Goldfish Owner Makes A Cork ‘Wheelchair’ To Help His Sick Fish Swim Upright
202Kviews
In the most adorable animal wheelchair we’ve ever seen since the doggie wheelchairs and turtle wheels we shared earlier, an image has surfaced of a goldfish in an adorable sling, which people are calling a ‘goldfish wheelchair,’ designed to keep her afloat and upright.
‘Fish wheelchairs’ (or slings or buoys – call them what you will) like these are used to help fish swim upright while they recover from swim bladder infections that make it difficult for them to do so on their own. Green peas can help solve buoyancy issues related to constipation, but infected swim bladders or other issues may require specialized medication. Consult your vet!

Swim bladder infections or constipation can make it hard or impossible to swim with balance

wow! sweet!
I think it's wonderful that someone has thought to invent these things because fish are not always considered as even having feelings by some. And they are so easily disposed of & replaced, which is wrong. Phillip Larking the Poet had obviously considered the same thing when he wrote the following: Living toys are something novel, but it soon wears off somehow, Pass the shoebox, pass the shovel, Mam we're playing funerals now'. Sad but true :'(
i once had a fish i cried for. She was obviously sick a could not swim just like this one. The doctor said he dind know what the problem is and she was suffering like this for a long time. I was trying to find help everywhere a we did everything they told us but nothing helped. In the end she died. Now i am thinking what if she had the same problem (bladder infections) but noone helped us :(
We don't normally study fish in vet school, so you would have to go to a specialized doctor in fish... in the whole spain only one university teaches that, so I guess it's difficult to find...
This is a brilliant solution for the fish! I have a beloved parakeet right now that suffered, I believe, a neurological problem, and can't climb or use her feet. She's very uncoordinated. The vet said it could be about fifty different things (PS I have never had an avian vet succeed in anything but setting a broken leg). She gave me Baytril, a fungicide, and a third prescription. As I expected, the Baytril did nothing. She has a good appetite and I'm helping her to stay hydrated. Just petting her a lot and got her a fuzzy triangular hut for the bottom of the cage to sleep in. But she doesn't sing. The other parakeet, after some days of confusion, comes down to visit her, which is rather sweet. (In my experience if one gets sick, the other will too) I think euthanasia is called for, but I HATE to do it as she's been the sweetest-natured bird I've ever had. I had actually thought of creating a little sling of some sort to allow her to think she's airborne.
Mirka, it seems as if vets are only truly experienced with cats and dogs, sometimes. I'm very sorry you lost your fish, and there is NOTHING wrong with crying for a lost pet. I have had pet chickens die and I weep for them too. You tried your best and you loved your pet; that's far more than most people do. I have a pet parakeet that has been to the vet already but can't use her legs and can't fly. I may try to make a little sling in the manner of the fellow who helped his fish. We can only try. We do everything we can to help our pets, we love them, and if we have to we help them out of their pain. They give us so much in return.
But you tried didn't you? And you cared & that really counts. My Mum used to say 'Just do your best, that's all you can do, just your best' & I think that's a good adage to live by. I have similar guilt feelings about stuff I should have done or not done for my cats & they still haunt me occasionally. But I was always well intentioned even if it didn't always seem like that. I would never hurt something deliberately unless it was to put an end to its suffering. (Like that horrible crunch when you realise you just trod on a snail & now you have to kill it. I hate that because I love snails.) I'm glad you cared, we should have more people like you in the world so here's a **hug** xx
