This Is What It Looks Like Standing Directly Under An Aurora
How beautiful! Once in a lifetime picture. Standing under those trees with their heavy snow load would worry me a bit however.
Aurora Borealis? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your kitchen?!?
Your eyes does not do it justice. This is seen through a camera able to take in more light than the human eye. It wont be anything near that, seen through your own eyes.

The Alternate Angles subreddit is dedicated to providing new angles “of iconic events and places in history beyond the traditional well known photos and videos.” And clearly, the group has been quite successful in their mission, as the community has amassed an impressive 160k members over the last 4 years. Some common flairs used in the group are Meta, Movies and Landmarks, but there’s no shortage of what you can find in the sub. From a photo of the inside of a piano to behind the scenes pics from famous film sets, Alternate Angles has it all.
We’re big fans of Alternate Angles here at Bored Panda, so this isn’t the first time we’ve featured the subreddit. And lucky for us, we were previously able to get in touch with the community’s moderator team to hear more about how the group came to be. “The origins are really quite simple,” one mod told Bored Panda. “A comment in another subreddit of famous pictures suggested that someone should create a sub of different views of famous pictures, which led to the creation of r/AlternateAngles by u/Murkon and another Redditor who [has since] decided to step down.”
One Of The Easter Island Moai Statues That Was Carved But Never Erected. It Would Have Stood 72ft Tall (The Tallest Standing Is 33ft High) And Weighed More Than 2 Boeing 737's. This Also Shows How The Figures Were Carved
Approx. 22 meters (the tallest standing is approx. 10 meters); two Boeing 737 weigh roughly 82 thousand kilograms.
The story behind these statues, the destruction of the island resources, and the eventual implosion of the culture who erected them is fascinating.
i’m not sure if anyone knows the answer to this but why were the statues made? was it some kind of memorial for a great person back then?
I wonder if they argued about artistic style. "Yours is too long in the face!", "You're really gonna go with that Deco BS?!", "Does my head actually look that square to you, seriously?!"
We see things like this and other monumental achievements by humans past and a significant portion of today's humanity stands in awe and wonderment of what they achieved and how they achieved it. Unfortunately, 1,000 or more years into the future, humanity looking back on us will stand around, scratching their heads, wondering What The F**k Were They Doing?.
We reached out to u/Murkon again for this piece, and they were kind enough to provide some updates on how the community has been since they last spoke with Bored Panda. "Subreddit has continued to grow!" the mod shared. "We get a lot of great submissions."
We were also curious about this moderator's favorite posts that they've seen shared in the community. "My personal favorite was originally that one taken before the Beatles crossed Abbey Road... But I've seen it so many times now I look forward to new stuff." The mod also shared how shocked they were when they realized how small the Mona Lisa is from an Alternate Angles pic.

Claude Monet In His Home Studio Painting One Of His Water Lily Paintings, 1920
not exactly that painting, but another big painting of him is in the Musée de l’Orangerie in paris, France :) other paintings by him are in the musée Marmottan :)
Load More Replies...I like how he has his couch there and everything. Seems like there would be more painting supplies though. Maybe he tidied them up for the picture. Lol. Also, pretty bold and presumptive starting out with a canvas that large. Wonder how long it took from start to finish. I always picture artists from those times outside with a little canvas on an easel. Lol.
I'm sure, he made several small paintings, before starting this one. Made several observations, several small plein air paintings to create this big. Usually it works like this.
Load More Replies...I know nothing about art, but I've always been fond of his works. They always make me feel happy. Wonder where this very large painting is.

Load More Replies...Like to see the model for the old logo from the 1920’s. (First just wrote the 20’s and realized I had to clarify the NINETEEN twenties. Lol)

Load More Replies...Is it just me or is the retouched final image slimmer and with a sexier pose?
Retouched image was stylized. That's not really the right word for it (I'm not an art person) but they basically messed around with the lighting and shadows to make it look less like a photo and more like a drawing/painting. Her hand is at a different angle and her hair has been cleaned up but nothing else was changed. Her arms/neck only look slimmer because of the dark shadows in the retouch. At least that's what my s****y eyes are seeing. Our arty pandas might know more.

As far as the concept of r/AlternateAngles goes, the moderators say it can be summed up by a single rule: “Limit all submissions to alternate views, or unique perspectives, of well known locations, items, people, and events. An alternate angle of your kitchen does not qualify but Gordon Ramsay's kitchen does."
And while it can be difficult to determine what exactly “well known locations” means, the moderators have a pinned post in the subreddit that aims to clear up any questions members might have. “A relatively well known person, place, event or item is something most of our viewers will recognize or know of,” the mods explain. “By well known item we mean something like the Mona Lisa (although seriously I think we can all agree we've worn that one out), the statue of David, a famous mummy, the handgun of a well known general, J.K. Rowling's writing chair, or Betty Crocker's apron.” They also kindly request (with a smile) that members please stop sharing photos of the Mona Lisa.

