A lot of people like the idea of having a cozy, beautiful, and comfortable home. But with this dream comes a lot of hard work and serious challenges. Even though the most common way that people who want to become owners of a place do so is buying it, there are other ways to get the place. Some people are lucky enough to have relatives who help them with the purchase or they inherit it. But even after you become a legal owner of the house, there are a lot of other things to take into consideration. Reddit user @Sadhouse27 decided to share her experience of becoming a house owner and how this fact probably cost her her friendship.

The 28-year-old woman shared that she has a friend who was lucky enough to get a two-story house that was bought for her and her partner by her parents. The woman revealed that she would spend a lot of time there helping them to move or just hanging out. The author of the post emphasized that she was happy for her friend and also revealed that she became a house owner herself after she inherited a house from her parents.

Having in mind her new living situation, she asked the same friend to come with her shopping as the house she was moving into was old and needed new appliances. While they were looking for things, an employee came to help them out, as the woman wanted to know some information about some of the things, such as toasters and kettles, before deciding what to buy. The employee was polite enough to start a simple conversation, so he asked if the woman was moving, to which she replied yes. The employee then carried on with the conversation and asked if she bought the place or rented it. Without going much into detail, she said that she bought it. That was enough to know for him, so he started talking about more relevant things to the woman when her friend decided to add some things to the conversation.

But she was soon corrected by her friend who added that she had inherited the house

It seems that the friend found it important to clear some things up and told the employee that the woman actually had inherited the place and not bought it, adding that she was the one who bought her house. Both the employee and the woman got confused. The author of the post then asked her friend why this was even important now when she just wanted to shop for things she needed without telling some stranger about her life. The friend said that this was just told “for the record,” and these words and the whole situation really annoyed the woman.

After this, the woman then shared that in fact, her friend didn’t buy the house herself, but got it from her parents

After this, the woman then replied to her that since they are telling things, she reminded her friend that her parents were the ones who bought her house. This remark made the friend leave the store. After she was chased down, the friend called the author of the post “a massive a**hole” for revealing that she can’t afford her own home by herself. The woman then pointed out that in a way, her parents also helped her too but not how she wanted them to, disclosing that she received the house after they died.

The author of the post wanted to know how others online saw this situation as her own friends were divided

The woman ended the story by stating that her partner thinks she was right in this situation while all of their friends are divided on the matter, so this is why she is asked if she was in the wrong. A lot of people online expressed their support towards the author of the post, stating that her friend shouldn’t have started this and that she might just show her true colors.

My daughters boyfriend has been saying little things like this to her. He's been saying stuff like you don't have to work idk why you're tired or your parents give you money you didn't earn it. It's really pissing me off bc she does earn her money and she does work hard. She's a singer songwriter and she has a regular singing gig every week and has a few students she teaches as well as takes online classes. She has struggled w ocd her whole life and my husband and I have been extremely supportive bc that's what she needs. I don't think she'll ever have a 9to5 that's not who she is. We have our own business and she also helps me when needed but it's not her thing. Really makes me mad when people discount others bc it's not what they choose or they are mad bc they can't choose.

It really doesn't matter how someone gets a house as long as they have somewhere to live. People in this world don't realize how blessed they are to have a home at all and then have stupid little squabbles. I think all of this drama is why I don't have a lot of friends.

Yeah, that smirk/grin was "dupper's delight" One of the comments suggested that the "friend" may have opened the door, but that OP chose to walk through it. And that's just it. The "friend" having spent some "quality supply time" with OP was betting on her better judgment (and potential humiliation) to stay quiet, SO THAT she could* have that moment of "better than", even under false pretenses. This reeks to me, and if she (or anyone having "friends" like her) continues the friendship, the toxicity will merely pile up before ending very badly.

Anyone who says "ESH" is the type of person who takes crap from people and doesn't say anything. The friend got mad because they got called out. I'll bet that friend is constantly trying to undervalue people to make themselves seem superior.

I'm hoping this post will teach the young people reading it what is appropriate behaveour. Ofciurse OP is NTA. She doesnt owe anyone a deescalation of the situation, she is not a psychotherapist nor a social worker, she is not a emotional support animal, or babysitter who takes punches from the spoiled kid. The employee asked whether the woman is renting or buying so he can try to figure out what kind of appliances to offer to her. And her son called friend didnt even read that and for apsolutely no reason went on a string of thoughts so she can talk about how she can afford to buy a house. No she cant, and maybe her parents cant ether and had to take a mortgage or a loan to help out.maybe even the parents of her partner chipped in etc...this is what narcissism looks like folks. When you see it,run in the opposite direction as fast as you can.

It was clear from the title, confirmed throughout the article: Both 28yr olds reached adulthood without maturing. It's simply impossible to dodge these people permanently. it's important to remember that when your livelihood or education are dependent on the outcome of interactions with them, assume the mental age of the person you are interacting with is half of their physical age. Be prepared!

