I work in InfoSec. People really do fall for c**p like this. I spend a lot of money making people take trainings that tell them not to. They all went I do it, and I say because one idiot works here, and I don't know who that person is yet, so everyone has to take it.

Sadly it's become clear that many of the people actually participating in these scams are themselves victims of crime - trafficked into slavery and forced to operate scams for criminal gangs, with punishment beatings etc. commonplace. It rather takes the fun out of such pranks as above. If you've not heard about this, here's one article to start with but there's loads more online. https://www.itv.com/news/2024-02-12/inside-the-scamming-networks-kidnapping-and-enslaving-victims-in-east-asia

I do think of that, as well, but that's something their authorities have to sort out. At the end of the day, these scammers con millions out of people and it's no joke. No one is going to take a moment to think if the scammer on the other line is in danger, nor feel any remorse, because that can be used to guilt someone into giving money or give more information than they should.

Excuse me sir or madam, do you have a moment to talk about your car’s extended warranty? Oh, I mean, you won a free trip to Florida! All I need is your social security number and address, and I’ll send you all of the information you need. Oh, and you’re looking for concert tickets? Well, that’s an amazing coincidence because I just so happen to have tickets to that show that’s been sold out for months. Just PayPal me!

Anyone who has a cell phone, an email account or has spent any time on the internet is well aware of the wide variety of scams out there. According to a Gallup poll, 8% of Americans admit that they’ve fallen victim to a scam in the past year, while another 7% report that at least one member of their household has been scammed. The majority of Americans say that they frequently worry about being scammed as well.

They're trying to log into the person's bank account or similar. If the person agrees to send the 6 digit code they'll click the verify button, and the victim will send them the code they need.

Then you're exactly the kind of target they're looking for. That 6 digit code will come from the target's own bank or some other place they do business with, and when they give it to the scammer that scammer will use it to take control of their account.

I had people respond to my lost dog post asking for a code... they texted the same c**p to every person on the lost ad... including a local contact near the lost site and the tracking / trapping team 🙄. As desperate as we were to find my dog, none of us were THAT stupid. Not once would they send a picture for proof; that was a pretty solid indication, too. We did eventually find her. She was lost in the woods in a blizzard for a week... not too bad off, all things considered... but was definitely NOT with Mr. SendMeACode

To learn more about these scams that are flourishing online and how to protect ourselves from them, we reached out to Rebecca Edwards, safety expert and lead reporter at SafeWise. Rebecca was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and explain why these scams have become so common.

“With the 24/7 news cycle and social media, it’s hard to gauge if there are more scams running rampant right now—or if we’re just more aware of it,” the expert says. “While I think it may be a little bit of both, there’s no question that scammers seem to be more brazen and emboldened these days. I think some of the contributing factors are widespread access, use, and reliance on the internet for conducting everyday business, from buying groceries to ordering medications. And it’s also the main place many people go for entertainment and community.”

You say that, but there's more and more companies that don't proof-read letters or texts. There's a generation of people who are so used to typing text messages in shorthand and the standard of spelling and grammar is becoming atrocious, so occasionally a poorly written letter or text may be genuine. Always best to check by looking for an official email or website and making sure it matches the one in the correspondence.

If you use a large bank you'll get one using their name soon enough. I've long ago forgotten the details, but I do still have a general memory of the first scam email I got using my correct first name. The email you got wasn't as obviously a scam for all the recipients who did have accounts at that bank.

I used to get a lot of calls for the newspaper of my location. A LOT. I kept telling them to take me off the list. They said they would, then the next month they'd call again. I got pissed. I called up the newpaper and found my way to the head of the department that was responsible for the phone calls. I insisted to him that I was tired of these phone calls, and empty promises to remove me from the call list. I bitched big time. I told the guy I have never wanted their newpaper, and I would never get it. The guy asked me why, and I told him I refuse to subsidize these phone calls. I never got called again.

