Kat Von D has over 12M followers on Facebook and nearly 6,5M followers on Instagram. So, when this tattoo artist and cosmetics entrepreneur says something, people hear it. That’s why Caroline Hirons had a problem with Kat’s recent anti-vaccine claims. To illustrate her point, she told about her son’s brutal battle against mumps.
Celebrities (most notably Jenny McCarthy) have been linked with impacting the number of parents who choose vaccines. McCarthy pushed against the MMR vaccine, in part blaming it for her son’s autism diagnosis. It was followed by record numbers of measles cases in the U.S. After the fraudulent study was retracted, however, the vaccine rates started to come back up.

My great grandmother had 11 children. Four of them died in their early years, due to childhood illnesses. If she were here, I'd ask her opinion of vaccines.

If herbal and naturopathic medicine cured anything, we wouldn't have needed the vaccines. I bet you were vaccinated as a child. Because if you had ever had either of the measles, mumps or chicken pox, you would not ever want your child to experience the misery of having them. I was in the 6th grade when the health dept. came to school and we were given the smallpox and polio vaccines. All the other vaccines came many years later. Read about Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal's daughter, who died from measles. I made damn sure my kids got all the vaccines that were available for them including chickenpox. I remember how miserable it was to be inflicted with these illnesses especially chickenpox. Why would you not vaccinate a child and let them run the risk of possible mental or physical lifelong handicaps or even death?

Hahahaha i planned a water birth no drugs quiet music .....my reality was COMPLETELY different! I was three weeks overdue baby was NOT coming on her own, because she didn’t fit being she was 3 weeks over!! I ended up having a failed induction I suffered ptsd from the ordeal and had an emergency c section, you can plan all you like baby will either come when they’re ready OR you might need help! It doesn’t make you less of a mother if your way of birthing is different to the plan. My nephew's lungs were underdeveloped at birth even though he was full term.and if he wasn't born in a hospital where he could be rushed to ICU he would be dead.so no,a home birth is not a good idea it could cost you and/or your child's life.and dont even get me started on the vaccines! i don't like this woman

I somewhat feel sorry for them, since we've been lied to so much by the pharmaceutical companies, with the help of the government, but my reasoning was that the chance of my daughter getting sick was higher than her chance of developing autism, and even if she did develop autism, she would still be alive. If I had a child who had many allergies, I might think twice, but with a healthy child, there was no doubt about my decision. I just wonder how many chemicals & what kind are in her ink? I have tattoos also, but if I was so "all natural" that I wouldn't even vaccinate, I sure wouldn't want to chance tattooing.
Your reasoning makes absolute sense but the autism MMR link has been thoroughly disproved now by physicians and scientists. Andrew Wakefield was found guilty by the General Medical Council of serious professional misconduct in May 2010 and was struck off the Medical Register, meaning he could no longer practice as a doctor in the UK. Wakefield's paper re the link between MMR and autism was described as "perhaps, the most damaging medical hoax of the last 100 years". Unfortunately he has merely moved elsewhere and is still endangering lives with his misinformation.

Just a little background so you can understand where I stand on this vaccination issue and why. I have two sons, born 5 years apart. They both had the same vaccinations. The older one shared top honors in his high school graduating class with another person. The younger one is another story all together. He was diagnosed being in the light to medium autism range by Emory University Autism Research Center at the age of 5. We were told that he might not ever be able to carry on an intelligible conversation. We refused to believe this diagnosis was 100 percent correct. As time went on, we proved them wrong. We discovered that he was hyper sensitive to most of the artificial color and preservatives in foods. It would cause extreme hyper-activity and combativeness. Because of this, I have read everything I could get my hands on that was publicly available. ALL of this research points toward a genetic defect that occurs before birth.

