Being a Hollywood actor or actress often means folding impressive amounts of money, but when male stars are constantly cashing in more, it can really disrupt the workflow and alert their female colleagues. The film industry is just another field in which women fall under the gender pay gap, and a few actresses have stood up in the past pointing out the injustice when it comes to receiving equal pay. Actresses and their supporters have become so outraged that many of them have decided to fight back and make a point. Displeased with the fact that women are working as hard as men for significantly lesser pay while having even more responsibilities on their plate outside of usual workspaces, ladies are slowly but surely starting to raise their voices and try to get heard.
The stories below illustrate how sometimes, it’s just a man’s world, and that the recent International Women’s Day could be more of manifestation rather than a celebration as it is most likely to still be a tough journey to equality and fairness. Let us know your thoughts and hopes in the comments.

Gillian Anderson Got Offered Only Half Of David Duchovny’s Pay For The New X-Files
It already took Gillian Anderson three seasons to bump up her salary to what David Duchovny was getting paid for the original X-Files. Due to that, she initially ended up denying the first offer of the new X-Files. At the moment, she is getting the same as her male co-star, but then again, it was only thanks to persistent negotiations.
Good for her that she fought for it!! She knew that there wouldn't be any sequel without her!!
She shouldn't have had to fight for it though because, as you say, they couldn't do it without her.
Load More Replies...I always found Mulder rather annoying. Without Gillian's Scully I'd never have bothered watching the show at all.
It took her 3 seasons to become a co-star though. People watched it because of him initially.
I was going to say that the make actor could be more desirable so higher priced or that the actress should then refuse if she's not happy. But in this case, it's a clear example of pay gap. It's not x-files without Scully! So they can't pretend it's about desirability.
What an exhausting concept! Having to fight for the benefits others enjoy with no effort. Women, POC, children, elderly, middle class, blue collar workers..... an endless list of those fighting for equality others take for granted. Yet we deny them. Shame
Jesus... WHY?? Maybe that piece of meat between the legs involve that difference???
Angelina Jolie Made Half What Brad Pitt Did For Mr. And Mrs. Smith
As the much-talked-about Hollywood couple were acquainted in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it also drew attention to the pay inequality. Pitt, playing the husband of Jolie in the film, made $20 million, whereas Jolie walked away with half of that.
That's pretty ridiculous. They were both A listers and carried equal weight in the movie. Unlike some of the others this is a clear injustice
"Starring alongside the legendary Brad Pitt, Jolie and her co-star were both paid $20 million for their participation in the movie, a hefty sum reserved for the elite of the elite in Hollywood talent." https://celebanswers.com/how-much-does-angelina-jolie-make-per-movie/
Load More Replies...A quick Google check says Jolie and Pitt both earned the same amount according to an interview in Rolling Stone Magazine. This is one of the internet rumours of sexism that's not true.
Yeah we should get more, we gave birth too all these people.
Load More Replies...This makes absolutely no sense. Angelina was already a huge star by then. She had won an Oscar by then and she was still paid half? No, it's not about whose more famous. It's about having faith in your actors. Angelina had starred in tomb raider and completely carried the film as the lead. The misogynistic comments denouncing her on being paid less because she got together with Brad are disgusting. People never miss an opportunity to shame women for their personal lives but somehow always excuse men for the same.
Forbes magazine says,in 2020. this is what women actors hauled in. Sofia Vergara: $43 million, Angelina Jolie $35.5 million, Gal Gadot: $31.5 million, Melissa McCarthy: $25 million, Meryl Streep: $24 million, Emily Blunt: $22.5 million, Nicole Kidman: $22 million, Ellen Pompeo: $19 million, Elisabeth Moss: $16 million, Viola Davis: $15.5 million.
missed the point. https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2017/03/24/female-actors-paid-less_n_15567124.html

