Flying first class for the very first time can be an exciting experience. Skipping the line and enjoying larger, more comfortable seats, complimentary blankets, and superior snacks definitely elevates the air journey.
Getting an opportunity to fly luxuriously for the first time, redditor u/Horror_Ad4676ThrowRA was set on enjoying it. So when a mother approached her, asking to give away her seat to her son accidentally stuck in the economy, she refused. Feeling guilty about such a rejection, she turned to the AITAH community, asking if what she did was selfish.

In recent years, due to higher demand for luxury travel, airlines have made the first-class experience more affordable than ever before. According to USA Today, you could have expected to pay $300 for a luxurious roundtrip from New York to Chicago or Washington, D.C. For longer routes, like from New York to Los Angeles or Seattle to Atlanta, the cost reached $1,100 at the minimum. Meanwhile, a trip from Los Angeles to Hawaii at the time would cost about $1,200.
The team at CN Traveler did a little more digging and found out that in 2023, the average difference at American Airlines between first class and economy seats was $235.85. The highest cost gap between these two options was at Delta Airlines, while the lowest was at American Airlines.
According to 2017 data, people who chose to pay such a difference and enjoy a more luxurious air journey had a total income of $100,000 or more per year, with 15% saying they usually flew first class. Meanwhile, 7% of respondents who earned up to $50,00 reported selecting luxurious travel.
Upgraded Points founder and CEO, Alex Miller, assures that the price for a first-class flight is definitely worth it to have a more comfortable journey. “Flying first-class is a great experience that all interested travelers should treat themselves to at least once,” he says.

This aside, usually the first thing you notice is the cabin space. There’s significantly more of it, and the seats can be reclined to the point where a person can lie on them flat, like a bed.
The additional perks actually start before you even board the plane, with priority check-in, security lines, and boarding, along with free checked bags, that can take off the stress of air travel. International flights are also likely to include VIP airport lounge access.
On the aircraft, you can expect complimentary alcohol and more and better quality food and snack options. “It’s not like in coach where they slap a tray down on the table — chicken or beef,” says Brett Snyder, founder of the airline industry blog Crankyflier. In addition, passengers can find bigger entertainment screens, sleep masks, toiletries, noise-canceling headphones, and pajamas. The service is also of higher quality, with flight attendants ready to fulfill travelers’ requests.

I don’t believe this one, no cabin crew would ask this of a passenger without offering them compensation, an alternative flight etc, especially if you are already seated on the plane. I might believe it if it was a local airline, but not an international flight.
I'm having a hard time believing this one too. Why wasn't this fixed BEFORE they got on the plane? Why didn't mom and son take a later flight? Also, why would they ask a woman who is OBIVIOUSLY traveling WITH someone and not ask a person flying solo?

Those for her and her husband and she books those in business class, and then once on the plane, she makes others move so the children can sit them. She says it works 100% of the time because her children are 4 and 6. That wouldn't work with me because I would let those kids sit with strangers and never once look up from my book.

Yes, absolute rubbish. Mum has a First Class ticket and son Economy and both go back to Business Class? Apart from that, no flight attendant would ever behave like that in first class. One complaint from a platinum customer about something like that is enough to make them push the coffee through economy again.

Nobody risked their job to try to get a child into first class. I'm surprised it didn't end with everyone clapping for the boyfriend.
Assuming this is a true story, the flight attendant was at fault: she needs to keep her personal opinons out of the execution of her duties as a flight attendant and those do not include glaring at a customer. Also, the mother asked a question, she was answered and that's that, just move on. It's weird though: if only the child was placed in economy and the mother first class, mother could have offered her first class seat to someone in economy, but apparently she wasn't prepared to do that for her son.
In my opinion, The only reason why the flight attendant even agreed with the mother is probably because she knew her, or because she was a higher up of some kind. But even then NO she should not have given up HER seat for someone else's child. It was the mother's responsibility and SHE made a mistake and if it bothered the mother soo bad. If I or someone else has paid for a first class ticket, then I am damn well going to sit in first class. If it had been a free upgrade then I might have relinquished. However, on any airline I have ever been on the seats are allocated long before you get on the plane and the woman should have known she was separated from her child and done something about it then. Waiting till you get on the plane, knowing full well that you are in a different part of the aircraft to your very young child is just stupid. If anything, she should have been offering her first class ticket to someone in business class so she could sit with her child in business class, with compensation from the airline if it was their mistake.

