Woman Assumes Mom’s Age So Badly, She Thinks She Left A Toddler Home Alone
Interview With ExpertIt’s usually up to the parents to decide when their child is mature enough to be left home alone. However, there are always those people who question the parenting decisions of others, offer them unsolicited advice, or judge them without knowing the full picture.
Like this woman, who, after overhearing one parent while camping, jumped to conclusions and threatened to call CPS because she left her son home alone. What she didn’t know was that the child was an adult, leaving her feeling dumbfounded when she learned the whole truth.
Scroll down to find the full story and conversation with Sari Beth Goodman, M.A., founder, certified parent educator, and coach at The Parental Edge, and Dennis Poncher, founder, author, and director at Because I Love You Parent Support Groups, who kindly agreed to chat with us more about leaving kids home alone.

“Child 12 years or older is ready to stay home alone”
Some states (14 to be exact) in the US have laws in place dictating how old children must be to stay at home all by themselves. For example, in Illinois, kids have to be 14, while in Kansas, they have to be at least 6 years old. The remaining states don’t have strict legislation, only recommendations, leaving this decision up to the parents.
“When there is no law, the general consensus is that a child 12 years or older is ready to stay home alone and can supervise younger children,” says Sari Beth Goodman, M.A., founder, certified parent educator, and coach at The Parental Edge.
“As far as what age a child should be able to stay home alone, it really depends on the child and the length of time that the parent will be gone. In most cases, parents are willing to let their 12-year-old stay home alone, providing the child is not one that shows signs of depression or anger,” seconds Dennis Poncher, founder, author, and director at Because I Love You Parent Support Groups.
However, age isn’t always a good indicator of whether a child could be left home alone. Some mature more quickly, while others take longer to do so. Therefore, Goodman advises evaluating their trustworthiness, independence, and street smarts to gauge whether they can be left solo:
- Trustworthiness – Does the child generally tell the truth, follow family rules, have trustworthy friends, and set an example of trustworthy behavior for younger children?
- Independence – Can the child fix simple meals, keep busy doing things other than be on a device, know how to use a fire extinguisher, and know where to go during an earthquake?
- Street smarts – Does not open the door to strangers or acquaintances who unexpectedly come to the door, does not give out private information, and does not post about being home without adult supervision.

Before leaving a child home alone, parents should have some ground rules they have to adhere to
Before leaving any child (even the older ones) home alone, Poncher suggests having some ground rules that they have to adhere to. “One of those rules should state that no friends are allowed in the home unless one or both parents are home. Remind your child that there will be consequences if the rules are broken,” he says.
Meanwhile, Goodman recommends thinking about the following factors before leaving kids alone at home:
- Base the age a child is left alone on the length of time adults will be away and the distance and time it will take for the adults to return. The longer the time away and the farther the distance, the older the child should be.
- Staying at home alone is a skill and should be taught. Start with short separation and distance times, go over safety rules, and teach skills like using a fire extinguisher and how to stay safe during a fire, earthquake, or flood.
- Are there adult neighbors or relatives nearby that can be called upon to help out?
- Is the child healthy? Does the child have any physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges?
When parents finally decide to leave their child alone, it’s important that they provide them with a phone number they can reach in case of an emergency and check in with them regularly. “When parents first start leaving a child alone or supervising other children, make a plan as to how the check-in will go. Depending on the duration of being alone, they may decide to call or text every ½ hour or hour,” says Goodman.
“The frequency is set up ahead of time so the child does not feel that he/she is not being trusted. It’s just part of the plan. As time goes on, the planned check-ins can have longer intervals. There should always be a plan for a check-in. It is part of being responsible,” she concludes.

