I believe that we are what we read and that the books we read tell more about us than the colour of our eyes or our haircut. This is why I started to sync the books I read with my Facebook profile picture by posting a picture with me having that book covering a part or all my face.

At the beginning nobody took my example. I changed six or seven bookface profile pictures in three weeks but nobody else wanted to do it. Things got a bit better when I started to transcript my favourite passages from the books and write them as comments in my profile picture.

The next thing I did was to go to Bookstory, a local bookstore from Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and propose to them to give 10% discount to everyone who has a bookface on their Facebook profile picture. They agreed and quickly bookface on facebook became a story in the local news websites.

After that I no longer was the only one with a book on my face on Facebook. In a couple of days there were hundreds of readers doing it as well.

We all know that people read less and less these days but I believe that it’s better to reward the people who read books rather than criticize those who don’t read.

I think it is a good idea to promote reading like this because people spend more and more time on social media and if you see a friend reading an interesting book you are more inclined to read it as well.