I don't understand why she was the only one being asked. Why didn't the flight attendant make an announcement to first class asking if anyone would switch. A seat swap can and should only be considered on a like for like basis. Y class to Y, J to J, F to F. Simple as that. There is no other swap worth considering. Full stop. There was an "error" with the kid's ticket, that is the airline's problem, not yours. Now get me that glass of wine I asked for.

I flew when I was 5, my sister was 6. We found a row in the back, and sat on the floor, and had a great time. I remember see the lady's ankles in front of where I had flopped on the floor. Kids don't even sit in their own seats given the choice.

If I knew what airline expected this, and treated a customer so in appropriately….I would NOT fly with them. It was very wrong of the flight crew to ask the woman to give up her first class seat. The parent of the kid could have switched out with the kid…split up the time, etc. versus expecting someone else that had paid for this to give it up!!! This use of the child to promote an entitled attitude is even more outrageous. I am glad it wasn’t me….. I would not only have kept the seat my boyfriend paid for….but challenged the woman who was trying to intimidate me into giving it up!!!

I absolutely do! The Flight Attendent was way wrong! I think she should write the Airline, if it’s the one I think it is I thing they will give her good compensation for her being embarrassed and upset by the ordeal! Be sure to enclose the frequent flyer number for your boyfriend on the letter. Heck - I refused to change my aisle set for a middle seat to a woman whose little girl was sitting next to me. No need to explain why you want to keep your seat and don't feel guilty for not trading! In my opinion if the attendant was on woman s side, it was because they didn't want to refund money for her error.. If the lady wants to sit w her kid then she can sit in regular seats and maybe offer her first class seat to the person next to her son and possibly get a discount for the error... I don't think someone should have to feel guilty for others mistakes, nor have to explain their reason of why they won't trade and it none of anyone's business who paid for it, if you didn't tell them then the flight attendant probably broke privacy policy there too!

I find it funny that a number of people claimed the story was false because of the line about the 6 yr old appreciating it more. I desperately want to catch a foul or throwaway ball at a baseball game. I'm an uberfan! But if I even try for a ball nearby a kid (not on, standing next to, pushing, or taking from a kid), I hear disgusted noises or comments behind my back about how the kid deserves it more. You mean the little kid that won't remember the game? The 3 or 4 yr old a player hands a ball? I didn't deserve one at the few games I attended as a little kid. The second that ball is in my hands, it'll have that player's name, the game, and the date on it. Just one. What everyone else says, is accurate. I have read repeated stories about either parents trying to get a free seat for their kids after gambling on a free seat or just trying to force someone because they don't want to be appart. I get they want their kids together but they do it at other people's expenses not their own. How is first class comparable to economy. It was non of their business who paid, it was a pricier seat and it was yours. People are extremely entitled and completely lack any common sense. You wouldn't have been compensated for your sacrifice had you done it.
How would anyone know who'd enjoy the seat better? Women need not be gaslighted as being inept to enjoying something less than a boy or any other person would enjoy it. The airline needed a better way to please the boy for their mistake, one way may be to publicly ask if anyone would be willing to move, let it be with no responses, and keep it as civil as possible with the boy and his parent(s). There's compensation as in money or a first-class seat coupon for a next flight for one parent and the child or two parents and child if both parents were supposed to be with him, other parent not involved in the matter must book and pay same time to be with or near the parent and child, though it may not matter officially which parent gets the coupon and who pays.
My advice for this paying airline passenger is to remain steadfast literally in her seat & don't move for anyone! Anyone that has the nerve to ask you to move should be thrown off the plane including the Flight Attendant!

