Airline Introduces Tool To Stay Away From Screaming Babies On Its Flights
Japan Airlines’ seating map shows where children under the age of two are during their flights. This move, which is part of the organization’s Smile Support travel service, is supposed to benefit everyone involved: it keeps children only near passengers who aren’t bothered by screaming and other disruptions, and puts passengers who want nothing to do with a fussy baby aisles away from young families who are sick and tired of angry looks.

At least one other Japanese airline offers its customers customers the same feature. A spokeswoman for All Nippon Airways said its seat maps have shown where children are sitting “for a while”.
The feature has been met with mixed reactions online. Some fliers have been expressing relief

Heloisa Flores, a Japan-based moderator on the popular aviation Facebook group, Airborne Memes for Flight-Oriented Teens, said that trying to make everyday life as convenient as possible with little behavioural changes is, in a sense, very Japanese. “In my opinion it works in Japan, and is positive,” she told Bored Panda.
“In Japan, a big percentage of people flying everyday are businessmen commuting to and from work. Depending on the route and time of your flight, you’ll notice that most people on it are men in suits. I live in Fukuoka, and there are more than 100 flights from FUK to Tokyo airports every day. That being said, and following Japan’s culture of not speaking loudly, eating or drinking in public transportation, I think this new feature is trying to make the experience of commuting on flights more similar to commuting on buses, trains or the Shinkansen, which are very quiet. And usually, this is due to respect for workers who are either preparing to work long hours or coming back from it.”

Share on FacebookMost people understand and tolerate baby crying. They just can’t tolerate idiot parents that let their baby screaming for hours and still pretending they’re not there.
THIS six million upvotes. I don't mind kids, or babies. I HATE parents that ignore their needs that cause them to disturb other people.
Load More Replies...Planes are not that big so if there is a screaming baby on the flight you're going to hear regardless of where you sit.
It's still better than to have it right next to you.
Load More Replies...I'm with the guy who would pay extra for flights where only people over the age of 18 are allowed. On a long flight, that would be worth extra money.
I don't know, I've seen some bratty entitled adults too. So put up with a baby that can't help themselves, or an unbelievably whiny, entitled, loud, grown a*s person who SHOULD know better?
Load More Replies...They didn't say they were. They just propose the option to sit further from them, even if there is noone to blame.
Load More Replies...First of all, babies cry for a lot of reasons. There could be the casual brat, or the neglecting parent who could, by paying more attention to a toddler minimize the fuss. However a crying baby on a plabe - now close your eyes and try to remember the moment the plane lifts off, the small turbolences and the moment your ears pop cause of the difference in the air pressure. A kid feels all those too. But as you, a grown person realise those are minor nuisances, a baby can literally be scared to death, not knowing what is happening to it. And as babies can only express anything with crying - they start crying. Stop being an a*****e and feel a little empathy towards a small human who is scared.
I understand that they feel the same stuff, don't understand it, are frightened and start crying as their only means of "defence". But those frequencies make my ears bleed. So why all this hate towards people (like me) that just try to stay away from proto-humans as far as they can, to make the flight more pleasant for everybody involved? Except for the infant I guess, because they won't care about me sitting next to them, they got other problems of their own.
Load More Replies...All those people asking for tolerance should like this feature, the more tolerant people can voluntarily take the seats next to babies, while those that don't want to be surrounded by what could be loud screaming babies (where even noise cancelling headphones don't help) can avoid a situation they already know can be unpleasant. It's a win win for everyone.
Would there be a feature for loud screaming autistic/mentally ill kids and/or adults who scream and carry on the whole flight? No, that would be discrimination
Load More Replies...Nothing against parents of infants who fly but if and when I fly I am already having stress and I have auditory sensitivity and not enough money to pay for noise canceling headphones that will work against a crying baby in a metal tube. I literally CAN'T handle babies crying for my mental, emotional, and physical health. I would love an option to fly baby free but this Japan Airline thing is a close second. So for people who are saying that people need to "Just Get Over It" some of us CANT "Get Over It"
Could you please tell which noise cancelling headsets you are referring to that are able to cancel out frequencies babies cry at? Never mind the cost. Just asking out of professional curiosity.
Load More Replies...Won't you have to wait until AFTER all the babies seats are booked to see where they are? By that time all of the good seats are taken.
For people who see this as negative, I don't understand you. We all know the baby is not bad or doing it on purpose, everyone gets it but that doesn't mean you'd like to sit near one. You can already choose your seat anyway, it's just added information of source of noise so you can mitigate your discomfort, with no impact to the baby or the family.