People who use their friend's tragedy to feel superior aren't simply AHs. No, that would imply that they're worthy of quick redemption. People like that are the same ones who believe rules don't equally apply to them, and that makes them toxic. I would believe it if OP described how this woman would expect her friends to pay for lunch out but always had a justification for why she shouldn't be expected to pay once in a while. This isn't a friend, this is a social leech. Using other people's misfortunes to lift herself up and too quick to air everyone else's dirty laundry. I hope the OP dumps this terrible friend.

First the employee even though this person was making small talk it wasn’t his or her business. The friend definitely was wrong to interrupt and say anything regarding how the house was acquired it is not the business of the employee and definitely not her business to tell.

I'm on the side of the woman that was the shopper, not the "friend" she had come with her, whom had decided to humiliate her. That smug grin part would upset me, telling a random employee about my personal business would upset me, and having had her parents die and inheriting their house, is not something that is pleasant. It's painful. So, the friend, whose parents bought her a house, is not worth having as a friend. The trust has been broken and it would be very hard to ever have that again. I would've probably have let the big brat run off, out of the store. I wouldn't chase after her. Just keep shopping.

NTA, this is ridiculous! All the people who would do this don't matter and the ones who truly care for you THIS won't matter to them! How dare she act as such an elitest when in fact SHE was the one who not only PROVED she was an A**hole but also showed you her TRUE colors and this could have saved you a lot of heart ache down the way. It's not cool acting better than people but it tells what kind of human you are when you not only put your "friends" business out to strangers but belittle over YOUR situation!! To me there is a huge difference between INHERITING and having mommy and daddy pay for it!! I know some said she opened the door and you walked through, in my eyes we all should stand up for ourselves and being like THAT. Living in this day of ACCOUNTABILITY as they say, she should probably not throw stones living in a glass house, she could lose what she has real quick, Karma is a b*tch sometimes YOU ARE NOT CRAZY though girl, just need a better friend 💕

Where is the appreciation and gratitude by either friend for the fact that millions of Americans two and three times their age pay rent every month and live in places that are substandard and can't be renovated because it is coat prohibitive for the occupant as a tenant. Instead of basking in their good fortunes they are engage in this pettiness? They sound like twonself entitled posers who would never be homeowners if it were left to their own devices. I blame our politicians for not making homeownership more accessible to all Americans. They are too busy taking cash and gifts from landlords.

There are enough comments about how ridiculous it is to write about 2 young adults arguing over who owns their house in the right way... so let's talk about BP's policy of letting anyone write for them. This was an incomprehensible, ridiculous format. Section header with too much information, followed by a quote, followed by an explanatory paragraph- all of which say the same thing. How does that flow?? You're re-reading the same info when you are expecting it to advance... If you don't want to hire writers, at least employ AN editor.

Uhh dudes tend to. But we tend to go for absurd to either make you so mad you laugh or make you plot revenge. Guys will do it often but most try to avoid actually setting off the target or do emotional damage. However what she did was more of the just mean phrasing. Seems her friend would hand her friend a tampon when she's chatting with a guy at a club saying I got the extra wide so you don't have to find me later for your issue.

What bizarre behavior! Why would the 'friend' feel compelled to put her friend's business out, like that?! It has nothing to with purchasing appliances.

This friend Is not a friend. She's a major A hole. She can dish it out, but when it comes back on her, she goes all Karen on her friend. I say flush it, and go listen to the Joan Jett song, Fake friends, because that's what this woman is.

The clerk only wanted to know if she owned the house or was renting. It is irrelevant on how she got the house.

Anyone who says "ESH" is the type of person who takes crap from people and doesn't say anything. The friend got mad because they got called out. I'll bet that friend is constantly trying to undervalue people to make themselves seem superior.

I also have a friend whose parents bought her a house. She proudly tells everyone "yeah, my house is paid off". And I'm thinking - you never paid a cent towards it.

I inherited the house my dad grew up in. He paid the mortgage off 5 years before he died, and it passed to my sister and me once my mom passed. I am not embarrassed about that.

Friend is the a'hole. All the employee needed to know is own or rented as you can do things in your home you can't in a rented. Also being pissed about exposure she couldn't buy a house by herself? She didn't buy the house at all.

Please stop being petty and critical of each other it's not worth losing a friendship over be kind remember it doesn't cost a dime.

This is a teaching experience for retail people to be more circumspect. "Own or rent?" is how the question should be posed. The woman who asserted "the record" was a thing is a toxic c***.

So what, it's the employees fault? Or do you prefer your customer service to be drab and monotone and clear that they are only there to collect a check? More power to you. Most people actually enjoy a more down to earth chat with the employees that help them

I don't think it's awkward that you inherited a house, I mean that's amazing congratulations! Many people don't own houses. Your friend seems to be a bit jelly though and maybe thinks the timing was off/planned so you could one up her. Some people do think like that, sorry dear. But congratulations on the new house anyway!
