During the 1930s, the American Humane Association organized a "Be Kind To Animals" week where they shared posters of people taking care of animals. These adorable posters used artist's Morgan Dennis' work who was already known for his drawings, particularly of dogs. Each poster had an illustration of a charming child shown taking care of an animal. The main goal of the posters was to spread the message that people should love and respect animals.
Scroll down to see some of these adorable posters yourself and don't forget to tell us what you think in the comments!

This may be how I acquired my pregnant stray Ragamuffin all those years ago.
Leaving pets behind is indefensible. Your pet's "natural hunter instinct" does NOT kick in. Guess what they do? Hang out by your house slowly starving to death or if you dump them end up getting run over trying to find their way home. Take them to a shelter.
In south Florida, there is an area called the Redlands where breeders dump less than perfect dogs and other irresponsible people dump dogs thinking they will survive with a pack. There are hundreds of dogs down there now. These dogs have been shot, maimed, poisoned, starved to death, one was fed nails. It is outrageous. The people who dump these dogs need to witness the consequence of their actions. https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Dogs-Dumped-Desperate-and-Left-for-Dead-414910253.html
We adopted a Redlands dumped dog. When I first saw him, his eyes were filled with sadness; it was heartbreaking. He is a happy boy now. Happy-Hank...227c5b.jpg
" Leaving pets behind is indefensible. " This is a pic of a kitty. For damn sure they don't lose that killer instinct. Perhaps you haven't met many cats . ;-P
Load More Replies...Yes, we adopted two beautiful cats left behind to die when our neighbor left!! So amazed at how cruel people can be!!
The people who move but leave the pets behind, had not loved them !!!
These are from a kinder, gentler time (ok, racism aside) when the country was more liberal, and in the heart of The New Deal. Now it's, "cut my taxes and screw everybody else" and where we kill horses by racing them for money, as in this report: https://sports.yahoo.com/santa-anita-racetrack-horse-racing-death-toll-safety-011416528.html
hope the scum bags who take joy in killing our beautiful creatures read this, but will it sink home
The only kind of shooting that should ever take place against animals--a camera.
I found one of these posters 25 years ago in an attic, had it framed and is one of my favorites
Oh my! This looks just like my pup, Barky McWoofwoof, except she's tri-colour. I adopted her ten years ago from the dog's home and she's amazing.
All animals means all animals. What about farmed animals? People only care for cats and dogs.
The modern breeds with a crushed in snout ought to be made illegal. It is cruel to breed animals with deformities. The cat in the picture has what was a normal snout - back then. When they could still breathe normally.

It doesn’t matter if that’s milk or water, the message it’s what’s important. Besides, still in the 1960s pregnant women used to drank and smoke! Times and understanding change.
Do you know that you comment the same thing twice just worded differently
Load More Replies..."Hurt no living thing" Animals are not things! Also, I wonder how many people that saw these posters still ate animals, the artist included?
Kinda negative, Joseph. For the 30s these were very progressive statements. It was a good start at getting humans to treat animals better. Nothing changes overnight no matter how much you think it should. I would also guess most U.S. citizens were not eating cats and dogs. But seriously, with these posters, wondering how much hypocrisy was present misses the entire point and is mute.
Load More Replies...The leash is there for a reason though, to prevent this from happening. A child that small shouldn't be responsible for a baby and a dog
Ah the good ol' days when you left your 7 year-old in charge of the baby. Or, you could afford a pram for a baby doll that cost more than 4 months rent for most people.
Oh God now I'm thinking of my own precious baby (meaning my puppy not an actual baby).
Its nothing to do with big it small dog...it has to do with a moments distraction can be devastating
Yeah, drive carefully but animals have this habit of jumping straight under the tires out of nowhere.
She looks busy with her little sibling, not paying attention.
Load More Replies...My parents used to have a horse that would reach over your shoulder, like this guy is doing, and steal either a hamburger or Pepsi out of your hand and take care of it himself!! Or maybe one parent's horse liked the burgers and the other loved Pepsi, I wasn't around those horses, they were gone by the time I came along.
why does that kid have a belt around his books?
awwwww! So cute! One moment I jus got a lil... waterfall in my eyeball...
Did you ever consider it could be before, or after school?
Load More Replies...Not domesticated horses, they wouldn't survive in the wild
Load More Replies...They couldn't make up their mind if the drawings were going to be toony or realistic.
Load More Replies...Different artist (Edwina, not Morgan Dennis), different eyes. Still cute, though.
When the subway says the only animals you can have must fit in your bag
I think they are trying to teach people to take their pets to the vet if they are sick or injured, instead of letting them suffer or die without any kind of attention because they are "just animals". Even today, many people refuse to take their dog or cat to the vet until it's too late.
Load More Replies...No, she is taking him to the animal hospital. Clues: Dog is wrapped in a blanket and held like a baby, and the poster on the wall behind her.
Load More Replies...thecat in the backround is looking at that tuft of fur on the dog like "what are you doing you are not purrfect!"
Animals are unable to tell us what they need, we must pay attention !!!

