Xingyi Danielle’s dad was walking down the street in China one day looking for a place to grab a bite when he saw a group of people selling live dogs trapped in bags for meat consumption. The man didn’t have the heart to simply walk by…
So, he paid $90 for one of the doggies and saved his life. “His environment isn’t dog-friendly so he couldn’t buy more,” Danielle told The Dodo. “But [he] at least got to save one.”
As soon as he got home, the man snapped a photo of the dog in the bag to show the world they’re sold like some cheap commodity rather than a living thing.
Dad gave the dog a name, marking a new, happier chapter in the canine’s life: “It’s basically Doggo pronounced in Cantonese, actually.”
As the place the man lives at doesn’t allow dogs, the pooch is currently staying at his office for now, but he’s still trying his best to provide a good environment for him,” said Danielle.
Most importantly, Doggo didn’t end up on someone’s burger plate. The dog couldn’t be happier to be given a second chance at life.
“I was quite proud, to be honest,” said Danielle about her dad’s spontaneous act of kindness. You go dad!

I'm glad he saved the poor dog. The only problem I have with this is that he bought it. By buying it he only supported the industry. This leads to even more dogs in situations like these

We have bred them for thousands of years to work by our sides, keep us company, keep us safe and they have remarkably adopted into these roles to become the longest, strongest and closest animals linked to human existence. They skin them alive; boil them to death; Chop off their legs while still alive; tie their front legs behind their backs and their mouths shut then drag them into the street and beat their heads in with metal rods; electrocute them; Blow torch them while alive and conscious; hang them and slit their anuses; pierce their eardrums so they cant bark; gouge their eyes out so they cant run away..........And most of them are peoples stolen pets with collars and names, plucked from their homes to be starved, dehydrated and stacked on top of eachother in wire cages. The toss the cages around and if any body part is sticking out it is smashed.....the ones the suffocate and die in transit are lucky compared with the doom that awaits them when they brutally butchered......How do you think that feels?
Very few animals are taken into peoples homes by the millions and millions, sleep in their beds, play and eat with their children,protect them, like dogs, this is why there is a difference !!!
I don't condone any of the actions you listed either. Except maybe chickens as pets. I had one that could swim, play tag, & roll a ball back & forth. We didn't teach him that either. He just saw us playing & caught on.

Cows and rats have never had a bond of friendship with people. It's cruel the way all animals are in no respect but... You can't justify eating dogs after they have been so loyal to us, worship the ground we all on and hold the emotional capacity to create bonds with us. Even give their lives to protect us in some cases. This is demoralizing. Considering this and China's rediculous demand for ivory which is responsible for the pointless deaths of innocent elephants... I have no respect for their rediculous culture.

Every culture has its own sources of meat, and some may think us Americans are animals for slaughtering chickens, cattle, etc. This type of dog is actually bred for meat over there, but of course any animal can be a good pet. Glad this cute little doggo got to live, though <3

This is so sad... Yes, he supported the industry by buying the dog but... Well, it was the only help he could give and he saved a life. Every single dog should not be used as meat. Every single dog should be loved, have caring owners and a safe home. And I don't say it isn't cruel to eat other animals, such as chicken, pigs or cows. You must find balance between eating meat and other foods, for example eat only poultry. Or you can change meat with plants, but I see it a bit unnatural. And not giving meat to a growing child I think is not good too. This is only my opinion, I do respect other opinions.

I see both as both. If someone eats me, it's not nice for me, but I can't help it. It's natural order. I would not want that creature diffrerent species than me eating me would be punished. I'm animal, my species is human sapiens sapiens. I have right to try to stay alive and keep my loved ones and own species alive, too. How ever, I'm one of the species strong with strong cognitive skills and morals, so I have knowledge about pain other living creatures are able to feel. That's why hurting another living been as a deed is torturing. I can decide I have no right to eat and kill animals, and that's fine. I am happy for the doggo. But everyone who praises this action but goes to the supermarket to buy the daily amount of dead cow/chicken or goes to have a burger on the weekend is a hypocrite. Pamela: Dogs are bred from wolves to become a companion. They didn't choose us. And a lot of people will breed the dogs "cuter", and ending up with pugs, mops, chihuahuas, bulldogs etc so far that they have breathing issues(imagine having a 24/7 stuffed nose, and no access to nasalspray), eyes too big for the eyesockets so the eyes may, and sometime will "pop" out, skulls too small for the brain that gives them a constant headache and more similar problems.

