It was a regular Sunday when our 22-year-old dog bather headed into work and spent her morning lifting 70- to 80-pound dogs like she had done every day for months. Australian shepherds, a Saint Bernard, a Great Pyrenees, the usual crowd. She had what she assumed were period pains because she was actively bleeding, finished her shift early, went home, and built her cat a cat tree. Just a normal day.

She woke up at 3 a.m. in serious pain, tried a shower, tried the bathroom, tried everything, and eventually woke up her fiancé before heading to the hospital alone at 5 a.m. Her Uber driver had the experience of a lifetime. She was 37 to 38 weeks along and ten centimeters dilated. She called her fiancé, who said they had plenty of time to prepare, and she called back approximately twenty minutes later to clarify that she was, in fact, giving birth today. He got in the car. His tire fell off in the hospital car park, blocking the entire road, requiring a tow truck, and forcing the medical team to pause breaking her water.

The OP smartly used the extra time to request a sandwich and a frozen lemonade from Tim Hortons and was not taking no for an answer. Forty-five minutes after they broke her water, a completely healthy 6-pound 7-ounce baby girl arrived in a world that had absolutely no idea she was coming. The sandwich was also, for the record, delicious.

No positive test, no obvious bump, no morning sickness, no moment of realization. The body just quietly gets on with it while the person living in that body continues lifting giant dogs.

It sounds impossible, but it happens more than most people think, and the reasons vary from hormonal irregularities that mask symptoms to pre-existing conditions that make cycles unpredictable. Studies estimate that 1 in every 400 to 500 women reach the 20-week mark, that is, five full months, before realizing they are pregnant. And 1 in 2,500 women make it all the way to delivery without knowing.