To the people who say it is no problem--try having your seat kicked and the "touch screen" turned into a "punch screen" for a 17 hour flight. I have 5 kids, and I have earned a lot of patience over the years. Others do not have that opportunity. I fly a lot and what I do NOT see are people who "don't mind" offering to change seats with someone that DOES mind.
what kind of babies have you seen? normal babies can't punch screens or kick seats
Load More Replies...Being a parent I definitely sympathize with parents whose infant cries non-stop on flights. It's hard on them as well as us. There have been times during my long-haul flights when I have offered to take a crying baby while the mom uses the rest room or just simply gets a break. The ones that get on my last nerve are the misbehaving toddlers/little kids and their parents who act like they have no control over it. One kicked my seat and pulled my hair for hours before the little angel finally fell to sleep. Yeah, mom couldn't stop him. I figure if she's lost control of a four year old, there is no hope for the kid's future.
I fly business class long distances. I sure as hell ain't gonna sit next to a screaming kid after paying thousands for a flight.
So many idiots commenting on this. Of course, they're parents. Probably can't control their kids either. I hope this is just a step towards CHILDFREE FLIGHTS. As a Frequent flyer I can understand if a baby makes a little noise, the problem is the parents that usually act all superior and as if they have more privileges just because they have a child and they don't care about the other passangers. RME.
I'd rather have a warning of where the annoying gabby a******s who won't STFU are sitting.
I don't see why anyone would have a problem with this. Seems like a win-win for all involved. I would definitely take advantage of it. It doesn't mean you're an intolerant baby hater just because you prefer not to be seated with one if given a choice.
not only in planes but also in buses..once i had a 14 hour trip on a bus and there was a kid, maybe 5-6 years, she was sitting on the isle seat. her uncle was in front of me. apart from being noisy(the kid) uncle is also very noisy like the bus was their house. not to mention her uncle reclined his seat that it is already hitting my knees. the whole trip was a pain to me.
Who wants to sit next to a screaming baby? No one. But if you do: EARPLUGS should be provided by the airlines which will only “soften’ the noise. Still, one can hear a crying infant 5 rows up, so what difference does it make?
This is good, I guess? I mean, as a traveller, I appreciate any kind of effort made for the sake of the passengers' comfort and safety. However, personally, crying kids don't really bother me. It's whiny grown a*s adults the annoying ones. Like those young ladies I had to endure on my previous flight. Everything about their words and voice tone was shouting "look at me, I'm spoiled!"
Personally after years of working the night shift on a paediatric ward crying babies are no problem with me
I know people who work with small children but at their free time they do not want to listen any screaming children.
Load More Replies...Does it really matter where you are sitting if there is a screaming baby on board?
This is so dumb I'm sorry, but as a mom and babysitter we have no control over when our children want to cry or not. We can try our hardest to make them stop and give them everything in our power to make them happy but they will not stop. You where a baby and you cried and trust me, there is no more embarrassing thing than knowing your inconveniencing someone especially in that settings. Babies don't cry in convenient times and it is our jobs as mothers or parents in general to make them stop. I understand that. But sometimes they won't and we are more embarrassed than you are angry at us for being there next to you.
I take a sleep mask, noise-cancelling earphones and earplugs, because there are all kinds of disturbances.
I'm a Nana kids cry BUT would they put an icon on a seat to warn me a BIG person was sitting there or someone with bad body odour. Hate both those things.
yeah, babies can't help being babies, but fat people and smelly people can. but you know, body positivity and all, better to just hate children instead
Load More Replies...I have a feeling that the people saying "thank you" do not have kids, and the ones saying "get over it" are parents, and I, a father of 2 wonderful boys (not infants though), join in by saying "get over it guys" 😁.
Our seats have no babies seating. The only flight we fly are Singapore, and ANA airlines, it's clean and safe, we would not go for others. If there are no other choice we would just cancel.
I'd gladly suffer a screaming baby over a 20 stone person in the seat next to me encroaching into my space......... Is there an emoji for that scenario..?
I would pay extra for flights with no children. Once I had a woman change her babies diaper on the tray table and another time a kid grabbed my laptop and started tapping on it while the mother did nothing.
Never been annoyed by a baby. Have been annoyed many times by drunken idiots in stag and hen parties, shouting, swearing and generally running the flight attendants ragged.
i was on a flight once with a row of drunk german dudes sitting behind me, they were carrying on like complete twonks, seriously loud, abusive to the staff and disruptive...then they had the audacity to eyeball a parent who's baby made a little sound
Load More Replies...They should just put the kids down in the hold with the other pets.