Rebecca noted that scams are often crimes of opportunity, so the more people who shop or bank online, the more opportunities there are for a scammer to strike. “I also think the lag between the justice system and technical progress is a factor,” she pointed out.

“Because many scams can be hard to classify as crimes and consequences are very difficult to enact, people are getting away with it. The more people who get away with it, the more they (and other scammers) are empowered to keep going,” Rebecca explained. “And, of course, the anonymity of the internet is another part of this perfect storm for scammers.”

Well... fundamentally they do. Obviously the details look different. What would be interesting is the original source. Does it include dimensions for the table? Does the ad include wording like "picture is illustrative use only" or similar? If so you know you need to be careful because they're fine-printing you.

The scam itself isn't here, but the ploy is "oh I accidentally texted you this secret once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", and some terminally FOMO people go for it. The setup was recognized & played along with --- and it's kind of confirmed by the sender going along instead of "oops wrong, bye now" immediately.

They'll claim Zelle rejected their payment because your receive limit is too low. They'll try to get you to send them money to make your receive limit bigger, then they say they'll refund you plus pay for the item. Zelle doesn't work that way, but they're hoping you won't know that and will send them free money.

One time I had a car for sale. Someone texrt me that he wanted to buy my car but he was out of state on a business trip and wanted to send me check and deposit it to draw on it. I text him back and said once he got back to the state I was in we could get together and he could bring me cash. Never heard from him again.

I don't get how this is automatically a scam, and I say that from the buyer side. I don't usually have much cash, so if a seller will accept PayPal that's way more convenient for me.

According to Rebecca, the most common scams people fall victim to tend to be bait-and-switch types of scams. “Whether it’s a product you’re buying online from a site like Temu or Amazon, a scammer on a dating website, or a text or email that looks like it’s from your bank, the IRS, or a family member, these kinds of scams are easy to fall for at first,” she noted.

I got a Doordash delivery left at my front door. I came home over and hour later to see it. I brought inside to see if I could figure out where it was supposed to go. There was nothing on the receipt telling me who or where it was supposed to go. I can't imagine there not being anything! I called the only number on the receipt, told them about meal deliverer to my house, and I wanted to get it to whoever ordered it and the guy just said to keep it. I could either eat it or throw it away. Free dinner that nighg

Can someone explain why Americans put the word "would" in the past tense? It's not "...where you would have left it", it's not a conditional sentence, it's "...where you left it". I see this pattern a lot. It's bizarre.

Wait, so apparently the airline staff put them in a taxi to go from one terminal to another? I’m really not buying it. While JFK is somewhat confusing given how many terminals there are, the train between them is clearly marked, easy to access and one would literally have to purposefully avoid it to get to a cab stand. Who is ever at an airport and thinks the quickest way they move people between terminals is a taxi through arrival & departure parking and all the stops for unloading or picking up and pedestrian crossing to islands? This is silly. Also, I can’t imagine for a second with all the security & cctv that some airline employee is running a scam with a cab driver, given that the ease with which to identity the scam and the culprit. While I’m usually not skeptical or cynical, I cannot see how this really happened as told in this story. And I fly transpacific twice weekly!

Under law, there is a max charge for any cabs regarding airports, based on which airport and borough, the max flat rate per cab (not passenger) is $90. Further airport or airline staff do not help with the cabs, legally they cannot, only authorized Taxi Attendants can, and they require you to wait in line at select areas. And more Nothing about this adds up

That's super easy to say when you're not in the middle of that situation. Try really putting yourself in their shoes. The confusion of being in a new country, maybe barely speaking the language. The fear, the adrenaline. It becomes very hard to think rationally, which is exactly what the scam artists are counting on. And scammers still exist because it works. If it were so easy to do the rational thing, scammers would go out of business.

When I fly to other countries, I ~~~NEVER~~~ take the taxi at the arrivals level. They're all thieves and liars trying to rip you off. Instead, I go to the departures level where the taxis just brought people to the airport, and they have no passenger when driving back to the city. They have a choice: no fare on the return trip, or use the meter and I'll pay what it reads.