When it comes to moderating this community, the team previously shared with Bored Panda that it can be tricky trying to weed out photos that have been edited or faked. So sometimes they have to rely on “the fantastic and active user base to help out with those."
And while it’s challenging for the mods to choose any of their favorite photos from the group, as they “could have spent hours culling through thousands and thousands of posts to pick out more,” they shared a few of their favorites with us. One of the Lincoln Memorial before the reflecting pool, behind the scenes of the recording of Leo the Lion (the iconic MGM mascot), an alternate angle of one of the biggest tragedies in US history, and a rare view of the back panel of the Mona Lisa.

The last time we spoke with the Alternate Angles team, the moderators provided some insight into why the group continues to remain so popular over the years. “We are a unique subreddit that offers pictures that you don't normally see in other subs or the internet in general," they shared. “I think the fascination of, for example, the back frame of the Mona Lisa, is something most people never get to see.”
An Empty Boeing 787
I worked on the emergency air supply system for the 787 Dreamliner during it's inception. There was a kind of manufacturing war over the contract. We won it, but the result of the rush was concerning from a safety perspective. We (assembly technicians) brought it up repeatedly, and it's been decades since then, but the defects we experienced at the time were never really corrected, and I'm still not convinced that the activation of the single-use emergency oxygen systems won't result in conflagration.

Load More Replies...if i remember correctly, it was painted in the dining hall of a monastery
So, you're saying The Last Supper has seen a lot of suppers?
Load More Replies...Normally, I bet it's overcrowded with tourists. I once tried to get in. You have to book months in advance to be given a time window of 15 minutes. Perhaps they handle the booking situation a bit better now. When I tried it, you had to phone them. The line was always busy.
Until I read another article yesterday, I never realized that this was not painted on a canvas. And that the bottom of the painting was cut out to enable them to cut a door into the wall. This is a chapel and the reason that it is so empty is that only a few people can fit into it at a time and they let a new group in every 15 minutes. Empty to accommodate the tourists.
You need reservations to spend only 15 minutes in there. You can't have too many people in the room, as their breath causes more moisture in the air; which affects the paint on the wall. You are also NOT allowed to use artificial light to take a picture. So no flash allowed.
We almost got to see it. Walked quite a ways to get to where it is, then found out that you had to make a reservation to see it. We weren't going to be in Milan that long, there for business. I REALLY would have liked to have seen it. It would have meant a lot to me.

The mods also noted that they focus on keeping content in the group relevant to a wide variety of audiences. “We generally don't allow pictures of cats, dogs, food, and generic houses with some spin, but require famous artwork, people, monuments, or events—something everyone will recognize from all the famous photos that are published, but not from the perspective of the photo posted in our sub."
The Other Side Of The Moon Captured By Orion Spacecraft
The reason why it's so smooth looking is that a strong impact turned the former "darkside" of the moon towards Earth - that's why we see all the craters
Not so much a 'misnomer' as flat-out inaccurate. *Every* part of the moon is 'Dark Side' - every two weeks. Properly, it's 'Near Side' and 'Far Side'. (And no, there are no secret Nazi bases on the Far Side. Just talking cows, weird insects, and other odd anthropomorphics.)

The Alternate Angles subreddit is also fun for a wide variety of people because anyone can participate. The moderators explained that most of the photos shared “aren't from professional photographers, but instead by Joe Average with an iPhone instead of the latest and greatest digital camera.” Creativity is more important than having the best equipment. “It's those alternate angles that aren't well published that give people a unique perspective of a location, event, or artwork that they had never been made aware of,” the mods shared.

Load More Replies...Although the sub is certainly not in need of any more Mona Lisa photos, the mods used this famous painting as an example of why the group is so great. "Everyone can go on the internet and see a picture or travel to the Louvre Museum,” they explained. “It was at an odd time while they were fixing the location that a few people could see the back side for the first time. The same could be applied to taking a photo of the Statue of Liberty looking straight up or a photo of 9-11 from an amateur that hadn't been published before. I think people are fascinated by that.”

