Tired Of Customers Ignoring Their Polite ‘Please Wear A Mask’ Sign, This Store Puts Up A New One And It Gets Dark Real Quick
InterviewThe coronavirus pandemic is taking its toll on the United States. There have been so many new confirmed cases of people infected with Covid-19 in the past couple of weeks that some states have paused rolling back quarantine restrictions. However, in other states, some businesses have reopened. Some of them ask that customers wear face masks when coming in through the door.
However, wearing a mask is now a political issue in the United States. Some Americans refuse to wear them because they believe it limits their freedom. But tired of people coming in without covering their faces, vintage clothing shop Antique Sugar in Phoenix, Arizona got the world’s attention after it put up a hard-hitting sign about wearing face masks.
Scroll down to have a read, dear Pandas. A small warning, though—the sign gets dark really quickly. Co-owner of the store Annamarie Sanchez told Bored Panda that she and her best friend, creator of the sign, and fellow co-owner Sarah Bingham have been answering thousands of emails, voicemails, messages, and comments. Scroll down for our full interview with Anna.

The Covid-19 situation in Arizona is very serious, so it’s natural that businesses want to protect their employees and other customers

Putting up a nice sign didn’t work for Antique Sugar…
…so they put up a more blunt sign that gets dark very quickly

Anna told Bored Panda that the response the sign has gotten has been huge. “I’d say the mass majority is totally positive. In fact, most of our voicemails and emails are from the elderly who are thanking us for giving them a voice. This sign was never intended to go viral. It was posted to a personal FB page and someone shared it and so on and so forth. The amount of love we’ve received is incredibly overwhelming and unexpected,” she said.
“As far as what it’s like to deal with, holy [crap]. It’s been a 24-hour job on top of our regular functionality. Very emotional but in a good way. We’ve been in business for 10 years and we’ve never dealt with this amount of immediate attention. Our IG has grown by almost 3k followers in just 24 hours. So you can imagine the messages we still need to answer.”
Anna added that there have been some haters but she and Sarah have learned to brush off their comments. “These people were likely never to become customers anyway. If any of our existing customers want to choose to not come back, that’s okay. We didn’t mean to offend anyone. Just get the damn point across. We’ve been threatened with lawsuits, with reports to the ADA for discrimination, we’ve had our business get threatened to be burned down, we’ve been called names. Whatever. No sweat off our backs.”
Not everyone was happy with the sign. But Antique Sugar had a snappy comeback
Antique Sugar reopened on June 1 and thought that a simple, pleasant sign, thanking people for wearing masks, would work out just fine. It didn’t.
The co-owner of the shop, Sarah, got into an argument with several customers who refused to wear masks inside her store.
“They’re like you know the masks don’t work right? Or something about carbon dioxide retention, thinking that it’s bad for you to wear the mask or that you look stupid wearing a mask,” Sarah told ABC15 what the customers said.
“Nobody likes wearing a mask. This isn’t fun. It is uncomfortable, especially here in Phoenix. It is hot, but it’s literally the smallest gesture we can make,” she explained.
“I can’t put my employee and customers at risk. Some people are trying to make this some kind of political statement but people are not dying along party lines,” Sarah said.
Some people completely agreed with the sign while others thought it was wrong to put it up. We’d love to hear your thoughts about it, too, dear Readers, so drop a line or two in the comment section below.
Here’s what some other people said about the sign
A family member of mine is a trump supporter and refuses to wear a mask. She found out she's asymptotic and gave the virus to people she worked with. Two people have died. Her daughter reported her. This is a second cousin of mine and thank god I didn't really know her She was forced into quarantine and still doesn't think she did anything wrong. People that knowingly spread HIV go to prison. Just saying.
Just wear a f*****g mask, f*****g drama queens. People can't abide the slightest discomfort.
Do you want to have the coronavirus or not? Plz, it's for your own good. Yes, it is uncomfortable, but the COVID-19? PEOPLE!