And pigs, cows, chickens etc spend their ENTIRE life in small cages or rooms, often never to see daylight, and often kicked and punched by the people handeling them, every day, up until the day they die.(and the way if killing isn't always humanly) You should look up some documentaries about the "regulair" meat industry. Pigs are known to be as smart as a 3 yo child. It is just unlucky because most people don't consider them as cute. They can make a just as good companion as a dog.

In fact, pigs are very intelligent animals. They have very strong emotions, and strong need to play. That's why would be very important, that they could live their life so, that they have possibility to dig and tumble and plenty of stimulus. Service animal or not, isn't really a good argument. It has to do with the animals capability to feel physical and emotional pain, which both dogs and cows can at the same level. You just feel better buying meat at the supermarket because you can't see how the animal feels prior to ending up at your plate. Ignorance is bliss...
This it totally agreeable. Here in Australia, we eat almost anything. Even the animals that represent our Country. But we do not eat dogs, cats or any pets. Anyone who comes here from a culture that eats dogs or cats, cannot do that here. It is illegal. Well said Brian Hauck.

I remember walking on the Ramblas in Barcelona when I was about 15, and crying because of all the animals being sold in tiny cages, and suffering in the hot, hot sun. I actually wanted to buy one to save it, but my dad explained that it would only support the business if I did. I still feel the tension between seeing an animal suffering and wanting to act, and realizing that not buying would possibly prevent suffering of future animals on the other hand. it's that endless tension between saving the individual. As an ethicist, I don't think that buying these animals is the best way to stop the suffering of such animals, but as a human being, I can very much understand that you can't neglect the suffering of one individual being when actually facing it, even if it might have consequences.

Most people are opposed to dog meat because we keep them as pets and as working animals(AND put them in baby prams!), but how about cows? Hinduism believers see cows as sacred animals. Try bringing a high-class steak into a Hindu temple and get roasted by the people!! In countries such as China and Vietnam, dog meat is a common food amongst the people, and they don't have problems with it. So, for all of those dog-lovers out there, RESPECT the country's food tradition. Be aware that we also eat food that others don't accept!

Please check what you write. I don't torture people, nor animals. I certainly do not eat people either. People are 'beings', animals are Natures Spirits. Do not get me wrong. You wrote what you wrote and I responded, but not to have an argument. Look at Cathy Binder, then look at other peoples comments, that is all they are, 'comments' and I responded to your comment. It is a free world and I respect other cultures, but I still do not like dogs and cats being eaten, to me it is not natural, but it is to others. It is trying to be wiped out, and this bought it to the worlds attention. Lighten up.
I see both as both. If someone eats me, it's not nice for me, but I can't help it. It's natural order. I would not want that creature diffrerent species than me eating me would be punished. I'm animal, my species is human sapiens sapiens. I have right to try to stay alive and keep my loved ones and own species alive, too. How ever, I'm one of the species strong with strong cognitive skills and morals, so I have knowledge about pain other living creatures are able to feel. That's why hurting another living been as a deed is torturing. I can decide I have no right to eat and kill animals, and that's fine. I also can decide, that as an animal, I will eat other animals, and that's ok, too. How ever, torturing and bad treatment is not ok. Killing and hurting without (straight) connection with staying alive as an animal is not ok. That's why I don't like smoking - it kills so much animals for destroyed forests. How ever, I don't mock my smoking friends: that would not help any way.
Smoking is the smallest problem when it comes to deforestation, get your facts straight. The biggest problem is palm oil, used in food. Watch the documentary "before the flood".
I am happy for the doggo. But everyone who praises this action but goes to the supermarket to buy the daily amount of dead cow/chicken or goes to have a burger on the weekend is a hypocrite. If you approve eating meat - face it: every animal they kill for you is just like this dog. If you are fine with it: good! Killing is natural. But just because this dog looks cute, he does not deserve more than the cow. Sorry.

