutting, and Self-Injury" ( http://teens.webmd.com/cutting-self-injury#1 ) . Its important that more people become aware of this psychological problem. :(

Just because they don't look like stretch marks she self harmed? Kinda seems presumptuous to me.

since when self harming became a negative thing? that's what i hate about humanity.. self-harm means a person needs an honest attention and help and understanding and showing him/her that there's hope. but when people say "omg.. she used to self harm im so happy shes now positive.." its so fked up. its like u dont even care about anything just the aftermath. dont talk like you know a thing about self-harming / self hating or any of those things.
Ummm... I used to self harm. I don't any more. I think that's a good thing to celebrate and be happy about! It doesn't all become fixed just because you stop, but it can be a step in the right direction, especially being open about it. I used to hide it so much and it has such a bad stigma, (like, oh you're only doing it for attention-when being the centre of attention was my idea of hell!) but since opening up about it it's been helpful to the process of stopping. Good on her for being open about it, and yes that's fantastic she's so much better now and she no longer does. Believe it or not Dave Dom, not self harming funnily enough IS a good thing.
Since always. It's a negative thing, buddy. There's nothing positive about being so upset, no matter what it's about, or suffering so much that you'd take a fucking serrated SOG to your arm. And before you say a word, I used to self harm.
I don't know Dave, maybe they did support her while she was cutting herself, if they knew about it. Also, how do you know if they know a thing about self-harm? I don't think they meant for it to be offensive and I don't think they were trying to fuck things up...
I feel like self harming after reading Dave's dumb reply. But in a positive way. Jackass.
Who got hungry when she was eating sushi....no one? O-oh... ok ._.
I think it's actually kimbap.

Japanese food smells like low tide down at the pier. They serve rice (that has the healthy stuff removed) around tiny bits of blech, all surrounded by latex. They have the nerve to serve that with a side order of play-doh and skin graft. To make it more palatable they give you a bottle of jet black salty ink. Super instincts. Gross! ;-P
Where are you getting your Japanese food from?