At some point, being the highest-paid television actress, Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Grey tried to request to get slightly more than Patrick Dempsey and got the cold shoulder. Although she was the star of the show, when it came to salary, it turned out completely different.
No, it's not. It's named after a famous medical book. Gray's Anatomy is an English written textbook of human anatomy originally written by Henry Gray and illustrated by Henry Vandyke Carter. The graphics in the opening sequence of the show either come from the book or are based on the illustrations in the book. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray%27s_Anatomy
Load More Replies...This is probably the worst one, she was the main character, she deserved much more than Patrick earned, and didn't get the salary because she's a women.
I met someone who worked on the set. Apparently he was a big ol' duche. Her praises weren't that high either.
They guy is a douche and so was his stupid character. Rumours say one of his conditions was to be paid more than the rest of the cast, and considering he was a 'b-list from the 80s has been" when the show started, he should've been thankful.
Charlize Theron Made $10 Million Less Than Chris Hemsworth In The Huntsman
Another female actress got her eyes opened through the Sony hack scandal. Turned out that Charlize Theron was making $10 million less than her male counterpart, Chris Hemsworth, in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. This made her demand for a pay raise for the prequel Snow White and The Huntsman.
Charlize Theron is thousand times a better thespian than this Chris guy !
I'm gonna probably get downvoted for this but I absolutely LOVE Chris Hemsworth -
Load More Replies...How is that possible, I like Chris but Charlize is a A list goddess.
From all the reports, it sounds like Chris was paid $10M and Charlize was paid less than this (but how much less has not been disclosed). She did get the same wage in the end, thankfully. https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2015/01/80444/charlize-theron-equal-pay
Natalie Portman Got Paid Three Times Less Than Ashton Kutcher
Natalie Portman, who starred along Ashton Kutcher in No Strings Attached, revealed that he was paid three times more for the movie. Like Jennifer Lawrence after the controversy over the gender pay inequality in American Hustle, she regretted not speaking out enough.
What kind of maths is that though? Do they mean she was paid a third of what he was?
Load More Replies...Thats shitty considering that she was the more bankable star at the time too...
Ashton Kutcher can’t even act while Natalie Portman has been at it since she was a child and excels in nearly everything she does.
I don't think they negotiate the deals themselves. Sounds like the woman had s**t managers.
jewish Portman riped off by jewish Hollywood. And all want to watch Natalie 3 TIMES MORE than Kutcher.
It makes sense! Other one is an Oscar winner and other one Ashton Kusher. Wait a minute...
Jennifer Lawrence And Amy Adams Received 7% Of The Profits From American Hustle When Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, And Jeremy Renner Got 9%
The famous Sony hack revealed that the pay among the male and female stars of American Hustle was not the fairest. After finding that out, Jennifer Lawrence, who was paid less than Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner, expressed her regret over not negotiating it more fiercely.
It's not about the negotiations. Studies on salary negotiations have shown that women ask for salary raises as often as men. They just get denied them more frequently. You don't individually negotiate away sexism. Public exposure like this one, however, can contribute to change.
Not saying that women shouldn't negotiate hard. However, saying she earns less because she didn't negotiate well is victim blaming at its best.
Load More Replies...This is not a big issue if you know math. Three Men got 9% and Two Women got 7%. So the two women got more... however, I think the issue was the male actors being Paid more original. A woman getting 3.5% to a man's 3% is beyond fair to her. So on this alone, there's not anti-female bias.
Meryl Streep Has Earned Less Than Male Actors Throughout Her Career
Even being one of the most legendary Hollywood actresses, Meryl Streep, famously stating that “Women’s issues are men’s issues,” spoke about sexism in the film industry and revealed that she has been underpaid throughout her career.
Nonspecific, but being such a big actress, I'm sure there are some better examples
She's worked with MANY A-list actors. And Kevin Kline was a NOBODY in Sophie's Choice
Load More Replies...Great actress that has been a major star for decades, am sure there have been movies where she was paid more than other actors be it male or female but am sure it was always deserved.
Although yes women and men should get equal pay, honestly she is one of the most annoying bugs the heck out of me actresses.
Michelle Williams Received Less Than 1% Compared To What Mark Wahlberg Did In All The Money In The World
Ironically, in the movie called All the Money in the World, Michelle Williams received less than 1% of what her co-star Mark Wahlberg pocketed. In response to a controversy that sparked a year later after the release of the film, Wahlberg donated his $1.5 million ‘over-payment’ to Time’s Up legal defence fund, all under Williams’s name. Williams, on her behalf, released a statement thanking all the men and women involved in speaking out about sexual harassment in Hollywood’s film industry.
This one is misleading...this huge pay gap was only for the reshoot when they reached Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer. Williams didn't want to get paid considering the circumstances so she only took a per diem that totaled around 1K (I assume this was the minimum required by the union) ....Walhberg, however, wanted to get paid for the reshoot to the tune of 1.5m
This. Facts can still be facts but out of context they can cause problems that don't exist.
Load More Replies...Some of these agents really have to step up for their clients. Their salaries rely on how well they do.
I would go to that movie because of Williams and despite Wahlberg

Amanda Seyfried Received 10% Less Than What Her Fellow Male Actor Got
Amanda Seyfried disclosed that even though she and a male co-star’s statuses were even, the pay wasn’t. In one of her interviews, she admitted finding out that her male co-star received as much as 10% more than what she did in one of their big-budget features. “It’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is,” Amanda shared.
A lot of actors don’t want to name drop and talk badly after the fact, so won’t go into specifics. They know the people responsible know who they are talking about. So wanting specifics is like wanting to her gossip and juicy details rather than acknowledging the truth of the matter as demonstrated by plenty of other already.
Load More Replies...Both of them making 10 times more than the average American does in a year for a film seems fair!!
Does the average American generate the revenue to pay that amount too? If the film is gonna generate several million dollars does it make sense to pay the people generating that money the same as the average American? Plus this is about gender equality and the pay gap. Now don’t get me started on race…

Something’s Gotta Give definitely gave Jack Nicholson a full fat paycheck rather than adequately rewarding his female co-star Diane Keaton. Allegedly, Nicholson shared the pay back with his co-star to make it even.
Like this movie, but she did seem too be in the movie more than him.
Robin Wright Had To Negotiate Her Pay In House Of Cards When Kevin Spacey Was One Of The Highest-Paid Actors On TV
Robin Wright, winner of a Golden Globe, had to negotiate the salary for her House of Cards role of Claire Underwood. Kevin Spacey, playing the husband in this popular Netflix series, was raking in $500,000 per episode. Wright stated that she would discuss the injustice publicly unless her conditions changed. And they did.
He tried the reach around on my son's friend in a movie near Duluth. The friend didn't receive it well.
i don't see the problem. Kevin spacey negotiated his pay. Robin also negotiated her pay.
The problem is that he asked for something and he got it just like that!! She had to threaten she will go public in order to get what she wanted! You still don't see a problem?

