After This Dog’s Brother Died, His Owner Bought Him A Pillow With Brother’s Face To Bring Comfort

Grief is one of the worst feelings a person can experience. Losing a loved one is never easy and takes a lot of time to process. Animals are not excluded from this suffering, too. Recently, a heartbreaking story of two dog brothers, Spencer and his brother, Rocky, who passed away went viral showing how grief can affect animals as well.

(h/t: The Dodo)

These two best friends kept each other company for 10 years. “They had never spent a night apart. Rocky and Spencer slept in the same bed, ate from the same bowl, and always walked together when they went out,” the pups’ owner, Beth Fisher, told The Dodo.

However, their beautiful friendship was interrupted by Rocky’s disease. When the beautiful blonde dog became ill, Beth took him to the vet. However, what at the time seemed like a treatable ailment, turned out to be a late stage cancerous tumor which put Rocky out of options.

“Rocky had to get put down that day. It was hard to process Rocky’s sudden death but we can’t imagine how hard it must be for Spencer to have lost his little brother,” Fisher said.

Poor Spencer was devastated. He was struggling to cope with the loss of a lifelong friend that was taken away from him so suddenly. “Since Rocky passed, Spencer has been getting up in the night to wander the house looking for his brother. And then he starts crying because he can’t find him,” the owner said.

The dog desperately needed something to help him deal with his loss. In the hope of helping him, Fisher’s dad came up with an idea. He bought Spencer a pillow with Rocky’s face printed on it. The pillow initially put Spencer at ease.

“Spencer has been cuddling into the pillow since it arrived, carrying it from the sofa to his own bed. He seems a lot more settled now that he’s got something to cuddle into.”

While the pillow will never be able to completely heal the grief Spencer is feeling, at least it provided him with some much-needed comfort.

this mad me cry I lost our baby kitten last month he was hit by a car had snuck out the house got out and first ever time he left the property got hit by a car and I think whoever did it deliberately sped up to target him to kill him. My Orion, his mum has been constantly grieving him and looking for him since. I got a rescue cat MooMoo to try to help, nothings helped and I still cry for my snowy baby

This is just heart breaking, I read something before about letting your dog go to the grave of who ever has died be it human or animal, seemingly it helps them understand.

We lost our Jack Russell, leaving a grief stricken Labrador who wandered around the house, peering under furniture and every corner of the yard for weeks weeks. Several months along and when I thought her longing had settled, she saw a small brown and white dog in the distance in an off lead park. Our Labrador ran towards the dog ears flapping, with great excitement only to stop halfway and stared at the dog, she looked back at me as she watched the strange dog walk away with its owners. Our Lab turned around head lowered and ambled back broken hearted.

In my similar case, I had an senior dog, then a rescued kitten, only a matter of months together and they bonded, I also lost my dog to cancer, my kitten mourned, month after month, to make matters worse she saw me leave with the dog and return without him, she no longer liked me, one more rescue kitten brought her happiness and for me !!!

I showed my dog the body of my darling departed dog who had been his constant companion since he was a puppy. He sat with him for a bit, just looking at him. Gave him a lick and then walked slowly away. It broke my heart but he understood Billy was gone and it helped him know not to look for him etc. He was still very sad for a long time.

Animals grieve same as we do. I’ve had many pets in the past looking for their buddy who has just passed away. They can’t settle down those first few days poor things.