@fullname was clearly joking, sarcasm anyone? Do you even recognize it when you see it? No? Okay..
I need this. Thank you for sharing. I'm 158cm high and weighs 108lbs. I was once so plump. Don't get me wrong, plump is beautiful but in my case I didn't see it that way. I don't feel I'm beautiful. I tried so hard to trim down. I was successful! From 128lbs down to 108lbs. But each time I see my belly bulge out when I'm sitting down, I feel so alarmed. As if I have to immediately poop or vomit what I ate. I look at the mirror and I still see fat all over but my family and friends would say, you already look like a zombie. I'm so pale. I know it's wrong to feel this way, that's why I started to love myself more deeply. To stop comparing myself with others. Slowly, I know I'm feeling better and more comfortable in my own skin. My boyfriend and family are very supportive especially when it comes to eating healthy. I know I'm on my way to accepting and appreciating my body.
That's fantastic you're starting to feel better! Thinking of you <3
Yes I am. Thank you! :)
But if you are just 158cm and 108lbs, then your weight is perfectly normal, don't worry.
Yes that's my mom always tell me, I have nothing to worry. Thank you! :)
That's amazing progress! Congratulations :D Please know, as well, it's perfectly okay to have a little bit of belly! It's easier to hug people if you have that bit of belly :)
Haha yes! Thank you! 😊
If that's your photo, you are gorgeous, Isabel. I already wanted to say it to you, but then I forgot. :)
Oh no the previous photo is not me. Now I'm using my own photo. Thank you anyways :)
The end of your second to last sentence is what matters. Eating healthy. If you do that, then weight will not be an issue (unless you want to be super toned blah blah blah, in which case get ready to work out hard. Daily). 90% of the battle occurs in the supermarket. Fresh fruits and veggies, and lean protein. If your food is as close to its natural form as realistically possible, you'll be just fine. Hope you keep it up and it all works out for you.
I hope so too. I must agree, the "battle" really occurs in the supermarket. I don't have any goal to be toned, I'm just happy whenever I can wear all the clothes that I want. :P Thank you for your advice! :)
Again, Isabel - gorgeous girl! :)
I dont know you, I have never seen you , but I know for sure that you are perfectly beautiful to so many ppl, you just have to work to realize, recognize and convince yourself that you are...thats what really matters
I love this. Very uplifting. Thank you so much Emy for your advice! :)
Isabel, I'm so glad to read a story of someone who feels so good about themselves (and seeing as it was 2 years ago, I hope you're still keeping it up. However, your use of standard weight and metric height has given me a headache, and I must lie down now. <3
You rock! Keep eating healthy, do some exercise and you will find yourself loving your body, you are taking such a good care of! My personal advice would be, try focusing on what good you can do for yourself! Not what you shouldn't do, what's bad...we all have silly thoughts, habits, self-hate sometimes... just let it go, it does not define you. Btw, for me doing yoga helped a lot to appreciate my body....:)
Thank you so much, I appreciate your wonderful advice. And yes, I think I must try yoga.. or pilates :)
Good for you, Isabel:) Hayley would be happy : D
Oh my God! I hope she is haha! Thank you :)
I have most definitely seen people whose booty is completely round and peachy from all angles. If you don't look like that, it doesn't mean you're not beautiful. (I certainly don't). But it's not like people like that don't exist. Reminds me of this one girl who shat on tinkerbel for having her feet in a certain way she thought was unrealistic and impossible. Now I can see a lot of things unrealistic about tinkerbel, but I myself naturally hold my feet like she had them in that particular picture some times. One of my friends, who lives and eats normally, gets accused of having anorexia because she's thin and shapely. Sometimes it's like people get shamed for naturally complying to certain beauty standards. Just cause you can't achieve a look doesn't mean it's unrealistic. Just stop comparing yourself to other people and be happy with how you were born.
lol I see you point cause my belly is always flat and muscular even when I sit...sometimes I feel like a bad person when I read stuff like this because I shouldnt exist :-P
I have similar feelings at times, I mean I'm not what's considered perfect in any way (my belly is nowhere near flat for example) but in some respects I got genetically lucky (skin, waist, hair, intelligence, kinetic and otherwise) and I'm sick of being made to feel bad for it because it doesn't comply with the average. Like, sorry I was born this way and they weren't, or something? I wouldn't bitch to you about your flat stomach just because I don't have one. Actually I kinda like my soft edges. They suit me. Why can't we just be happy with how we are?
Same with me. :) But that's my profession and would be crazy that I look different than I do.
Why nowadays everyone wants to be beautiful? Not happy, not healthy, not smart, not educated, not compassionate, but beautiful. Not everybody is as smart as Einstein, as well as not everybody looks like a model. Only second part of that sentence triggers ppl. "Just stop comparing yourself to other people and be happy with how you were born".
Enough with the reveals already! We all look like potatoes when we're not posing for a pic, don't try and sell it as if it's news..
I think she was selling veganism.
We get it, you're a vegan...