Hilary Swank pointed out that no matter how much Hollywood loves its women, it still loves men more when it comes to paying for the job. Sienna Miller Would Have Gotten Half Of What Another Actor Was Going To Make
Sienna Miller walked away from a two-person play and made a point as the male co-actor was offered twice as much as her. “We are going to have to make sacrifices to make change. I want to turn up and feel dignified.”
I don’t even notice awkward smiles. I notice forced, uncomfortable smiles.

“I’ve been in films where I’ve found out my male co-star got paid double what I got paid, and it’s just a reality of the time that we live in,” admitted Rooney Mara. The actress expressed her disappointment in the gender pay gap as she has been underpaid a few times. The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo actress also stated that she is grateful for getting paid for what she does, but finding out about her male co-stars receiving larger sums is still frustrating.
Her co-star in TGWTDT was Daniel Craig. When she has the experience and acting chops of Daniel Craig, then she can complain about getting paid less than him.
This is a very fair statement. She's grateful for the money she gets, but how is it fair that she gets so much less than her male counterparts? Actors are not the best example of this, I have a lot more sympathy for people doing the jobs no one else wants - cleaning, picking produce, looking after the children of people who earn much more etc. The list goes on and on.
Amy Adams Got Much Less Compared To Male Actors In American Hustle
Although Amy Adams realized she was making much less than Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner in American Hustle, she still decided to stick with the role. She explained that not all negotiations are done by the actresses and actors themselves, but often by their agents. According to her, it came down to the decision of whether it was worth it to take on the role or not.
This one I agree with, they were all main characters and they all deserved the same pay check. Not a minor character claiming to have made less than the main character.
I wonder if they're going by dollars per screen time?

Jessica Chastain Only Made A Quarter Of What Her Reported Salary For The Martian Was
Jessica Chastain earned $1.75 million for The Martian when her co-star Matt Damon reportedly made anything from $15 to $25 million. “I made less than a quarter of that in reality, so there is a huge wage gap in the industry," Chastain said.
Okay, Matt Damon was the main character. That is a huge pay gap, but I don't even remember who she played.
She was the captain but he had about 3x more to do acting wise so I'm not too sure how bad this is
Load More Replies...This one shouldn't be in here. We're trying to take this seriously, we can't have side characters asking for as much pay as main characters who have way more screen time, no matter the gender.
Like others, I kinda have to agree with this one. Screen time and role importance should be the big factors
Can you imagine the movie when their roles are swaped? Would it make that big money it made? The job is not to memorize text and spend time acting, the job is to attract people...or more precisely to bring in money. The whole prerequisite for these analysis is wrong. Their job is not really same.
Yes this is a problem, but some of the examples equate a lesser known actress with a A list actor. Others were a clear inequity like Mr & Mrs Smith.
Wage gap for women in that industry is a serious issue but many of these don't seem like the best examples to showcase that. Was Downey overpaid in the Iron Man films? Probably. But he's the main character so comparing his salary to Paltrow's, whose role is much smaller, is apples and oranges. I think a better example would be something like Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis being paid much less then Vincent Cassel in Black Swan.
Some of these are understandably outrageous, but some of them make sense. Like the Martian, Matt Damon should have made the most because he had the biggest role, and Iron Man...come on, yeah he should make more. Think part of the problem is also not having big epic roles for women. The other part is the very real fact that female labor has always been devalued.
the crown. the queen was getting paid significantly less than prince phillip (actors I mean)
Even as a woman, I don't care, you're still getting paid ridiculous amounts. I am not going to feel sorry for you. Don't like it? Don't work again and still be a millionaire... waaa.
In The Avengers, Diana Rigg was not only paid less than co-star Patrick Macnee, even the cameraman was paid better than her.
At the exception of a few examples, I don't think Hollywood, or any place where popularity is a factor, is a good example of pay gap. A specific male actor can be in higher demand than a specific female actor. If I'm asked to be the next iron Man for example, I'm pretty sure if guess less than Scarlett yohanson because I'm not in demand at all so I have no leverage for negotiation. I agree it's probably a factor but gender disparity is better down in other places, like an office where you can compete two exactly similar jobs, leaving out the popularity factor.
I like how the comments of the people who disagree with the premise of unfairness are hidden, because we should all think one way only about things and not be exposed to dissenting opinions!
