Stepping up gives you one sense of accomplishment, but one-upping someone who’s clearly wrong is a whole other achievement. So this post is dedicated to those who didn’t stay silent when hearing false statements, fake news, or faulty arguments, but decided to cut the BS and do everyone a public service.

Thanks to the r/CleverComebacks subreddit, a community with 830k members that’s constantly growing, we have laid out some of the most razor-sharp comebacks. Scroll down, upvote the sharpest comebacks and be sure to check out our previous post on witty comebacks.

We also spoke to Abigail Paul, an actress, standup comedian and improviser who has given seminars on incorporating theatre techniques for purposes beyond the stage to schools, businesses and organizations all over Germany since 2001. Abigail told us how to improve our comeback skills, starting from learning to be better listeners. Tune in for the interview below!

Rich folks get substantially more government kickbacks than poor folks, but you don't see politicians arguing for drug testing when constituents apply for massive tax deductions.

I'm not American so I don't know for sure, but Congress-people are paid by taxpayers, aren't they (besides being paid by lobbyists, of course)? AND they are getting the "socialized" medicine most of their constituents don't get? So, they are more or less welfare recipients too...

I read an article about how most Millennials can't afford high end products for themselves, so many choose to lavish their pets instead. It's cheaper to buy your dog a cute sweater than yourself a cute sweater. Plus, many Millennials can't afford children and are waiting longer than previous generations to start families, so it's all a good reason to indulge the pets.

I work in a pet shop. This is so true. If you can afford to pay for a dog, the licenses, the VET BILLS, etc. you can afford to buy your dog a good brand of food. One where the first ingredient is a protein and NOT barley or 'meal' of some kind. Or just don't have a pet.

@ ben woskje : Agree, thats why I left it [I became a full-blown atheist on a crusade against any dogmatic religious institution] . But, imho, it applies to all dogmatic religious institutes. The veil has been lifted from the Catholic institute and I'm pretty sure the others will show their colours as well if their veil will be lifted. It's difficult though as there's a lot of oppression against those that want to shed some light on the comitted crimes.

“I teach the rules and principles of improvisation. We credit the improv guru Keith Johnstone with the term 'status' exercises and games, which helps us see things like status moves, and how to make a character in a scene have a higher or lower status. By working on this skill in a theatrical way, you also start to notice status 'wars' happening in real life. On the stage, it usually has the end effect of being comedic. In real life, it can go either way.”

I know several young, otherwise healthy people who had COVID. All but one of them had much worse symptoms than a typical flu case. Even what is considered a "mild" case (meaning the symptoms are not life-threatening) is awful. For example, a lot of people have anosmia that can last for months. And as the olfactory senses recover, it is common to have highly unpleasant parosmia. (If you or someone you know has COVID and has anosmia or parosmia while sick, it is important to make sure you or they eat enough. A person with COVID anosmia might find eating difficult and/or unpleasant, especially if they are also experiencing fever and fatigue, and proper nutrition is especially important when sick.)

I was f*****g rough with flu. couldn't get out of bed for about three weeks except to go to the toilet (and sometimes I was weighing up, is it worth it to go to the toilet? is it worse to get up and go there or to lie in my own piss. that's how rough I felt) it left me horribly fatigued for MONTHS after. and as a result, I DEFINITELY have respect for Covid and will take all sensible precautions I can to avoid it

Abigail argues that a great comeback feels great because it was earned. “It was spontaneous. The commenter was probably really listening. It was unique to that moment, set of people, situation,” she explained.

When asked how to make sure that your comeback doesn't sound mean, Abigail warns that “a comeback is not a clapback—which is generally sarcastic, but a clapback might be fun among friends.” Moreover, “Context of situation always matters. In working on status exercises in improv, we try to get people to see that the easiest way to raise another person's status is to lower their own. We see that in standup comedy too. Usually it works best if the comic is the butt of the joke, not the audience. (There are plenty of exceptions.)”

