If you have ever retrieved a damaged suitcase after a flight, this video might shed some light on what might have happened to it. Vanessa Marsh shared a recording on Twitter, showing every plane passenger’s worst nightmare – an airport employee throwing their luggage like a piece of trash instead of letting it gently slide down the chute. The woman throws them down, not even mildly concerned about breaking passengers’ belongings.
After Vanessa’s video gained more than 40k views, Hawaiian Airlines posted a reply, promising to look further into the situation. However, the people were still outraged, demanding they fire the employee. This is the perfect example of 'zero fucks given'. Usually I try to justify bad behavior, I try to understand, and I guess she's sick of everything and she just doesn't care anymore. Or she's just lazy as fuck.

I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. I'm guessing she's had it out with management asking why she has to lift each case over a railing that's so much higher than the belt but was told "too bad, bend over and lower each case individually and if your back hurts because of it, then find a new job" and she's like "I'm sorry, but I'm not breaking my back over this. Fuck it". Still not the best solution, but I doubt her actions came out of absolutely nowhere.
Honestly, to me, based on where she's putting her hands on the railing, it looks like the railing really does go all the way across in front of the chute. This really does look like bad ergonomics. Sorry, I know this is going to be unpopular, but that's what it looks like to me! I can't blame the employee for that.

Why blame the worker? IT's the airline that doesn't give a fuck about your luggage. If they did, they'd invest is a moving ramp (a conveyor belt) to lower the luggage down. Then the worker would PLACE the luggage at the top of the moving ramp and the luggage would ride the ramp down to the bottom. Is that what the Airline provides? No, so it's the airline who's to blame not the worker. My guess, if you gently set the luggage on the ramp at top, there's a change it would stick there. By inserting it farther down the ramp (where it's steeper) it has more momentum and there for, for sure, makes it down the ramp. You are sadly out of touch if you think any employee would gentle set the bag down and waif it down the ramp with a silk hanky. Bottom line, buy sturdy not designer luggage and pack like it's going to be thrown off the plane.

This is pretty standard across the industry and they don't hide it. Every time I've seen workers loading or unloading a plane, they are just throwing cases around and sometimes they fall off of the conveyor and get thrown right back up there. If you travel a lot or carry anything fragile, pack for rough treatment and invest in hard suitcases.
I was stationed in Hawaii for three years. When it came time for me to PCS (permanent change of station) the Hawaiian movers walked around my barracks room and kept asking me if they could have my stuff. 'I'm moving, not dying. You can't have anything. Just pack and load it please.' I couldn't believe how unprofessional these guys were.

I've seen videos of airport employees who through luggage down because otherwise they'd have to walk up and down a flight of stairs...although still reprehensible, at least the motive was understandable. This woman, however, had an easily accessibly ramp inches away. What possible excuse could she have for flinging them? Ridiculous.

I have had suitcases with huge scuff marks on them and it clearly shows the bag has been thrown and not treated well. in my job as a nurse , which is also a hard job, I would never treat my patients or their property with such disrespect. It costs a lot of money to travel, and our luggage should be treated carefully, If she doesn’t like her job then she should complain to her employer not toss passengers bags in her contempt.

I feel that this is how everyone should expect their bags to be treated. The staff is on a timeline to unload, reload, and taking time to carefully handle everyone's 50-100lb bag is not a luxury the staff are permitted. If the airline cared, there would be a conveyor belt, rather than that tube.

Where have you been all these years if you think this is something new?! This has been going on for ages, for years, maybe even decades (a bit of an exaggeration). This is why the airlines take no responsibility on about the state of your suitcase. And this is why when you buy a suitcase with a warranty, it doesn't cover this kind of "injuries".
People should develop a better way to transport the luggage. Maybe create a conveyor or something?
Can we put some blame on whoever made that slide? Make it curve around, adding an extra 2ft of tube would save the luggage and the worker's back.

The top of the ramp isn't high enough to set them down. Also, without tossing them, they wouldn't side down the ramp. However - there's no doubt that she's union and nothing will change. See the mirror? Not just for safety. It's to see if any management is coming...Years ago a manager at US Air was telling me how they kept catching a baggage handler sleeping on the job but the union saved him from being fired three times. This is why the union refuses to allow cameras in work areas that would prevent theft and workers like this.
I can feel for the owners of the mistreated luggage. I bought luggage used it once and it looked like it had years of wear on it. Used it again for a HI trip and had to buy new luggage while there because it had burst open and had to be taped shut. The new luggage had busted wheels by the time I got the new luggage home and looked like it was dragged behind the cart from the plane to the luggage carousels.
Note to self: In case of ever travelling to Hawaii write in capitals "NO US-CITIZEN" on your luggage.

