Woman Shares All The Crimes She’s Committed Despite Having No Criminal Record To Illustrate White Privilege
Krista Vernoff is a TV screenwriter, showrunner, executive producer and director, best known for running the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. She’s also white. Which, according to Vernoff herself, has been her the most important mitigating circumstance every time she got herself into trouble.
So, to make a case for defunding the police, Vernoff tweeted all the times she escaped consequences due to her race. From drunk driving and stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods to beating people up, the woman shared it all and even inspired other people to do the same.

Vernoff said she was inspired to share the stories after learning about the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks, who was shot during a struggle with Atlanta police after he was found sleeping in his car in the drive-thru lane of a Wendy’s.
Vernoff talking about white privilege would probably strike a chord with Frances E. Kendall, Ph.D. , a consultant for organizational change specializing in issues of diversity and white privilege. Kendall thinks this subject is extremely difficult for white folks to discuss because many of them don’t feel powerful or as if they have privileges others do not. “It is sort of like asking fish to notice water or birds to discuss air,” Kendall wrote. “For those who have privileges based on race or gender or class or physical ability or sexual orientation or age, it just is – it’s normal.”
Kendall thinks white people can — and should — try to engage in conversations about their privilege more often. “While people of color understand the necessity of being able to read the white system, those of us who are white are able to live out our lives knowing very little of the experiences of people of color. Understanding racism or whiteness is often an intellectual exercise for us, something we can work at for a period of time and then move on, rather than its being central to our survival.”
So, our dear readers, let’s do just that; let’s discuss white privilege in the comments. We are eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the subject.

