‘Before And After’: 20 Devastating Images From Ukraine That Show How Quickly The War Destroys Everything
It's been a week since Russia invaded Ukraine. The first stage of war didn't go to the aggressor's plan—the Kremlin's forces were in complete disarray and made little progress.
However, even though the Ukrainians are heroically defending their homeland, Russia has ramped up its assaults and continues to advance before the second round of talks between the two countries is set to take place on Thursday.
As more cities are shelled and Putin piles unimaginable suffering on civilians, as details of war crimes emerge, and as allies try to find the best ways to respond, photos from the battles paint a devastating picture of how the conflict is transforming this once-peaceful corner of the world.

Putin, you worthless sack of s**t!! These are NOT military targets. You're mother was a devout Christian, and this how you behave ? Wouldn't surprise anyone if she's deeply ashamed of you right now. Utter SCUM.
By attacking Ukraine putin destroys 3 countries: Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. none of the people in their right mind support this, not in Belarus nor in Russia. Of course there are some brainwashed idiots out there( very small percentage) , but trust me brainwashing ( about fighting Ukrainian nazi) going on in those countries ( Russia and somewhat Belarus) for over 2 decades.
These photos are abhorrent. Like every civilised person, I weep for Ukraine. Perhaps the Europeans can put an end to this madness with their universal healthcare and free public education.
Would be better to have two pictures of the same part of the building? It's the same style, but nothing in the left picture has the same windows and proportions as on the right. It may be to the left of the left photo.
DOES IT F*****G MATTER? Ukraine is being bombed!!! People are dying!!! And you have to be this nit picky as most of us sit here crying for the anguish these people feel!
Load More Replies...Oh. My. God. Someone needs to jam a missile right up Putin's yingyang!
All the money seized from oligarchs in banks and from the sale of their seized assets should be sent directly to Ukraine.
I hope they broadcast the trial from The Hague that Putin is going to get
President Joe Biden alleged that Russia is intentionally targeting Ukrainian civilians.
But despite his accusations for the regime, Biden stopped short of formally claiming Moscow is committing war crimes.
His envoy to the United Nations, however, said Rssia is prueparing to use banned weapons, including "cluster munitions and vacuum bombs," in Ukraine.
She also issued a stark warning to invading Russian soldiers."Your leaders are lying to you. Do not commit war crimes," US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said during remarks to an emergency session of the General Assembly. "Do everything you can to put down your weapons and leave Ukraine."
There is a special place in hell for Putin but I doubt satan wants him there.
He’ll put Putin right next to Hitler at the very bottom in a special little hole for them
Load More Replies...It breaks my heart just looking at these pictures. I can't imagine the anger and heartbreak of those who live there. It's a horrible thing to have a hurricane or a tornado do damage like this... but human beings doing it? On purpose??? Unacceptable. Totally unacceptable.
Is that a military target? Because it looks a lot like housing to me. Go UKRAINE!
it’s smart to disguise military posts in civilian apartments, too strong these Ukrainians 😖 ... poor people, theirs homes...
Russia's relentless bombardment of residential areas across Ukraine has already forced more than a million refugees to flee the country.
"I have worked in refugee emergencies for almost 40 years, and rarely have I seen an exodus as rapid as this one," Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said in a statement.
For comparison, it took three months for one million refugees to leave Syria in 2013.
A SCHOOL! Putin did this to a school. Animal! Edit: wait a minute, that last photo is photoshopped. No it isn’t. Thanks people.
He wasn't ashamed by attacking hospital in Syria, why should he care now? (Not like Russia ever cared about the Geneva Convention anyways)
Load More Replies...It's the same school from before. This is a place FOR KIDS! Where kids PLAY! What the hey do you need to bomb it for?! I'm calling war crimes here. Wikipedia states it as, "A war crime is a violation of the laws of war that gives rise to individual criminal responsibility for actions by the combatants, such as intentionally killing civilians or intentionally killing prisoners of war, torture, taking hostages, unnecessarily destroying civilian property, deception by perfidy..." I can check off two of them right now. Putin's going to jail for a long time.
It's the same school as in (what is at the moment) the first item of this list. Well, the left picture there and the first picture here... It's confusing because the before/after are from other viewpoints, it's not clear/convincing that it's the same building (unless you live there!). Like this one even looking "hang on, is that photoshopped because 2nd and 3rd pic seem same look but one has a school in the background" --- because the playground is symmetric and photo opposite direction.
If you hide your soldiers in a school... that's what happens. escuela-62...d5c87b.jpg
All photos may look odd but I think they were just taking from a different angle.
Putin, you suck! Stop! Just stop! How much blood do you want on your hands? Is this really what you want to be remembered for? You are an evil, self-righteous, soulless, and heartless bastard!
Yes, He does. To show what a powerful manly man does.
Load More Replies...This is just terrible! But wait a minute; hasn't this happened in other wars? Just asking.