This doesn't even make sense for Christians. According to the Bible, God created the rainbow as his promise that he will never again destroy humanity because of our sins. It's a universal sign of his unconditioned love for us. What sign could be better suited for an equal rights movement?

According to Abigail, “You needn't be too self-effacing for a good comeback, but if it can lift other people up, it usually works well and gains the speaker a laugh and cements the bond that says, we are in this together.”

Comebacks can be a useful communication tool, but Abigail argues that excellent listening skills are the most important thing. “Paying attention, making accurate observations about the people in the room, and how they feel—these are the tools that will make a comeback really shine,” she said.

Had my 1 and only child when I was 30. I know for a fact I'm a much better mom than I would have been at an earlier age. I needed to grow up first. But that's just me and my opinion of myself. No kids is ok too.

And when it comes to getting better at listening, Abigail shared a fun game to exercise. “Have a chat with someone, but you have to start your response with the last letter of what the person has just said to you,” she said and added: “For example, if person 1 says 'what was the best part of your day'—the response must start with Y from the word day.”

“It might make for odd conversations at first, but it also forces you to really listen to the complete end of the person's sentence before you add in your own thoughts,” she concluded.

This is the problem with the discussion of how much of an impact we're making to the speed of natural climate change, you get the "it's all humans fault" crew yelling at the "it's not real" crew, and too little educated research and discussion from the middle ground. We're not helping, but the climate has been through hot and cold cycles since the birth of the planet

Yep. Instead of paying to help people prevent disease with cancer check ups and like and inexpensive generic drugs that can combat blood pressure for instance, let’s just wait for them to have strokes in their 50s and 60s before Medicare kicks in. Or cancer so they lose their house and life savings. Meanwhile, US taxpayers already cover children in CHIP programs, veterans, and the elderly with Medicare and Medicaid. So why are we letting health insurance companies profit astronomically off the healthiest age population that is the cheapest to insure? For less than what all US employees and employers pay now in healthcare insurance it could substantially help pay for all. It’s always follow the $$$. Who profits? Never us.

Insurance companies have invested a lot in their propoganda campaign to convince Americans that universal health care is a terrible and terrifying thing. Ask someone living in almost any other country on earth if they had to declare bankrupcy after a hospital stay. Universal health care isn't perfect, but it's better than the alternative.

In a pandemic, churches are NOT essential. Isn't God supposed to be everywhere? You don't need to go to a certain place or building to worship him or pray. You can do this from the safety of your own home. God gave you a brain, use it!

Think some forget that not every pregnancy is a viable one. Molar, partial molar, ectopic, severe deformity that would make it impossible for a success living being. Never mind the latter which is pro choice. Regardless of reason, it is definitely a MEDICAL procedure. Secondly, the reason is nobodies damn business!

Im on the fence when it comes to abortion. I feel both sides have valid points. What i dont understand is why a person who claims to be pro life feels the need to kill an abortion doctor. If they were really pro life they wouldnt be ending them!

Feminists fight for EQUALITY. A great way to test if a phrase supports equality is to substitute the opposite sex in the phrase and test it out. Her post is sexist. If you have questions as to how that could be, please try the method outlined.

Ben Shapiro is a failed fast talking door to door salesman who debates with young people who really don't stand a chance against a guy who twists words and invents "facts" and "science" on the spot. But there are idiots out there who actually think that he's a terrific debater. But honestly, I think that if you say in public that your wife never gets aroused in your presence, your wiring needs an overhaul. https://www.ccn.com/ben-shapiro-wife-dap-brag-self-own/

In his *slight* defence, the phrase is technically incorrect, it's not "renewable" at all, solar is solar at that moment, you can't renew the sun later on when it runs out. Hydro-electric is the biggest con, creating electricity at high demand (and price) and then using it up later on (when it's cheap) to pump the water back up

What he's saying is technically correct but irrelevant. Like "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and "all lives matter." He's either joking or making a weird strawman argument.