While I understand the point this woman is making, she also sounds like a not so good person. I've never had any interaction with cops except for traffic stops (and visiting someone in prison). I don't punch strangers or steal thousands or drive drunk or do drugs. Her stories turn my stomach because of her flagrant disregard for other people.
Ikr? It's almost like those are normal choices instead of really crappy ones. I've never done anything like that either. Punching people and drink driving? Ugh. Okay, so she's turned her life around and hopefully making MUCH better choices. A black person is highly unlikely to have had the same chances she has had. She's been very privileged.
Load More Replies...Female privilege, not white privilege. And apparent lack of parental guidance. She's almost bragging about it.
Or both? Pretty disgusting that she got away with so much. Particularly the drink driving - that can and does kill. I knew a little boy who was killed by a drunk driver so I have a very low tolerance of anyone getting away with that. I've never been stopped by the police for any reason but I don't need to be to see that there is a massive problem with the disparity in the treatment of black and white people. It needs to be dealt with. No-one running any police forces seem to be taking responsibility for that and they should be.
Load More Replies...A bit off-topic, but seeing what people say on various sites and articles on the matter, I have to say it. I think, rather than one group being privileged, it's more like the other group was denied basic human rights. It doesn't make the situation any better, but at least it shifts the focus onto empathy, instead of generating hateful over-analysis and competitions to who's more miserable. Language does matter, it really affects people's thoughts. (And I say this as someone legally qualified in linguistics, not as some random "angry Karen")
You make a good point. I find it very insightful. Unfortunately, privilege does figure in a lot, not just police, but in education, pay , healthcare, the legal system as a whole, etc. and while it's common across the board that those in lower economic groups to face these disparities, when you add in color, ethnicity, gender, etc. it's even more obvious and widespread
Load More Replies...I'm a white woman and I've been arrested and charged for shoplifting and drunk driving. I was assaulted by a cop in the elevator at the police station by a cop that wasn't my arresting officer. My arresting officer was there and did nothing. Every time I've gotten pulled over I've gotten a ticket. I'm not saying that privilege doesn't exist, but that it isn't consistent.
Sure! I went to jail and have a lot of tickets. But the ones where I SHOULD have been to jail, or gotten a ticket I did not. And it was because of my skin color in SC. Florida too.
Load More Replies...I never had problems with police, but also my biggest crime is probablly bad crossing. But I know few people from USA who had been hold on gun-point for things like "not having driving licence and registration in sunshield above head, but in glovebox (that white-middle age university teacher just turned to right and when he turned back, he was looking in gun).
Ask and wait for permission to get credentials. When you just start reaching the officer is going to assume the worst no matter what color you are.
Load More Replies...She is asking white people to think about the crimes they've committed? How about none. I never did any of those stuff she did. And instead of wanting everybody to get away with what she is getting away with, she should not get away with it either!! Drunk driving should have consequences regardless of your skin colour. So not just a warning or being shot to death, but a decent punishment for everybody who breaks the rules.
I was attacked by a group of about 30 kids from my school when I was a teen. Only one of the group was black. Reported it to school and police. Guess how many students were punished by the school? Guess who the police chose to talk to in person? That's right. One: the black girl. Everyone else got away with it, and it wasn't an isolated incident. White privilege is real.
I don't doubt the point you're trying to make, I've seen it happen a lot. The part of your story I do doubt is that you were attacked by 30 people and not only survived, but didn't suffer any traumatic brain damage. 30 on one isn't just a lot, it's deadly.
Load More Replies...This is not just a problem in the US, unfortunately. When I lived in Netherlands, where you are required to carry your ID at all times, my french/african friend was arrested for forgetting his residence card and held by the police for seven days. He lost his job and apartment and was only released after getting the consulate involved. He was a legal resident and not committing or suspected of any crimes when the cops approached him for his ID. I (white female expat) was not asked for my ID by police once in ten years of living there, and all stories I've heard about white expats being found without ID involved them being allowed to call a friend to retrieve it (my friend could have done this but wasn't allowed).
Or was. Let's hope she's a better person now. Being a TV screenwriter, showrunner, executive producer and director isn't proof of improvement, but it sounds as if she's at least stopped attacking people at parties.
Load More Replies...Thank you to the woman who posted this. I've been wondering why there are so many racists, and just general stupidity on Bored Panda for awhile now. I guess it's as simple as because it's tolerated here. Racism is everywhere in America. You can't get away from it. It's the perfect combination of idiocy and evil. I bet this post will be deleted, or invisible soon because of all the down votes. Racists hate being called racists. Keep fighting the good fight good people. I've just got to add something for the especially intellectually challenged folks. You can stop pointing out that she wouldn't have been involved with the police at all if she weren't a criminal. That is obvious to the very stupidest reader. That is not the point of her post. The point is that the police let her off, despite her being a criminal, because she is white. That is white privilege. Do you not get it? Really?!
100% agreement. Like they are missing the WHOLE point of the post and only focusing on the same opinions they give day in and say out. People! She knows shes wrong that's part of the post. smdh

Holy s**t the judgement in these comments. She's airing out her skeletons, how can people not see this? She's not bragging, she's raising attention to the s**t that's going on. People who looked at this post and saw HER totally missed the f*****g point. If that makes any sense.
That's because she never says "I am sorry. I was an a*****e". She just wants others to get away with the same things. She should have gotten a criminal record.
Load More Replies...She has a good reason and it does kind of support blm, but I am disgusted of what she did. Cops should NOT have let her get away with that much.
Is that thing about Dylann Roof true? And the story about the police trying to convince a teenager to say the weed is his (Mexican) friends. US, you have serious problems over there! And until now everyone thought this is normal and a good way of living? You are worst than Nazi Germany was!
The Dylan Roof anecdote above is a bit confusing. It is true that the police bought him a meal. By the way, I really don't recommend the comparison with Nazi Germany as some people might think that you're saying that mass murder of Jews, Roma, gay men, Slavs, the disabled, etc. is not as bad as police brutality. Otherwise, I'm totally in agreement with you that the inequities are horrible. The black girl getting jail while the white girls got probation was a clear-cut case of racism.
Load More Replies...She does have a point tho I had a troubled youth with let's say numerous substance abuse issues when I got caught with drugs ( and I mean hard drugs) I would get them taken away and escorted home and when friend's of mine who were Latin or black got caught it was straight to the detention center I'm ashamed to say I actually never thought of it that way or made the connection until I saw this article no matter the personal feelings towards this lady it does ask a little reflection from us and that never hurts
me and my fiance were pulled over because he went over the divider into the hov so we could get out of traffic. wen the cop ask for his liscense and stuff wen he came back he gave my fiance his liscense back and said just go on and try not to do it again. he gave no ticket just let us go and said he had somewhere else to b. my friend who is black switched lanes without a blinker and got a ticket for wreckless driving...she was going 25mph on a 20mph street. that right there shows u the difference in how cops treat ppl. i later found out she was excused from the ticket bc they thought it was ridiculous but still we get let go for something thats actually wrong and ur not supposed to do while my friend who is black gets a ticket for no reason at all. to this day i wonder wat would have happened if she told him her brother in law who is black worked for the same department the cop who pulled her over worked for lol
Nobody gets a ticket for failure to signal a turn, unless it's while committing a secondary illegal act or causing an accident. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I don't believe your friend. Regardless of color, that doesn't happen because as a stand alone offense you can't be ticketed for it.