Pamela: Dogs are bred from wolves to become a companion. They didn't choose us. And a lot of people will breed the dogs "cuter", and ending up with pugs, mops, chihuahuas, bulldogs etc so far that they have breathing issues(imagine having a 24/7 stuffed nose, and no access to nasalspray), eyes too big for the eyesockets so the eyes may, and sometime will "pop" out, skulls too small for the brain that gives them a constant headache and more similar problems.

And pigs, cows, chickens etc spend their ENTIRE life in small cages or rooms, often never to see daylight, and often kicked and punched by the people handeling them, every day, up until the day they die.(and the way if killing isn't always humanly) You should look up some documentaries about the "regulair" meat industry. Pigs are known to be as smart as a 3 yo child. It is just unlucky because most people don't consider them as cute. They can make a just as good companion as a dog.

In fact, pigs are very intelligent animals. They have very strong emotions, and strong need to play. That's why would be very important, that they could live their life so, that they have possibility to dig and tumble and plenty of stimulus. I'm happy that breeding milk feed calfs is fobidden in my home country. Sadly, it's still allowed to import it. :(((
Service animal or not, isn't really a good argument. It has to do with the animals capability to feel physical and emotional pain, which both dogs and cows can at the same level. You just feel better buying meat at the supermarket because you can't see how the animal feels prior to ending up at your plate. Ignorance is bliss...
This it totally agreeable. Here in Australia, we eat almost anything. Even the animals that represent our Country. But we do not eat dogs, cats or any pets. Anyone who comes here from a culture that eats dogs or cats, cannot do that here. It is illegal. Well said Brian Hauck.
Snakes eat mice, yes...Wolves eat all kinds of big game, they're carnivores...And people are omnivores, which includes meat....such as chickens, cows, and pigs....but not dogs.. Not our best friends. I remember walking on the Ramblas in Barcelona when I was about 15, and crying because of all the animals being sold in tiny cages, and suffering in the hot, hot sun. I actually wanted to buy one to save it, but my dad explained that it would only support the business if I did. I still feel the tension between seeing an animal suffering and wanting to act, and realizing that not buying would possibly prevent suffering of future animals on the other hand. it's that endless tension between saving the individual. As an ethicist, I don't think that buying these animals is the best way to stop the suffering of such animals, but as a human being, I can very much understand that you can't neglect the suffering of one individual being when actually facing it, even if it might have consequences.
I'm sorry about cultural appropriation and all that crap, but I find this disgusting. At least have some semblance of mercy and breed them on humane farms and put them to sleep humanely before eating them. Creeps.

We need more people like your Dad in this world. Animals are living breathing things just like humans. Reminds me of hunting, if your hunting to feed yourself or your family that's one thing but hunting for sport is completely wrong. At least when I eat beef I don't have to see them kill the cow or watch them leave it in a bag like a sack of trash.

It's all about culture, I really DON'T see the point in how the dogs are SO-CALLED "poor"! Most people are opposed to dog meat because we keep them as pets and as working animals(AND put them in baby prams!), but how about cows? Hinduism believers see cows as sacred animals. Try bringing a high-class steak into a Hindu temple and get roasted by the people!! In countries such as China and Vietnam, dog meat is a common food amongst the people, and they don't have problems with it. So, for all of those dog-lovers out there, RESPECT the country's food tradition. Be aware that we also eat food that others don't accept!

This is only unacceptable in the eyes of cultures that keep dogs as pets. Very xenophobic of others cultures.
I'm fine with people eating different sources of meat, however how they handle the dogs is utterly cruel. Every animal going to a plate should have a good life and a very swift death. These guys are tortured and handled with no care. So no, not xenophobic, just sick and tired of people making up excuses to keep being barbaric to any animal.
