Family Friend’s Sons Refuse To Wear Seatbelts On The Way To The Airport, Miss Their Flight
Always wear your seat belt. Always! It sounds like a complete no-brainer—you put it on and that’s it—but some people still have a hard time doing what’s asked of them. In this case, it was a 21-year-old and a 24-year-old who were acting like a pair of teenagers.
Redditor Funsy_bob shared a long and engaging story on the legendary r/ChoosingBeggars subreddit about how they decided to help out a friend and drive their sons to the airport. The redditor went out of their way to do this right before the start of the workday. However, things turned sour when the passengers refused to wear their seat belts.
Well, the redditor wasn’t having any of this. They weren’t about to risk everyone’s safety and their own license just to spare those two the minor ‘inconvenience’ of having to wear a gosh darn seat belt. Drama ensued and, eventually, the two ungrateful youths even managed to miss their important flight. All thanks to their stubbornness and love of arguing. Scroll down to read the full juicy story of how things went down.
Tim Weisberg, a spokesman for the California Office of Traffic Safety, was kind enough to answer a couple of my questions about wearing seat belts. “It’s not only the law, but a seat belt is your best defense in the event of a crash. It literally takes two seconds to buckle up and is a life saver,” he told Bored Panda that this is the best way to convince someone who’s being stubborn about not wearing a seat belt.
When redditor Funsy_bob agreed to give their family friend’s sons a lift to the airport, they had no idea what they were in for