I too understand the point of this thread. But all I'll say is, I'm a white female and literally have never got a slap on the wrist or a go ahead and get home dear. Literally went to jail 98% of the times I've been pulled over or I received a giant ticket for going 45 in a 40 when I honestly did not know the area. From having weed on me to a state trooper swearing I "sped up" as he put his lights on. (I didn't ) so while it may happen to most, it's not all. And there's definitely 2 sides to every pancake ;)
I didn't break laws by being a drunken shoplifter. Funny the police left me alone!
Damn. I've gotten 2 tickets for running stop signs, once while I was crying so hard from being suddenly fired that I didn't see it, and once when my brakes failed on a steep hill. Once when I was 10 I jaywalked and a cop explained it was illegal and let me go. Other than that... I've kept my nose clean, I guess.
I think what's more important to consider is what a turd this gal was/maybe still is.
RICH White girl for sure. I’m white and I have to seriously watch myself and a*s kiss every police officer I’ve ever dealt with. I mind my mouth, keep my hands on view and work HARD to de-escalate anything during the interaction. I’ve also been arrested for being too compliant and charged because I chose not to get a solicitor, I hadn’t committed the crime and still got it twisted on me. We have a Rich/Poor divide where I come from. Sick of Rich white people apologising for ‘my’ privilege.
Or beautiful. Beautiful girls are the ones that get passes, not ugly ones such as myself. I've had zero privileges due to the way I look.

Funny how none of these people can provide of their so-called "white privilege" crimes they got away with, alsmost as if they are making s**t up
When I was 14 I took my moms car out for a joy ride. No license or learners. I got into an accident that was my fault by t-boning a car. There was a cop right behind me. She pulled up behind me, did the whole report thing and took me home to my mom. I was put on 6 months probation. At 16, I was caught stealing cigs from a grocery store. The store owner and cops allowed me to call my dad to pick me up. Went back to court and got put on another 6 months probation that didnt last the whole 6 months. I honestly only remember going to see my PO a few times.
Women have special privileges. Especially attractive women. Ask your ugly friend....
I'm honestly shocked at how many in the comments are being intentionally obtuse, completely unwilling to even try and see the point that's being made here. Did the OP do some pretty reprehensible stuff? Yes! The point however is not that she shouldn't have escaped any kind of negative consequence, it's that she didn't! Hence, she is - or least should be - a glaring example of white privilege. It's not that complicated.
It's not white privilege tho is it... It's having tits privilege... A white guy never would of got away with this stuff..
Hahaha. The posted comments to the article could be taken straight out of the book White Fragility.
The article shows testimonies of those willing to be honest and vulnerable. Many of the posted comments seem to lack empathy and appear to assign blame...a very common deflection response. Opportunity missed.
First, it's incredible that Krista Vernoff turned out okay considering all the CRIMES she committed, including VIOLENT crimes. That said, following is a true event that reinforces the fact of racism. In December, 1983, a jewelry store in Santa Barbara was robbed. The Harlem Globetrotters happened to be in town, and 3 of them were on State Street (a main street, which runs through downtown with retail stores and restaurants). They left a jewelry store about a half-hour after the other jewelry store was robbed. They were waiting for a cab when they were surrounded by police, who pulled their guns and made them get on the ground, then handcuffed. The only thing in common the Harlem Globetrotters had with the suspects is that they were black, and they were wearing athletic warmup suits. If nothing else, consider how tall basketball players are; that difference alone (the real criminals weren't nearly as tall) should have made the police realize they couldn't be the criminals.
I agree there is such a thing as "white privilege" but it is not a problem to the extent as to rioting and defunding the police. It's young people who had stupid parents not raise them to respect any and all people regardless of color. Me, yes I consider myself lucky and blessed that my parents taught me to respect others. Color was not even in the equation. I consider everyone created equal no matter the color of their skin. God created man in His like image. It doesn't say anything about color!! ps, defunding the police is the most stupidest thing I've ever heard. Don't worry about everybody else you just worry about you and how you treat others.
Ew Carmen Davis u are one gross a*s racist person. Educate yourself so ignorant. White privilege just dripping off you. But go ahead only worry about yourself. The apathy is appalling along w the ignorance. No one is safe until we all are!