I see nothing unexpected...the perks of travelling with carry-on bags is just great. Plus: not a single person has ever checked the weight of my carry on bag, so just go ahead and stuff it full...and when moving and lifting it just go about it like it is filled with air :D

Years ago, when I travelled back home to Croatia from Korea for Christmas, the bag had more presents than my own stuff. Sure, this is the USA, we're talking about here, but you get the point. Also, some people might be moving there, which also requires lots of luggage.

Almost every store I've ever been to, including tiny little mom and pop artisans in Japan will ship anything you buy anywhere you want for a fee. Where have you been all these years if you think this is something new?! This has been going on for ages, for years, maybe even decades (a bit of an exaggeration). This is why the airlines take no responsibility on about the state of your suitcase. And this is why when you buy a suitcase with a warranty, it doesn't cover this kind of "injuries".
People should develop a better way to transport the luggage. Maybe create a conveyor or something?
Can we put some blame on whoever made that slide? Make it curve around, adding an extra 2ft of tube would save the luggage and the worker's back.

The top of the ramp isn't high enough to set them down. Also, without tossing them, they wouldn't side down the ramp. However - there's no doubt that she's union and nothing will change. See the mirror? Not just for safety. It's to see if any management is coming...Years ago a manager at US Air was telling me how they kept catching a baggage handler sleeping on the job but the union saved him from being fired three times. This is why the union refuses to allow cameras in work areas that would prevent theft and workers like this.
I can feel for the owners of the mistreated luggage. I bought luggage used it once and it looked like it had years of wear on it. Used it again for a HI trip and had to buy new luggage while there because it had burst open and had to be taped shut. The new luggage had busted wheels by the time I got the new luggage home and looked like it was dragged behind the cart from the plane to the luggage carousels.
Note to self: In case of ever travelling to Hawaii write in capitals "NO US-CITIZEN" on your luggage.

I see nothing unexpected...the perks of travelling with carry-on bags is just great. Plus: not a single person has ever checked the weight of my carry on bag, so just go ahead and stuff it full...and when moving and lifting it just go about it like it is filled with air :D

at the end of the day, the loading/unloading system was designed to accomodate this... maybe if they but a shroud around the ramp and bags could only be placed into the ramp it would operate differently and this would not happen. ...
i don't see a problem with this. you expect your bag to be treated like a baby? what's she supposed to do, bend at the waist an gently place every bag on the slide like she's a kindygarten teacher sliding little darlings on the play equipment? the bags are fine. buy a sturdy bag and pack it well.

Why is anyone surprised? Though I've watched bag loading in other airports that doesn't look like this. One bag at a time is pretty inefficient.

And this is why you never, ever check luggage. If I can pack for a week in Paris with only a small backpack and a regulation sized rollaboard, ANYONE can pack for a week in Hawaii. What do you need in Hawaii? A couple of swimsuits, shorts, sandals and a few t-shirts. NO ONE dresses up there.
Good point. But there are people with checked luggage filled with presents for their families, for example. Years ago, when I travelled back home to Croatia from Korea for Christmas, the bag had more presents than my own stuff. Sure, this is the USA, we're talking about here, but you get the point. Also, some people might be moving there, which also requires lots of luggage.
I was talking about Korea, not Japan. Also, Croatia is a wee country in a galaxy far away, and I don't wanna risk bad timing and missing presents for an important holidays. Besides that, what makes you think the shipping staff won't throw those boxes the same way this employee throws bags?
That's the beauty of overseas shipping. Don't carry that stuff, fercryinoutloud! Almost every store I've ever been to, including tiny little mom and pop artisans in Japan will ship anything you buy anywhere you want for a fee. There are some problems that are completely solvable by throwing a few bucks at them - so throw the bucks.

You can pack for a week with a small backpack? I can't imagine. I like fresh socks, shirts and undies every day (because I'm not an animal), I like toiletries, and, you know, the things you need to not be a slob. If you are 4'11 and going to a tropical beach where you need only a bathing suit, maybe. Any other circumstance? Not a chance.
You chose not to read my post. One carry on rollaboard and a small pack that fits neatly under the seat in front of me. No problem. I have NEVER been asked to check one of my bags.
Those bags were carry on items. The reason they're being checked is because there's no room on the smaller planes for them so they force people to check their carry on items.
Sorry, does this surprise you? That's why they are called "throwers." It's been their standard practice since the air travel became mass transit. Never wondered why suitcases have to be made that strong?

I think the problem is in the heads of most tourists. You seriously need a suitcase for a week's holiday? People think they are traveling but instead they are bringing their home habits with them. Less luggage and more open-mindedness would solve most of their "problems".

Wait one! half of those bags wouldn't slide down that ramp if they were just placed there and pushed. Then is she supposed to climb down for each one and push it again? It's easy to criticize the girl but if you look closer this is a failure of management get her the equipment she needs to do it right.
