Woman Shows How “Harry Potter” Characters Were Supposed To Look According To Book Descriptions (35 Pics)
Interview With ArtistWhen comparing books and their movie adaptations, books almost always prove to be better. One of the reasons is that a film does not always manage to convey the same imagery as a book in which emotions are blended with visuals. When reading, one can form a completely different image of a place or a character and have entirely another general feeling of a story.
When creating a film adaptation, the cast is usually chosen according to the characteristics described in a book. However, the looks are not always so precise. With that in mind, one Vietnamese woman (to her followers known as MsBananaAnna) decided to use artificial intelligence to see what Harry Potter characters would look like based on book descriptions.

Sirius Black
Not that Gary Oldman isn't a brilliant actor but yes I prefer this Sirius more.
Confession: I've been SO disappointed in the movie Sirius. I always imagined this over-confident hotshot jock. Whereas the guy in the movie was more of a "guy next door" type. At least in my eyes.
You're not wrong. My sister and I would cast the movies with our dream lineups based on what we'd read. We always thought Johnny Depp would've made a good Sirius and John Cusack would've been a good Lupin - both seemed more in line with the characters than Gary Goldman and David Thewlis (who, while an AMAZING Shame Wizard on Big Mouth/Human Resources, never really had the swagger or warmth that Lupin was supposed to exude)
Load More Replies...Ive seen a lot of tumblr/pinterest edit/post using ben barnes as sirius black, then aaron taylor-johnson as james potter, gosh they look stunning as hell together (I kinda forgot people who got edited as remus and peter, sorry)
Load More Replies...Bored Panda got in touch with the author of this idea to learn more about her and this project. The woman revealed that she's a 28-year-old "nerd" living in Melbourne. She has been a huge "Potterhead" since grade school. "I basically grew up with Harry, Ron, and Hermoine and remember waiting in line at midnight for the release of each book."
Fleur Delacour
I wouldn't say "better", but more accurate. The actress who played Fleur is pretty, but didn't seem fit.
Load More Replies...Her hair should be more of a silvery blonde. And why does it look like she just came in from the beach?
While this picture is a nice difference from the movie version, the impression I got about her hair was a much more classic, polished style.
I agree, since those bullies are usually the prettiest, however Fleur is supposed to be a bit of a bully in the way she treats others. So the image is not so far from the book. That said, she is not suitable because she has the air of a mischievious elf, fairy-like but she's missing refinement and grace in her facial features and her eyes.
Load More Replies...Nymphadora Tonks
Anybody could be Tonks. Maybe you are just a version of Tonks.
Load More Replies...Correct. I literally gat offended for her when people call her that
Load More Replies...She was my favorite character I wish there was more about her in the books and movies
Fun fact: they made her hair purple in the movies because they wanted pink to be associated with trash
Wait what? Trash? I'm sorry, why would pink be associated with trash? I feel like I'm missing something, this needs more explanation lol
Load More Replies..."Bright pink (bubble gum) hair" was in the description. That's how I always imagined her. With the exception of when she changed her look. In the mobile game "Hogwarts Mystery" hit it pretty spot on.
Tonks is my favorite character I wish I could change my hair color in an instant & not need bleach or hair dye plus she's just a bada$$
YES I AM FINNALY MEETING PEOPEL WHO SHARE THE SAME FAVORITE CHARACTER WITH ME U ARE SO RIGHT
Load More Replies...My Favorite Charecter! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPRETTTTTTTTTTTTYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
"I came up with the idea to recreate the characters when I tried to find some fanworks of Hermione. I watched the movies and though I like Emma Watson, I always thought she was too gorgeous to be Hermione. I couldn't find any renditions of her that I thought were accurate so I ended up making her myself. People seemed to enjoy it so much that I decided to make more characters."
Severus Snape
Well his mom was a pure blood and all pureblood were related
Load More Replies...I think the biggest difference is that Snape was supposed to be significantly younger than the actor that played him.
Load More Replies...I agree. I love Rickman as Snape. I actually think having older actors to play characters like Snape, Black and Lupin even makes sense. Why? All of these characters had things in their lives (spying, Death Eater activities, bwar, Azkaban, being a werewolf, etc) that could likely cause premature aging. They'd all lived a hard life and things like that put a strain on a person's mind and body. Now the ones who should of been played by younger actors are James and Lily. They would of been 21 when they died and while yes they would of also had the stress of war and worry of Voldie being after Harry it was for a much shorter time than what the others dealt with so they should have looked closer to their age even early/mid 20's would of been better instead of looking in their 40's.