I was taken to the station once after a stop, because I had an out headlight, for a bounced check 15 years prior. I didn't even know about it! The cop let me drive behind him to the station with another cop following me and sit with them at their desks. Though it was not a dangerous situation, I believe my skin color is what allowed that. I'm embarrassed to say, I have never thought of it before this thread.
I got charged and arrested with a felony over violence... My bail was $50,000. The interrogation officer & judge said my case was BS and I was set free and didn't even have to go to court. My record says arrested for "suspicion" and found innocent. 20 hours in booking and 6 hours behind bars.. What a waste of time. Lol. .. Worst thing is they ignored medical treatment for my broken finger I got about 5 mins prior to arrest. No pain meds .. Nothing.
I don't know much about the police in the America except what was said in the internet, but I wonder if ALL your police were allowed to carry hand gun everywhere and anytime? where I'm from, they were only armed with baton but even that was quite rare. we fear the police as well but more like a stern dad/principal figure that you can't joke around with.
'Cause guns are legal over there and probably not where you live? So it's a gamble if a person might be carrying? Our police have guns and guns are not allowed for your 'personal' protection in my country. A baton is illegal to have on you as well. You are allowed to use your body parts to fight off an assailant! Cool!

It really cracks me up with all these white dudes complaining that it's "female privilege". If female privilege was a thing then women would be the dominant gender. But we're not, we're still seen as less than compared to men. We're not equal either yet sadly. White men want to be oppressed so badly when they are the ones who society completely caters to. No, what this woman has is WHITE privilege. If she was black she would have been shot or still in prison because of her crimes. And honestly she deserves to be in jail for all the c**p she's done. But that's not the point of this.
Okay... Generally speaking you are right. Women have been and are, held back and considered lesser in comparison to men in many areas of life. However, I think it is disingenous to pretend that some women aren't let off certain infractions in a way that a man rarely is. If you think about it is because we're seen as the 'little woman' who needs protection. The macho cop lets us off so we don't have to worry our 'pretty little heads'. They are showing their male privilege 'look at the power I have to make your problems go away'. Of course it mostly happens to the prettier women so it is more 'Attractive Female Privilege'. I appreciate that female privilege is a strange term when there is still discrimination against women and I personally don't like women who play up being helpless in order to try and get their own way. Doesn't make it less of a fact though.
Load More Replies...OOOH look at me I'm a douche bag and got away with it. So let's defund the police. What an idiot. I'm not saying what's been happening was right, but I also know that said person just got out of prison for some pretty violent c**p and was getting picked up again on a WARRANT so if you've already been down for rape, murder, armed robbery or some other violent crime (not sure what his was just an example) AND you go for an officers weapon less than lethal or otherwise, AND you attempt to use said weapon on the officer, AND you flee..... well play stupid games, win stupid prizes. This idiots rant means nothing other than she's just as big of a POS, just a free one. You know who this nation should be crying and protesting over? Breonna Taylor. SHE was wrongfully killed. She is whom I shed tears for. She was an innocent EMT that did nothing wrong but go to bed that night. Not condoning the rest, just making a point.
Wow so cops should be judge jury and executioner now? I agree if someone has a weapon and comes after someone that's self defense but unarmed black people being shot in the back or while they're handcuffed or while your sitting on their neck is straight up murder and as for priors that has nothing to do w being murdered. Load More Replies...I don't see why anyone is mad about the Dylan roof thing. If you watch any of the multiple police/true crime shows, you'll see it's super common for police to act friendly and nice to suspects to get them to cooperate.