All we ask is : wear a mask. It's a small thing to do, and it will help to stop this pandemic, so that people can get back to their jobs and make America great again (and the rest of the world too, of course)
the very deeply-morbid side of me thinks: "one way to make america great again is to let all the stupid / entitled people kill themselves off via their own stupidity / entitlement". Horrid, I know... but seriously, their hypocrisy is getting dull.
Load More Replies...Sadly, Arizona is seeing a surge because residents didn't take the virus seriously during the first stay-at-home order. People regarded the restrictions and CDC guidelines as friendly suggestions. They mobbed grocery stores and held large parties, among other things. Very few people wore masks or knew what 6 feet looked like. It was almost as if the virus didn't exist in our state. To make it worse, our governor left it up to each municipality to enforce the restrictions at their own discretion so it was never enforced. He also declined to make masks mandatory because he genuinely believed Arizonans would make the responsible choice for themselves and always wear masks in public. Our state brought this surge upon ourselves. For the record, not all Arizonans were careless. Many of us respect the health of our fellow residents.
This is like arguing about a " no shoes no shirt no service " sign. The audacity! However, looking at some other posts maybe I need to lower my perception of audacity.
I'd so work there. Where I work it isn't hard to spot someone before they come into the office an need to have a mask on. Or the warehouse factory floor. But I had some one literally sneak in my side door while I was working. Two feet away. No mask. To ask me a question. I was arm deep in a machine and trying to lean away an this d**k kept coming closer. I screamed "go to the office around front". He left. Another d**k had a mask on. Came up to me for a pick up. Ingnored the office. And to ask me a question PULLED HIS MASK DOWN TO TALK A FOOT AWAY FROM ME! Again I'm on a machine an cant just run away. I managed to get my nose up under my tee shirt collar an tell him to go the office. Oh and COVER YOUR NOSE TOO WHEN TOU WEAR A MASK!!!
New Yorker here. We are all just used to it by now. It's the new normal, it's not a big deal. Just wear a mask so we can control the pandemic. Jesus.
People drive me up the wall who refuse to wear a mask.. get the F**k over yourself people! I am a hairstylist and I have to wear my mask for 8+ hours during my shift. Do these a******s think that I enjoy wearing my mask? NO. I drip in sweat because I'm so damn hot underneath them, I can hardly breathe some times due to my asthma and they're just annoying but I do it because it keeps myself, my team and YOU safe. Oh, boo boo, you have to wear a mask for MAYBE 20 minutes when I'm cutting your hair.. take your crybaby a*s somewhere else then. People these day, all they want to do is cry, b***h and complain about to the most stupid s**t. "Wahhh, I have to wear a mask for a few minutes. Wahhh, ima be some petty a*s because I'm being told to wear a mask" - these people are so ignorant and stupid. I hope they get the virus and I hope their kids get the virus because they sure as hell don't make their kids wear them either.
Omgoodness nothing in the world has ever gotten me so heated except animal cruelty and this whole mask thing. The cry babies just need to go.. wear a f*****g mask or GTFO, plain and simple. On a more positive note, thank you to those who do wear a mask and have common sense.

Nursing home residents and families have been forced to be apart for months. Wearing a Damn mask is the least you can do to help.
They're worse than 2 year olds having a paddy because they don't want to go to bed or eat their greens. That's how they look to the rest of the world, but, they don't care, because the rest of the world isn't America, therefore we don't count, for anything.
Think of it like this...you don't have to brush your teeth. The mask will also keep your bad breath from getting out offending others
Let the muricans do whatever they want, and the rest of the world can quarantine them in the US, not letting them in anywhere til they get a a smidge of sanity and stop their nonsense... Getting some education while at it, probably would not hurt that much either... Wear the damn masks, unless you want to kill someone else by giving them covid!! It should be considered manslaughter if someone gets covid from you and dies, just because you refuse to be sensible and wear a mask...
My grandpa used to say that stupid people live forever. As I've gotten older and older, I'm tending to believe it. (And no, I'm not saying that people who live to ripe old ages are in any wad intellectually compromised- it's an adage).
In Taiwan, people are used to wearing masks anyway. We are much closer to Wuhan than the US. No lockdowns, seven (7) dead out of a population of 23m. People here simply cannot understand why some Americans refuse to wear masks. I tell them, They support Bunker Baby, which means they have very few active brain cells.
I'm glad you glad you feel great, what about the person next to you who you unknowingly may infect
When wearing a mask all the particulates that come in contact with the mask, also comes in contact with the front of your clothes.
Wearing a mask is all about science and having a higher IQ than a watermelon.

It's like vaccinating for chicken pox to prevent small pox. I too have heart problem due to complications from tuberculosis. Having barely survived one infectious disease in my life, I'm not going to f**k around with this one. Wear a mask.
