“They’re Asking To Hire A Stay-At-Home Parent”: Job Listing For Nanny Goes Viral For Having Ridiculous Requirements
If you have ever been looking for a job, you’ve probably come across AT LEAST a few job listing ads with an incredibly long list of requirements and an unreasonably low salary. We’ve all been there, and it’s always annoying. Though if there were ever a contest for the most ridiculous job postings with the most ridiculous salaries—I have no idea why there would be such a contest—this ad that recently went viral on Reddit would definitely be a top-scoring one.
A few days ago, a user on Reddit shared an interesting job listing ad they happened across. To be more specific, the listing was for a nanny, though the list of requirements and responsibilities was borderline offensive. And the salary for the job was even more ridiculous—they were offering $13/hour. “Be a very specific age, have a bachelor’s degree, be a nanny, housekeeper, teacher and personal shopper…and more, all for $13/hr,” the redditor wrote in the description of their post.
This job listing ad attracted the attention of thousands of people on Reddit

If the job description seemed too long and you were too lazy to read it, let us sum up it for you. This person is looking for a nanny for their two kids, aged 8 and 13, who must have a bachelor’s degree, a car, must be good with pets, must be bilingual, willing to travel, could cook, help kids with homework, do groceries and personal shopping, and take care of the house. In addition, the nanny must be from 25 to 30 years old.
Many people on Reddit found this job listing crazy, ridiculous, or even mildly offensive. In just two days, the post gained almost 40k upvotes and received over 2k comments.

Share on Facebookmaybe they missed a 0 or 00? lol 13/h.... unicorns are more realistic than this.
I’d be more inclined to believe in the unicorns than this being a decent job..ye gods
Load More Replies...any person with a bachelor's degree probably wouldn't be a nanny, first of all. secondly, you are paying this person 13/h for basically raising your child?
I was a nanny after college. I had a bachelor's degree. But I got paid a decent wage. A lot of the nannies I knew had degrees. We were trying to figure out what we wanted to do, or were having a hard time finding an entry-level job in the area we wanted. It can be a really good job. But this offer was insane.
Load More Replies...The job would be fine...for a realistic salary, which also includes extra, such as allowances for driving etc. 13 dollars sound not merely too little but rather insolent.
She just described a mother /father. So, basically she needs a mother/father for their kids. Why not give them for adoption already?
Extent of duties and low pay aside, I was surprised by the narrow age range as a requirement. "Happy 31st birthday, you're fired."
Right...I mean, what is the difference in a 24 and 25 year old? These are some weird people....
Load More Replies...Why is no one talking about the super weird and super narrow AGE requirement? If they could find a 40-year old that could do all this AND accept $13/hr, why on earth would they turn that person down??
Because a 40 year old is less likely to be perky and attractive. And dollars to donuts it was dad who wrote this ad, not mom. And in the highly unlikely chance that it's genuinely more innocent than that, are there that many 40 year olds with a masters degree who would accept $13/hr?
Load More Replies...Average wage for someone with a bachelor's degree is $60k/year. $13/hr @ 40hrs/week comes out to $25k/year. Someone has completely lost touch with reality, and that is before adding 7 days/week on-call availability including holidays
Delusional rich parents trying to introduce slavery again.
Nah, rich people know what nannies cost. They grew up with them, after all. And they'd probably have a car or two to spare for transportation, if not a driver. These are middle-class wannabes trying to get the trappings of wealth without understanding how much the wealthy truly spend on their lifestyle.
Load More Replies...So housekeeper, home school teacher, pet daycare, be the mom and dad, driver, coordinator, and everything else. Only thing missing is "must do it all with a smile". For $13 an hour.
I'd love to know if they actually got a parent for the kids, because they are totally abdicating all their duties as a parent.
I kind of understand it. If both parents work a lot and they want to use their free time to be with their kids not doing housework, but 13 dollars an hour?! that's less than minimum wage in California. It's pretty damn ridiculous.
