According to Gallup's State of the American Manager report, half of all employees in the US have quit jobs at some point in their careers in order to get away from their bosses. (The figures are similar or even higher for workers in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.)
And the subreddit r/ChoosingBeggars has plenty of examples that illustrate this figure.
While some may find them amusing, the reality is that having a bad superior can be mentally and emotionally exhausting; it's essential for employers to recognize the importance of treating their staff with respect and fairness to maintain a healthy and productive work environment.

According to the team at the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an organization comprised of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs 45 and younger, the biggest red flags to watch out for in a manager are:
- Micromanagement;
- A one-size-fits-all approach to management;
- Doesn’t lead by example;
- Lack of empathy;
- Focused on blame, rather than solutions and support;
- Uses their team as pawns for their own success;
- Lack of focus;
- Takes credit for others’ work;
- No respect for employees;
- Little to no self-awareness;
- A sense of entitlement rather than a sense of duty;
- Expects all employees to be like them.
This Boss Who Asked An Employee To Push Back Their Brother's Birthday Plans
Restaurant That Prides Itself On $3/Hr Pay Demands Customers Give Better Tips
I've worked on restaurants for over 10 years and I hate when I hear or see bosses post things like 'our servers make $2 an hour so please tip'. Like dude, PAY ME A LIVABLE WAGE! You paying me c**p but asking others to tip doesn't make you a good boss that cares about your employees. But until my employers do, please dear patrons, tip me😁
Load More Replies...I would love to hear a story about a restaurant in USA that increased the prices of all their food by 25 or 30%, paid their staff a PROPER wage (at least equivalent to what they'd get on a good night with tips), and then put a huge sign out the front stating NO TIPS REQUIRED, plus a good social media marketing campaign. I bet they'd make a killing......
Us prices are often more expensive than prices where I live although allegedly everything is more expensive in my country due to high taxes. Here, tips cannot be counted on minimum wage, so no undercutting service personal. But somehow going out to eat is still considerably cheaper. McDonald's workers get paid more than minimum wage, have full paid four weeks PTO and unlimited sick leave and like everyone else they have health insurance. Still prices are the same or less that in the US. So where does that money go in good ol USA? Also, why would it matter if prices went up to pay decent wages when you already have to pay the same price with tips without minimum wage? The only difference would be that you know beforehand how much you'll have to pay and if you can afford that.
Load More Replies...Maybe if he would stop thinking of them as children, he would see fit to pay them a decent wage.
Load More Replies...How can $3 an hour be a thing? I'm in Canada we our minimum of $15 an hour isn't enogh...
It shouldn't be a thing. However, in the US, a restaurant can get away with paying $3 an hour in wages, as long as tips bring the waitperson's total compensation up to minimum wage. It's a horrible system that only benefits the restaurant's owner, which, ninety-nine times out of one hundred, is an LLC. (Another business 'protection' that allows businesses to abuse the heck out of their staff and customers.)
Load More Replies...Nothing. It's worked here in Australia for years - though tips are the sprinkles on top of the sundaes when we get them!
Load More Replies...This person is begging for tips because if the wait staff doesn't make enough to satisfy minimum wage it comes out of the owners pocket to make up the difference. They don't really care about the wait staff, they just don't want to have to make up any lack in pay
I will never understand this disgusting loophole where servers get paid less than minimum wage. I think that place is just being nasty because in the U.S. a restaurant is required to cover the difference if the server doesn't earn enough in tips to put them at minimum wage. Tips should be a bonus for a job well done, not something that you have to depend on to earn a living.
Some of us live off fixed incomes bc our nerves just decided to go, "Hey what if we simulated the severe burning pain FOREVER! For just like, no reason!". In short, it's rare I both can afford to go out to eat AND feel like doing so. I always tip, but can't tip quite as much as I used to, and honestly sometimes the tip has been the deciding factor in not having a rare, once every few f*****g months day out of my prison. I mean house. Maybe THEY should take better care of "their girls" so my physically and economically broke a*s doesn't have to? Rant over....
Maybe YOU should consider not owning your own business if you can't afford to pay your valuable employees a living wage. Society doesn't owe you your own business.
Pay them a fair wage. if you can afford to be open then you can afford them a wage that they can live on.
The ABSOLUTE Minimum wage in Australia for full/part-time cafe/restaurant workers over 20 in Australia is $21.38 an hour, plus superannuation, sick leave, annual leave etc 97329E84-2...3-jpeg.jpg
Restaurants in the USA are like vultures, picking the meat off their staff's bones. The tipping culture is dreadful. Although UK wages could do better (Waitress: hourly wage £5 - £10, Average - £7).
Well those are the minimum wages in the uk dependant upon the employees age across the board, regardless of industry
Load More Replies...Why is it their pay relies on tips? Just f*****g pay them. We have a minimum wage of at the least of $15 and hour and our restaurants aren’t all $100 a dish. JUST F*****G PAY PEOPLE.
If I plan to tip 20%, I would rather have the food cost 30% more and the restaurant pay their employees $20/hour and not allow tipping... Hell, I'd pay 40% more for that. McDonald's pays $15/hour, so I know you can afford it without raising prices. But we need to get away from this s**t where it's my job to pay your employees for you in exchange for the privilege of buying your food!!!
I wish we could get rid of the tip concept and wait staff would just get good hourly pay.
