Wife Discovers Husband’s “Game” With Coworkers, Can’t Even Look At Him Anymore

It’s nice to get along well with co-workers and maybe even get together after work sometimes. Though, for some people, it happens on a regular basis, and sometimes it gets pretty wild.

This redditor shared that her husband, a senior partner at a banking firm, spends time with his co-workers after work quite often, which has led to some pretty serious bad behavior, presented as fun drunken antics in the past. The woman opened up about one of such antics that has left her feeling hurt and violated, though her husband believed it was something they should be able to laugh at.

Many couples fight over the amount of quality time spent together

It’s not uncommon for people’s work life to become intertwined with their personal one. And it’s also not unheard of for that to have a negative impact on their relationships, especially those with their significant others. The long hours at the office, constant talks about their “work spouse”, or spending the little free time they have with their co-workers might become too difficult for people’s partners to be supportive of; or even tolerate, for that matter.

While “spending time with co-workers” didn’t make it to the list of the most common things couples fight about, the “amount of quality time spent together” made it to the top ten, according to a YouGov’s survey from 2022. Bearing that in mind, it’s not surprising that some people might feel bitter if their significant other decides to spend more time with the individuals they see at work every day rather than their own partner.

But, as the OP’s example shows, sometimes, it’s not about the amount of time spent, but rather about the activities that time was spent for. The aforementioned survey found that friendships or social activities outside of the relationship were a common reason for fighting, too, and it’s safe to assume that when social activities entail sneaking out with one’s spouse’s underwear in their hand, it doesn’t make the relationship any better.

It’s no secret that setting clear boundaries is important for the well-being of a romantic relationship. For instance, if your partner is getting increasingly close to their work spouse and it’s making you uncomfortable, you might want to express your concern or let them know how that makes you feel and set a boundary you wish your significant other respected.

According to the Office Pulse survey from 2017, a whopping 70% of business professionals at that time had—or have had—a work spouse, marking an increase from 65% in 2010 and 32% in 2006. The survey also found that quite a few people with such spouses have taken their relationship a tad too far, with 7% admitting that they have “definitely crossed the line”, and an additional 6% saying that they “may have crossed the line”.

Whether or not there’s reason to worry about work spouses, many people still do – 7% of male and 2% of female business professionals say that their actual spouse is jealous of their work spouse. Additionally, 11% of males and 5% of females feel the need to hide their work spouse from the actual one.

Talking about boundaries and people’s relationship inside and outside of work, BACP-registered counsellor and therapist, Lindsay George told The Independent that like most preferences and dynamics in relationships, the boundaries that work best for people also differ from couple to couple.

The expert pointed out that when a work spouse comes into the picture, it’s normal to feel a little jealous or threatened. However, if you feel this way, it might be best to try talking about it with your partner. “Explain how their relationship is affecting you and that you need help understanding it better,” George told The Independent. “Ask for reassurance. Find out why they like spending time together; do they give each other emotional support? Do they share common interests? And if so, what are these?”

Even though the OP’s problem with her husband’s co-workers wasn’t a work spouse or the threat such a person might present, explaining how their relationship—and the games they play—is affecting her might not be a bad idea. Some netizens in the comments even suggested that the woman should reevaluate her relationship altogether.

She should let the other wives know what went on, then have them all bring a pair of their husbands’ underwear to hang up in the office and play a “Whose is Whose” game of their own.

RIGHT? This is a violation when done without permission of the spouses. I'm not judging ANY WOMAN who gives her husband permission to do this; among consenting adults anything is fair game provided everyone is safe - but this? Is a HUGE NO-NO. I'd be planning a divorce as this is just the tip of a very murky iceberg...