I don't know why, but internet vegans always seem desperate to me. It's like they're almost a sect.
Yeah having "vegan" written on your ass is obnoxious. Then again I think any words on the ass is an obnoxious.
Yeah. That's what I'm talking about. Try saying something, and a bunch of vegans will come after you, exclamation marks and all. FYI, I've been a vegetarian for many years. Unfortunately, I had some major health issues and had to change my diet. But neither before, nor after that, have I tried to preach my food choices to other people. I respect other peoples intellect and choices too much, I guess. And I also admit there's a chance I might simply be wrong.
There's nothing desperate about letting people know that you don't cause needless harm to animals. It's not a sect, it's a way of living that respects our fellow sentient beings. You should try it!
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
In what way does not eating a certain thing make someone desperate or sect-like. Veganism offends you because it challenges you in a way you're not comfortable with.
Vegan, but still sushi... :')
Vegan sushi! http://fishfeel.org/seafood/
Sushi with stuff like avocado or mushrooms rather than fish.
What is that supposed to mean? I don't think you even know. You don't say that when someone has a shirt from a place they went or a team they like. Why does her being a vegan offend you so much?
Very interesting. Makes me wonder what percentage of what I see is a lie. Probably 75%.
Is is Lorraine. I have a friend who models and let me tell you, she looks nothing like her head shots and other photo's. Some people really do photograph better than they look and it can be the same in the opposite.
Absolutely. Please know that you are beautiful! You don't have to be perfect in every way to be beautiful! Want to know a secret? My nose? It's really big. But would a smaller nose look right on my face? Nah, it wouldn't fit my face shape. While I sometimes focus on my nose and think of it as ugly, it actually meshes well with my face. So, that being said, try to think of your insecurities as such. It's okay not to be perfect, because every little thing makes up something beautiful: you.
Allie and just what makes u so attractive? It's partly your nose! Remember Jennifer Gray from Dirty Dancing? She was so pretty but then she went and had a nose job and it took away her natural beauty. She fell out of the lime light after that.
True! Thank you very much :)
The vegan diet consists in eating cactus?
No, that's called a houseplant. She is eating vegan sushi. Try it! http://fishfeel.org/seafood/
I am amazed by your sense of humor and your understanding of irony :D :D :D
Vegans eat the same things you do other than animal products. Is your diet only meat and dairy?
Look, you can be vegan without flaunting it to everyone and writing it on your butt. We get it, you're vegan. You don't eat animals or their products (you're missing out on a lotta vitamins and minerals!). no need to tell everybody. Because news flash, we don't really care.
"beauty industry shows only some body types" LOL. As if. Since when "photoshop" is body type ?
Thank you, Sara. The world need people like you.
I think she's adorable. I'm not vegan but I might actually follow her.
There is nothing revealing here. The truth in these photos is that neither of any of the side-by-side pics is "truthful". Both sides represent "inaccuracies". The before shots are just as "posed" as the after shots. Also... comparing a photoshopped pic with a non-photoshopped one doesn't really fall into the same type of comparison as she is attempting to make with the other pics. It's image manipulation, the others aren't.
This girl may not be super model attractive, but she's prettier than the girl next door. That intimidation is why the girl next door gets all the boys. Don't be afraid to ask a guy out. I can't imagine too many who would say no to this girl. Generally, guys don't say no even if she's not pretty. If you think finding a date is hard for a pretty girl, try being a pretty boy.
I get the message that they're trying to convey, but in a way, this is NOT OKAY. We need to at least get okay exercise. You can't just be lazy and "accept yourself" if you're in danger because of your weight. If it's not a danger
, another story. But if it IS a danger, DON'T ACCEPT IT. You need to work against it! HOLD YOUR DOWNVOTES, I'M NOT FAT SHAMING. I'm just saying that dangerous acceptance should not be held. I'm doing this for the sake of your wellbeing, k?
Amazing Bodies
DAMN she is fine
You've made me feel better about how I look - thank you
Good 😊 job ;) keep it up girl!!!
My gods, she's beautiful. Good on her for sharing her story, could be instrumental for somebody finding the truth about body expectations.
Sara, if you ever stumble upon this: You're beautiful on the inside and on the outside. I hope the battle fought so bravely will never come back. Stay strong and hope you have all the happiness in the world!
It's a pleasure for me to write this testimony about how i got my Genital Herpes cured a month ago. i have been reading so many comments of some people who were cured from various diseases by Dr .Hazim, but i never believed them. I was hurt and depressed so I was too curious and wanted to try Dr. Hazim , then i contacted him through his email when i contact him, he assured me 100% that he will heal me, i pleaded with him to help me out. My treatment was a great success, he healed me just as he promised. he sent me his medication and ask me to go for check up after 21 days of taking the medication. i agreed with him i took this medication and went for check up after 21 days of the treatment, To my greatest surprise my result came out negative after the treatment, I'm very happy that i was cured and been healthy again. I waited for 3 weeks to be very sure if I was completely healed before writing this testimony. I did another blood test one week ago and it was still Herpes negative. so