Sure you can. Also, no one said anything about undergrad. Where I live, undergrad psychology students frequently work at group homes, especially those with "troubled youth." They're not therapists, but they hold group sessions, interact with the clients, teach life skills and conflict resolution, etc. and build genuine bonds. The folks (often teens) in the group homes may not be engineers yet, but there's no reason to think that they couldn't be one day, and there's no reason to think that what they learned from their experiences in the home may not benefit their mental health later in life.

I was lucky as a Canadian, to buy my first home in my budget 6 years ago. Since then, it's nearly tripled in price which is insane. People tell me "that's great! your investment has gone up significantly!" umm, ok sure, but if I sell it, I still need to live somewhere.

Same but in the UK, my house has gone up in value massively since we bought it but we still can't afford to move. Not that we want to.

I was unhoused because of COVID and moved back in with my parents. Sucks so much. Rent has gone up like crazy because landlords are able to adjust their income rapidly, and so I can't afford to rent. I actually ended up getting qualified for a mortgage and spent months looking for a house I could afford having offer after offer turned down. I finally did get a place, and the seller accepted less money because I was the only buyer to agree to possession 60 days after close. I will have been living with my parents for 15 months when I am able to move. I'm only able to wait because i have family.

I want to see into the future to know that buying a home in September 2025 is a better choice than June 2022. Or I twiddle my thumbs, waiting for a good opportunity, only to find housing costs raised $100,000 in a year. Damn it, should have bought a house a year ago. But I should have known this! Because red told me I should do it that way.

People are buying real estate as an money deposit/investment. By that logic alone, price CAN'T go lower than that given moment it is bought. This pyramid scheme works on expectation that people will get more money later on. Sad thing, young families won't...

I'm sure that person could also live on $1.60 an hour, which was the minimum wage back in '73. No? They want that $15 an hour? Then other things are going to cost more, too.

Yes especially since while I am waiting, I have to have an income 3.5 times the monthly rent to rent a place. If you have a downpayment, your mortgage payment can be much lower than rent. Guess we should all line up at the homeless shelter

Well, I have to disagree on this. Boycott as a means of changing the system does work. It just depends on the cause and how many people would join the boycott. The thing is that the guy above is probably not going to muster so many people that their boycott affects Reddit.

1 - Ok, here is the abstract of the actual research paper (my thoughts between parenthesis): Food is fundamental to French identity (As it is for any nation but so far so good). So too is the denial of structural racism (that's a gross overstatement or generality) and racial identity (not sure you can deny racial identity, it seems to me people, especially racist are pretty good at identifying which race you belong too, and when in doubt they ask: What are you?).

It means "We don't want to give our employees any more than we have to" But right now I am bitter because my staff is getting away with coloring all damn day instead of doing her job, and it is one of the expectations of the job to not do this type of stuff, and after repeated times telling her to stop, yet sees coworkers with different managers doing the same, does not stop. I go to my boss-yay middle management-who says it's fine. Oh great, now I will stop working and color all damn day myself. She better not think she deserves more. She colors because she can get easy money getting away with it. Then again, if you dont want to pay better then why expect more..."They dont pay me enough for this job, so I'll doodle instead" Why am I there.... Ok, rant over.

That's actually a very good insight for a writer. It's so hard to delete what's been written, even when you understand it has to be deleted

It's actually a saying, "kill your darlings".

Amazingly enough, MH didn't delete a sentence, only mere words contributing to a sentence. By this virtue DP is still a better writer than MH.

The comment editing thing couldn't let me change it so here's what I wanted to say: Who wants garlic bread, anyway, off to invade Denmark.

Some people really get way too comfortable trying to write rules for the whole lgbtq+ community. Like if you're privileged enough to be worrying about this bs you're too privileged to be "banning" people who actually need the label. This is not an exclusive club, this is a support group.

Not to mention if you extent it (LGBTQIA+) the A stands for asexual, aromantic and agender.

Asexual may not be lgbt+ but it it's definately included in the 'Ain't nobody else's business' catagory.

And some asexual people have sex. Or garlic bread. Or cake.
