24 Priceless Caution Signs These Folks On Twitter Came Across In Hotel Rooms And Airbnbs

Sometimes when you’re going on that long-awaited trip abroad, or you simply want to take some time off and relax somewhere near the countryside – you have no other choice than to rent a place. Chances are everything will be just as you imagined – however, some owners are obsessed with setting boundaries that, at times, might seem a little extreme.

Folks worry about the damages the guests could do, so they set out several rules to protect both the tenants and the owner. Things such as no parties, no pets, no smoking, etc., are relatively expected when looking for a place to stay, though there are times when the property owner decides to cover the whole residence with signs:

This Twitter user went viral for revealing the amusing and sometimes overly detailed caution signs her Airbnb apartment had. The thread received over 11K likes and encouraged fellow online folks to share signs they’ve also come across when staying at a place.

More info: Twitter

Renting a place is always nerve-racking, as you never know what you’re really going to get

It’s natural for hosts to worry about their homes, as there is an equal chance of encountering irresponsible guests. When you’re agreeing to pay an unbelievable amount of money for a few nights, though, you kind of want to feel at home, without having to sleep at a place that is covered with a bunch of rule posters. But Jonathan, the owner of the residence, seemed to have put his own twist on the signs, as it’s quite entertaining to read them.

A Twitter thread went viral after this woman showed her Airbnb apartment that was covered in multiple signs

In total, the woman captured 12 posters, and instead of simply having some sort of instructional directions, Jonathan went for fairly descriptive notes. For instance, with this particular sign, he decided to go all out and share how the damage occurred in the first place. The host revealed that it all happened because of a former guest’s poor attempt at trying to hide the marks they caused with a champagne spray. It’s always nice to know things, right?

Who knows, maybe the owner had a really traumatic experience with his previous guests and decided to secure his safety, as well as his bank account, with a few warning signs? Renting is never easy for both parties, as there are significant risks since you’re basically letting strangers occupy your property, and as for tenants – you could never be completely sure about the reputation of the host. A guest might injure themselves, damage a few things and maybe even disturb the neighbors and the host can literally end up being a maniac.

Again, renting is a business and it doesn’t hurt to be a little bit more cautious, though covering the whole place with notes could be considered a tiny bit over the top. But, on the other hand, how else is the owner going to protect his property if he keeps encountering reckless visitors who don’t respect someone else’s premises and keep spilling red wine on his beautiful soft furnishings?

Jonathan didn’t hold back and even blessed the kitchen with a little photo of him alongside a quite gripping comment, you guessed it, printed out on a piece of paper. Though we can’t witness the masterpiece with our own eyes, knowing that he’s standing next to two famous TV personalities is more than enough. The author of the thread also hilariously provided us with a photo of the printer that was responsible for the gallery.

What’s even more interesting is that at some point, it seems like Jonathan had a little conflict with himself, and couldn’t decide whether the safety of his guests is a number one priority, or whether the bills he gets for the utilities matter the most. Maybe he left it for the visitors to decide, like some sort of a game?

Overall, it seems like the man is great with humor, despite having that many caution signs around the apartment. But hey, I don’t think we can blame him for being careful. Jonathan made a bunch of online folks laugh, which is definitely a sign of him being an outstanding host. Hopefully there was no red wine spillage this time around.

Fellow online users jumped on the bandwagon and shared a few amusing signs that they’ve managed to witness

I think Jonathan is a little too nervous to be running an Air BnB. I realize that guests can make big messes and do a lot of damage, but Jonathan seems full of angst. My friend bought a Florida vacation home and rents it out when she's not using it. The first thing she did was replace all the furniture with no-fuss rattan stuff, remove all the expensive rugs and replace with jute, and pack up all the fragile stuff. Everything is pet safe and extremely durable... vacations are supposed to be a fun time to kick up your heels and relax, not worry about the house. The former owner was using it as an rental, but was so stressed because the guests weren't treating her expensive and fragile stuff right, which is why she sold it.

People do crazy things. I once had a guest who instead of unlocking the little safety tabs on the sides of the window frames to open the windows, he just slammed the window upward as hard as he could. This tore the safety tabs off completely, but at least he got the window open, right? Why did he want the window open so badly? Because he was smoking weed in my no smoking house in a state where weed was (at the time) completely illegal.

The sign involving the durian isn't unusual; a lot of places ask you not to have it since its smell is so pungent.

Apparently most hotels have had customers hang clothes on the sprinkler heads, which break and set off the fire alarms.

Years ago, I worked in a 3rd floor office that was in a high rise apartment building - some floors were converted to offices as no one was renting to live there, but there were still some apartments that were residential. There were two older Asian ladies who lived on the first floor, & they would buy dried squid at the Asian market, bring it home & cook it on the electric burner on their stove, no pan - directly on the burner. The stench would get into the HVAC system & elevator shafts, & permeate the entire building - the smell was like a burning garbage heap. Management did everything they could to stop it, but these two ladies were VERY stubborn about having their charred squid!

I am an Airbnb host, and I'm LMAO. That said, I do have a sign in my Airbnb warning guests to not turn off the gas in leu of turning down the heat, or a $50 fine will be levied. With one weird thing a guest does, it's no big deal. The second guest does it, I make a rule.

The tiny move the chair warning is something I've seen on college campuses also. They would write the computer chairs and computer into the alarm system. You could scoot them but if you lifted the chair or the computer the alarm would sound. Surprisingly the alarm went off pretty often.

Some of these make sense to me. The one stating that Durian fruit and Dried Squid aren't allowed makes sense, as Durian is considered the most foul-smelling fruit in the world, and is banned in Singapore 🇸🇬 and Malaysia 🇲🇾. Labeling shelves with what goes where is incredibly useful and makes it easy to see at a glance if anything needs to be replaced, and that includes salad spinners. The "I'd rather be drinking champagne" mug may have been purchased a bunch of mugs at a thrift store, you can usually pick them up for a quarter each. Maybe someone got it for them as a gift and they didn't like it, so they put it in the rented area. They put up a picture of his matriculation that included soon-to-be celebrities, with a note. WHAT is wrong with that? It's an AirBnB, presumably someone else's home, and not a sterile hotel room. Bombs in fireplaces, maybe not so much. 😊

Hubby and I love Airbnb we use them all the time with no problems. We treat them the same way we treat our own house. I love that I can find pet friendly places that are actually clean and comfortable. It's much nicer to vacation in a house than stay in a noisy hotel in our opinion.

OMG I just about died reading this! HA! All of these signs were created because Jonathan had one heck of a rough time in the past & was trying to avoid repeats. However, Jonathan never really looked around to see how insane things had gotten with the number of cray cray signs. So I agree, divest yourself of this Airbnb, Jonathan, OR (like in my case) get yourself a nice prescription for Prozac. (And yes, I'm a host.)

Have been using Airbnb for the last 3 years, 20+ stays. Never had any real issues. Have stayed in several different states so not all in one area. My advice is treat it like your own home as long as you are a decent human that doesn't destroy their own home, lol.
