Kids are problem solvers just like the rest of us. Their approaches, however, are often different from those of grown-ups. Often more creative in their execution.

But that is to be expected and, even more so, celebrated. We continue to scour the internet for instances of kids putting their smarts to a whole new level by incorporating solutions to problems that most find so surprising that it’s actually impressive.

Kids are very literal. If you say "five minutes," you can bet they're watching the clock that has a second hand.

I told my toddler he couldn't walk around with his sippy-cup (reason being he needs to sit in the one place). He soon worked out he could shuffle around on his bottom - technically he was right!

Quinn Answered A Request From The Local Hospitals For Help With Creating More "Ear Guards" To Help Take The Pressure Off Healthcare Workers' Ears From Wearing Masks All Day

He got busy on his 3D printer and has been turning out dozens of ear guards to donate. We need more volunteers to fire up their 3D printers and donate these ear guards to hospitals and medical professionals!

The point is that when people can help - they gladly do. And you have a 3D printer standing over there and the money / time and energy to provide - why not ? Maybe the hospital should provide them - but at that time those things were unavailable in a shop and no machine to punch those things out of hard paper... so this was the way to go...So well done, Quinn

Very early on in the pandemic PAPR hoods were readily available on the used market, but they did not have functional batteries (due to age), and replacement batteries for the respirator power supply were very expensive and in short supply. I whipped up a CAD model of the battery side connector (naturally a proprietary part, thanks 3M), and published the model as well as instructions for adapting them to run on USB power banks. In a genuine emergency, people with skills and tools sometimes just appear.

As an EMT I can tell you that we charge a truly ridiculous amount of money for a ride in the ambulance and yet we are currently well over budget. I don’t know where the money is going to because I’m not an accountant, but I don’t think it’s actual healthcare personnel who are profiting.

Back in 90’s we had parental control on our cable box. I wasn’t allowed to watch certain channels, including mtv. I don’t know why, but I was a master at figuring out the codes, mainly to watch mtv. So they kept having to change it. Years later, my parents wanted to watch a show on one of the parentally controlled stations. They forgot the code and had to have me figure it out for them, lol.

Intelligence can be affected by both hereditary and environmental factors. For over 80% of people’s brain smarts, hereditary factors take the credit.

However, each generation seems to be scoring higher and higher on IQ tests, which is a win for the environmental factors at play.

Turns out, genes and the environment are more closely related than some might think. It’s the genes, after all, that do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to processing the environment.

I own that exact same laundry basket. I wonder how many that machine has cranked out over time. EDIT: I am chuckling at how many folks in comments staid they also have one. I guess it is a LOT more prolific than even I realized.

That used to be a common thing to do. In fact I used to have a laundry basket that had a sticker in the bottom of it with a drawing of a baby sitting in the clothes basket. It was starting how strong the basket was lol

So, it’s a mix of both born with it and raised in it. But you can also live with it and by that I mean train your brain to do brain things better.

For one, eating healthy is a good way of boosting brain power. And all that starts with the womb and continues with breastfeeding.

I remember as a kid doing this where you had to write the word 20 times each. They would put a bunch of words and one of the words was "shirt" I did the same with the letters H, I and T. And then started writing the "S's" down the line and forgot to do the same for the R's. I hand it to the teacher, then go sit back down, teacher brings it back to me and said, "I think you forgot a letter", I look and then notice the mistake lol.

And once the kid starts transitioning away from breast milk, it’s on to fostering healthy habits by teaching them to like good foods.

This includes everything from fruits and vegetables to whole grains to meat and fish, as well as milk. It goes without saying that portion sizes have to be appropriate so that the kid doesn’t grow overweight. Vitamins are also in order.

Very slowly, the door penis began to turn" Bwah-ha-ha - I'm wheezing.

Some little monsters can really climb the jenga tower. At least this is inside. When my youngest grandson was maybe 3 - in the middle of the night he decided he wanted to go outside and play. Everyone is sleeping, he gets up and piles things up until he can climb up and undo the chain lock on the front door of their apartment and wanders off. I forget how mom woke up. If a neighbor saw and knocked or if he left the door open and the house got cold. Somehow my daughter woke up and kind of freaked. She thought the chain was preventing that sort of thing.

I had a Christmas wreath made of jingle bells that I left on my front door all year because this was my son! Holy c**p. He got into things that I NEVER thought he would. He climbed onto the bathroom counter, got into the medicine cabinet, and cut himself because he wanted to shave like Daddy (we got him a Veet rubber "razor"). He pulled the drawers out in the kitchen and made a staircase onto the counter, got into the upper cabinet where the spices were and drank cinnamon oil (he ended up teething on cinnamon sticks; I guess he is just spicy). He climbed a six foot bookcase in order to get into my glitter stash - we found him up there, naked as the day he was born, covered in red and purple glitter. We actually sent him to parkour classes so he could learn how to climb [and fall] safely because it was impossible to keep up with him.

Another way of keeping the brain healthy is by stimulating it. Pique the kid’s interests and curiosity with various activities. Kids up to preschool age who grow up in households with a lot of listening, reading and talking tend to have higher IQs and do better in school. Bonding with a child over playtime is good too as it enhances mental growth and bonding is just good in general between parents and kids.

My daughter’s primary school had a Friend Stop. It’s a bench in the playground that you sit on and someone will ask you to join their game or group. As all the young ones have a buddy who is at least two years above them there’s always someone who will ask you to join in. The older ones get to learn about including others, the younger ones learn how to make friends and the whole playground is mixed up age wise.

Sports, music and other activities that demand attention and discipline also stimulate mental development. However, it’s important to note that what parents like doesn’t mean that the kid should do too, so practicing listening is key.

Every kid’s interests and approaches to learning are different, but parents should also be a guiding force in learning how to learn. Things like ambition, courage and conscientiousness shouldn’t be disregarded in those situations.

In turn, fostering learning and providing them with the tools they need to be able to understand their potential and to make use of their minds to the best of their ability is an important step to take.

In other words, invest yourself into your kid. Because kids left alone at the TV screen won’t do well as they will miss out on active learning and the upside of exchanging ideas.