I don't think the birth itself might go wrong, but later if she refuse to breastfeed because it's not "vegan" ( I hate that tough, mammals are made to breastfeed whatever they eat plants or meat ) and the baby won't get the good stuff to increase the immunesystem ( aside if the baby in rare cases happen to be lactose intolerant ofc ). Also the vaccinations people usually get as babies, like Poliovaccines.
Lactose intolerance usually develops later so it is very rare condition if a baby can't drink breast milk.
I did briefly wonder about that, humans are just a type of animal after all. Apparently vegans do not consider human breastmilk non-vegan (though there may be the odd extremist exception) as the key difference is that humans are able to consent whereas animals are forced into it and there's usually inhuman practices associated with milking.
Lactose intolerance only applies to "I think" cow milk. I can drink goats milk fine and I'm lactose intolerant. So it wouldn't apply to human breast milk being fed to a human baby. On a somewhat similar note some other creatures can not even stomach cows milk but can be fine on goats milk for example.

Kat can have a midwife and be a vegan. That choice only affects her and her family. Vaccination affects everyone. The MOST unselfish thing a person can do is get vaccinated because you are trying to save an innocent person from getting a virus YOU might be carrying if you had NOT gotten vaccinated.

A doula is a special formof midwife. If you have one, you typically still have a midwife. The midwife would care rather for the medical things, at birth and for a few weeks after, tge doula might more holistically accompany pregnancy and first month with the child

A doula is not a what but a who- usually a woman who assists the midwife and perhaps helps care for the baby while the mother recovers from childbirth.
Not a midwife, but more like a midwife's helper. We were not able to have any family around when our child was born (everybody live far away), and the Doula was invaluable. Over the time that my wife was in labor I could grab something to eat, pick up some of the baby stuff, etc., and the Doula stayed around to help and advocate for my wife.

For the record: a vegan or plantbased diet has nothing to do whatsover with vaccinations. I am a vegan myself and wish to dissociate myself in the strongest way possible from the absolutely irresponsible and unscientific arguments used by the anti-vaccination movement. You might argue that it is "not vegan" to use a vaccin as it might be tested on animals, but this is the law for all medicins before they are used on humans (at least in Europe), so at this moment it is just not possible in certain cases to use products which are free from animal cruelty.

My daughter is vaccinated & has check ups every year and I'm proud of that among my "holistic" community. We are not vegan but that's because my lifestyle in the Yukon doesn't really allow for it... Striving to live a more natural lifestyle doesn't mean you have to give up common sense and put your children in harms way. I love that Kat von d is willing to try a natural birth and a midwife, but to not vaccinate proves she is a fool spoiled by western medicine.

I'm not anti VAX. I am anti multi VAX at one time. But they will not do that. I senew borns being given 6in 1 a few weeks after birth and that is not including MMR etc. We are overloading our babies with chemicals way before they even get a chance to build up any immune system. The problem with "autocratic leaders" is that they are the only ones to at least make a show of supporting their own country. Most people are against globalism and immigrants and preserving their cultural and national identity. To me if a politician is elected to serve country X he should serve country X and not corporate interests or globalism. Very, very few politicians care for their own countries and people.

Korea. What I see, for example, is that women could walk the streets dressed up as they like back in the 1980s and 1990s, but now everyone is about covering themselves for a variety of reasons/excuses, be it serious stuff such as street safety, to the most common banal feeling too fat, both of which are oppressive ends. Working women are now suddenly (to my eyes at least) seen as either brave or kinda guilty, while back in the day working women were seen as normal (but that might be also a cultural difference, now). Not to add the overall workers' rights seem to be deteriorating (in general). And the deletion of middle classes... Hmmh.... History repeats.

I had Gullian Barre syndrome, so I'm not allowed to have any vaccinations because there could be a reoccurance with certain vaccines. I am vulnerable to people's unvaccinated children. I was also born with an immune disorder and almost died several times as a child from illnesses that didn't have a vaccine yet. Vaccines don't cause autism. I'm autistic and so is my entire family. Vaccines don't always guarantee 100% immunity though. They significantly lower the chances of infection (and if you do get sick from something dangerous, you have better chances of survival). And that's why it's important to have as many people as possible vaccinated, especially when it comes to the safety of immunocompromised people.