I think I might have said something along the lines of - well, your kid sits here and you go back to economy. No way would there be that much of an error that someone who had paid for first class be bumped back into economy (without giving major compensation let alone the price difference refunded). The entire story sounds like "and then everybody was supposed to clap". First, the boyfriend's "speech" was over-the-top. Second, sorry, no "high rated first class" has only 8 seats in two rows for a 12 hour flight. Even the most mediocre business class for those flights have at least 16 seats. In fact, if the business class ws halfway luxurious, the "seats" would be flat beds, in three rows - singles next to the windows, and pairs in the middle, not two rows of 4 pairs of seats. It was your right to sit & take the advantage of your 1st class seat. But don't expect karma points or angels singing your praises etc. This happens all of the time. Someone does something that is just for themselves but want to talk about it as if they can get a response to prove that their actions were not just advantageous but noble too. YTA- because this story is so fake. I mean first off a flight attendant isn't going to ask a First Class passenger to give up their paid for seat for freaking economy. MAYBE if it's just a change of seats within First Class but that's it. The story tried to seam plausible, but simply wasn't. We're supposed to believe that the mother and son checked in, the mother immediately saw the "booking error" (as their tickets clearly showed them having seats in two separate locations), then chose not to address it until they literally boarded the plane? On top of that, somehow the OP was singled out, out of all the other people in first class? The story was already fishy when it went from "my boyfriend bought me a first class ticket" to realizing both of them were taking the same flight to the same place. So, everything was supposed to be completely normal with her sitting in economy for that long a flight while the bf sat in first class until his generosity changed the circumstances? None of this math is mathing.

Where do these clowns come from? If the seat that she is sitting in was paid for then that's a wash and that brat will have to sit in business class. This has become a trend where if you guilt shame someone hard enough into a corner they bend to your will. It was a made up story! It says that her boyfriend eventually stood up and argued her case with the flight attendant. But elsewhere it infers that her boyfriend was not actually traveling with her!
At 6 years this kid would not know the difference. It took you this long to be able to travel in first class irrespective of how you got the ticket. Why was it her who was asked. She wasn’t alone. Whether this seat was a gift or not is irrelevant! Someone else could’ve been asked. Besides, a six year old is much smaller than an adult. I think, as a 6-yo kid, he'll have lots more opportunities to fly first class in his life. For OP, it may actually be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Tell the kid to stay in school and become a lawyer or something. Then he can fly first class whenever he wants. He can even take his mom along if they're still talking by then.
Parents traveling with minor children, especially young children should be required by law to book seats next to their children when purchasing the tickets and airlines should be required by law, if assigning seats to place minors next to their parent and stop imposing on other passengers. In most cases, these parents are just trying to get a free upgrade. They always demand a better, more desirable, more expensive seat, and never the reverse.

Absolutely justified. I don't believe she had booked 2 first class tickets initially nor was there a booking error...as her son went to Economy and SHE went back to Business class. If there really was a booking error, and no upgrade seats available, as a mother myself I would have given my first class seat to my son if I really wanted to let him have the experience, and I would have sat in economy...after getting a refund from airline for the difference in seat pricing having already paid for first class.

The situation reads as fake 1, how would they know you didn’t pay for your ticket 2, your boyfriend was there so they’d be splitting a couple up. 3, Go online and try to order a child’s seat in 2 different class as the adult. It won’t happen. You cannot book a child seat on its own. A child seat has to be accompanied by an adult one unless you pay and make arrangements for an unaccompanied minor. You pay a fee and fill out actual forms for the airline to take the responsibility of the unaccompanied child. The fee for this is an extra $150 each way. My son just turned 16 and this summer is the 1st I don’t have to go through this process

If the woman wanted to sit with her son, she should’ve asked somebody in economy to switch places with her in first class and then dealt with the airlines screwing up the reservations once she arrived at her destination . The woman refusing to move, was totally in her, right..

