Stepping up gives you one sense of accomplishment, but one-upping someone who’s clearly wrong is a whole other achievement. So this post is dedicated to those who didn’t stay silent when hearing false statements, fake news, or faulty arguments, but decided to cut the BS and do everyone a public service.
Thanks to the r/CleverComebacks subreddit, a community with 830k members that’s constantly growing, we have laid out some of the most razor-sharp comebacks. Scroll down, upvote the sharpest comebacks and be sure to check out our previous post on witty comebacks.
We also spoke to Abigail Paul, an actress, standup comedian and improviser who has given seminars on incorporating theatre techniques for purposes beyond the stage to schools, businesses and organizations all over Germany since 2001. Abigail told us how to improve our comeback skills, starting from learning to be better listeners. Tune in for the interview below!

If You Don't Want To Get Tested, Don't Apply
Welfare benefits are not supposed to be earned, they are given for free so people can survive. Because, you know, people have the right to live.
Rich folks get substantially more government kickbacks than poor folks, but you don't see politicians arguing for drug testing when constituents apply for massive tax deductions.
I'm not American so I don't know for sure, but Congress-people are paid by taxpayers, aren't they (besides being paid by lobbyists, of course)? AND they are getting the "socialized" medicine most of their constituents don't get? So, they are more or less welfare recipients too...

I read an article about how most Millennials can't afford high end products for themselves, so many choose to lavish their pets instead. It's cheaper to buy your dog a cute sweater than yourself a cute sweater. Plus, many Millennials can't afford children and are waiting longer than previous generations to start families, so it's all a good reason to indulge the pets.
I work in a pet shop. This is so true. If you can afford to pay for a dog, the licenses, the VET BILLS, etc. you can afford to buy your dog a good brand of food. One where the first ingredient is a protein and NOT barley or 'meal' of some kind. Or just don't have a pet.
I'd love to get my good the good stuff, money isn't the issue. The issue is he's picky and refuses to eat anything except people food.

Abigail is now busy launching a new organization for comedy and shows in Frankfurt called “English Comedy Frankfurt,” so be sure to follow her work on Twitter.
“The secret to any comeback is connection,” she said and continued: “If you are really listening (and connecting) with another person, you are taking them in fully, aware of who they are, the context in which you are dealing with this person.”
Abigail believes that we tend do this assessment unconsciously. “We aren't even always aware that we are always sizing up other people. This is too often because we are so focused on ourselves.”

@ ben woskje : Agree, thats why I left it [I became a full-blown atheist on a crusade against any dogmatic religious institution] . But, imho, it applies to all dogmatic religious institutes. The veil has been lifted from the Catholic institute and I'm pretty sure the others will show their colours as well if their veil will be lifted. It's difficult though as there's a lot of oppression against those that want to shed some light on the comitted crimes.
Load More Replies...All objective critizism towards any dogmatic religious institute should be welcomed & embraced. It has done noone any good besides those that gain power & wealth by it.

“I teach the rules and principles of improvisation. We credit the improv guru Keith Johnstone with the term 'status' exercises and games, which helps us see things like status moves, and how to make a character in a scene have a higher or lower status. By working on this skill in a theatrical way, you also start to notice status 'wars' happening in real life. On the stage, it usually has the end effect of being comedic. In real life, it can go either way.”

Even what is considered a "mild" case (meaning the symptoms are not life-threatening) is awful. For example, a lot of people have anosmia that can last for months. And as the olfactory senses recover, it is common to have highly unpleasant parosmia. (If you or someone you know has COVID and has anosmia or parosmia while sick, it is important to make sure you or they eat enough. A person with COVID anosmia might find eating difficult and/or unpleasant, especially if they are also experiencing fever and fatigue, and proper nutrition is especially important when sick.)
You Michael, just buried a COVID non believer. Thank you so much. Glad to hear you are doing better.
I was f*****g rough with flu. couldn't get out of bed for about three weeks except to go to the toilet (and sometimes I was weighing up, is it worth it to go to the toilet? is it worse to get up and go there or to lie in my own piss. that's how rough I felt) it left me horribly fatigued for MONTHS after. and as a result, I DEFINITELY have respect for Covid and will take all sensible precautions I can to avoid it