I was curious to know what age group tends to have the most issues with wearing seat belts. According to Tim from the Office of Traffic Safety, this varies, but it tends to be older folks and young adult males. “Common excuses are it’s uncomfortable, they will never get in a wreck, and it’s a personal choice that does not impact anyone but themselves,” he explained to Bored Panda how some people try to play around wearing a seatbelt.
“Seat belts save lives. Nearly 15,000 lives were saved in 2017 because passengers and drivers chose to wear a seat belt. Having said that, more than 2,500 could have been saved if they wore a seat belt,” he said. “The chances of significant injury or death are significantly reduced by buckling up. Whether it’s down the street or an hours-long road trip, always buckle up. Good news is that the seat belt use rate is 90% across the U.S. and even higher in California. But we are seeing that rate drop for rear passengers, especially when using ride-hailing services.”
The fines for not wearing a seat belt depend on where you live. For instance, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety, there’s a sizeable fine of 490 dollars for any teenagers in the car under 16 who aren’t wearing them. Meanwhile, adults get fines of 162 dollars for seat belt violations.
There is only one US state, New Hampshire, that doesn’t require by law for adult drivers to wear safety belts. All the remaining states either have law enforcement or peace officers citing drivers for seat belt violations.
It’s natural that the redditor, hoping to protect their everyone’s lives, their license, and their wallet, didn’t want to budge until the two passengers complied. They didn’t and hopped out of the car, looking to make their own way to the airport.
Just one problem… one of them left a bag behind in the redditor’s car. Now, the redditor wasn’t willing to drive all over town with the bag because they were at work. Eventually, one of the young adults arrives in a taxi to grab the bag, but by then, they’d all wasted so much time, they missed their flight. The two passengers’ dad then called up the redditor and tried to pin the blame on them when it was pretty clear that it was his belligerent sons who were at fault.
You can’t bend the rules that put you and others in danger just because you might be late. If that were the case, everyone would be speeding everywhere. In short, it would lead to utter chaos.
Most redditors agree with this point of view as well. The vast majority thought that the original poster did the right thing. They blamed the two passengers for acting up and for being inflexible. They were practically acting like teenagers.
Californians are generally very safety conscious. A whopping 95.9 percent of drivers in the Sunshine State wear their seat belts. This is above the average of 90.7 percent in the United States. While these numbers are impressive, it still means that a fairly sizeable chunk of Americans avoid seat belts and needlessly put their lives in danger.
Most redditors couldn’t believe that grown adults would act this way!
In the mood for another story about people refusing to wear seat belts? Then you’ll want to check out this recent article on Bored Panda right over here.
Meanwhile, let us know what you thought of the two young adults refusing to wear their seat belts. Have you ever been in a similar situation? In your opinion, what’s the best way to convince someone to just flippin’ wear their gosh darn seat belts?
Should have told the dad it's a good thing they missed their flight; it never would have taken off if they didn't wear their seatbelts on the plane.
The seatbelts are necessary.. but in a more simple way, "my car, my rules" ..I don't want you to eat in my car? Take an uber.. you don't like the music? Take a taxi..you don't want to wear seatbelts? Start walking! my car, my rules..
My father said that maybe they should call seat belts "life belts." He was VERY strict about wearing them, and that is why I buckle mine instinctively. Even if I move my car just 5 or 6 meters I put mine on!
Load More Replies...I don‘t care about a fine, we‘re talking about life and death here. Also, where do people find these morons? That’s not the first story of this kind on BP. I‘ve never met a person in my life who even argued seatbelts let alone refused to put them on.
I met one person. Ironically, perhaps, while he was re-learning to walk following (yes) a traffic accident in which he was not wearing a seatbelt. Broke a couple vertebrae, even blamed the design of the car, but not the fact he didn't wear a belt. (Pre-airbags.)
Load More Replies...A 7 or 8 year old classmate of my daughter had a tantrum about wearing a seatbelt in my car. I would have expected better of the young adults. Good for the OP.
Wait, is not-wearing-seatbelts going to be the next thing of idiots to focus on? Since they probably already are anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers and Covidiots?
In my state adults used to not have to wear a seatbelt in the backseat (I believe they changed that in the last couple of years, thankfully). The first time I drove two of my friends around they didn't want to wear seatbelts and told me how adults don't have to wear them in the backseat. I told them they would have to find another ride then because I wasn't moving unless they buckled up. I wouldn't have been fined, but to me their safety was a priority. They quickly buckled up and thanked me for giving them a ride. If they had insisted on not wearing seatbelts I would have kicked them out! My car my rules.
Simple minds cause simple problems with simple solutions. The driver should have kicked them out of the car immediately when they took off their seat belts without wasting any time. You just do not argue with idiots.
True. You can’t reason with people who have no common sense.
Load More Replies...I'd need to check this, but I would expect adults to be responsible for wearing a seatbelt and for them to be the ones that get fined for not wearing them (I believe this is the case in the UK). The driver is responsible for any children in the vehicle wearing them. When reading this, I was expecting the kids to be 10/12. They need to be told to grow the **** up!
You're responsible for any kids under 14 otherwise according to the gov.uk website its the person not belted in that gets the fine. But as a driver you do have some responsibility for the safety of people in your car and any unrestrained person (or pet) is a danger to everyone in the car, so you should definitely do what this driver did even in countries where the driver doesn't get the ticket. Although I wouldn't have stayed stationary that long, I would have told them to get out and if they refused called the police and told them a passenger in my car was refusing to leave and asked for their assistance. I'm not playing some kind of game with these assholes. You put the seatbelt on like I said or you get your ass out of my car, those are the options. I'm not sitting here like you're a toddler I'm trying to out wait.

Do I understand correctly? He cut the seatbelt und later his Granddaughter died because there was no belt?

Load More Replies...No seatbelt, no ride. These kids, and by kids I mean grown ass men, are assholes, and so is the dad for letting them develop that mentality. I wouldn't have even waited. I'd have just given a choice, you belt up or you get out and walk.
The dad was "ok with it" according to the son, but doesn't mean he *actually was* considering he straight away told the kid to put his belt on. "Do you have any idea how dangerous they are in an accident" made me choke, does he have any idea how dangerous an airbag is WITHOUT a seatbelt on, that thing can decapitated you!!
The one kid is right that seatbelts can do harm. They can break ribs for instance. But it's like with the planes and helmets. When helmets were introduced in war, the number of head injuries went up. Why? Because instead of dying, they just sustained head injuries. It's the same with seatbelts. Sure, you might crack a rib, but would you be rather dead instead?
I was a passenger in the front when we were in a head-on collision. My side of the vehicle was completely crumpled in but the airbag did not deploy. My seat belt definitely saved my life. Broke three of my ribs and left some nasty bruising across my pelvis, but I didn't go through the windshield and end up on a coroner's slab, so yeah. Wear your damn seat belts, everyone.

