Copycat Sis Livid When It Turns Out Expecting Parents Were Bluffing About Baby’s Name

Baby names sometimes turn into battlefields for the extended family and for this reason, expecting parents may be less in a hurry to reveal their considerations or even find some alternative ways to deal with it the next time.

At least this was something that this Redditor’s wife did, giving her children funny non-existent names going forward and then, to everyone’s relief, “changing” her mind. Little did the expecting parents know that the man’s sister would not only take the name seriously but would also adopt it for herself.

More info: Reddit

Expecting parents jokingly called their baby “Grenadine” and later were confronted by the man’s sister, who copied it

The woman’s parents were very critical about her first baby’s name, so for her other kids, she would first present some funny self-created name

The woman’s husband found the idea hilarious and the couple “named” their baby girl after a pomegranate syrup

Their relatives didn’t pay much attention, as the woman’s parents had already caught on, while the man’s parents were too polite to say anything

A man brought his story to the Reddit AITA community online when his wife gave birth and finally announced the baby’s true name, enraging his sister, who used the unserious name for herself and accused the new parents of misleading her.

The man explained that with his wife’s first pregnancy, her family was very critical of the baby names she liked. For this reason, the woman started giving her children ridiculous fake names, defending them furiously, and then, to everyone’s relief, “changing” her mind and naming them something normal.

The man thought this to be hilarious and the couple had recently “named” their baby girl Grenadine after the pomegranate syrup. Even though the joke fell kind of flat in the extended family, the situation changed when the woman gave birth to the baby and the new parents announced the true name they picked.

While the new dad’s parents were relieved, the man’s sister pulled him aside and asked why they changed it. The man explained that it was never a sincere choice. This enraged the sister, who had adopted the name for herself and already had her friends calling her by that name due to feeling a connection to it.

The situation changed when the woman gave birth to the baby and the new parents announced the actual name

The man’s sister was disappointed, revealing that she had already adopted the name for herself and accused the new parents of misleading her

The woman accused the new dad of misleading her and told him she felt as if they were laughing about it behind her back. At this point, the man felt baffled and went to rejoin the rest of the family while his sister proceeded to ignore her brother and to refuse to acknowledge the baby going forward.

The man’s post gathered 8k upvotes on Reddit and people judged he was not the jerk in this situation, noting that it probably was a good thing his sister didn’t know the baby name as the parents possibly wanted the name to be one-of-a-kind in their extended family.

While there definitely are good reasons to share a baby’s name in advance, Tiny Beans listed among reasons for keeping the name a secret the possibility of getting one’s name either used by someone in their close environment, or having someone else appear to have done so, even if they actually picked the name independently.

They also added the reduced likelihood of objections when revealing the name only when the baby is born.

If anything you should be upset that your sister was actually trying to "hijack" your daughter's name.

My guess is that sister is upset that the name was meant as a joke all along and now she has chosen a joke name she feels humiliated. The fact that she was taking the name that she thought was going to be the same as her niece Is a bit weird and worth trying to talk to her about.

I have a twin who openly transitioned FTM when 22. He choose a male first name with exactly the same first three letters like his old, dead female first name, think "from MAR...IA to MAR...TIN". His reasons: - I'm used to the old name myself and still trip up, so will others. I'll make it as easy as possible for my family. - Makes it much easier to sign something (oops, just caught my error in time) and to introduce myself ("Hi, I'm Mar...tin" is much more unsuspicious than "Hi, I'm Mar... Justin.") and have to re- learn only a small percentage of my full signature and - my initials stay the same. To me it totally made sense.

And the MTF-sister of the author is, IMHO, just an unsure attention seeker. There is a Sea of Names in the world and she really, really couldn't come up with an "own" name? Come on. 🙄

Sounds like Sis was using the name in hopes of being able to say that the baby was named after HER. That narrative makes the most sense with her reaction

Either that, or some other really weird reason... And pushing your sibling(s) to name their child after you is -really- creepy.... If you're going to lie and say the baby was named after you when she wasn't (and she wouldn't have been, even had the parents used the joke name, because they picked the baby name first), why not just lie about the baby's name too? One more lie wouldn't be anything to get especially upset over....

There are trans people who suffer from body dysphoria and only want to fit in and have peace, and there are narcissistic trans cosplayers who hop on the trans train to get more attention. The first type of trans people transitions quietly and tries to get to terms with themselves and just find a way to be comfortable while still being careful not to hurt others in the process, the second type feels entitled to use any possible chance to stir up drama and then demand validation. The first type takes responsibility for their emotions and situation and work on themselves to get better, the second type demand that everyone caters to them and their drama. This is a prime example of the latter. SIS hears which name was chosen for her niece and creepily settles on that name with the excuse it 'vibed with her' clearly thinking everyone has to just accept that. Then she learns it wasn't the real name and now pouts because no one told her and she can't try that again without looking like an AH.

My str was opposite of this, when she had her last baby, (there is a 20 year difference between my girls and her daughter). While she was pregnant, she refused to tell anyone the name because she didn't want someone to "take" the name. Fast forward to after the baby was born and we finally found out her middle name, I made a comment, "how sweet her middle name is the same as my youngest" and boy was my sister pissed at me. I ended up saying what the heck. I've had the rights for 20 years. We laugh about it now.

I know for sure if I picked a name for my baby and my sister suddenly decided to change her name to be the same as my baby’s I would be really really upset. If anyone has the right to be angry in this situation it’s the OP, the sister didn’t communicate and just started to use the name, what if it HAD been the kid’s real name? His sister need to see a therapist and he needs to have a serious talk with her about this because it’s highly abnormal at best.

I don't find Grenadine really that weird, not sure what the sisters issue is if she has been using it amongst friends already then surely if it was a joke name her friends would be ribbing her about it. As to stealing her nieces name though...well I think she needs therapy, that's not right, at least not in this context. I'm playing a huge variety of contexts in my head and nope, can't find one that this works with.