Load More Replies...Oh, yes. I remember the news last February when a train with dozens of railcars loaded with absolutely harmless vinyl chloride derailed, so every human being as far as a mile around was evacuated just for fun, and the contents of the railcarts burned with no consequences whatsoever for the environment.
Norfolk Southern needs to both completely pay for what they caused (the entire area is now unlivable in both Ohio and Pennsylvania.) and needs to cease to exist. Obviously, the US train industry needs to have many regulations restarted and increased.
Yes - there is in fact a city called East Palestine in the state of Ohio. I was quite confused too at first 😁😂
Many did have trouble breathing when they returned, and there were many reports of skin rashes as well. It's fallen out of the news here in Ohio, so I don't know what difficulties there still are for them.

Load More Replies...And as far as what does well in the group, one moderator told Bored Panda, "Personally, I feel the quality of the photo has little to do with the popularity but rather the uniqueness of the photo and perspective. The centering of the photo, the proper color gradient, and the perfect focus have little to do with popularity. I think also it is very subjective as to what users are interested in, however, the more unique the perspective plays a large part into how popular a post is."
The Golden Gate Bridge
I have never been there, but I think it's one of the best engineering marvels of the world.
It is, but i like the Forth Bridge (the railway one) better. Built in a time when the alternative to a train was a horse and cart.

I walked across the bridge....once. My acrophobia told me to never do that again.
Behind The Scenes Of Teletubbies
Found out recently that the actor inside tinky winky was a deeply depressed alcoholic. He died young. Poor guy. Definitely darkened the whole vibe for me
Or how little kids would go to hug the tv and it would fall on them. Old TVs, not the lighter new ones.
Load More Replies...The actors could hardly breathe when wearing the heads. They would wheel the heads around in wheelbarrows when the actors needed a break. Lucky the kids never got to see that, or they would have had nightmares...
I've worn partial fursuits before (just the head, tail, and paws) and I had ones that had built-in fans AND vents, plus the jaws could move so you could open your mouth to literally open the mask's mouth. I STILL overheated in just the partial suit. I cannot imagine what these actors went through - or what the actors in character costumes at amusement parks go through. I imagine modern costumes/suits have much better cooling and perhaps even built-in ice/water cooling systems, but just from my brief experiences wearing a partial fursuit mask... whoooof!

It’s been said that, “Many Comedians suffer from depression”. R.I.P Robin Williams
Conservatives in the US branded him gay, because he carried a purse. The color purple became untoward. I lived in Berkeley CA at the time - a very progressive small city - and they actually passed legislation to support Tinky Winky.

No. They don't want you to sell them. Someone sold their Academy Award ages ago (1940s?), so everyone made rules prohibiting it.
Load More Replies...My friend has several of these in her house. Her husband is a sound mixer for TV shows.
Good for him! Editors are so under-appreciated.
Load More Replies...This is basically a "contract in perpetuity", and its value in the USA would be debatable. If someone would challenge this, it is likely it would be made void by one or more of the following. 1) The law against perpetuity limit the duration of the contract to 21 years after the death of someone alive during the contract issuing. Without going into technicalities, this would reasonably limit the overall span of the contract to 130 years or so. 2) This contract would likely constitute an "unreasonable restraint" to the rights of the heirs to alienate a good well beyond the deadline for adverse possession. 3) It's unlikely the initial contract inbetween the Emmy and the original recipient would translate to heirs without any kind of formal acceptance or renegotiation.
Thank you for reminding me about the rule against perpetuity. Let the nightmares about getting disbarred commence.
Load More Replies...Yes, they can. The awardee has to sign a contract before they get the statuette.

Climbing Mount Everest : The Queue At Khumbu Icefall
I'm a climber and I think this is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. Really, what's the purpose of this?
To prove you're unique and can do what no one else can. Just like the others in the picture...
Load More Replies...That beautiful mountain is, in my opinion, is being disgustingly abused. It should be shut down to climbers for 10 years, cleaned up and left alone for a while.
This looks absolutely miserable. Everest should not be a theme park for unexperienced climbers as it creates incredibly dangerous situation like this that also destroy the environment. There really needs to be regulations in place that limit the number of people that can climb each based on experience level. There are places on Everest where there is so much trash and the bodies of dead climbers.
If they roped everyone together the weight of those coming down could counterbalance those going up, then you could do it at a run.
Most sensible approach to this ridiculousness I read so far 😂
Load More Replies...I had jo idea so many people would want to do this, I thought that if you were climbing mt everest you might see a couple of others along the way but they'd be about it.

Load More Replies...Well, the orang would not have lived so long in her/his natural environment. And funnily enough, the orang probably thinks the people are there to entertain them. They are interested in humans and love to interact with them.
In the Jersey zoo they are right. There is human children's playground opposite the gorillas enclosure. Human parents fondly imagine this is to give their kids something to look at. It's not, it's to amuse the gorillas with the antics of juvenile homo sapiens