Do they definitely do that with the black people in custody? Make nice? I'm in the UK and don't watch those types of shows so really don't know the answer. Being filmed doesn't seem to make officers behave better but does it make a difference when they know for sure that certain footage will be used on a TV show? There will be contracts in place over what can/can't be used so I expect it does to some extent. Also the problem with the Dylann Roof thing is that facts got distorted and people think he was taken to a Burger King. It wasn't that - he was bought a burger and given it while in custody at the police station. They have a duty to feed him.

can we please not take advise on how to be a good person by a woman who cleary was a criminal all her life? It's like... someone would come and say. Yes....I raped a lot of women and always got off easy. But guys.... there are surely a lot of other rapists, that have the face much harsher consequences because of their skin color. I'm asking myself...what dafuq did I just read here. It is radiculous... It's not about her explaining BLM, defund the police or racial problems in the end. That women had clearly no respect for people all her life.
I once shot a man in cold blood. He was unarmed. He was just in our AO. I was ordered to do it and I followed my training and the order. I can't tell you if it was an unlawful order or not, it wasn't during normal operations. My point is that training and orders play the primary role in an authority killing someone. When you add any kind of discrimination, things become really screwed up. Killing someone in cold blood isn't ok. These cops don't recognize that right now, but in time they will.
The moral of this is to never go anywhere near Krista Vernoff! Sounds like a total nutter!
So what is the point? White women are less likely to commit a crime?
The point is that she got away with some serious s**t because she is a white woman. A black man would have been persecuted or even shot for probably all of what she did.

Blugeagua u seem to really understand what this thread was about. Everyone is so far up their own a*s they can only see it from their bubble of white privilege. This woman is very aware what she did was utterly wrong but bc she's white she got away w only a slap on the wrist had it been a black person they would've been shot in the back when running away. Stop disputing whether or not there's racism and police brutality for gods sake and I sure as hell would like to be a part of this female privilege everyone is talking about. Maybe then we can stop being raped
Nobody claims that women don't get raped or attacked. Obviously, it happens. But it happens to men, too. The imaginary concept of "female privelage" is super unhelpful, but here's where the thought comes from. We do sometimes get treated nicer than men by normal decent men, just because we're female. Like when I was 19 and forgot my driver's liscense at home, got stopped because my taillight was out and I didn't know, and I apologized and started crying. The cop softened his tone a little, and let me go with a warning. I didn't cry to manipulate him. I was just extremely upset because I was the type of kid who never broke rules. I was just sad. Was going to respectfully accept a ticket. Now, what if I had been a boy? Don't you think it's likely the cop would think I was a total weirdo, or I was drunk? Would he have reacted the same? I don't think so. And how about all the times women don't get punched in the face by their friends for acting like a total a*****e, because "never hit a lady", but a man who acted the same way would get punched? Yes, there are a lot of men who beat up women, but we all know that's abuse and those women didn't deserve it. I'm talking like maybe you get drunk at a bar and act totally foul and purposely put out your cigarette in a guy's drink? In movies, the guy with the drink would punch another man who did that, but wouldn't punch a woman who did it. Women are disadvantaged and vulnerable in some ways, but privelaged in others. But honestly I'd say the same is true for men!!! My husband was a victim of sexual assault, but he's been told by some women that he has no right including himself in the MeToo movement, or that men don't understand, or "shut up, man." Men don't report it much if they get raped, because it's a lot more likely their manliness will be doubted. What kind of horrible c**p is that?! Women aren't told they aren't "womanly" for being raped. They're told they were innocent victims. Yeah, some people will say "she asked for it," but only people with a rapey mindset say that c**p. Most people don't. And yet most people think it's funny to see a guy drop the soap in a movie. EVERYONE gets treated horribly in some way or another. I wish everyone would get treated with respect and there was justice for all, but that isn't real life. Female privelage shouldn't be a saying but neither should male privelage or White privelage etc. Why don't we just talk about how douchy people act like douches and they need to cut it out.