Someone needs to just sneak up on putin in his little hidey hole and take him out. Put an end to all of this tragedy in one move.
People losing their lives not only in Ucraine... but Afganistan... Mexico...Africa but somehow nobody seems to care about them..
Load More Replies...It's pretty hard to say "we're not targeting civilians" with this kind of evidence to the contrary.
Millions more people are likely to be forced to flee Ukraine, Grandi added. "International solidarity has been heartwarming. But nothing -- nothing -- can replace the need for the guns to be silenced; for dialogue and diplomacy to succeed. Peace is the only way to halt this tragedy."
In Ukraine's capital Kyiv, residents were awoken in the early hours of Thursday by at least one large explosion in the southwest of the city, following a day of heavy shelling.
To the south, the mayor of the strategically important city of Kherson on the Black Sea indicated that Russian forces had seized control, though claims remain disputed.
And in the port city of Mariupol, home to roughly 400,000, residents are without electricity and water, as Russian troops step up their offensive.
Everyone knows that treadmills and ellipticals are very subversive... a huge danger to the state.
I 'spose that's a military base as well. Such evil could be conducted in this gym! People could get FIT! We simply must bomb it if we want to live!
It's not taken from the same angle, but it's not as if they planned ahead to stage before and after photos. They just found pictures of Ukraine from earlier and those from recently and stuck them side by side, right? Or not? I don't know.
Load More Replies...That's like 20 stories up. Was it just target practice day on people's homes??
The 122mm rockets that did much of this damage are unguided munitions.
Load More Replies...This looks similar to the apt building hit by a missed that was aimed at the hospital. Had this building not been standing that high, the functioning hospital would have been done for. Brutal
There's no reason that building should still be standing. That is a miracle on its own.
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine. This is so sad 😞.
how about the people of Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, and Yemen ... thanked to Nato and US?
Load More Replies...Yes these look like the same buildings, but How Many years between photo's? Look at the differences.
all the signs are different; i think the picture was just taken a while ago and they changed out the signs since then
Load More Replies...Vasylkiv Professional College, Kyiv Region
That does not look like the same building though. However, my comment is irrelevant at this point. :-(
It's not the same building. Horrible nevertheless.
Load More Replies...It is a sizable university, it may not be the same building but that doesn't eliminate it from being the same campus.
It makes you wonder what happened to those gorgeous Ukrainian Orthodox golden-domed churches look like now (you know--the ones that later inspired the Russian Orthodox churches?)
Ukrainian resistance in Kharkiv, the country's second-biggest city, continues to hold out, as Russian strikes hit at least three schools and damaged a cathedral and shops on Wednesday, according to videos and photos posted to social media, geolocated and verified by CNN.
One the same day, President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Russian forces in a broadcast, saying: "You are leaving people without food, you are leaving us without medication. You are shelling evacuation routes, there's no weapon you wouldn't use against us, against free citizens of Ukraine."
It is hard to take these photos one at a time... I'm trying to imagine what it's like to live in a place where this is the new normal.
Put him in a hole with his head showing. Run him over with various and sundry military/construction vehicles. I want him to see death coming for him.
Load More Replies...One big missile into Putins gov office while he and his goons are in there should do it :(
This makes me so sad to see. Ukraine was so pretty before, I don't understand why Pytin seems bent on turning it into a smoldering mess. 😞
He is genuinely evil. He has nothing but a cold empty void in his heart.
Load More Replies...A Russian billionaire put a price on his head... I hope will all my soul that it works. https://www.bizpacreview.com/2022/03/03/russian-businessman-places-1-million-bounty-on-putins-head-dead-or-alive-1207888/
Nope, but it had no problem vaporizing the family and man that happened to be near by. This war is a brutal and disgusting crime against the people of Ukraine.
Load More Replies...According to Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in addition to those who had left the country, one million people were also displaced internally.
"Thousands of people, including older people, pregnant women, as well as children and people with disabilities, are being forced to gather in underground shelters and subway stations to escape explosions," Bachelet said. "Many people in situations of vulnerability are separated from families and effectively trapped."
The before pictures are so beautiful…but the after pictures proves that Putin should take those crummy ideas and shove them up his a**
He is accusing the Ukrainians of bringing back Nazism. Which is not true.
Load More Replies...When this is all over, I hope Russia has to pay to rebuild this... not the innocent people, but straight out of putin's personal alleged 70- 200 billion treasury.
Putin is one Evil man. How can he NOT be worried for his very soul??
The Russians are behaving like the Germans did in ww2 and Putin is a war criminal just as Hitler was. This has to stop to bring back peace. Putin killing people just for extra land, oil and wheat.
Was this photo taken before or after? oh, yes, it was before!!! but she is just a Gypsy, who cares? gypsy-6247...d97e08.jpg
Don't down vote me for this, because I am fully aware of the size and scope of the tragedy, but as I learned after Hurricane Charley, your town will never be the same until the trees regrow. I look at these beautiful buildings, and lovely green spaces, and think "it will be decades before it looks that nice again."