    Bob Brooce
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

    1. They don't leave without fare and drive around aimlessly trying to find one. If they don't get a fare before leaving the departure drop off they go to arrivals because that's the closest place to find people looking for a taxi ride. 2. In NYC (and an awful lot of other places) the taxis have meters that calculate the same fare regardless of the pickup location. In the case of JFK (and perhaps LGA) many of the fares are set and, once again, the specific locations don't matter.

As far as how they get away with these schemes, Rebecca says, “The most successful scammers lull you into a sense of comfort and trust by impersonating someone you know (AI is making this type of scam so much more viable) or presenting as someone or something you’re attracted to and trust.”

“I’ve seen multiple stories this year already about people like me, who are watching for scams professionally, being pulled into something that turned out to be a scam,” the expert shared. “That means the scammers are getting smarter and even the most diligent of us can be taken in if the scammer is able to get us to let our guard down. Once the scammer is ‘in’ their behavior often changes quickly, making threats and demands that are effective because of the information they’ve gained about you or the relationship they’ve established.”

It's actually a pig-butchering scam. They make it seem like they are super successful. And slowly convince you that "you too" can be successful like them. Only to "invest" in fake stock/crypto apps; you'll think you are making money, until you go to withdraw it. Last Week Tonight did a good piece on it. Too many people fall for it, so the scammers keep doing it.

Ugh somebody pulled this when we lost our kitten :( a*****e found her but needed a gift card to coordinate getting her back. We were so hopeful and it sounded so legit and we would have cheerfully given somebody money for holding on to her until we got him back...but scammers gotta scam :( ended up screenshotting the entire exchange and posting it to craigslist every few weeks to make sure nobody else dealt with the same heartache. Hopefully whoever did find that kitten loved him too, because he would make biscuits on your face when he was cuddling and was the cutest gd little cat :(

When it comes to protecting ourselves, Rebecca says the best way to steer clear of scammers is to face new/unfamiliar communications with a sense of distrust from the start. “This doesn’t mean you have to be paranoid or start wearing a tin foil hat, but that you should be proactive in verifying that an email, text, DM, or call is legitimate and from the person or company it claims to be from,” she noted.

“When it comes to phone calls, the best advice is not to answer unknown or suspicious calls and let it go to voicemail. If you do answer, don’t say ‘yes’ or confirm any information,” the expert continued. “Sometimes scammers are testing the waters just to see if a number is legit—then they often continue to pursue you. If you do answer and it feels off, trust your gut and hang up immediately. If you stay on the phone, ask for their information and say you’ll call them back. Ask for their name, employee ID, department, direct line, and supervisor, If they won’t provide that information, hang up.”

And it looks like they're having the chat in the phone version of the Discord app. If you were really reported in Steam a Valve rep would contact you in Steam not some random discord.

I actually got that scam before, strangely enough those are humans and not bots that pretend they have accidentally reported you because you have the same profile pic as the "person" they tried to report. I knew ASAP this was fake because my partner drew my profile pic so nobody else can have it, so I proceeded to tell this very confused scammer people that there are worms in the walls telling me about the moon falling from the sky to smash the Pope. Rebecca also urges readers not to click on anything or reply after receiving any suspicious emails, DMs, or texts from strangers. “If the IRS or your credit card company needs to contact you, they won’t do it through such informal channels,” she explained. “Save or screenshot the message (in case you need it to pursue a complaint or criminal charges) and then reach out to the supposed source through the traditional channels (publicly posted customer service numbers, etc.) to verify if the message was legit or not.”

You've never heard of people paying more than the original price to get something that's not for sale anymore?

What kind of low life scammer can't even send fake electronic tickets? It's not like sending them means you can't sell them again. And again. And again. And again.

None of these sort of scams work if you have never linked a bank card to your computer....same with the ones where a kid buys fairy castles in a game and ends up costing £1000. Don't SAVE the numbers of your card. Just input them each time, and NEVER save them.