Load More Replies...Tom Riddle
Handsome and dangerous. Yes, it works, but it's a bit too obvious. The actor in the movie was perfect - spectacularly handsome, and only looked nasty when he was taking his mask off.
I thought the actor was a little too creepy and obviously evil. The msg i always got was how likeable and gorgeous he was, didn't think they cast it well.
Load More Replies...i think he looks like louis partridge more myself
Load More Replies...This is exactly what I imagined he looked like when I was reading the books
While some characters look similar to the ones one sees in the movies, others look nothing like them. For MsBananaAnna, Sirius was the one she personally liked the most. "I thought that was plucked straight from my head. Artbreeder can be pretty limiting in what you can do and can be a bit twiddly so not all of the characters came out as I wanted, but I thought Sirius came out as I imagined him! Dark and regally handsome."
Lily Potter
Sure they give her realistic looking green eyes, while giving Harry those florescent orbs.
I don't know if it's just fan interpretation, but in fan fiction he has those bright "killer curse green" eyes. So they're the same green as the ak
Load More Replies...Harry is supposed to have her eyes. Judging from the Harry pic: nope
Didn't she have red hair? This is the darkbrown version of strawberry blonde.
Narcissa Malfoy
Wasn't her description something like: she made a face as if she constantly smelled manure. Or something similar. I didn't read the first books in English, so my version might be different.
Load More Replies...The recreations of Harry Potter characters got a lot of attention on Reddit (here and here) where MsBananaAnna (or, as she calls herself on Reddit, lettuceown) posted them.
What looks are your favorites? Leave a comment and let us know!
Argus Filch
Was your uncle secretly a magic school janitor?
Load More Replies...Yeah this would work but the actor in the movie was every bit as good. Either one
Ginevra Weasley
Not too bad, I don’t think she was casted well in the movies anyways.
I agree but I think a lot of why I feel that way is because book Ginny was so, so much better than movie Ginny. They took away so much of what really made her a great character in the books. (Although I will always feel that Rowling forced the relationship between Harry and Ginny just to be contrary to expectations!)
Load More Replies...Those freckles need a bit of work, they look like she's been fiddling with her dad's car…
Or like blackheads at least on her forehead
Load More Replies...This AI does terrible job on freckles. I don't know anyone with freckles that look like these.
I absolutely love this Ginny. My only complaint about the Ginny in the movies though is that there just wasn’t much of her in them
Yah, I had a younger-looking Kate Bush in my mind reading the books :-)
Load More Replies...Beautiful, intelligent, wilful, not realizing how lovely she is because of a shower of freckles. Much better than the girl in the movies. In fact, pretty much Ginny as I wanted her to be.
Yeah, bonnie is also not how i imagined her to look like either. She was supposed to be real prettyy even slytheryn guys had started to gossip about her beauty. But there wa smore to her then her pretty face, in the movie they didnt let her have any scenes, all of a sudden harry fell in love eith her. It came out of the blue. She didt seem ans special and they didnt have many moments together that shiwed what led hary to like her. She was just an ok looking girl who played quidditch ans was eons little sis in the movies
Load More Replies...And it doesn’t even look like freckles. It looks like dirt. Freckles are cute. These are not cute.
Load More Replies...Cho Chang
Her name though. 🤦♀️ When every other girl has a nice / interesting / exotic name the only Asian girl has the worst most stereotypical name going.
Only a person who does not know anything about chinese culture would say that. There is a great thread in reddit about her name. Not only its a really common name but its also beautiful. Her name means Autumn.
Load More Replies...Wow everyone was hating on everyone in this comment thread. So much hate, everyone needs a hot cocoa and a cookie
Charlie Weasley
Still upset there was not more of him. He works with dragons! Dragons!! He looks handsome in this recreation, too.
My hope is that in 10 years or so, they make a tv series from the books. Each book is a season. 🙏🤞 Then!! We can see dragons.
Load More Replies...Where was Charlie in the movies again? Maybe one second of the final cut. He should've been given more attention honestly.
The earring was on Bill Weasley, Charlie's older brother.
Load More Replies...You don’t know how to give someone freckles and I think he should be thinner.
Lucius Malfoy
So if they reboot, Tom Felton would be an Accurate Lucius.
Load More Replies...apparently it was Jason Isaac's idea to have long hair for that very reason.
Load More Replies...Well, Draco's face is described as "pointy" in the books, and his father is said to look almost exactly like him, so at least in case of the Malfoys it's good. Don't know about the rest, probably just aesthetic view of the artist.