Abigail argues that a great comeback feels great because it was earned. “It was spontaneous. The commenter was probably really listening. It was unique to that moment, set of people, situation,” she explained.
When asked how to make sure that your comeback doesn't sound mean, Abigail warns that “a comeback is not a clapback—which is generally sarcastic, but a clapback might be fun among friends.” Moreover, “Context of situation always matters. In working on status exercises in improv, we try to get people to see that the easiest way to raise another person's status is to lower their own. We see that in standup comedy too. Usually it works best if the comic is the butt of the joke, not the audience. (There are plenty of exceptions.)”
Stealing The Rainbow
This doesn't even make sense for Christians. According to the Bible, God created the rainbow as his promise that he will never again destroy humanity because of our sins. It's a universal sign of his unconditioned love for us. What sign could be better suited for an equal rights movement?
That assumes that you want an equal rights movement to prosper and, well, be equal. And from that assumption, it all starts to go south.
Load More Replies...As a queer Christian, I find the LGBTQ use of the rainbow totally appropriate. God is not angry. He has hung up His weapon. His love and mercy extend to all.
Okay if we’re being that technical..Jesus died on the cross. I don’t recall him saying before he died to use the cross as a symbol of his death. 🤔
I giggled, though that probably wasn't a joke XD. I agree with your point, though. Technically, the rainbow symbolizes hope and love. And what does the LGBTQ+ community teach? Hope and love. Seems like a perfectly good symbol to use.
Load More Replies...“Give it back”? Does he think we’re hiding ‘the rainbow’ in some secret lair protected by a moat of glitter? Tf?
The LGBTQ community uses the rainbow to symbolize love and inclusion. God used it as a promise that that one time he killed nearly every living thing on the planet was just a one time thing.
Was it like in the myth of Prometheus, but the guy was gay, there was only one god, and the fire was a rainbow ?

Comebacks can be a useful communication tool, but Abigail argues that excellent listening skills are the most important thing. “Paying attention, making accurate observations about the people in the room, and how they feel—these are the tools that will make a comeback really shine,” she said.
Other People’s Kids Is A Surprisingly Great Form Of Birth Control

Don't shame someone for not having kids. If they don't want them, don't force them to have them. That's how you get depressed and terrible parents.
I'd rather see women/men with no kids, than kids with parents who don't want them. Those are the children who suffer unnecessarily. Think about it... Society has no right to dictate to ANY person whether they should have kids or not.
So Easy To Say
My brother said he'd never put his kids on a leash-backpack before he had kids. Well after my 2-year-old niece booked it through the Tulsa zoo and wanted to pet the animals she was on a leash before noon.

“It might make for odd conversations at first, but it also forces you to really listen to the complete end of the person's sentence before you add in your own thoughts,” she concluded.
Climate Change Is Not Real Guys!!!
Actually yours is a very ignorant comment. Climate change in a naturally occurring phenomenon. That is scientific fact. The issue is that the overpopulation we have on this planet increases it's speed and worsens it's effects.

Load More Replies..."but I don't want my money paying for someone else's healthcare" Bro. It already is. Every single person that uses the ER like a walk in clinic and never pays the bill...where you think that money comes from?
Yep. Instead of paying to help people prevent disease with cancer check ups and like and inexpensive generic drugs that can combat blood pressure for instance, let’s just wait for them to have strokes in their 50s and 60s before Medicare kicks in. Or cancer so they lose their house and life savings. Meanwhile, US taxpayers already cover children in CHIP programs, veterans, and the elderly with Medicare and Medicaid. So why are we letting health insurance companies profit astronomically off the healthiest age population that is the cheapest to insure? For less than what all US employees and employers pay now in healthcare insurance it could substantially help pay for all. It’s always follow the $$$. Who profits? Never us.

