A Florida Deli Was Flooded With 1-Star Google Reviews After Its Viral Hiring Sign Drew Huge Backlash
The pandemic hit really hard, lots of people lost their jobs, and many businesses had to close or adapt to the restrictions that have caused some damage to their finances. Now that more and more people are getting vaccinated, the restrictions are lifting up and businesses are opening up their doors again.
But weirdly enough, they can’t find employees to work there. Economists observe a labor shortage even though so many people became jobless, but the numbers show that there are more open positions than people willing to enter them.
So businesses have to become creative and unique so that people will want to go to them. However, a deli in Florida failed miserably, putting up a sign showing what wage each position should expect, except the positions were vague descriptions not saying much to a prospective employee.
More info: Twitter
A Twitter user came across a sign at a deli in Florida and was not impressed by how it was trying to hire people

Twitter user I.G.Y. Azalea shared a photo on Twitter of a sign at Jason’s Deli in Melbourne, Florida. In the caption, they expressed that it really didn’t sit right with them. The tweet went viral with 75k likes and 3.3k people got involved in a heated discussion.
What sparked the debate was the content of the sign. The wording it used to describe who will get a lower or a higher salary was quite offensive and unfair.
Jason’s Deli in in Melbourne, Florida was offering minimum wage to a “mediocre person” and $15 to a person who performs better than the owner themselves

The heading of the sign states “Now hiring all positions,” but the deli didn’t list the positions. Instead, they put some vague personality descriptions, putting a value on them. Those who would get minimum wage, which is $8.65 per hour in Florida, were described as ‘mediocre’ people.
A person with no experience but willing to learn would get $9 per hour and a person with some experience would get paid a dollar more.
The COO of Jason’s Deli explained that the reasoning behind the sign was to reflect that there is room to move upwards in the company

It seems that the requirements grow disproportionally faster than the salary offered as $12 per hour is offered to a person that is “better than most, brings zero drama, works like 2 people.” If that person is expected to work like 2 people, wouldn’t they be paid twice as much?
What really caught people’s attention was the last description and the salary offered. To a person who “outshines and outperforms the owner,” plus does everything else that was mentioned above in the sign, they offer $15 per hour.
Which is laughable because when you do the math, an employee working 40 hours in a week would earn about $31k a year. But this could be achieved only if you became an extraordinary employee, and it is not often that people working in fast food restaurants put that much effort into their jobs as they usually are just a temporary stop before starting a career they are passionate about.

Jason’s Deli President and COO Ragan Edgerly spoke to Insider and told them that the manager who put up the sign just wanted to show that with hard work, you will move up; however, he also added that “the descriptions used do not accurately reflect Jason’s Deli’s hiring practices and the sign was immediately removed.”
What do you think of the sign and why do you think some owners still don’t make a decision to just offer bigger salaries instead of complaining about the shortage of employees? Leave us your thoughts and reactions in the comments!
People that saw the post were outraged by the unachievable requirements and inadequate salaries offered

Every situation like this one should be brought up to light so people could boycott these places. You treat your employees like sh!t, you go out of business.
THIS is what I agree with: a free-market response to evil corporations. If people hate them and you want benefits, I fully support your unions, strikes, and resignations to attempt to force the big companies to give in to your demands.

We had someone come and do a lecture on multitasking, said it was a myth and that one out of a 100 people can actually do two things at once. If you attempt to multitask then you just end up doing two things poorly.
Load More Replies...Well if you get $15/h for outperforming the owner, then that must be the sallery that the owner pays himself, right? Otherwise the owner must admit that he just exploit his employees and either pay himself more than his work is worth or pays the employees less. If the business is so badly run that it can only generate $15/h for the owner, then it is clear sign of his incompetence, and you would not like him as your boss anyway.
Owners are paid differently, at least in my country. You take the minimum tax free wage and you also take a dividend at the end of the financial year, it will vary depending on how well you have done, tax rules change annually If your accountant is good it will be the maximum amount before tax can be added to the number. Being paid by the hour.....thats for the staff. (unfortunately)
Load More Replies..."If you would like to make a career out of working for a deli, you have bigger problems than your hourly wage." That irritates the heck out of me! My favorite Subway was often crewed by a man in at least his late 70s, who ignored the official uniform requirements and wore a white pointed paper hat instead. The man was clearly a lifelong 'sandwich artist' and genuinely took pride in his work. I swear every sandwich looked ready for a press-photographer.
yup, that comment should. shows a person how far down the hole, folks that think like that, are willing to descent.
Load More Replies...The 12 $/hour one annoys me even more than the 15 $ one. Do they seriously expect anyone two do work worth two people for 12 $?!
If you "work like 2 people", you get $3/hr more than the guy who just shows up and puts in his hours, instead of the wages of two people. Twice $9/hr would actually be a living wage, but well. No living wages at that place.
Load More Replies...As soon as businesses discovered they can give 39.5 hours and no benefits at min wage (impossible to live on where I'm from since rent starts at 90-110٪ of monthly min wage) capitalism died.
When did this change? I though the cutoff was 30 hours: hired to work under 30 is part time and gets limited or no benefits, and hired to work 30 and over is full time with full benefits.
Load More Replies...Such unrealistic expectations lol. No one will possibly care for your business the way you do, that is the reality. People naturally mind their own business and then yours if you're paying well enough. This is why companies give out stock options to people they definitely don't want going to competitors.
Bro if you're outperforming the owner then go start your own business. Why would someone owe you their business? Why, if you are so hard working and capable, would you settle for working for someone else?
You do realize it takes thigns like money to start a business a work ethic in and of itself doesnt lease space or pay for permits . You know this very basic information already dont you?

