having been a larger person myself before i lost weight i agree that some is due to trauma and some to can be a medical condition but its also due to eating too much and not moving enough from my own experience i am speaking

@Tobias Actually, you don't HAVE to move to lose weight, you just need a caloric deficit but moving definitely makes the weight loss go faster and improves other aspects of health. Congratulations on losing the weight. I'm also endeavoring to do the same.

@Hank_IV I am assisting a major study with neuroscientists and psychiatrists who are researching the link between trauma and obesity. I have acted as a research subject for this team in the past, but I'm presently helping with transcription and data collation. Yes, there are other causes, but the underlying issue is most often trauma. Trauma leads to numerous medical conditions that lead to obesity. The medication that treats trauma also contributes to obesity. It all comes back to trauma. Downvote me all you want, but I do know what I'm talking about. The medical literature coming out in the next five years will show it.

The biggest underlying cause is the inclusion of HFCS in everything. We've known precisely what caused obesity to skyrocket for 40 years. In 1960 40% of american adults were "overweight" while 13.4% of adults and 4% of children were classified as obese, morbid obesity wasn't even a tracked metric. Today 44% of american adults and 20-22% of children are obese, 75% of the population is overweight, 21% of adults are morbidly obese ,while the global obesity rate has fallen from 13.6% to 13.4% even as the global population has tripled. Jobs have become more sedentary, processed food has become the norm, with HFCS being included in the majority of it. The rate of type 2 diabetes has increased 95x in that time span from 200K cases in 1960 to over 38 million, with another 140 million being classified as "pre-diabetic" 40 years of obesity being treated like an epidemic, 40 years of researchers trying to link the underlying cause to anything and everything that removes personal responsibility.

The only fully peer reviewed and proven fact of HFCS that is available is; It blocks the hormones that signal our brain that our belly is full. That is a major piece supporting your statement.

@Insomnic No, you do not have the credentials to diagnose. You have the knowledge to make assumptions. Yes, trauma is a part of obesity, but so are other things. You stated that trauma is the ONLY reason, and it's not. That is the problem I have with your post.

@Kristal Your reading comprehension needs work. I said MOST OFTEN. Not only. Right now, we are working to get it down to an actual percentage, which is why I did not give one. Trauma is the primary cause of mental illnesses like depression. A step or two between does not erase trauma as the primary cause. Dissociation (a state of mental dysregulation frequently manifests in dysregulated eating, either restricted or binge. People don't want to believe this because it gives a biological cause for obesity rather than allowing them to shame and blame, like Hank wants to. No mentally healthy person eats themselves into the state where they spill so far into someone else's seat. That's not big-boned. That's morbidly obese.

So you're a transcriptionist or secretary. I used to build freeway bridges, like shop floor to abutment. And I'm a practical engineer. That doesn't mean I have a certified stamp for the blueprints or the right to consult for other bridge engineers.

i am not saying that trauma isn't part of it. Speaking from my own experience, trauma is not the factor at all. How do you account for people that are naturally a larger frame to begin with? I mean even if i had zero body fat I would still be considered "plus size" because of my frame (not attacking, legit asking based on what you posted)

From what I understand this was studied in Scotland with L.D. Lange as the grantwriter, in the 1960s. Along with neck trauma vs antisocial behavior and a few others. The research was extensively peer reviewed, all coming to the same conclusion; correlation =/= causation. Lange was one of the last noteworthy psychiatrist to reject the basis of the DSM. The DSM itself has zero peer review prior to publishing. A bunch of DSM based psychiatrists [the current entirety of the field] that rely on the DSM to be employed would not be an acceptable peer review in any other medical field.

We are 80 years beyond that work. We know far more about the brain than we did back then. And we are looking at this from a neuroscience base. I haven't heard anyone discuss the DSM. We are working far, far above that. They're actually looking at scans of people's brains, finding malformations and damage, comparing that to the medical histories to pinpoint what sort of trauma can cause what damage at what stage of development. An associate group is looking at what the brains do when the subjects are presented with food. Another group is simply calculating the number of morbidly obese patients against the number of patients with trauma history at different stages of development.

Langes last published work was 1973, so 51 years. We know more about the structures of the brain but have yet to observe the mechanism. I have Bipolar 1 with psychotic and violent features. I take the oldest known [there's your 80 years] psych med, lithium, and we still cannot observe the mechanism nor the proposed structures it affects. I've gone from being a skinny paranoid freak that couldn't hold a job to a men's room sign shaped guy that goes fishing with the boss; with a little help from lithium and a whole lot of personal accountability. Medical research is primarily funded through shell corporations [the grant writers know who's really funding] of big pharma. This is the current truth of all academic research, hence the almost complete lack of peer review over the last 28 years. @John L A mentally healthy person does not eat themselves into obesity. Binge-eating disorder (eating oneself into obesity) arises when the brain enters a stage of dissociation, which is a mode of shielding oneself from emotional trauma. Dissociation can also manifest in restricting food intake or substance abuse, among other things. People don't like the idea of trauma being the underlying cause because then you have to admit there's a neurobiological component rather than just blaming the individual as being weak-willed or gluttonous.

Why can't the neurological component be gluttony? Chronic depression is neurological. That's why the meds only work for the bored and disillusioned.

What do you mean by "bored and disillusioned"?

Eating way too much can be a sign of trauma. For transgenders it might feel like their body doesn't belong to them anyway. Getting overweight isn't adding to it. People with a history of sa might reject their body, being overweight can fuel that rejection towards their own body and from other people. Some people eat their depression away. For some people it's a fetish. They are overweight because they eat too much but there is a reason for over eating.

@Nemo, yes, there is always a reason for overeating. Most of those reasons can be traced back to trauma, including things like SA.

This goes back to configuring seats so they are comfortable for EVERYONE. I mean why not add 1-2 inches between seats? I know. because that would take out the whole middle section of seats on a 777 or 787... that means at least 50 tickets they couldn't sell. that's why.