Some red flags that Rebecca says to look out for are: “alarming language that creates a sense of fear and/or urgency to respond; messages that talk about an investigation, criminal case, or other scary event that you’ve never heard about before or received official notice of via regular mail or in person; and anything that asks you to confirm your name, birthday, social security number, bank information, or any other personal details.”

Why so scammers I’ve themselves away by asking about the weather. “We haven’t seen each other/talked/emailed/texted in ten years! How’s the weather?” because EVERYONE contacts old friends after years because they don’t know how to Google the weather. 🙄

Real people ask about the weather all the time, and expect something like "It's been great and we've really been enjoying the nice weather." rather than "It's in the high 70s and mostly sunny." What's weird about this is not starting by asking how things have been or something similar.

Scam maybe, or it's someone who is screwing up the number. If it's always someone trying to text "Maria" and it's always from the same number it's possible it is just someone screwing up each time.

I’m 46 and on TikTok. I’ve learned so much about gardening, suppressed news and laugh daily at the cute animal videos. If it’s not for you that’s fine but to each their own. I’ve also bought stuff with zero issues from the TikTok shop. Over 7 million small businesses use the platform.

Maybe not a scam as such, more like predatory and opportunistic. Instead of checking whether a car was legally parked they just boot everything and if you can produce the parking receipt take off the boot.

Have them come remove the boot, film it all, and file a small claims lawsuit for the maximum amount. They illegaly booted your car and wasted the time of the driver and any passengers who had to wait for them to come remove the boot. Also check with the municipality to determine the proper place to file a complaint. Alternatively, carry a cordless grinder and cut the boot off. If they complain, their records are obviously erroneous because you weren't parked illegally and somebody else must have cut the boot off of a different car.

Rebecca also urges readers to document everything. “If you have to fight a scam or are able to help prosecute a scammer, every bit of evidence you can produce will help make sure this person can’t do this to anyone else,” she explained. “Take screenshots, save messages, take notes, and tell someone else.”

“If you’re already caught up in a scam, it’s hard for you to see the truth in the midst of all the panic,” she added. “Telling someone you trust can help clear the cobwebs from your eyes. After you talk to someone you trust, report the incident to the proper sources, which can include the FTC, local law enforcement, the company or organization being impersonated, and the platform where the scam originated or took place.”

Biggest giveaway is offering to pay $500 for a 1-2 min song. Shoulda gone with $5 then switched to abuse and an assertion that the artist should be paying because it's worth loads more for the exposure.

Maybe the better idea would have been to say "how do you want to pay" and if they'd been willing to pay by venmo/paypal then you'd know it wasn't a scam and merely coincidental wording?

That's a very typical replica based on a real lighter that, if I'm not mistaken, is in a museum. Is seriously anyone surprised that they didn't get the original? Should be obvious.

Presumably tourists are told they are genuine lighters from US soldiers in the Vietnam war, so they buy them for the history/miliary link/whatever and they're actually mass produced last week.

When i visited Vietnam, it had just opened for tourism from the USA. They had tons of lighters and dog tags, all fake. I brought home a lighter that read " We fly to get high " that had an engraving of a copter. The US Customs agent asked me " what is this supposed to be ? " and I said " A lighter ". They also asked if I had dog tags, as they were dumb enough to think they would be real.

So how does this scam actually work? They're offering to pay. You can create an invoice through paypal. So what? the person does some sort of charge back against the paypal payment? Or do they believe the person is fishing for their paypal name in the hope they can guess a password and get in?

Comment from the original post - “I looked it up to confirm it is a scam. Idk if first gal got it wrong by being okay with paypal but they are supposed to pay with a check that has an extra 0. They will demand the repayment and will thus scam around 3,000 from you.”

How does this scam trick work? I assume it will try to steal the PayPal information to take the money away, but without the password that could be quite difficult.