Well it reflects reality what people are in real and what they show them self online , really nice
I think there must be a glitch with bored panda. I made a comment a few days ago on this post and there were only 2 other comments. I get a notification saying someone replied to said comment and yet, my original comment is no where to be found and all of these other comments from months ago are here. WTF????????????? This is not the first time I have encountered this issue with Bored Panda.
Getting in shape is not loving your body? I thought it was the other way around. People like this are teaching complacency. "Oh, you have a gut? You should just love it instead of eating right and doing some sit ups." There's such a thing as loving your body and just being lazy. She's obviously a woman who'd been put down or maybe had her own inner demons about what her body looks like. Now she's a champion for people who are just as lazy. Kudos.
the useless beaurty-related MNCs lay a trap for all of us, so that they can earn profits. they show a dusky skin girl sad and a fair girl happy. they create useless beauty standards.
To be quite honest there are no publication with photographs that are not doctored to give people the perfect look. Just put it in an editor wave the magic wand and voila a beautiful you. Hanna-summ...b9f693.jpg
Love this ! Who thinks Man loves a fit and zero size model like girls. Real men Doesn't need those Models ! Good you are sharing and fighting against those fake people.
I would be all kudos except the need to slather Vegan on things.
Great post, we are fooled so much, and it affects our brains, even if we know pictures are lying. In addition: I would like everyone to remember, that you _don't have to_ be beautiful. You can and you have right to feel uncertain, not confident at all. Terrible things may have happened to you, and that's why you may have terrible self-esteem time to time or even most of the time. That's ok, too. You don't have to feel guilty because you have feelings. You don't decide your feelings. You can to some point decide, what you'll do with them. Explore them and face them as calmly as you can - that's enough. You don't have to accept yourself, but you have to try be friend with yourself and accept your lack of accepting . It's very important. https://ihavenoteeth.com/2015/08/13/you-dont-have-to-love-your-body/
Well said
I think she's very beautiful because that smile is radiant and stunning. And she's right. I'm trying to lose much needed weight at the moment, because my body can't take on the extra weight, but I know that I need to ease up on myself and not think I'm doing this because I'm ghastly. I'm fine. Overweight but fine. And when I lose the weight I want, I'll be fine too, just not burdening my back and my knees anymore, which is what I want.
How is this surprising?
And women's clothing sizes in particular, at least here in the U.S., can't ever be trusted. I generally wear a size 6 in jeans/pants. Bought a cheap pair off clearance today that were from the Juniors department... I figured either the 5 or 7 would work. Nope. They run small/snug enough I ended up with a 9. Never worn a so-called "9" before.
i think this is different from morbidly obese. this person is still healthy... the any size argument is stupid. having a small little belly is fine. having 5 large ones is not? do you understand one is a health problem and one is not? of course you dont.
The smile is what radiates.
Thanks for posting this. Due to months of antibiotics my stomach is always slightly bloated. I have a hard time keeping good bacteria in my body. You inspired me not to care how my stomach looks, but how it feels :)
She's pretty either way.
Gorgeous.Nothing more to be said.
Sara, I love this and I love your choice of veganism.
nice cuts on her left side (4th to last photos)
*Stares lovingly at cacti*
Beautiful girl and she looks lovely in ALL her photos.
From self harm to self love. Amazing!
Frankly I found it pretty offensive that she was eating the sushi in front of the cactus. Their cousins watched them be savagely devowered. The horror!
Lol :p
Спасибо ВАМ.
Thank you for sharing this ! Young girl shld know all abt fake poses
She looks so much better in the originals
Being vegan is beautiful!
How do you know that someone is a heartless shallow being..? - They gonna joke about taking someones life away just to make one meal..while they could just eat something else and spare the life of sentient being. - They gonna joke about people who in an unselfish act save animals lives.
I don't necessarily agree with joking about eating meat - which I assume is what you're talking about in this case - even though I do eat meat (No, I'm not interested in an argument about that). But emotional bullying doesn't help your cause and is just as tasteless as those people making jokes.
And how is plant-life not "sentient" life? You got proof of that? How many innocent bacteria you kill by showering every day? How many innocent insects do you crush while walking or driving?
What a beautiful bird of paradise!
Well I thought all of us do this as we pass the mirror after having a shower. Pity we can't hold it all day
I think we do. But I don't see it as a pitty that we can't hold it all day. I would be exhausted all day from holding my breath and would be so focused on my body. I am glad to 'let it go'
We get it, you're """vegan""".