I recently started flying business class, and it's a no for me. I'm never giving up my seat for anyone. You get what you pay for, and if you or a significant other pays for business class, than business class it is.
I really don't get all this drama about switching seats. Whenever I book a flight I make sure I pay/reserve the seats I want. If you are unable to plan ahead how us that my fault?
I seriously doubt that a 6 year old child will remember a first class seat versus an economy seat. What he/or she will remember is just being on an airplane. It was rude of the flight attendant to even ask regardless who paid for the seat. Did the flight attendant ask any of the other first class passengers to give up their seats? If not, wow! Then to glare at the first class passenger for not giving up her first class experience. The flight attendant should be reprimanded.

There is an age limit as to who travels in first class. I believe no one under 14 years old can be in first class. I can be wrong. No one wants to pay top dollar in first class and business class to hear children misbehaving or crying.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. As a mother, I would never ask someone to switch out their first class seat. I would ask someone in coach to switch seats so I could sit with my child and ask for the airline to refund the first class fare if it truly was their mistake. But that mother was rude to expect you to give up your seat.

I don’t understand why they waited until people were seated. When I traveled alone I would frequently be asked to switch seats before boardIng. They would call my name and ask if I was ok with switching, usually it was a comparable seat, aisle for aisle, I’d get a new boardIng pass. Asking after someone already is seated just seems odd. It feels targeted and not appropriate. The mom should have asked before boarding. The op said no and no means no and is a complete sentence. No further explanation or reasons needed. They didn’t ask anyone else? Just her? They probably thought she’d switch but she wasn’t alone, she was with someone else so it’s rude to break up people traveling together but you downgrade to fix your situation you don’t ask others to downgrade to fix yours.
I’ve been asked to move before, when I was in coach and flying alone if it was a comparable seat(not the middle lol) I’d move, but because it was a similar seat not downgrading. I was asked to move a few years ago so a dad could sit with his adult daughter but I was sitting with my husband and we had a tight connection so moving several rows back would have complicated that and I wasn’t alone. So that time I declined, the daughter was fine, she had an iPad and seemed ok the whole flight. Anyway, I don’t see the harm in asking but no means no, you move on. There are other passengers just because the one who was asked first said no doesn’t mean you harrsss them until they move, ask someone else but no means no so if no one wants to switch, too bad. Also in the past I was always asked before I boarded, the flight attendant would call my name and ask me to switch and have me the option of saying no, no pressure.

It should not that the woman didn’t pay for the ticket herself. That does not make her any less deserving on that seat. And besides, someone did pay for the ticket (her boyfriend). If I had purchased someone a First Class seat, and later I find out that they were pressured into downgrading, possibly with no partial refund or compensation whatsoever, I would be livid and had I known that outcome in advance, I would have booked in a lower cabin to save the expense. And the fact the mother used her 6-year old to send the other passenger on a guilt trip is really disgusting behavior and a failure as a role model; absolute poor parenting. And a flight attendant has no business trying to shuffle people around into different cabins; that is what ground staff (gate agents) are for. Perhaps this particular flight attendant is friends of that mother which could explain the dirty looks and lack of friendliness. Do we even know if the mother & son were even Revenue passengers?!

I certainly do think that she was justified. It was a gift; even if it wasn't, it was her seat. I promise you that a six-year-old does not care whether a seat is first class. Give the kid his tablet, snacks, and possibly a window seat; that kid is delighted. On the other hand, the mother must have lived a life of entitlement. She did not want to sit with those of us who would be grateful for a safe and enjoyable flight.

It's on the airline to fix the problem. If there is no seats then giving them a credit for the tickets and or gifting the return flight first class is what should have happened. Asking another passenger to give up their seat for the airlines error or the mother's is never the resort. Or the "asked and answered" way to go. I'd complain about the stink eye. Had the Mother booked 2 first class tickets, the GATE AGENT would’ve been trying to resolve the matter including offering her seats on another flight. Second, no airline host or hostess is gonna do anything more than ask one time (if that) and they would have asked persons traveling ALONE first. There are a lot of entitled people in the world but this Mother would’ve been the mother of them all (pun intended) if she said a 6 year old would get more from the experience than this young woman. And, how would the Mother or the Air Hostess know who paid for their ticket? They wouldn’t. I’ll stop here but NOPE…this was made up for clicks and comments.