I'm with you GoddessOdd. I thought the same thing. Everything looked so fresh and beautiful before that asshat Putin.
Load More Replies...With the scale of the humanitarian disaster becoming ever more apparent, the International Criminal Court announced Wednesday it had opened an immediate active investigation into possible war crimes committed by Russian forces during the invasion of Ukraine.
ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan said his office "had already found a reasonable basis to believe crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court had been committed and had identified potential cases that would be admissible."
Let's hope that people responsible for these atrocities will be brought to justice.
This is all just so wrong. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people :(
So you're going to attack the people of Ukraine unprovoked then bomb their airports to make it that much harder for them to get out? Pig.
This is a very sad event. I do not understand why they flew with her back to Ukraine minutes before the war. She could have parked for free at any airport - I’m sure of that.
Load More Replies...Can I please beg news outlets to stop calling this brutal, unprovoked, INVASION of a peaceful county a "conflict"? For God's sake!! This is no "conflict", it is madness. It is WAR.
Since when is Bombing School, Hospitals and Public and Community centers WAR??? To me THAT is just Cowardice.
I hope that every bit of Puyin's estimate 600 billion dollars that have been frozen in accounts around the world will be turned over to the Ukrainian as reparations so they can rebuild. I hope many other things regarding Ukraine's plight, too, but I just want to point out a possible source for rebuilding.
That lying POS said they would only attack military properties, which was bad enough, in their "military operations". If it's military operations, do it your own country, a*****e
We need these images! To see what Putin is responsible for. What damages he is inflicting. This puts the word "war" into perspective. I wish this would not be happening, but it is and it is important to know how bad it is. Knowledge is power. We need to know so we can help. I hope we can help. I hope this will be resolved soon. Take down Putin in way that it will not only be liberating Ukraine, but also Russia!
Perhaps we could copy these pics and post them in the reviews section of Russian businesses on Google Maps, as suggested in another post? So Russian folks can see what Putin does not want them to see?
Load More Replies...Big props to the Russian troops that turned themselves in. I can't imagine the courage that took especially when you see all your fellow soldiers just following orders but you feel that knot in your gut... I hope for more of those. Putin has no power if his "tools"reject him
trouble is if russia gets full control they might be shot or gulag if lucky. unless putin gets caught and tried
Load More Replies...My biggest fear in all this is the possibility of Putin realising there is no chance of winning this war, whether he manages to occupy Ukraine or not, it will not be a victory for him. And then he will be a man with nothing left to loose and the means to take the whole world down with him.
This is horrible. I can't imagine how Ukrainians feel looking at this. Living thru this. Seeing their home get demolished by a fucken asshat n his asshat minions. Unbelievable. I'm so sorry to everyone who has been affected by this and forced from your homes and who have lost people they love. This is just heartbreaking
Last Wednesday, the people of Ukraine woke up like any other day. They took showers. At meals with their families. Went to work. Drove their children to school. Walked their dogs. Went shopping. When they went to bed that night, they expected Thursday to be just like any other day. Putin took all of that away from them. Come hell or high water, that evil bastard will pay for his crimes.
Given that Chinese state TV is just copying Russian state TV and reporting that Ukranians have sent hundreds of missiles onto Ukranian cities themselves, that it's all to defend Russian speaking minorities that are being bombarded... Even tv in Taiwan can (where they're traditionally anti-CCTV)? None of this matters to the Russian that just gets state news. You post these images on a review of a russian business (with neat russian text -- not english nor google-translated text)? They'll sigh and say "poor foreign fools, showing picture of well-known Ukranian attack and blame russia?!".
putin--bad. ukraine--good. big supporter. but on a different note... who is making some of these "before" and "after" compilation shots? too many of them are not actually of the same exact thing/structure/location. that's not how before/after shots work. like that gym, for example. i've seen that after shot publicized many times. it's good to get that out there so that the world can see how putin is destroying the everyday lives of the ukrainian people. but... if you can't find the actual "before" image of the same gym and the same exact shot--not just some random pic of a different undestroyed gym--then don't put them together. that undermines the credibility of the shots. "here's a wide shot picture of a stadium. let's put it next to a destroyed building that was never in the wide shot." that doesn't help things.
Unfortunately, this won't end with anything short of Putin being assassinated. No matter how badly you cripple his country in retaliation, the economy, the people, all of it, no matter how many countries are against him and how many rich friends turn on him, he won't withdraw. Withdrawing your troops is seen as a weak move and the one thing he's never wanted to be seen as is weak. To him being seen as weak would be his downfall. Though he's definitely already done this. His downfall has begun because his "friends" will prefer his death over losing all they've gained. He has the absolute nerve to claim he's doing this to save people from a Nazi regime when he's bombing civilian populations and arresting thousands of his own people for daring to speak against him.