I missed nearly a month of work due to WHOOPING COUGH! It was HORRIBLE and SCARY AF as an adult living alone. I cant imagine a child going through that. Not knowing if you will be able to catch your breath after the next round of coughing starts. It's not a little cough. You cough out EVERY SINGLE BIT OF AIR IN YOUR LUNGS WITHOUT ANY BREATH IN BETWEEN. You cant suck in any air or you trigger a spasm. So you suck in air as if through a coffee stirrer or cocktail straw until the PANIC stops. Then you sleep. Until it starts again. This time grasping the headboard for stability because your ribs hurt so badly- because you probably fractured it during a coughing spasm. Imagine an infant who has no idea what is going on. No idea how to sit up and do anything they can to get that tiny bit of air. You try it. Cough out ALL THE AIR TIL YOU CANT ANYMORE AND THEN HOLD THAT FOR ABOUT 30-45 seconds. Better yet, have someone sit on your chest as you gasp for air.

Those born in the 1960's and later have never lived through those terrifying pandemics of diseases that are now preventable by immunization, this makes it much easier to distance yourself from the REAL danger of the disease and focus on those tiny numbers of potential side-effects from the immunization itself. Talk to older people who lived through the horrible polio epidemics, or someone who had to watch a family member suffer and die from tetanus. My mother had polio as a child and is still suffering the side effects of the disease today, she considers herself lucky though since 2 of her classmates died. I went to H.S. with a girl who wore braces after suffering from polio as a child. She would never have the use of her withered legs. There were also kids with one withered arm. There were kids who ended up in iron lungs, because they could not breathe on their own. Then Dr. Salk came along with a vaccine. My daughter got her first dose on a sugar cube. She also had the MMR shots as an infant. Why would we even discuss returning to a time when children died of smallpox etc. or who were crippled by polio? Are our lives so boring that we have to invent things to bring about a health crisis? I was 36 when I contracted Whooping Cough from a child who was not vaccinated because I was in a "vaccination trough" (meaning I needed a booster). It was 4 months of hell, so I cannot imagine what it would be like for a child. To date, I now only have 75% lung capacity and may never fully recover. My life was massively impacted by anti-vaxxers. Please, it isn't just your kids who are affected, it is others because of the diseases they carry. Sure vaccination isn't a magic bullet that eradicates all diseases, but it helps.

I was a child of the 50's, BEFORE the polio vaccine. We had the March of Dimes March at school to contribute to the search for a vaccine to eradicate this paralyzing disease that often killed. Measles , mumps and chicken pox can leave you scarred for life. Pox marks from any pit your skin and few can ever lose the effects. You can go blind, deaf and have lasting consequences and problems from these diseases. We were so grateful vaccines were discovered and most children don't have to suffer these epidemics now. That is until there are those who think they know better. There is NO PROOF WHATSOEVER that even incidentally, any cause autism or anything else . They PREVENT.

Considering that human beings are omnivores there is nothing "natural" about being vegan, it's a choice made possible by modern technology and sensibilities. The natural thing is to eat whatever crosses your path, like other animals do, and not debate over the ethics of eating. I remember a little girl who attended a French-American school in SF where my daughter went. Her legs were covered with sores; she was bone thin. Finally, the school asked her parents to have her medically examined, because the sores were open and exposed. There might be a healthy way to practice veganism; if so, parents owe it to their children to find it. Enough advice from celebrities; get medical advice and have your child examined by a primary care doctor. You can live on Kale if you want to; you owe your child a healthy diet to have healthy bones, skin, muscles etc.

The kids who went to Disneyland from the Philippines were not vaccinated; they spread measles around. There were families there with infants, and toddlers. There was an outbreak of measles, a disease which impairs sight and hearing. As an immunocompromised person who cannot get vaccines, because of my condition they are all useless on me and don't work, I get hugely offended at anti-vaxxers, if they had any idea how much I would love to be able to get vaccines, and not be going through pneumonia for the 10th time in 6 years (yes right now), it's just insulting, extremely so. Vaccinations in others help keep people like me safe from disease, you are not just protecting yourself, you are helping protect your community and the people around you, and I've already had mumps twice, I don't need it a third time, or anything else preventable for that matter