I think it would be even better if all seats and services are upgraded to some kind of happy medium, keep one price, serve all as equals and let people sitting room to relax. Then book people properly, people booking late made to understand their location(s) on board are their locations even if that's separating family and friends. As for children in need of adult supervision, that's the airline's business if they willingly take a child and parent separated or improperly book them, not the adjacent passenger's responsibilities to move or attend to children. This passenger was right to keep that seat.

This story doesn't make any sense and to be honest I think its fake. 1.) If you are issued a ticket they will never ask you to leave your seat. They might announce but theif anyone is willing to give up their seat for airline credits but they will not single a person out and ask them to give up their seat. Especially a first class seat. 2.) Why would a woman flying business class ask a person in first class to give up their seat? First class in long haul flights tends to be very private, and I doubt the stewardess would allow someone from Business Class to come up to First class to ask them to give up their seat. This also is why it doesn't make sense. 3.) Also she said the lady went back to "business class" - again First class seats on long haul flights if its a major airlines tends to be extremely private you would never see anyone from business class or economy. This story is made up. I find it sad that this story was never scrutinized. But I guess its good click bait.

Not quite sure why the flight attendant would be put out with OP for declining the switch. Unless this plane was one of a kind there were others in first class that s/he could have approached. And, yes, the child would have enjoyed first class - as a child I always, always loved first class - but I wouldn't say "more" than OP and it's not it's not on her. (I have given up a first class seat due to an airline booking error for a child too young to be UAM; but I was compensated with 2 free upgrade vouchers for future travel.)

If you were obligated to move seats they would have TOLD you to move. If they ask, it's your choice. If they needed to sit together so badly surely there were other people in first class who could switch or the Mom can go sit in economy and some other fortunate soul can have her first class seat. I don’t believe this one, no cabin crew would ask this of a passenger without offering them compensation, an alternative flight etc, especially if you are already seated on the plane. I might believe it if it was a local airline, but not an international flight.

Those for her and her husband and she books those in business class, and then once on the plane, she makes others move so the children can sit them. She says it works 100% of the time because her children are 4 and 6. That wouldn't work with me because I would let those kids sit with strangers and never once look up from my book.

Assuming this is a true story, the flight attendant was at fault: she needs to keep her personal opinons out of the execution of her duties as a flight attendant and those do not include glaring at a customer. Also, the mother asked a question, she was answered and that's that, just move on. It's weird though: if only the child was placed in economy and the mother first class, mother could have offered her first class seat to someone in economy, but apparently she wasn't prepared to do that for her son.
In my opinion, The only reason why the flight attendant even agreed with the mother is probably because she knew her, or because she was a higher up of some kind. But even then NO she should not have given up HER seat for someone else's child. It was the mother's responsibility and SHE made a mistake and if it bothered the mother soo bad. If I or someone else has paid for a first class ticket, then I am damn well going to sit in first class. If it had been a free upgrade then I might have relinquished. However, on any airline I have ever been on the seats are allocated long before you get on the plane and the woman should have known she was separated from her child and done something about it then. Waiting till you get on the plane, knowing full well that you are in a different part of the aircraft to your very young child is just stupid. If anything, she should have been offering her first class ticket to someone in business class so she could sit with her child in business class, with compensation from the airline if it was their mistake.

I flew when I was 5, my sister was 6. We found a row in the back, and sat on the floor, and had a great time. I remember see the lady's ankles in front of where I had flopped on the floor. Kids don't even sit in their own seats given the choice.

If I knew what airline expected this, and treated a customer so in appropriately….I would NOT fly with them. It was very wrong of the flight crew to ask the woman to give up her first class seat. The parent of the kid could have switched out with the kid…split up the time, etc. versus expecting someone else that had paid for this to give it up!!! This use of the child to promote an entitled attitude is even more outrageous. I am glad it wasn’t me….. I would not only have kept the seat my boyfriend paid for….but challenged the woman who was trying to intimidate me into giving it up!!!