Load More Replies...All that hanging about with the Death Eaters and dark magic has corrupted him from the inside.
Load More Replies...Oh, sh*t..... If the eyes were brown and there was a huge scar over his left face to his right eye, then it would be 100% be me in real life... it's like looking at a mirror.... like Creepy on point... Even my stubble.... like this is actually freaky...
Hermione Granger
But her parents are dentists, so wouldn't her teeth have been fixed?
I get the casting of Emma Watson when she was young, but she grew out of the look...
For the people saying her teeth aren't big enough, if they were bigger she'd look like a caricature.
Has Hermione never brushed her teeth? Her parents are dentists! And she's too young to have them so yellow. Unless she's an 11 year old with a serious coffee habit.
I always thought the movies got less and less accurate when it came to Hermione....they completly abandoned the bushy hair after about the third movie.....
I dont think she was meant to look like an ugly humanoid troll though ..she was described as somewhat nerdy with shaggy hair, thats all.. As the stories progressed she actually was described to have grown into herself quite beautfilly, prompting Ron to like her.. I think this is probably the worst rendition of your characters.. But I do think some other portrayels of some characters are pretty accurate..
Remus Lupin
Doesn't he look a bit too old? Lupin was like 38 or so when he died and this guy here doesn't like 38. Though it could make sense since he's a werewolf
They also say he looked older than he was due to the stress of transforming.
Load More Replies...First of all, I think that David Thewlis was the BEST person to play lupin, as he is one of my fav character, with fred and hermione.
No he wasn't. He was easily one of the worst casting choices those movies made.
Load More Replies...why the hell does this kinda remind me of an older prince hans??
Harry Potter
Really badly drawn 3D anime Harry who's been bitten by a radioactive snake.
Load More Replies...Isn't the eye color a bit extreme? I also want Harry to have green eyes, but couldn't it look more natural?
Maybe, however Harry was supposed to have eyes that were startlingly green,
Load More Replies...the eyes that's what pissed me off most in the movie!! yess he was allergic to contacts but STILL!!
You'd think they'd find another brand of contacts...or use cgi...considering what an important plot point the green eyes were.
Load More Replies...The Potterhead community will never forget about Harry's eye color LOL.
Most definitely what I imagined. I love the eye color!
Load More Replies...What the ... why are his eyes so fking green, like luminescent green? Was he part-cat or something?
Luna Lovegood
From what Evanna Lynch has said Luna was pretty much written for her by terf McTerfface
Load More Replies...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣this comment was not appreciated enough! I died😅😅
Load More Replies...Her eyes are described as huge in the books. Harry thinks she looks like an owl. Like Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch did a great job, but she's much prettier than the character is supposed to be.
Load More Replies...The actress who played her was a huge fan of the books who struggled heavily with anorexia, and Luna was her favorite character. Rowling met her at a book signing and told her if she "beat" anorexia, she could play Luna in the movies. It meant so much to her to play the role.
I thought the girl in the movies was a bit too pretty for her. This pop-eyed little person looks just like she is about to say something entirely bizarre. Just right.
Why does she look like a child when she's 15-17 years old in the books?
Draco Malfoy
He looks like he could also be a bit inbred which is also accurate.
Load More Replies...So will mine and I don't even know my bio father
Load More Replies...a) Resting A$$ Face? b) Resting *uck face? c) Resting *uckboy face? no wait... d) Resting Duck Face? e) Resting R@p3 Face? lol I dunno... I'm high
Neville Longbottom
Yes, I vaguely remember the book describes him having blond/light-colored hair.
Rather better than the actor in the movie. This guy does look nervous and plump, but he does not look moronic.
Fred And George Weasley
Weasleys* Apostrophes aren't used to make plurals.
Load More Replies...sooo just because they are twins we only get one picture? Even "identical" twins don't really look 100% identical
Can confirm; my sister has identical twins.....but they're only 1 year old so I don't know what they'll look like when they grow up.
Load More Replies...Lord Voldemort
Slits for pupils! SLITS! LIKE A SNAKE? How many times is this mentioned in the book?
I thought in the books it mentioned his eyes being red. But in this picture they're blue like the movies
actually if you look closer it's red with slits like snakes
Load More Replies...James Potter
I noticed that. In fact this particular James Potter looks like the main character from one of my favorite romance novels. (Bowie Callahan from "Serenity Harbor", who has a younger brother who has autism. I love the Haven Point series by RaeAnne Thayne. It's my favorite Muggle literature.) But I digress.