Load More Replies...That quote is from Alexander Pope's Epistles to Several Persons (1732): ‘'Tis education forms the common mind, Just as the twig is bent the tree's inclined.’
I think these prints should be produced in a Calendar or prints for a fund-raiser. Yep, I would buy one.
Back then people often let their dogs run while, then called them home at night. Had to be educated not to do so. Dog catchers are prevalent in Little Rascals of that time
If a family has little money, they must manage to rescue the pet from the pound !!!
All the posters were well done, now as I think, they should be done again, perhaps to have a poster contest, would love to see this in my city !!!
That would be a gold star. Blue star means 'a family member in the military. Gold star means 'service member dead'
Load More Replies...missing the word "some" in these posters (be kind to "some" animals) as the dogs and cats get fed milk and dead animal bodies of the hidden animals most people don't want to be kind to, the cows, goats, pigs, sheep, etc.... Glad we've come a bit farther in our thinking today.
The GREATEST FRIEND in this world.Never let you down, always comfort you, always want to play around with you, always want to lay next to you when you sleep, always want to walk with you in the world, always trust you completely if you treat this animal right, always wait for you no matter what, and on and on .... The most unselfish love in the universe. Just because they have four legs or feathers instead of two, does not mean they are any less than you or me. <3
Load More Replies...Good to know that there were people out there who cared about the wellbeing of animals back then. Touched my heart!
Its loable that they did this campaign in the 30s, with all the uncertanty and poverty. I wish that we would have more campaigns like this for the kids nowadays :)
I agree 100%. I support several animal-welfare organizations, but I have a soft spot for a smaller group called the Animal League of America that focuses on cats and dogs. I started sending them quarters when I was probably eight or nine years old and saw the "junk mail" on my parents' pile. That was 40 years ago, and the group has grown a lot! (And so have I, haha! Tip your waitress, folks, I'll be here all week!) Anyway, they have an elementary-school education program about kindness to and caring for animals. I wish there was a way to show them these wonderful pamphlets.
Load More Replies...they would certainly raise a lot of money that way!
Load More Replies...In Spain, after the civil war (after 1939) hunger made people eat a lot of animals we now love as our friends. Dogs, cats, pigeons... these posters wouldn't have made any difference. It was a question of survival. We are really lucky to live in our days! Hugs for everyone!
Yup. I'm vegetarian but if I was going to starve to death I'd eat whatever I could. In the meantime I prefer to be as kind to animals as I can be.
Load More Replies...Donate to the SPCA folks!! Here we have an organization that actually cares about helping animals, and then one that likes cow tatas and tries to start millions of personal vendettas with people every single f*ckimg day!
Animals, especially doggo (dont kill me cat peoples...) Are always at your side. They all deserve kindness, love, compassion, and a home. Whenever I see a stray in my neighbourhood, I pick it up and knock on doors until I find its home. #PawsForAPromise! #PawsForAPurpose!