In the UK it's the driver's responsibility to make sure that all occupants have their seat belt on. Thankfully everyone I have every given a lift to has worn a seatbelt. Though my son recently undid his seatbelt while we were out. The car has the warning light. Pulled over and told him that he can't ever unclip until we have stopped and I say to unclip. He is 6
A six-year-old who has now been taught correctly. I am old enough to remember when seat belts became mandatory for passengers in the back seat - before they were only mandatory for the driver and front seat passenger. I really didn't like it, my sister and I used to play rolling around or laying down to sleep during long travels. We learned and now I couldn't imagine not buckling up.
Load More Replies...I honestly find it a little hard to believe someone would get this stubborn about putting a seatbelt on and risk missing their flight over something this trivial. How do they function in everyday life if they are this stupid?
I just..why? I mean, the seatbelt is for your safety right? The is no harm in putting one on. It protects you. Same for Anti-vaxxers and Anti-maskers
Well you can get bruises and maybe brake a rib. But that's still infinitely preferable to flying through the windshield and dying.

The couple was in a car that slammed into my van, not wearing seat belts, he was ok , for the bag and steering wheel held him in place. But the gal rolled with the bag right into the window, broke her nose. Try to sue me, I said in the deposition that I wasn't at vault for her non-use of the seatbelt. Judge agreed with me. I wonder if they needed to learn that lesson to prevent a fatal one in the future.
Good grief! I'm amazed those, so called adults, behaved that way. The audacity, they're all such ingrates! Their dad can't care about them at all if he's arguing with OP about not wearing seatbelts and leaving THEIR luggage in HIS car. If it were my car I would've booted them out on the side of the road. You can't even call them children, as children would do as they're told. Be happy about their dad not speaking to him anymore, who wants to be friends with such an a-hole?
Most kids have learned and are smarter than these turds. Statistics have shown that wearing seatbelts does save lives more than not wearing them. It's the law in so many places. And I wouldn't be surprised if these same boneheads would blame this driver and try to sue them if they were in an accident. They won't 'get it' until something extreme happens, and even then, who knows. They wasted more time arguing instead of just wearing a belt for a short time. Their level of stupidity is maxed out.
In my country the person not wearing one is the person who gets the fine (except for minors). I still wouldn't drive if my passengers weren't wearing their seatbelts. It's not about fines, it's about safety. I'm a very good driver (if I say so myself), but someone or something else could cause an accident and if that happens I will not be feeling guilty for the rest of my life because they died flying through the windshield while I was driving. Also really? Really really? Readin this I assumed the sons were little kids. 7-ish years old. Wtf
I unbuckled my seatbelt on my carseat (this was the 80s and they weren't complicated) when I was 2. My dad pulled over, took me out of the car, set me on the sidewalk and then started to drive away (rolled the car maybe 6 inches or so). I, being 2, screamed in terror. Never took my seatbelt off while inside a car ever again.
I'm guessing people are downvoting this bc of what he did, and not "against" you.

If you are 24, you shouldn't be looking for a ride to the airport from your dad's friend. You're an adult. Adults also learn to follow the rules in someone else's space. If you don't like it, call an Uber instead of sitting there. If they could afford a taxi to pickup 1 suitcase, they should have taken one in the first place.
Seatbelts have been law for 40 years, how do you not feel awkward by not wearing one? What's next, "I don't do pants"?
Can't understand why the dad didn't give w lift in the first place. Selfish not to wear belts.
I have two rules in my car...seatbelts and no smoking. Ignoring both prevents me from paying attention to the road. If you need to smoke, I'll pull over under a nice overpass and let you smoke all you want, but I managed to quit that nasty habit and I like the fact that my car doesn't smell like stale cigarettes.
It is the driver's fault they missed their flight, because he should have booted the buggers out sooner!