But it only shows where seats that are appropriate for travelling with small children are located. It is more of a tool to show the likelihood of having babies in your immediate surroundings instead of telling where exactly everyone will be seated during the flight. I think it is helpful to people who do maybe not realize that bulkhead positions are often used by parents and might get surprised by all the little ones around them. Just a helpful tool, no need to make a big deal out of it or accuse people of being the problematic one just because they prefer to sit a little further from small children if they can influence the odds to be in their favour. Parents have needs, babies have needs, but some adults might also have their needs (sensory issues, migraine, whatever) - just respect each other.
i'm torn between liking this idea, wishing it was for like 2-6 year olds instead because those are usually the ones that actually try to annoy you, and worrying that this is an unsafe thing to do because pedos now know exactly where the children sit. as someone who's been on a 7 hour flight with a 5 year old kicking my seat from behind while the parent says "boys will be boys" instead of stopping them, i think a lot of parents assume because their kids are good or they are good parents that translates to other parents too, but that's not the case. i can totally understand being wary of sitting near a kid on a flight because you don't know if this is a good parent or not, but i don't think the under 2 crowd is the real worst culprit.
My I have three suggestions? 1) Buy noise-cancelling headsets. If you can afford long-haul flights, you can afford these. 2) Just act human on a flight. Marking "danger-zones" beforehand will just give a wrong impression. Do you also want an icon for smelly and drunken people? What about one for disabled ones? You get the point I guess. Just talk to people and be friendly to each other. 3) If you really want to do something, be the first to stand up and walk to the parents of a crying child. But not to rant at them, like all the others, but to affirm them. And see a miracle happen: parents get more relaxed, baby gets more relaxed. Works surpsiringly often.
Have you considered that some of us who would be on said flights with said crying infants have auditory sensitivity tied to a disability ourselves and can't afford a set of really good noise-canceling headphones that can outdo a crying infant and that maybe we ourselves aren't paying for the flight but a relative?
Load More Replies...Tbh most of the commenters are 100% more rude than the OP. People have every right to plan their jorneys to be as relaxing as possible. Of corse babies don't cry to spite people. But that doesn't mean everyone has to be subjected to it. A lot of travellers are stressed out and don't deserve to be put through more stress. The whole "YOU are the problem" or "Adults are worse" is just internet addicts trying to be relevant.
Many babies experience the bends (like deep sea-divers do) from pressurizing and depressurization of the plane’s cabin. Both cause me extreme pain in my head. Notice how babies only cry most times when the plane is taking off or landing. People have no idea what is happening to the babies (or me) which is why I think it is cruel to take babies along on flights. Far wiser to take a train or bus.
lol, all the adults here acting more childish than the babies. waaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaaaa
I've never understood why anyone would take a baby on a long-haul flight. Surely it would be easier to just rent one when you get to your destination.
Many people also wish for hotels that are only for adults and are alcohol free. That is because they want to actually sleep at the hotel and not listen screaming children or partying adults the whole night. :) I have also stayed at hotels where it is impossible to sleep because of the loud noises.
Better question why are you taking a baby..not an toddler..a baby on a plane...you know damn well the air pressure hurts their ears and it will be screaming the whole flight..
The same reason you're in the plane... To travel to a destination.
Load More Replies...So just get over it or tolerate it... hmmm. How bout we have an option to separate us from them? Because as mentioned there are many idiot parents who don’t care that others may have work to do, wish to sleep or like myself get my nerves jangled in response to high pitched wailing and being totally powerless to take myself out of the situation/distressing/torturous environment. Not only annoying, but no one wants to hear a child cry. It breaks your heart too. And again helpless to help. So please let us separate if we want. Those it doesn’t bother, feel free to remain. I’ve had too many bawlin baby headaches on flights, and once a violent episode of vomit from a child land on me. Six hours of crying and smelling bad! No, I don’t think I can just “ get over it”
Generally I am fine if I remember my headphones but as an Autistic person, it can be sensory overload and frustrates me.

This is dumb. So I pick a seat away from a baby in a completely enclosed flying tube so no matter where you sit you'll still hear it, it's not a friggin hotel where you can get on a different floor. Also most of the time babies cry on a plane because their ears aren't popping. Not like you can give a 6 month old gum. I flew with my kids when they were little. I gave them a little bit of benadryl before the trip and they were fine. Cleared their sinuses and helped them sleep. People are stupid.. Please pick a seat away from me. lol. Oh and then when you pick that baby free row, I hope parents book a seat next to you with twins. lol
An unnerving sound is unnerving regardless of the source. You can sugarcoat it as much as you want and try to shame people for being disturbed by an unnerving sound, but fact is that a prolonged loud noises disturbs everyone.