So, does this mean I have to hire a sitter for my son August? I mean he's 28 yo but maybe 🤔 I shouldn't be leaving him home alone?
My 80-year-old mother would probably tell you that yes, you need to hire a sitter for him! XD When my mom faffs off to her beloved casinos every other weekend with my older sister, she's always "worried" about "leaving me home alone". I am 43 years old XD I know how to use the stove, the microwave, and I can even dial emergency services if something happens! XD
Load More Replies..."Times sure have changed" An 11 year old should have never been doing that to begin with, wtf
it's one of those "back in my day" things where nobody wants to be back in their day
Load More Replies...I only see positives from that. First she made a compliment on how young you look and then she actually cared about a child being left alone. If there were more people like that the world would’ve been much better and safer
I’d rather they just bloody asked me to my face !! Like I would them !! I’m 60 I speak as I find n if in doubt I ask saves so much s**t !
Load More Replies...How hard is it to say "oh, really, how old is he?" before working yourself up?
May have been worried about confronting someone she didn't know? I think checking in with someone she did know was a good option.
Load More Replies...Anyone happen to know how old crystalwitch is? I don't think she's *ever* mentioned it.
Given her posts and the use of a single letter to stand in for a word, my guess is 14-16. 😕 (😉)
Load More Replies...Or just do what a normal person would if concerned, and casually ask how old the child is? Eavesdropping on half a conversation never turns out well. If anyone overheard some of my conversations with friends, I’m sure they’d call the police, even though we were obviously joking.
At 17 I was training to be a flight attendant,at 18 I was travelling all over the world, full fledged flight attendant.By 19, I've been to 74 countries. My narc parents often goes out for their s3x nights won't come home till the next night, often leaves me at home with my 3 siblings,7,4 and 1.I was 11 and this continued on till I finally left home at 17. By then I have 6siblings to look after.13,10,6,4,2, 3mths old and they were upset they couldn't go out and have s3x in hotels anymore because my other sibling "couldn't babysit like me" and I was "being irresponsible for leaving home and not looking after the kids".
So they had enough money to bang at hotels whenever they felt like it, but couldn’t afford to hire a babysitter? Your parents had weird priorities! (Or none that involved their kids?) Eeep; I’m sorry that happened, but🫸🏻🫷🏻for getting out when you did! Good work!
Load More Replies...I do, too, in other people's opinion. When I look at myself, I seriously don't get it.
Load More Replies...If I were OP and EVER ended up around this "new" woman again, during any event/context, I'd bring up the woman's assumption. "Oh, hey, xyz, are we going to go to the bar? I brought my drivers' license in case they card me, since I look so young!" or "OMG, I was trying to fill out my voting ballot at the voting center, and they told me to go home and come back once I was 18! Can you believe they thought I was so young? Hahaha!" - but for srs, I am appalled that the "new person" didn't ask OP HERSELF her age/her child's age but instead skulked around behind her back to another person and threatened a CPS call without even FINDING OUT the child's age.
This is a win/win! She got to shut down a bítch AND walks around looking 15 years younger than she is. She owned that day
My husband and I went on a trip to Venice a few years back. We met up with a lovely couple who had no children. At some point the topic of kids came up and I mentioned we had four. The woman then said OMG who’s got your kids? I laughed and said, They’ve got themselves! Our youngest was 28 at the time. 🤭
As a mom who has a 17yo, a 13yo, a 2yo, and would have a 19yo as well if things had worked out, I get a lot of, "You have a lot of siblings!" My son usually goes, yep, we sure do!
My son ist 21, his sister is 9. She adores him, always wanted him to carry her when she was younger and I'd get a lot of funny looks from people when I was out with the two of them (my son is very tall and looks older than he is).
Load More Replies...In this case I can imagine it was excessive enough,.maybe a couple of hundred cans each week. That would fill up a home pretty quickly and I am in a way glad the staff reacted as kids in hoarder homes is a real iasue. I sometimes buy bulks when I manage camps and I make a point of mentioning why I carry boxes pasta and a cart full of ravioli cans.
Load More Replies...My son and I were frequently taken as husband and wife when he was in high school. We found it hysterical.
Old adage say: "Always ensure brain is engaged before putting mouth in gear." *** I was a somewhat reckless little boy, always up to trying something I shouldn't have been doing. Rough consequences several times ensued. I definitely should not have been left home alone until well after gaining the age of eighteen. But I had two older sisters who tended to make sure I didn't burn the house down, and no, for sure the house never burned down. One time when the sisters weren't home, though, I did burn the cake I was trying to bake (I was age fourteen at the time; didn't know about pre-heating the electric oven, hadn't baked a cake before.) My one son and only child, now thirty-five, I could trust to be left on his own by the time he was twelve, but he knew how to call emergency numbers, always knew how to get in touch with me (I wasn't gone overnight), and knew if HE burned the house down it was going to be a cold night.
Eugh I’m an older mum lol I’m 60 my kids are 24-21 this year, in a few months time in fact lol so thankfully I never have to go thru this even tho I don’t look my age I can only pass for 45 max no younger This is funny as hell but also only in America do bloody Karen’s think they know better ffs keep your dam noses out !m so glad she spoke to someone else first instead of going full on Karen n calling cps first !! It’s one thing to be concerned !, it’s quite another to be so arrogant you cause s**t for people ! So glad we don’t have Karen’s in uk lol we don’t tolerate em ! If we see something isn’t appearing right we ask ! We double check n if we then are still bloody worried then we make the call we step in but we don’t go Karen 😂op keep looking younger lovely blessed be x
Not really a story here. The woman thought you looked young! Take the compliment and move on. As a side note I'm 70 and when I was 10 my mum and dad had full time jobs and in school holidays I had a key, would come and go as I pleased and normally prepared myself something to eat for lunch. On occasions I would cook the evening meal, learning to cook has served me well through the years. How hard is Spag Bol to make?
Paul C, you seem to be under the erroneous impression that looking 15 years younger than your actual age is a compliment. I have always looked younger than my years, and it is such a hassle. I've been talked down to, patronised, had my work and experience questioned. At the age of 30, I was holding my baby, and a random person asked "Does the baby's mother know you are carry the baby around?" "Yes, I do know that I am carrying my baby!" "Bah, teenage mothers!" "And just where is this teenage mother? I'm 30 years old." Being judged for actions based on others assumptions is not a compliment. It's downright annoying.