Load More Replies...Too modern of glasses, they need to be in 80s style. (The hp books were set in the 90s so the potters died in the 80s)
He does look insufferable!! Excellent job, that's the #1 thing I got about him from the book. Well done, you.
He looks like he’s a tech bro a little bit here, like he’s about to trap me in a conversation about NFTs or something 😂
Ronald Weasley
those eyes are boring into my soul please stop smiling like that ron!
NO Ron in the movies was PERFECT. I love the actors facial expressions. He was my favorite of the famous trio
Suit yourself.. Rupert Grint seemed way too chubby and later on way too stocky for the way Ron was described in the books. The original Ron from the books was more conventially attractive than his movie counterpart in my opinion, with his long nose, lankiness, bright blue eyes, and freckles.. Ron in the books also had an awkward dorkishness in him which I feel that the movie portrayal failed to demonstrate. Movie!Ron portrayed by Rupert Grint simply gave off the vibe of a care-what-may tough jock whose nicest emotion was obliviousness, a standard much lower than book!Ron..
Load More Replies...Well, he's described as having a long nose in the books. Kids often have wonky features before they grow into them.
Load More Replies...Very un-life like freckles from my perspective. I have a face full and I should know, that’s not what they look like
I think this is pretty accurate. I can't picture him like this at all because of the movies, but from the books' descriptions Ron and the twins are kinda the other way around than how they are pictured in the movies. Ron is supposed to be the lanky one, while the twins are shorter/bulkier. And if my memory serves me right, Ron is said to have a large nose too?
Bellatrix Lestrange
This one really reminds me of an actor or actress. I can't really name it? It's like a mixture of famous people I know but I can't tell them apart. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP.
I mean I think they did a fair job in the movie however I think they could have found someone that looked more like her
I'm on the fence. Helena Bonham Carter is whom typically pops into my mind when I read the books, but again I do what I can to re-imagine the characters from their actor counterparts. I gotta say though, I like how this depiction turned out.
Vernon Dursley
Unlike his son, this guy does not work for me at all. He looks INTELLIGENT - the last thing Vernon should look. That is a knowing grin. And Vernon should not look like he has a sense of humour.
He wasn't called Vernon in every translation. His name was changed to Wiktor in Norwegian and Herman in Dutch! My guess is the artist read the Brazilian Portuguese version of the books, where Vernon was called...yup, Valter.
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if something like that had happened. I'd never have guessed Valter was a Portuguese name.
Load More Replies...That quote is the ONLY reason I remember mail doesn't come on Sundays to this day, I'm not gonna lie. I'm 23 and pre-med... It's a bit embarrassing, but at least I remember!
Load More Replies...Petunia and Dudley were the ones with blonde hair, I think..
Load More Replies...Cedric Diggory
I prefer Robert Pattinson, this guy looks like an improved version of me!
Eyebrows too low. Cedric is a cheerful character, his eyes should not be shaded in this vaguely menacing manner.
Dudley Dursley
This is stage cells go through is called the Dudley Dursely stage where the cells eat too much and become spoiled brats
Load More Replies...Petunia Dursley
I forgot that Petunia was blonde. Odd that they wouldn't just make her wear a wig for her scenes.
They swapped them. Dudley was supposed to be blonde too.
Load More Replies...Yes this is how they described her as in the books , horselike face , a long faca and neck ,and yes , blonde , but still , I didn't imagine her to look like this after reading the book , idk why , she doesn't look like Lily Evan's sister , and she doesn't even look like Petunia..
I actually was wondering about how much they don't look like sisters! Maybe Lily was adopted and that's why only one of them had powers!
Load More Replies...Not the way I see her, but definitely fake and unpleasant enough.
Dolores Umbridge
I feel she was casted fair enough. You want her to look human enough (which this fails at) to be almost polite at first. Until she takes over as dictator.
Wasn’t she described as looking like a toad in the book though?
Load More Replies...Before the movies. The Delores I had in my head was Roslyn from Monsters Inc. "always watching"
Owkengjojdnsbjckfnj I JUST SCROLLED DOWN AND LITERALLY SCREAMED!!! PUT THIS FACE IN A HORROR MOVIE!
she was supposed to look like a toad., I thought this looks like a psychotic leprechaun.
Peter Pettigrew
Honestly all of these gave me Dishonored vibes, I'm glad it's not just me
Load More Replies...Not rat-like enough. At least in the movies, he looked like a rat.
Absolutely right. Dangerous through weakness. He looks like a coward and someone who is hiding something.