Car slowed and pulled over. "ok, whose belt came undone? Buckle up!" Niece and nephews learned this as youngsters and the lesson has stayed with them. One nephew admitted that he thought for a long time that it was a car feature, not a driver feature. My car, my rules, or walk.
You're a loser for even posting it here. The family is a bunch of douchebags. Move on. What a huge waste of a post!
Owner's car owner's rules, simple. Aside from their stupidity, they also had a huge lack of disrespect. Good for them to miss the plane.
Wow... at that age? I'd have simply taken the keys, tossed their s**t out, and gone to work to email their father detailing what sort of people he raised, and ask how he wanted me to handle the situation going forward.
I wonder what they think about condoms if they don't wear seatbelts XDDDDD
It's a non-story. The solution was to immediately drive back and drop them and their things at their home. Done.
Auto insurance should have a clause that voids coverage for anyone not wearing a seatbelt where required by law. I’m tired of the sensible folks always picking up the bill for the stupid morons. And no, there is no medical exemption. You get strapped down in an ambulance for a reason.
There are medical exemptions. They're rare but they are a thing.

They should be shown photos of people who’ve gone through the windscreen. Even at quite low speeds backseat passengers can kill those in the front seats on their way through the car.
Simple. You get in my car, you follow my rules. Those rules are all based upon the laws of the land / are made to ensure we have a safe drive, they aren’t ridiculous and they won’t infringe your human rights. They are only there to stop us getting killed, injured or picking up an unnecessary fine. You are welcome to walk, you are welcome to use public transport, I won’t be offended if you elect to use another form of transport. You can have a 3rd class ride or a 1st class walk!
FAKE TROLL story, cell phones and taxi cabs in the same story? And u dont knowtheir names?
So FAKE story, Taxi cabs and cell phones in the same story? And you dont their names afterwards? No one has argued about seat belts since 1979. Its the indignant ‘breastfeeding in public’ story/lie
Same goes for having animals in our vehicles. I've lost count of how many times men have argued with me that pets loose in cars is safer than buckling or crating. Sure🙄, having a big loose dog crashing into your "safely car-seated baby" when some drunk T-bones you isn't a possibility?!? Or leaping at a dog that's outside your car and crashing into you as you're driving (happened during one of my 1st rescues after "owner" said she's "good" in cars IF she's in passenger seat). Even the best trained dog can't beat the physics of motion & gravity.
Belts. On. I don't drive unless they are on. Regardless who gets in my car. I've never gotten a ticket and don't plan to for someone who would not even pay or it or understand it's my lic that gets the point on it. It's simple. Put it on. If they were in their car and didn't it be on them. Even in anyone else's car I put mine on. Front or back seat. Hey you might wreck but I'll be a bit safer.
While I do think seatbelts are a good thing and the kids should definitely wear seatbelts, I would like to offer a different perspective. You shouldn’t need to wear your seatbelt in a car you own. The only person’s life you are endangering is your own. Like wearing a helmet when driving a motorcycle. It should be your choice. What would happen if the government told you that you could not be naked in your own house? Most fires happen at night when you’re sleeping. If you’re naked how are you going to throw on clothes and get out of the house in time? Same kind of thing.
Poor mom. Neither son took after her but are very much their father's sons. Here is proof positive that a link exists between genetics and behavior.
Should have told the dad it's a good thing they missed their flight; it never would have taken off if they didn't wear their seatbelts on the plane.

Load More Replies...My car has a special feature in that all seat belts must be worn or the car won't go. We had a couple of stops along the way when one or another got sneaky about unbuckling.
Load More Replies...Hard to not see similar situation with Covid vaccine. "it-s not safe.." bla bla bla