In my opinion if the attendant was on woman s side, it was because they didn't want to refund money for her error.. If the lady wants to sit w her kid then she can sit in regular seats and maybe offer her first class seat to the person next to her son and possibly get a discount for the error... I find it funny that a number of people claimed the story was false because of the line about the 6 yr old appreciating it more. I desperately want to catch a foul or throwaway ball at a baseball game. I'm an uberfan! But if I even try for a ball nearby a kid (not on, standing next to, pushing, or taking from a kid), I hear disgusted noises or comments behind my back about how the kid deserves it more. You mean the little kid that won't remember the game? The 3 or 4 yr old a player hands a ball? I didn't deserve one at the few games I attended as a little kid. What everyone else says, is accurate. I have read repeated stories about either parents trying to get a free seat for their kids after gambling on a free seat or just trying to force someone because they don't want to be appart. I get they want their kids together but they do it at other people's expenses not their own. How is first class comparable to economy. It was non of their business who paid, it was a pricier seat and it was yours. People are extremely entitled and completely lack any common sense. You wouldn't have been compensated for your sacrifice had you done it.
How would anyone know who'd enjoy the seat better? Women need not be gaslighted as being inept to enjoying something less than a boy or any other person would enjoy it. The airline needed a better way to please the boy for their mistake, one way may be to publicly ask if anyone would be willing to move, let it be with no responses, and keep it as civil as possible with the boy and his parent(s). There's compensation as in money or a first-class seat coupon for a next flight for one parent and the child or two parents and child if both parents were supposed to be with him, other parent not involved in the matter must book and pay same time to be with or near the parent and child, though it may not matter officially which parent gets the coupon and who pays.

I think I might have said something along the lines of - well, your kid sits here and you go back to economy. No way would there be that much of an error that someone who had paid for first class be bumped back into economy (without giving major compensation let alone the price difference refunded). The entire story sounds like "and then everybody was supposed to clap". First, the boyfriend's "speech" was over-the-top. Second, sorry, no "high rated first class" has only 8 seats in two rows for a 12 hour flight. Even the most mediocre business class for those flights have at least 16 seats. In fact, if the business class ws halfway luxurious, the "seats" would be flat beds, in three rows - singles next to the windows, and pairs in the middle, not two rows of 4 pairs of seats. It was your right to sit & take the advantage of your 1st class seat. But don't expect karma points or angels singing your praises etc. This happens all of the time. The story tried to seam plausible, but simply wasn't. We're supposed to believe that the mother and son checked in, the mother immediately saw the "booking error" (as their tickets clearly showed them having seats in two separate locations), then chose not to address it until they literally boarded the plane? On top of that, somehow the OP was singled out, out of all the other people in first class? The story was already fishy when it went from "my boyfriend bought me a first class ticket" to realizing both of them were taking the same flight to the same place. So, everything was supposed to be completely normal with her sitting in economy for that long a flight while the bf sat in first class until his generosity changed the circumstances? Parents traveling with minor children, especially young children should be required by law to book seats next to their children when purchasing the tickets and airlines should be required by law, if assigning seats to place minors next to their parent and stop imposing on other passengers. In most cases, these parents are just trying to get a free upgrade. They always demand a better, more desirable, more expensive seat, and never the reverse.

The situation reads as fake 1, how would they know you didn’t pay for your ticket 2, your boyfriend was there so they’d be splitting a couple up. 3, Go online and try to order a child’s seat in 2 different class as the adult. It won’t happen. You cannot book a child seat on its own. A child seat has to be accompanied by an adult one unless you pay and make arrangements for an unaccompanied minor. You pay a fee and fill out actual forms for the airline to take the responsibility of the unaccompanied child. The fee for this is an extra $150 each way. My son just turned 16 and this summer is the 1st I don’t have to go through this process

I recently started flying business class, and it's a no for me. I'm never giving up my seat for anyone. You get what you pay for, and if you or a significant other pays for business class, than business class it is.