Merope Riddle (Voldemort's Mother)
Why did the AI make wall-eyed? Was that described in the book? Book 6 isn't my fave so I've not read it enough to remember.((people have already pointed out the description that I wasn't recalling. Kinda don't need multiple comments restating the same thing))
That's how she was described in the books. Actually much uglier.
Load More Replies...Too pretty. This girl only needs a touch of make-up to turn heads. Merope was ugly. I don't say that in contempt: she is a character I feel for. But just because of that, we can't pretend that she did not carry the burden of her degenerate and probably incestuous ancestors.
So how did Tom turn out to be that f*****g beautiful...?
Load More Replies...Yes , okay , the eyes are alright , but she looks pretty , Merope was constantly abused and you can't imagine a person who was beaten everyday to look this pretty..
I pictured her much more thin and haunted looking. This girl looks like warrior ready to take on anything life throws at her. Merope suffered severe emotional abuse her entire life.
It's actually an interesting Twist for Voldemort if we're looking at his mom as a warrior.
Load More Replies...Why are people trying to get Annie removed from Bored Panda for her comment? PLEASE, PEOPLE: Remember: piling on down votes is CENSORSHIP on BP. 10 downvotes, and an account gets SUSPENDED. Three suspensions, and it's the death penalty.
Load More Replies...Bill Weasley
Longer hair. Earring with a fang. More cool, less dorky. Probably got confused with Percy.
Pretty sure his hair is up in a ponytail, so it is long, just put up.
Load More Replies...Yeah, the artbreeder AI seems to have problems with freckles. Most of the time the result either looks like dirt or acne
Load More Replies...All of the Weasleys had red hair.... in the books, too.
Load More Replies...Bill from the movies is preferable, he's described as handsome, which I thought he was. Not this.
Minerva Mcgonagall
No, sorry, but even before seeing Maggie Smith in that role she was the spitting image for my personal McGonagall.
Maggie Smith could play anybody any time ever, and totally rock it.
Load More Replies...i agree with ya on that one Professor Mcgonagall her persona fits the original character Maggie Smith
Load More Replies...Maggie Smith was so good in this role though, she's such an amazing actress. In my opinion, she's much better than whatever this is.
Looks kinda like an adult Wednesday Addams, but that's probably mostly the hair.
Pansy Parkinson
Forgive me, but she reminds me of an angry pig for reasons I cannot explain.
You mean pug? Because she was described with a face like a pug in the books.
Load More Replies...YES!! "Pug-nosed" Pansy, as she is constantly described. No way she is the fairy-like character some artists insist on.
She was described as looking like a Pug, but she looks more like a bulldog here...
Umm these face expressions are kinda hilarious and making me want to scream at the same time
More like a mug shot of Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci s love child
Gilderoy Lockhart
To young, hair should be longer. I know I keep replying the same thing but God! These are terrible!!!
Nope, he is 28 in the book. Kenneth Branagh was just way too old to play him.
Load More Replies...If you don't know who Firenze is, he's the centaur who takes Trelawney's job after Umbridge fires her.
Load More Replies...Viktor Krum
Seriously where are everyones cheeks?! No one is fed in the books apparently. Chiseled jawlines and sunken cheeks.
Everyone in these pictures are either too skinny or ridiculously fat!
Idk why he feels like he was in Azkaban for staring too much at someone..
not even close, he's supposed to look *handsome* not like a f****n goblin
He doesn't look unattractive...he just looks like lifes beat him down hard. He's seen some things, man, dark dark things
Read my mind! I was thinking that the Hogwarts cafeteria must be short staffed.
Load More Replies...So no Dumbledore, Molly, Arthur, or Percy, but we get Voldemort’s mom??
So we put Voldemort mom but not, the man with the half moon spectacles
Nice try, but I don't buy it. Not all sisters look alike, but Lily and Petunia have nothing in common. And Harry is supposed to have his mothers eyes.
All of the faces seem to have been "crafted" from 3 molds. Standard male, standard female and wide.
Load More Replies...Most of them look too young, and they mostly seem built on the same two or three basic face shapes.
I really wish these were not described as being created by A.I, because artificial intelligence is not what created these. They're not much more than an identikit from a selection of features, and put together by a simple algorithm. That's why most of them look very similar.
I thought the movie casting was very well done. And don't nobody do crazy like Helena Bonham Carter!
Everyone's eyes are either too big or have an unnatural colour. Or both.
Read my mind! I was thinking that the Hogwarts cafeteria must be short staffed.
