If you've ever tried to call a cat somewhere in a foreign country, I'm sure you've noticed that they don't always react. Why? Because apparently international cats react to different sounds.
In England, they say "chh-chh-chh". In Israel, they say "ps-ps-ps". As for India, they say "meow-meow". Each country gets a cat's attention with different noises, and these were just a couple examples! Keep on scrolling for a list of how to call cats in a bunch of different countries, compiled by Bored Panda.

In my region we also use ci ci/tsi tsi instead of the above. But only to unknown cats. My cat usually reacts to "are you hungry?'"
And endlessly amusing to me always because one term for breasts is pronounced "Tsitsi" so it's as though you're calling out for your runaway pair of boobs.
As an American... this is true, I hear this all the time...usually by people who have no business near a cat.
You don't. In the UK, including England it's a variation on Psswsssws Psswsssws Psswsssws. It's accompanied by holding your hand oud out with your thumb upermost ond rapidly rubbing your thumbver the tips of your first two fingers.
Load More Replies...I've never heard this in my whole 26 years in England! Puss puss puss puss puss, yes, chh chh chh chh chh, no.
Because you're from Africa, where you have lions and you don't really want to call them.
Load More Replies...I've never said that, and I was born in the UK. We use a teeth-sucking sound like tssst-tssst-tssst.
Never heard anyone here do that, lol! Maybe puss, puss, puss,,,, or a tongue click, but I don't know what this is meant to sound like,,,chh!?
If its a tongue click or kissing noise, than that`s also here in Romania and i think in more countries. Maybe it`s the most common, universal calling sound.
What the...? "Here kitty kitty" yes, "puss puss puss" yes, I even sometimes ask neko-chans to oide, but as for "chh-chh-chh"... No!
Never in all my 28 years of having cats have I ever said this to a cat. -_-
Not true. We say something like ‘tststststststst’. It sounds like a kiss but with a t
I’m from England and we all say a something like a kiss sound but with a t. It sounds kinda like ‘tut-tut-tut’ but like a kiss
Not true at all - I say psh psh psh or kiss kiss kiss (kiss) no idea how you say Chh?
I was wondering what it would say for the UK...This exactly the noise I make when trying to lure random cats home!! I want a cat so bad!!
I always called a cat "kss-kss-kss" and I am from Latvia. "Minka-minka" is an old school nowadays used by old people or in a country side.
Face off! I don't know which side to look at. They are both perfectly beautiful! Would you have two names for this kitty?
This looks like the cat from this commercial, especially at the end https://youtu.be/Qe88s3tpH0A
In Serbia we call them by saying Mac-mac-mac (said with a c that sounds like a German tz for example)
I was telling that to my husband! Im now in USA and any cat pay me attention when a said michi- michi -michi like in Ar gentine
notice that all of them (almost) come in three short words. Apparently cats universally respond to repeating, short sounds.
I called "Pss-pss-pss' out my back door last night, like I usually do, and got both of my cats and a third one trotting up to the door... ;-)
You should add Indonesia.. We called it.. Umm.. I don't know how other people called their cat
I just do the thing where you put the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and suck back making the tsk tsk sound. I do that for everything though. I call people over like that too..
Also as I was imitating the sounds from the world my cats kept looking at me hahaha
This would be a fun re-post to guess the cats citizenship. The French cat was hilarious!
It’s Pish-pish-pish in Iran as well. Turkish cats in Istanbul respond to pish-pish-pish too. But North American cats don’t even turn their heads no matter how hard you try and say it.
Photo at 12 is taken in Turkey not in Russia. And that cats name isTombik
I am Hungarian. When I was a child I used to think they will react to these but now I realised that my cats only respond when they see food.
All the kitties are just too gorgeous! Wish I could have all of them... :)
Where's Switzerland (the country where cheese grows on the mountains :P )??? In the Swiss German part, we call them "Büsi-Büsi-Büsi".
i knew this was why cats ignored me when i'm in other countries!
In Filipino Cebuano we say "Ming ming ming." I don't know what the other dialects say but I'm sure there are differences.