There is an age limit as to who travels in first class. I believe no one under 14 years old can be in first class. I can be wrong. No one wants to pay top dollar in first class and business class to hear children misbehaving or crying.

I’ve been asked to move before, when I was in coach and flying alone if it was a comparable seat(not the middle lol) I’d move, but because it was a similar seat not downgrading. I was asked to move a few years ago so a dad could sit with his adult daughter but I was sitting with my husband and we had a tight connection so moving several rows back would have complicated that and I wasn’t alone. So that time I declined, the daughter was fine, she had an iPad and seemed ok the whole flight. Anyway, I don’t see the harm in asking but no means no, you move on. There are other passengers just because the one who was asked first said no doesn’t mean you harrsss them until they move, ask someone else but no means no so if no one wants to switch, too bad. Also in the past I was always asked before I boarded, the flight attendant would call my name and ask me to switch and have me the option of saying no, no pressure.

It should not that the woman didn’t pay for the ticket herself. That does not make her any less deserving on that seat. And besides, someone did pay for the ticket (her boyfriend). If I had purchased someone a First Class seat, and later I find out that they were pressured into downgrading, possibly with no partial refund or compensation whatsoever, I would be livid and had I known that outcome in advance, I would have booked in a lower cabin to save the expense. And the fact the mother used her 6-year old to send the other passenger on a guilt trip is really disgusting behavior and a failure as a role model; absolute poor parenting. And a flight attendant has no business trying to shuffle people around into different cabins; that is what ground staff (gate agents) are for. Perhaps this particular flight attendant is friends of that mother which could explain the dirty looks and lack of friendliness. Do we even know if the mother & son were even Revenue passengers?!

I certainly do think that she was justified. It was a gift; even if it wasn't, it was her seat. I promise you that a six-year-old does not care whether a seat is first class. It's on the airline to fix the problem. If there is no seats then giving them a credit for the tickets and or gifting the return flight first class is what should have happened. I’ll take things that never happened for $500! Sorry but this story doesn’t ring true on any level. Had the Mother booked 2 first class tickets, the GATE AGENT would’ve been trying to resolve the matter including offering her seats on another flight. Second, no airline host or hostess is gonna do anything more than ask one time (if that) and they would have asked persons traveling ALONE first. There are a lot of entitled people in the world but this Mother would’ve been the mother of them all (pun intended) if she said a 6 year old would get more from the experience than this young woman. And, how would the Mother or the Air Hostess know who paid for their ticket? They wouldn’t. I’ll stop here but NOPE…this was made up for clicks and comments.
That's one of the boldest, rude requests I've ever heard. If ur both in reg.class seats but separated perhaps u'd move. But 1st class to business? Nope. And what's wrong w.business class for a 6 yr old?

I've heard this same story several times. I doubt if it's true. Just the blog trying to get clicks. However if this did happen to me the flight attendant would be fired as soon as we landed.

Are you the only one they asked to switch seats? How many people are in first class? Ans what business is it of anybody who paid for your ticket. I'm thinking the woman and her child were related to the flight attendant and trying to pull a free seat on first class.

This is tottaly made up. Two 12 hour flights and the flight attrndent giving her the stink eye!? Not happening. If so a kid doesnt need more legroom, free drinks, n better food. If so the mother couldve traded. This lady made up the story to tell everyone she flew first class, which i doubt she flew let alone has class. Lol
I think it would be even better if all seats and services are upgraded to some kind of happy medium, keep one price, serve all as equals and let people sitting room to relax. Then book people properly, people booking late made to understand their location(s) on board are their locations even if that's separating family and friends. As for children in need of adult supervision, that's the airline's business if they willingly take a child and parent separated or improperly book them, not the adjacent passenger's responsibilities to move or attend to children. This passenger was right to keep that seat.
Her BF gave her that seat. HE paid for it and HE decides who sits in it.
The price difference is pretty significant between first class and economy. That's a pretty expensive thing to give up. Was anyone going to compensate her for the price difference? I Don't believe it was a booking error anyway. Didn't she pay attention to her tickets when she purchased her tickets?
The answers to your polling question are terrible. The fact that she did not pay for the ticket has no impact on the answer. Her boyfriend paid for both tickets. When two tickets are bought together, how often are they paid for separately? Your polling answers are skewed to make her look bad.