Load More Replies...And if you see my post on s panda thread last week, you'd see I had the police storm my house and harass me due to computer error and I I'm certain that if I wasn't white, it would have gone so much worse that it did. No one is saying bad stuff doesn't happen to white ppl, it's more about the fact that, in general, black ppl and poc face harsher punishments etc that white ppl. This is in general and backed up statistically, but there are always going to be cases that don't follow the general trend, like your experiences with the officers. I'm sorry you were treated that way by the police, it isn't right for anyone to be treated "guilty until proven innocent"
Load More Replies...I understand that your experiences were quite different because of poverty, social class and family dynamics. So when it comes to encounters with the law, it's going to feel like quite a stretch that being white gave you even a slight advantage over a black man with the same poverty, social class and family dynamics as yourself. I'm not disagreeing with your experiences, which certainly affected you badly. On the other hand, there are cases where racism is absolutely a factor (as are social class, gender, etc.).
Load More Replies...You can set the bar high and listen only to Black sociologists if you want (I hope you're open to other academics, as well). I'd rather avoid a tight template for discussing race relations. For me, not limiting the conversation makes for more open dialogue and learning from a variety of experiences.

I was assaulted by a cop in the elevator at the police station by a cop that wasn't my arresting officer. My arresting officer was there and did nothing.

The black girl getting jail while the white girls got probation was a clear-cut case of racism.

me and my fiance were pulled over because he went over the divider into the hov so we could get out of traffic. wen the cop ask for his liscense and stuff wen he came back he gave my fiance his liscense back and said just go on and try not to do it again. he gave no ticket just let us go and said he had somewhere else to b. my friend who is black switched lanes without a blinker and got a ticket for wreckless driving...she was going 25mph on a 20mph street. that right there shows u the difference in how cops treat ppl. i later found out she was excused from the ticket bc they thought it was ridiculous but still we get let go for something thats actually wrong and ur not supposed to do while my friend who is black gets a ticket for no reason at all. to this day i wonder wat would have happened if she told him her brother in law who is black worked for the same department the cop who pulled her over worked for lol

Load More Replies...All I learned was you are a really awful person and I'd be embarrassed to admit all that stuff.
Whit people don't get shot by the police for the same things black people do.
Load More Replies...Wait. Cops always claim a Taser can't kill. So how is it a deadly weapon? ...

Load More Replies...I'm not rich and got caught drunk driving twice and each time was let go w a warning. One time two cops sandwiched my car so I could drive home wo causing an accident. I was 18 and 19 consecutively. Then one time I had a cop completely violate my rights and sued and won. Cops are much worse now than ever they are militarized and taught to racially profile in their training why would the US new military police. They declared a war on race can't deny it it's plainly seen
Load More Replies...So, you think if she were a 'pretty, slim, black woman' would have gotten her to the same point?
Load More Replies...Read the Twitter comment that is second to last! She would have done jail time if she had been a black girl.
Load More Replies...Oh please! Not more crappy stats that you got out of a 'how to prove you are a racist' handbook.