This is disgusting and sounds like the worst work environment ever. Why is Valerie indulging these *choose word to insert here everything I am thinking is too derogatory to write* ??? The most concerning is that they all went along with it like little children who don't know any better and they can't be trusted at someone's house due to "breaking a swing set and going in bedrooms" in a house with CHILDREN in it. What is wrong with this woman to hold these parties? And is the man who gave her a black eye while pregnant included in the festivities?? What position does she hold? I hate her but I think I hate every man bowing to her every whim a lot more. This whole story is GROSS. What makes me weirdly sad too is how much OP defends Valerie in some of the comments where other people call Valerie out. "She didn't come up with the game and she isn't responsible for what they all chose to do. It feels kind of gross to blame the woman." Yet Valerie WAS there, she was the one who HOSTED (at a hotel!!) and planned the party, and she didn't put a stop to this little "game" when the men started playing it, so, in fact, she IS to blame, at least in part. If this is indicative of the kind of games that always get played at these parties, then she's 100% to blame. (As an aside, I have a few pairs of underwear that are a bit threadbare, some that I've repaired rips in, etc., and some that have bleached-ish crotch areas because, let's face it, vaginal discharge can discolor fabric. Some places normalize this kind of behaviour and fence sitters end up falling on the less ethical side. The OP is absolutely right to call out her husband on this nonsense. In the work context, "pick me girl" is pretty much the latest term for "queen bee" - there can only be one woman to rule and all others are viewed as competition for the unique position.

Make sure all the wives know, and notify HR (likely they know anyway). These are indeed private parties, but are specific to personnel and therefore not exempt from inappropriate behavior. HR at the least can advise them of the risk they put the company at with this behavior, potential publicity, etc. If that doesn't stop the parties, then OP's spouse needs to find another job.

What gets me is Valerie had to throw the party at a hotel because past behavior made her uncomfortable in her own house. That right there would have me really discussing with my husband if he wants to associate with these people. The senior partner sa people at the Xmas party. No amount of money is worth being around those people. Also I'd totally throw his underwear out and replace them with thongs. What would he wear to work on Monday...

The guys are such assh*les are they worth staying with? None of them showed any respect for their wives. How bad was their behavior before if one person would rather rent a hotel room than have to pay for repairs to their home? Get a good divorce attorney and take him to court. Are you sure they are businessmen, their behavior sound more like college frat boys. Emphasis on the boys .

It’s not that she wanted to go to the party, it’s that he stole her fricking PANTIES and showed them to his COWORKERS for a “game”. What immature behavior. Imagine your partner stole YOUR underwear and showed it to a bunch of strangers. Maybe you wouldn’t feel violated, but I bet all of my pocket money that someone you know would.

This is so f***g gross! How can adults behave like that. I‘d give my husband an ultimatum. He‘s never gonna do c*p like this or I‘ll divorce him.

It seems to be a privilege of the privileged to fail to grow up. Yet somehow these fools expect us to turn our lives, property and nation over to this level of immaturity and undergrown ethic for governance!

It's the nature of the irresponsible to not value responsibility.

This is exactly why some of us are wary of the "good ole boy clubs"...I would not stay with someone that lacks common sense and respect for me like that

look, if some dudes' wives are honestly ok with it, ok. it's weird to me, but i'm not gonna kink shame. but doing this without your wife's consent is a red flag. a big red flag. he either doesn't know her or doesn't care about her feelings.

There's more going on in this hotel room than just this game I'm sure. F*cking frat boy mentality at work is why I've been self employed for years.

The past behaviour that made Valerie uncomfortable: breaking a door and a swing set. It sounds as if sexism and sexual harassment are, at worst, a minor inconvenience to her.

"Valerie was exempt"? Or was she the one that modeled the panties for the guys?!

This is so vile, you hope it's fake. If this was my hubby, he'd be feeling the cold for quite some time.

Even far, far, far worse! This was in Raw Story today about CheeTurd kissing SMuskie toes. The video was AI; but maybe its maker had inside knowledge? https://www.rawstory.com/trump-elon-musk-2671207637/#comments_section_start

Not even kindergarten kids would do stuff like this. I need to know which bank this. If they do creepy and juvenile things like this, I don't trust them won't do creepy juvenile things with my money.

Really? This was a game?? Pathetic and worrying. These are all adults... with responsibilities. I mean, I don't actually think this sounds like 'fun' at any age if the knicker -owners didn't consent. Sounds like an awfully weird place to work. And, quite honestly, I would deffo tell everybody... CEO, COO, CFO, Board, HR, other partners, the other wives ( and why was Valerie's husband/partner excluded? Makes it sound even more dubious to me... )... EVERYONE.

    No, she's a "pick me". It's a slang expression.

I think the whole thing is weird but I don't think not inviting the wives is necessarily uncommon if it's a party for co-workers.