This story doesn't make any sense and to be honest I think its fake. 1.) If you are issued a ticket they will never ask you to leave your seat. They might announce but theif anyone is willing to give up their seat for airline credits but they will not single a person out and ask them to give up their seat. Especially a first class seat. 2.) Why would a woman flying business class ask a person in first class to give up their seat? First class in long haul flights tends to be very private, and I doubt the stewardess would allow someone from Business Class to come up to First class to ask them to give up their seat. This also is why it doesn't make sense. 3.) Also she said the lady went back to "business class" - again First class seats on long haul flights if its a major airlines tends to be extremely private you would never see anyone from business class or economy. This story is made up. I find it sad that this story was never scrutinized. But I guess its good click bait.
If she wanted to sit with her child she could have given her first class ticket to the person currently sitting in the back and taken his seat.
A huge NTA. Ur friends sided with the woman bcz they are jealous that u got a first class ticket without paying for it ;) and as per tht stupid logic, even the kid didn't pay for his ticket. Irrespective, its sooo disrespectful for them to assume that u didn't pay for it and use tht stupid logic against u. U r in tht seat as per ur name on the boarding pass... period! Not quite sure why the flight attendant would be put out with OP for declining the switch. Unless this plane was one of a kind there were others in first class that s/he could have approached. And, yes, the child would have enjoyed first class - as a child I always, always loved first class - but I wouldn't say "more" than OP and it's not it's not on her. (I have given up a first class seat due to an airline booking error for a child too young to be UAM; but I was compensated with 2 free upgrade vouchers for future travel.)
Real or not, the crew member had no business interfering, not her place! Kid is 6years old, he can wait until he's older to BUY his own damn ticket in 1st Class.Why is mom willing to let a 6yr old sit in 1st Class next to a stranger while her a*s is in Business or Economy. NTA your bf is right HE paid for the tickets through his membership and HIS company is a regular client. This woman is entitled. A small child wouldn't enjoy a 1st class experience in the 1st place. I wouldn't have the utter nerve to even ask another passenger to give up their seat for anyone. A passenger should not ask another passenger to give up their seat in to them no matter their circumstances. The flight attendant should take the word NO for an answer instead of joining in and trying to pressure you into it as well. Your friends are 100 percent in the wrong. IT'S A GIFT FROM YOUR BF! If you were obligated to move seats they would have TOLD you to move. If they ask, it's your choice. If they needed to sit together so badly surely there were other people in first class who could switch or the Mom can go sit in economy and some other fortunate soul can have her first class seat. It's not the end of the world or even a hardship for you not to switch seats. And what do you care if the flight attendant gives you dirty looks? She hasn't done anything to earn your respect for her opinion. This is such a minor thing so don't worry about it.
NTA. Why is it that you only have to refer to a kid when you're demanding free stuff, and just assume that "BeCaUsE HeS a KiD" it would be obligatory to cave to their demands? Just no. I book a seat for a reason, train or plane, and that reason is, I like to have THAT seat. For reasons up to me.

Couple in first class. Flight attendant-let's break them up! Kid needs first class. Sounds like mom knew the FA and what the heck she would leave her kid solo in first class? And prob everyone in first would have to watch him. But then mom would have to go sit with him. Prob on her lap and enjoy it more. Don't give up seats you paid for unless you are getting upgraded. It's not anyone's fault when people book random seats not together. Larger people are booking two seats an then being asked to share the paid seat sometimes. I applaude those that help tall people get better leg room. But now these days people are wrecking the plane and trashing it and putting feet where they don't belong. You know it's a flight. Expect to sit uncomfortably. It's how it is.

Although, I have a hard time believing that the flight attendant would be having that kind of attitude, unless she was related to the entitled mother. If it's true, than she ought to be reported to the airline for causing OP to be uncomfortable. The nerve of some people. SMH!