As an American it's all yacht money. We can't pay our servers a livable wage. The stakeholders yacht money will suffer. And you know how Bob gets when he can't upgrade his yacht each year. What will the other stakeholders think?
"Stop being so stingy!" I love that part coming from a Scrooge.
3 whole dollars per hour for putting up with people's c**p!!! wow!!! It's worth noting that every time the minimum wage is suggested to be raised... it does not affect restaurant workers because restaurants get to avoid that....which needs to stop
I call shenanigans. They're not looking out for their staff with this request, they're looking out for their own bottom line. If tips don't bring the $3 hourly wage up to minimum wage, the restaurant is on the hook for the difference.
That restaurant is around 25 miles from my house. It's in Chattanooga/Lookout Valley on Cummings Hwy.
Got any eggs that are about expire? Feel like taking a 25 mile drive? :-)
Load More Replies...I spent 15 years working in restaurants. You would be sickened by the amount of restaurant owners that don't understand that what this is saying is- "I only pay my people what I'm legally required to I like my money so everyone else pony up so I don't have to pay them" And trust me when I managed places I tried to pint this simple fact out to them and it falls on deaf ears. It's a predator system where it's the customers responsibility to pay the staff directly.
How about instead "To ensure our workers are appropriately compensated, we will now be imposing mandatory minimum service charge of 20% on all orders."
as someone who worked as a server before when a restaurant does this the staff see's none of that money only the owner does greed is a MF they will do what ever they can to not pay you right
Load More Replies...Or just pay them regular minimum wage and instead of you making 75% pure profit you'll settle for 70%???
American capitalism at its best. Pay your employees a decent f*cking wage.
This is disgusting!!!! How long ago was this? I didn't know any employer could pay such a measly sum. You should be ashamed of yourself! Asked customers to give them what you don't/won't pay them. I'm British, but I find the "tipping culture" wrong. I always tip, but that shouldn't be how someone makes a living wage. I really feel for servers in America, but I also know that some employers are great. HOW DARE YOU ASK YOUR CUSTOMERS TO HELP MAKE THEIR WAGES NORMAL!!!! People should understand that they (customers) cannot afford the tip just because they are eating out. I wish every girl and boy stand up and be counted! I'd love servers to say "I'M NOT COMING IN UNLESS YOU PAY A WAGE THAT HELPS ME TO LIVE!!!! If all of these wonderful servers stood to their employers, things might change. You are part of what makes the world go round, and all the rest of you that get paid shite wages! They couldn't do/run a business without you all.
Every state should give servers the mandatory minimum. This shouldn't be happening.
Sorry not sorry, but the tipping culture sounds pretty sh*tty in my book. Thank goodness I get a livable wage (not exactly a major one but I can survive).
US companies are do funny... They cry and complain about "quite quitting" and being short staffed, but the truth is: most US jobs are simple underpaid sh:tty jobs in toxic environments with crappy management. My recommendation: leave these sh:tty jobs, level up. Companies need workers and they need to offer better conditions...
I would never be a customer. If you pay $3 a hour for YOUR staff what do you do to cheapen the food?
If you’re running a business and you can’t afford to pay people to do the job you want done, you have an impossible plan and will go out of business
You pay your staff so little that they must depend on tips to live and THEN have the gall today it is your customers who are stingy? Have a look in the mirror, boss.
1st, that's an awesome sign. Respect. 2nd, there's a reason 1 in every 2 restaurants fail, and it's cost. Food cost, labor cost, alcohol cost, linen cost, electric bill, gas bill, water bill, maintenance bills (because for some reason, when many of you go to a restaurant you lose your civility, especially in the bathrooms 🙄), and replacement costs. What? You think free replacements just magically come for the wine glass you broke or the salad plate your kid dropped? It ALL costs a LOT of money. But, in order to keep people coming in, they have to keep the menu at competitive prices so YOU will still go there to eat. Restaurant owners will tell you they don't make hardly any money the first few years, if they can stay open that long, because every penny goes back into the restaurant. I guaran-damn-tee you that people who make themselves feel better about not tipping by saying, "pay them a livable wage", would be the FIRST people that would never come back to eat if the menu prices reflected the HUGE rise in labor costs. In fact, you'd be the first to raise hell over the new prices. You guys don't understand how the restaurant business works, you don't understand how 'tipping out' works; you don't understand any of it. So please, please stop making yourselves feel justified by not tipping. At the very least tell your server you're not going to tip. They'll still make sure you get your food, have drinks, etc, but they won't waste time they don't have to and can use that time for their other tables who WILL tip them. Please at least do that.
This is a post a server should have made, NOT the person paying them.
That is the lowest pay-per-hour I have ever seen! It's not even legal here in Nova Scotia. The minimum wage is $14.50!
Honestly, if I saw that notice in a restaurant I would walk out!
Load More Replies...Girls? Isn’t underage employment illegal? Or do they mean, GROWN A*S ADULTS?! 🤦🏽♀️
Call me crazy but if your business model can’t operate while paying your employees a living wage then by the laws of capitalism it can’t keep up with the market and should change or fail. Basically asking the general public to subsidize their employees pay…sounds a bit socialist to me 🤷🏼♀️
I went into a vape/smoke/ headshop place last week. There was a tip jar on the counter. After talking to the "server?" I found he was the owner of the shop and was expecting me to tip him for a pack of rolling papers.
STOP BEING SO STINGEY AND TIP YOU SERVER (so I don’t have to pay then a normal decent living wage) kind regards, Asshat