The age of the kids killed me. At age of 13 a kid should be able to go to/from school, does her/his homework on her/his own + help younger sibling. Helping with shopping and household should be normal on daily base for both kids in their age. 8 + 13 years old kids IMHO don't need any nanny at all. Or the US is different world from where I live in the Czech Republic 🤷🏻♀️
They need someone to drive them at the very least.
Load More Replies...Seems pretty okay for a nanny job, honestly, but the pay is ridiculous. It should be at least double that. Not sure what the “basically raising kids” cracks are about, yeah it happens that nannies partially raise kids when the parent(s) are busy all day. That’s why they’re nannies and not babysitters.
There was one I saw a couple of years ago that was even worse. Ridiculous. Not really a problem, munus the on-call sick days (and 11-7 for school-agers? Was this just for summer? Then when would they be home for sick days. I smell a fake post.) until the grocery shopping. Then it got worse. In college, I watched 2 kids before where it was a wonky schedule and I didnt have both kids the only time, which was misleading, and it was a split. They had me do dishes and their laundry. I told them after one time I wasnt comfortable with adult laundry. But the kids were difficult so I lied at the end of the school quarter and said I had a bigger school load than expected so I had to quit.
This is basically my current job, except I work more hours for less pay than this...
I see ads like this all the time on care.com. I am a nanny and the most I've ever worked is 45 hours a week. I know MANY nannies that work 50 to 60 though. I have always had to use my own car. I only have a 2 year degree. The most I have ever made was $17/hour.
I have a gut feeling they will not be willing to pay overtime..
Load More Replies...After leaving this position the Nanny would be eligible for Alimony !
"Come on, how should i live without the epidemiologist who live in my basement for free to iron my facemasks? I'm too good with him, sometimes i throw him some nuts and he's perfectly happy with his job. It's really hard these days to find good slaves, uh i mean good employees."
OOPS I made a mistake, these kind of person probably don't wear masks, they are above a global pandemic.
Load More Replies...Yes the offering is unfair but I graduated college into the last recession. The job I has lined up disappeared. I worked two, sometimes three jobs for less than that. This one with kids that are 8 and 13 (who can mostly do their own thing) doesn't sound that bad
only u must have your car, chauffeur them around, clean up after them and likely tutor them half the time. I think just getting a tutoring gig would match up that pay.
Load More Replies...The guy should just get a new wife that way he doesn't need to shell out an money and he can sleep with her tooo. I am surprised that theirs no requirement smile requirement or hip to waist to bust requirement in their as well.
This is the reason why people shouldn't have kids if they aren't capable or willing to raise them.
You have to be good with pets as well like wtf hire a pet sitter one person is not that multi-skilled surely I mean what's the bachelor degree in 🤣
Must also be willing to sleep with my husband when I am too tired to do so?
Pfft s**t post this is one of the most reasonable I've seen. Still got nothing on that one for a live in baby sitter who at end of it all would actually have to end up paying the parents to watch the kids which is still the most stupid posting I've seen to this day
With help like that, I could get another job. Maybe even enough to pay the help...
I can imagine that in some parts of the country, this might not be outright insulting. For example, a small town in Arkansas or Oklahoma. Stingy, but it might get a nibble. But I think in much of the country, especially cities, it's WAY OFF.
This seems a bit ridiculous but am average nanny should be able to do some of this stuff I guess. I'm not entirely sure l
deja vu all over again: https://www.boredpanda.com/babysitter-ad-slave-conditions-low-pay-choosing-beggars/
Must be willing to work with a fat and lazy butler and care for a seven-foot carnivorous lizard.
In most programmer jobs, they ask ridiculously amount of skills and years of experience
I've seen ads like that for programmers. They want people with 10 years of experience but they are paying entry-level wages. So glad I didn't go into programming!
Load More Replies...That is a reasonable job description for a full time nanny, except I got paid $11 an hour in 1987!!
Totally fake. Not 1 mention of Covid-19,or the importance of wearing a mask. 2 criteria which would be mandatory in any help wanted ad in 2020, especially one looking to hire a baby sitter.
An 8 year old should not be home alone and a 13 year old should not be expected to parent a sibling