Stop making stupid people famous...Please!?
Dammit, it looks like BP is duplicating my message to all kinds of people again. Then I get all these angry responses from people telling me to stop posting over and over and being a prick. *sigh*
not pretty enough (by instagram standards) to get more followers - make some inspiring BS - profit
I used to weigh a lot more. I lost 60 pounds for my health - not any other reason. People complement me on the way I look (I'm NOT thin by any standards - in fact the doctor wants me to lose another ten pounds, but nope). She looks great in the reality photos.
Why "nope", if doctor advised so? Is it hard to loose that 10 last pounds, or you feeling already healthy?

That's the strangest statement I will read today, Dave. Nontheless, self harming IS a negative thing, because the person is suffering from something that is mentally troubling them, which can also flow over to more physical troubles. Of course we care about the aftermath, but that doesn't mean we don'' care about the process in between. It's just that it's incredibly hard to help someone who has stong emotional problems, because there are thousands of techniques to help, but maybe one or two will actually help. Even professional and skilled psychologists will tell you that it's not a walk in the park. It takes time and effort.
I don't know Dave, maybe they did support her while she was cutting herself, if they knew about it. Also, how do you know if they know a thing about self-harm? I don't think they meant for it to be offensive and I don't think they were trying to fuck things up...

She is just a fat girl. She needs to eat less.
So how do we know that you are not just a fat jerk trolling? And if that is what you consider fat then you have your own issues. Either way she is a person with feelings so try not to be such an a**.

Sweatpants emblazoned with "Vegan Booty" on them is -for want of a better phrase- "boner poison". I mean, I don't care if you're a vegan, but "booty" is not a sexy word. I'm guessing that words across the ass are supposed to be sexy somehow?
Not sure she gives a frig what you think of what she writes on her 'booty'.

Sorry I just don't get it. What is this exactly supposed to show other than someone can appear to be thinner than they actually are by just breathing in? Is that a new trick? Seems to me she is just looking for some self promotion for some reason or other, lets face it ANYONE could do this but they choose not to,so there has to be a reason for an individual to do it.
You just articulated her point and yet you don't understand it? People obsess over other people's photos when they look fit, trim, and skinny, or if they look like they have perfect features. She is posting these as a reminder that most likely those people have the same "flaws" we all have, they are just good at hiding it for the camera. People with body issues need to be reminded that the "perfect" photos are far from perfect. I think this story went right over your head.
Because there are people who don't know it or can't believe it that you can change your body that much and they're going to go into stupid diets or any other harmful things. It's not that difficult to get her point.
@mark to boost other people's confidence who might be struggling with unrealistic body image.

Is it hard to loose that 10 last pounds, or you feeling already healthy?

since when self harming became a negative thing? that's what i hate about humanity.. self-harm means a person needs an honest attention and help and understanding and showing him/her that there's hope. but when people say "omg.. she used to self harm im so happy shes now positive.." its so fked up. its like u dont even care about anything just the aftermath. dont talk like you know a thing about self-harming / self hating or any of those things.

I would so rather snuggle/cuddle/ other stuff the way she was on the left.
No one cares about your boner.
AJ, I know you mean well, but the way you bring it sounds creepy.

Yes,but why does she feel the need to do it in the first place, that's what I don't get.