Manager Is Disappointed None Of The Talented Job Interviewees Have Sent A Thank You Email For The Interview
According to data collected by Zenger Folkman, a professional services firm providing leadership development, quiet quitting is usually less about an employee’s willingness to work harder and more creatively, and more about a manager's ability instead.
Their researchers looked at data gathered since 2020 on 2,801 managers, who were rated by 13,048 direct reports (on average, each manager was rated by five direct reports), and compared two things:
- Employees' ratings of their manager's ability to "Balance getting results with a concern for others' needs."
- Employees' ratings of the extent to which their "work environment is a place where people want to go the extra mile."

The research term they gave for those willing to give extra effort was called “discretionary effort.” Its effect on organizations can be profound: if someone has 10 direct reports and they each give 10% additional effort, the net result of that additional effort is increased productivity.
"We found that the least effective managers have three to four times as many people who fall in the “quiet quitting” category compared to the most effective leaders," co-founders of Zenger Folkman, Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, wrote in Harvard Business Review.

Not asking for much are they, just free labor and more free labor, closely followed by you paying them for your free labor.
Instead of focusing on themselves and making ridiculous demands, managers should try to promote open and honest dialogues.
"The most important factor is trust," Zenger and Folkman highlighted. "When we analyzed data from more than 113,000 leaders to find the top behavior that helps [them] balance results with their concern for team members, the number one behavior that helped was trust. When direct reports trusted their leader, they also assumed that the manager cared about them and was concerned about their well-being."

Their research has linked trust to three behaviors. First, having positive relationships with all of your direct reports, then consistency, and finally expertise. "By building a trusting relationship with all of your direct reports, the possibility of them quietly quitting dissipates significantly," Zenger and Folkman highlighted.
"The approach leaders took to drive for results from employees in the past is not the same approach we use today. We are building safer, more inclusive, and positive workplaces, and we must continue to do better."