Sometimes (actually, it was not so rare during pandemic), owners lost their money and their businesses. I wonder if that people who said "if I'll outperform the owner I should get owner's salary!!1" would like to share some of the former owners debts? :)
1. The business can be declared bankrupt and erase all debt, the owner as a person is not liable. 2. If you have a business you're not supposed to spend all the profit on yourself but save and reinvest. 3. Insure your business. In my area some pubs renovated during the pandemic and some closed down. Guess which ones were run better.
Load More Replies...Typical manager salary at a Jason’s is $47k...not much more than a good employee.
That will work out to the equivalent of about...$15 an hour, as I’ve never known a manager to work less than 50-60hrs.

Minimum wage is not supposed to enable you to live on your own. Whoever told you it was lied to you. Minimum wage jobs exist to give you experience in the workforce. Not to enable you to live in your own apartment with a 60" tv, cable, and a $1000 mobile phone, eating steak and drinking cabernet, and/or covering a truck payment. Capitalist society is set up this way deliberately to insure that young adults are forced to learn positive socialization skills by living together with others, sharing expenses, and dealing with real-life social problems *before* having to deal with them in a more professional corporate or business setting. Your Commie parents raised you to believe that having any job should pay enough to support you, but this is only true in Communist countries. If that is what you want, emmigrate to China or Cuba. Otherwise quit complaining and find some people to rent a house or apartment with.
one of the biggest problems in the USA is the lack of good wages for most jobs. good meaning living wage. more than enough evidence supports this. recently, the former president trying to hire the business owner of Hardy's as Sec. of Labor.* he is on the record for complaining that he couldn't prompt good employees because they would tell him that the nominal amount he paid for the 'advancement' (more responsibility, longer hours, cheaper per hr wages) because they'd no longer qualify for government assistance like healthcare, child care, or food stamps. his answer was for the government to stop being so GENEROUS. he couldn't see that being on welfare was better than working at Hardy's. he isn't the only example. the total lack of connection to reality that exists in the country. simple respect is needed. by businesses, govern for citizens and the workers for themselves. [also: the brain washing is rampant.]
SomI have to assume that the last one would be more than the owner makes because you'd basically be running the place.
I'm paying my workers $20~$30 an hr, depending on their skill set. When they start I always asked them what makes them happy and comfortable. I rather work with people who enjoy their job and feel happy with the money they make! And, yes. The company is In the US, but I grew up in (socialist) Europe.
do you know how much a sandwich costs at this place? or a bowl of soup? if you think that all of the employees--even the 17 yo kid for whom this is her first job--should make something like $20+/hr, then expect to see a $7 or $10 sandwich disappear from the menu. you'll be paying $12 or $20 for that same thing. check the reviews before the pic of that board hit the socials. people enjoy this place. now other people are trying to wreck it. anyone asked what the employees think if this business fails because of this campaign? they'll be out of a job.
Hmm, I lived in Melbourne for 11 years. I still live in Brevard County but no longer in that city. I have never been there but I was always told it was good food and service. The COO defending the manager for posting an essentially tone-deaf hiring board is equally tone-deaf. Just fracking apologize and not make excuses. Maybe next time just put a salary range of minimum wage to $15 per hr based on ability and experience without the implication of scalable indentured servitude...
I appreciate the fact that a manager is telling people "Work hard and you can earn more," but those descriptions are not accurate. No one should have to kill themselves in a fast food job for $15.00/hr. They aren't getting paid the higher wages to work harder and get tasks done. They're getting paid higher wages to compensate them for the endless amounts of BS heaped on them by snotty customers and ungrateful management. If you're going to try to circumvent paying sick pay or providing healthcare...the least you can do is pay a living wage for a job that most of us try to avoid.
If you're the owner, are you only drawing a $15 per hour wage? If you're worth more than that, why isn't the employee who out shines and out preforms you? TBH, I'm surprised this place has any employees left at all. I'd see that, and go, "man, I'm getting $12 an hour for working like two people? and I must also be efficient, reliable and a multi-tasker? I'm putting that in my cover letter, and finding somewhere that will pay me like I deserve."
Wow. So many comments hidden if they express disagreement. Did the Taliban take over BP too?
You mean conservative trumpers like yourself complaining about people not being worthy to afford food and housing therefore they shouldn't live

If you're talking big Corp with CEOs making millions and pay their staff minimum they deserve to have their staff walk out.
#1 I find it absolutely amazing that all of these minimum wage discussions (arguments really) center around fast food. Something that none of them even try to address is that minimum wage impacts ALL industries that pay minimum wage AND the "formulas" that show there will be minimal impact from a $15/hr. minimum wage will be minimal EXCLUDE the fine print that "food prices assumed to remain the same". Food prices here are all of the raw food items that go into making that McDonalds burger and all of the people involved in getting those raw products from "field to plate" fall directly in the minimum wage category. Guess what? If the price of the raw product(s) goes up so too does the price of the finished product. If the fast food owner has to pay $15/hr. minimum so too does the garden owner who is producing the lettuce, tomato and beef for your burger. Cool. The ultimate outcome is that you can now say you make $15/hr.. What did you gain?
#2 Attack the fact that the wage vs. cost gap is an artificial thing created to maintain profit. These businesses will do what they need to do in order to maintain profit. McDonalds, for a few years, has already been playing with kiosks for ordering. These kiosks take a paying job from someone. In the last few months it has been published that McDonalds and their ilk are playing with the feasibility of automated systems in the kitchen. Again taking away a paying job from someone. Fight the fight that actually needs to be fought. You're being fed and accepting the $15/hr. lie for no other reason than it's the easy path.
