Abandoned Hairless Hamster Gets A Tiny Sweater To Protect From Cold
Meet Silky, the hairless hamster who just got dropped off at a shelter after her owners decided to move and had to leave her behind. Despite her different looks, staff at Oregon Humane Society in Portland couldn’t help but fall in love with the pet. And while the hamster is patiently waiting for a loving new home, one of the workers crocheted a special tiny sweater to keep the poor hairless Silky warm…
Animal technician Selene Mejia came up with the sweater idea after seeing Silky huddled in the corner of her cage. The little animal was obviously feeling cold, as due to the lack of hair Silky needs extra warmth. The sweater made a huge difference as now she can wait for a new owner feeling all warm, cozy, and stylish!
“Silky is hairless due to a genetic mutation,” Diana Gabaldon of the Oregon Humane Society told The Dodo. “While she isn’t fluffy like a normal hamster, she is just as cuddly and playful as any other hamster. She does need to be kept in a heated environment, especially during the winter, and have a higher protein diet to keep her warm.”
So if you have a house that’s nice and warm, and believe that different is beautiful… Maybe it’s time to let one special little hamster into your world – and into your heart.

May we knit more? I love to knit. He looks so cold. Poor little thing. I hope he gets adopted. I would love him
That would be sweet. You can contact the shelter via their website: http://www.oregonhumane.org/hairless-hamster-tiny-sweater/

People sometimes don't realize animals get cold too.....everyone needs a soft warm sweater! What a cutie.
So cute! His little eyes are co cute. It was very thoughtfull of you to make this cute sweater for him, but its not exactly safe for hamsters to keep clothes on all the time. Also, hamsters don't really enjoy wearing clothes. but thank you for being so kind to adorable Silky!
She is adorable but I'm pretty sure she is what's aka as a "skinny pig". It is actually bred for sale as a hairless Guinea pig.
We humans have found ways to create special races. But it's not natural. We have found a way to create a dog race that's naked. A naked cat race. A naked rat race. A naked guinea pig race. And there is a naked hamster race as well. This hamster is one of that kind. He isn't sick. He's bread this way. Hamsters shouldn't be kept in a cold or draughty environment anyway. So if he'd be kept in a nice warm living room he doesn't need a sweater. I can't imagine a hamster being very happy with playing dress up.
I wouldn't be surprised if she chewed it off and made a little nest with it
DESPITE of her looks.....BECAUSE of her looks she's adorable. This is going to be the new thing in hamsters.
Like a skinny pig just a hamster instead... Not totally digging it but I can see the popularity in it