Sure you can. Also, no one said anything about undergrad. Where I live, undergrad psychology students frequently work at group homes, especially those with "troubled youth." They're not therapists, but they hold group sessions, interact with the clients, teach life skills and conflict resolution, etc. and build genuine bonds. The folks (often teens) in the group homes may not be engineers yet, but there's no reason to think that they couldn't be one day, and there's no reason to think that what they learned from their experiences in the home may not benefit their mental health later in life.

Same but in the UK, my house has gone up in value massively since we bought it but we still can't afford to move. Not that we want to.
Load More Replies...I was unhoused because of COVID and moved back in with my parents. Sucks so much. Rent has gone up like crazy because landlords are able to adjust their income rapidly, and so I can't afford to rent. I actually ended up getting qualified for a mortgage and spent months looking for a house I could afford having offer after offer turned down. I finally did get a place, and the seller accepted less money because I was the only buyer to agree to possession 60 days after close. I will have been living with my parents for 15 months when I am able to move. I'm only able to wait because i have family.
I want to see into the future to know that buying a home in September 2025 is a better choice than June 2022. Or I twiddle my thumbs, waiting for a good opportunity, only to find housing costs raised $100,000 in a year. Damn it, should have bought a house a year ago. But I should have known this! Because red told me I should do it that way.
People are buying real estate as an money deposit/investment. By that logic alone, price CAN'T go lower than that given moment it is bought. This pyramid scheme works on expectation that people will get more money later on. Sad thing, young families won't...
Yes especially since while I am waiting, I have to have an income 3.5 times the monthly rent to rent a place. If you have a downpayment, your mortgage payment can be much lower than rent. Guess we should all line up at the homeless shelter
Not only in Canada... I could afford buying a house in the 80s. I cannot now.

1 - Ok, here is the abstract of the actual research paper (my thoughts between parenthesis): Food is fundamental to French identity (As it is for any nation but so far so good). So too is the denial of structural racism (that's a gross overstatement or generality) and racial identity (not sure you can deny racial identity, it seems to me people, especially racist are pretty good at identifying which race you belong too, and when in doubt they ask: What are you?).
Load More Replies...Yeah, what can a French person know about cheese? They only have about 1500+ varieties. /s
Load More Replies...Don't ya think saying an entire country's cuisine is white privilege is a bit of a stretch? this de-legitimizes actual inequality. French food is butter and cream. So dairy is socially bad now?
Now some are calling simple food racist, I did not know bread had a voice
French food is white privilege? Okay, I was in need of a refill on my personal philosophical permission to ignore everything said by the far left, (just as I ignore the far right). 'French food is white privilege!!!!' Check. Far left is on mute in my brain again.
This is so far left it's looped all the way back round to the right.
Load More Replies...But cheddar & Oreos are tasty. But not together. Actually I don't know that. I've never tried it. Maybe it's delicious.
No Lies Were Told
That's because Bills used their special attack, "greasy landlord".
Load More Replies...It means it will be significantly lower than what you expected to be paid.
The lowest salary we can get away with to help our CEO Compete against other CEOs for who has the biggest....uh, I mean the highest salary.
It means "let's waste time with an interview where we wonder whether you'd a accept a salary 20% lower than your current one".
It means "We don't want to give our employees any more than we have to" But right now I am bitter because my staff is getting away with coloring all damn day instead of doing her job, and it is one of the expectations of the job to not do this type of stuff, and after repeated times telling her to stop, yet sees coworkers with different managers doing the same, does not stop. I go to my boss-yay middle management-who says it's fine. Oh great, now I will stop working and color all damn day myself. She better not think she deserves more. She colors because she can get easy money getting away with it. Then again, if you dont want to pay better then why expect more..."They dont pay me enough for this job, so I'll doodle instead" Why am I there.... Ok, rant over.
Vis.: The Hunger Games, but it's an Amazon warehouse.
Load More Replies...According to HR one place I worked, it means the average salary for that position in your area. This, after telling me they want to hire the best. For that average salary.
Great Observation, People Who Make A Lot Of Money Don't See The Problem
Funny how some working class fool got into the business of defending billionaires.
I can't say for sure because I've never had even 5 figures in my account, but I'm pretty sure I'd refuse to accept that much money, or I'd spend it round my friends on a monthly basis. Even a million a year is more than enough to be comfortable and save, how can someone justify just loading up bank accounts with millions upon millions?
Asking a question on the internet is like talking to toddlers. "What time does the game start tonight?" "I like oranges."
For the predictable vilification of all very high net worth people that will obviously follow this: does it apply to Beyonce and JK Rowling? Do you hate Beyonce and JK for having hundreds of millions or billions and consider them evil, sinister people who must have done something unethical if they have that much money?
I might not hate them personally, but I really hate the system which allows them to became so loaded in a first place.
Load More Replies...Well, as soon as you make it into your first 7 digits and get asset rich - you will have a chance to start abusing the "system"...

You don’t deserve all the hate. I just don’t understand why you’re being hated on!

You must be marrying a very stupid man or divorce court is on the horizon!
Waterproof Your Valuables
Does this person think that US currency dissolves in water? It can go through the laundry.
just as aquestion and not as a bragging type thing (because seriously bragging about what money is made of is just stupid) but can US dollars be disinfected, cos with the plastic money, knowing it can easily be covered with antibac spray or handgel has been a great relief during the covid pandemic. xP
Load More Replies...They have a lower carbon footprint and can be recycled
Load More Replies...The thing is that modern Brits really do not care about the Boston Tea Party. I wasn't even ever taught it in school. It's just something Americans think we're still salty about and like to hold over us but like, no one cares about it at all
American money isn’t paper. It’s technically cloth. How do you think our money survives all that boob sweat when women utilize their bra as a wallet.
It is cloth - 25% linen, 75% cotton. Treasury used to use cast off denim from the jeans industry. Had to stop once companies started adding other materials to the mix to make jeans stretchy.

I mean, this is funny either way. Obviously showing off waterproof money isn't meant to be taken seriously
Not Really Sure If This Belongs Here But Still
Your writing is only as good as your ability to differentiate between a dependent clause and a sentence.
Indeed! What Morgan seems to have read from the tweet was that shorter = better, always and in all ways. So that's what they did, they shortened it. But if the sentence (or phrase) *does* belong, as this one did, then you're not helping by cutting it.

The comment editing thing couldn't let me change it so here's what I wanted to say: Who wants garlic bread, anyway, off to invade Denmark.
Load More Replies...Some people really get way too comfortable trying to write rules for the whole lgbtq+ community. Like if you're privileged enough to be worrying about this bs you're too privileged to be "banning" people who actually need the label. This is not an exclusive club, this is a support group.
Not to mention if you extent it (LGBTQIA+) the A stands for asexual, aromantic and agender.
Asexual may not be lgbt+ but it it's definately included in the 'Ain't nobody else's business' catagory.
Please don't confuse "witty" with "vicious" just because some people (Dorothy Parker, etc.) were both. In many cases, if they weren't so damned hyper-partisan and you happened to agree with their partisanship, you'd just write them off as bitter, vulgar, nasty shitheads. (The funniest thing about the Fish at Pets Mart post is that there is a Fish at Pets Mart account!) In some cases, the burnt are nasty so there's some fair play, but too often the burns amount to, "I hate this person because I disagree with them, so I'm going to act even more hateful!" That's a small mind, not a sharp one.
I like the ones between two people , but I could live without any more politics
Some of these aren't bad, but for the most part I've heard wittier comebacks on a grade school playground.
oh shut up your just jealous that you can't meet the intelligence of the comebacks
Load More Replies...There's a lot of unintelligent remarks & unintelligent comebacks on here! Sometimes it's difficult to tell one from another!
